Hollow

Action/Platformer
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No
Netbook Friendly

Theme: Mystery

Trapped in a cave! Gotta get out of there fast. There are flying jellyfish monsters, falling rocks, spikes, and other lovely bits of danger, but if you're fast enough, you can escape without harm. Connor Ullmann's Hollow is a platform game that's high on the challenge with a healthy injection of creative design on almost every level. You'll meet an untimely end dozens of times in this game, but you'll keep plugging away at it all the same. Practice leads to perfection!

Initially created as a Ludum Dare entry, and then fleshed out a bit more for a commercial release, Hollow keeps everything very simple, which is part of the game's strong appeal. Use the [arrow] keys to move, [X] to jump and [C] to do an insane forward head dive. Those are your only moves, but you'll learn to use them creatively to navigate the cave's terrain. Your dive can carry you across small gaps and give you an extra boost in height. It can also defeat enemies, though not all of these creepy cave alien things are vulnerable to your pearly white noggin bumps.

You can't play Hollow by running around hitting keys at random. The levels are carefully designed to make you take your time, measure your movements, and act only when it's time. That being said, don't think you'll be doing a lot of standing around admiring the scenery. Hollow also encourages you to keep the gas pedal down, charging through areas because taking a break is just the wrong thing to do (and rocks will probably fall on your head). In the end, you'll play each level a dozen or so times, dying at different points and slowly learning how to make it to the exit in one piece.

Analysis: Hollow is the kind of game you'll play until you complete no matter how many times you groan in exasperation over another pointless demise. The short levels keep you motivated to work through each one regardless of how frequently you restart. After all, the exit is just up ahead, so why give up now? The creativity of the enemies is another motivating factor. The world of Hollow feels like an alien planet, and dealing with the squishy baddies is both rewarding and fun.

Achievements are a semi-invisible part of Hollow, and nabbing all ten of them is something you'll have to work towards. Most can be earned with one good play-through, but a few you'll have to go back to get after you've obtained a certain level of mastery. Press [A] to bring up a list of the achievements to see what you've got left to do.

Although Hollow is mostly an action-oriented game, there are a few secrets to be found. The biggest is a hidden exit that shortens the game, allowing you to finish early. Where is it? How do you reach it? Is there a leprechaun there? You'll have to find out!

A short, challenging game with great level design and an art style that's sure to please, Hollow is exactly the sort of game you want to occupy a lazy afternoon. - JayIsGame

Super Big Gun Adventure

Shooter/Platformer
Single Player - Yes

Theme: Fantasy

Super Big Gun Adventure is a true gentleman's browser-based murder simulator. It also happens to be a game that pits gamers against gentlemen who envy and loathe their (the players' of course) big guns, most probably due to them (the players' guns; please do pay attention) also doubling as jetpacks.

And, uhm, play it, will you? It's fun and unique and demanding and definitely worth a chance. Some might even describe it as a physics-based platformer. - Indiegames.com

Zombies at the Gates

Strategy/Tower Defense
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No
Netbook Friendly

Theme: Horror

The monarch in Zombie at the Gates has a rather novel solution for an undead infestation: the construction of a hot-air balloon of a castle. Unfortunately for him, castles cannot be built for a day. Therefore, it is your mission as the player to help the king defend his castle from a legion of adorable, blank-eyed zombies. To do so, you're going to have make use of a roster of upgrades, your ability to tap on buttons really fast and a small amount of luck. Short and sweet, Zombie at the Gates doesn't really offer any particular innovation but that does not stop it from being a relatively engrossing way of wiling away some time this weekend. - IndieGames.com

Vertical Impulse

Created for Glorious Trainwrecks' Five Years of Glorious Games, Leon Arnott's Vertical Impulse is a Pong-like dungeon crawler or as one commenter put it, "Metroid-pongia." Players bounce a ball back and forth, using it to smash like-colored barriers while avoiding anything purple. Players can use up and down arrows to change speed, too.

My first victory was at 298 bounces. I am slightly curious about what happens when you hit the last of the two blue barriers that doesn't lead to the exit... - IndieGames.com

The title should really say it all for this one.

Megazell's Comment - The game is not bad but it's not great either. This game seems to be very one sided as DBZ characters (not all) are seriously over powered. Add to this that during many of their movies they stop the gameplay and get some screen time while your character stands there doing nothing. Very much like the cartoon. If I had more time I would add more screenshots and videos.

Created during Full Indie Game Jam, Johnston's and Berry's Chunkadelic is a nine-game collection, "psychedelic love letter to retro."

Should I spoil the surprise or entice you with game nods? Without sharing all nine games, they have managed to squeeze in some Mega Man, Asteroids, Snake, platforming, FPS duck hunting, and more into the hyper Chunkadelic. Each one has its own life system: some have one-hit deaths, and others are more forgiving. - IndieGames.com

The Stanley Parable

Theme: Science Fiction

The Stanley Parable is an experimental narrative-driven first person game. It is an exploration of choice, freedom, storytelling and reality, all examined through the lens of what it means to play a video game.

You will make a choice that does not matter

You will follow a story that has no end

You will play a game you cannot win

...it's actually best if you don't know anything about it before you play it :D

Megazell's Comment - TSP does not actually require Half Life 2 on a Windows PC, only the Source SDK which should download automatically when you start the game. On a Mac PC, HL2 is required.

Potion is an arcade/puzzler in the spirit of Bomberman and Push Push Penguin. You play a creature that has the ability to open hole on the ground. Enemies will spawn and search for you on the map. Once they fall in the hole they will be trapped but you must cover the hole so that they do not free themselves.

The game has a cute soundtrack which is to be expected from the art style.

The game is from Japan. The controls are in English. When the game books up you will see two selections the first is for full screen and the 2nd is for windowed.

Table For One

Simulation/Physics
Single Player - Yes

Theme: Other

Game jams and competition serve many purposes, but what I really enjoy the most about them are those ridiculously weird games that brilliantly twist the given theme and achieve utter oddness.

Take Table For One for example. It was created for the 7dfps jam and, though it most definitely is a first person offering, it's the first one to ever be silly enough to place the camera inside a man's mouth and most probably the very first one to actually task the player with awkwardly and telekinetically eating a stake. Apparently some potatoes and a few peas, too. - Indiegames.com

Thread Update.

Hey there freeware/f2p fans...Argh. That's sounds too corny. Anyway, here is the deal. I think a lot of freeware developers are getting more savvy on how to promote their work with their own sites, blogs, tumblr and just overall tagging their products for search engines to catch. On top of that the other resources listed throughout the thread and on the main page are constantly improving their sites to get the latest freeware and f2p games to the their audiences as fast as possible. Now major studios seem to be embracing f2p and freeware PC gaming as a whole. What does this mean?

Well I'm getting bombarded by the influx of awesome. Which is a great thing! But it means that as I post it will get slower and slower for me to post in my traditional format also more place holders will be used.

I just updated the main page and took out the centering for the games listed. All together we have 1,914 games LISTED with their own post respectively. We then have another 104 games LISTED waiting to be posted from those placeholder post. Which brings the total amount of games in this thread to 2,018!

:bouncy::hot::bouncy:

Going forward I'll be posting as best that I can and as always you can make suggestion via PM or post as to what games you want to see, which games you want me to take a look at and how awesome I am.

Theme: Science Fiction

Truth be said, I hadn't played anything reminiscent of Space Invaders and/or Galaxian for quite some time and Scylla Starfighter was a welcome change of pace. It is a simple yet taxing shmup that only lets you move right or left and shoot, while traveling on a pre-set path through 3D cel-shaded environments and being exposed to a most enjoyable story.

Now, I wouldn't expect a storytelling masterpiece if I were you, but Scylla Starfighter's plot is a playful b-movieish affair that is successfully delivered via short in-game video communications and has the protagonist battling some sort of space-faring religious zealots. It is, in a nutshell, a perfect fit for a game of this sort and most probably much more than what we've come to expect from most space shooters.

Oh, and the gameplay does try to keep itself fresh by having you fly through cities, asteroid fields and all sorts of mechanics-changing environments, by battling bosses and even by providing with a retro-tastique Space Invaders mini level. - IndieGames.com

Pierrec, of Ok, This is Awkward! and Le Corbeau Et La Renarde fame, returns with the developer's biggest Adventure Game Studios project yet: Split Fighters.

Players control Severine from Never Alone Hotline on a quest to resolve life after a serious break-up. Severine can point and click her way through several fights or attempt to smooth things over with correctly chosen phrases.

The losing sprites are fatality-fantastic, but seeing them comes at a cost. I apparently got the worst of the three endings, fighting my way through the whole break-up. I managed to talk my character's friend-with-benefits down from fighting, though. Go me! - IndieGames.com

Damn shame about DeathAndTheFly..looked pretty badass. :(

Just wanted to say thanks for this awesome thread. I am getting more and more into PC gaming (after being console exclusively for a long time) and I appreciate a lot of indie type games. This thread not only brings attention to some titles but helps me not waste my time on stuff that is broken or helps influence me on ones that look cool with a great description/pics/vids.

Unbelievable job man, and thanks again!

I started making these early last year, with Exuberant Struggle for the TIGSource Versus Competition. It felt very rich with possibilities, so across the year I made several more.
At some point someone suggested that I should try putting them on iPad. So I bought one, ported Glitch Tank over, and found it worked amazingly well. Better than the original in fact, as though it was meant for a touchscreen all along. (If you have the privilege of owning an ios device, I highly recommend getting Glitch Tank for it - even if you find this PC version too confusing for you, you'll likely get on with the touch version a lot better.)

I got a bit discouraged after that though, because the other games did not port over anywhere near as naturally and the sales figures for Glitch Tank were not very promising. So I've sat on these for a while, occasionally tweaking them a little, occasionally struggling with the ios versions. But they need to be released, to be played, so here they are!

They're local-multiplayer only: there's no AI, no networking, you just play against a friend sharing the same keyboard.

Megazell's Comment - I highly suggest that you use two game pads with Joy2Key.

Sake Express Pro Wrestling

Shooter/Arena
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No
Netbook Friendly

Theme: Madness

Sake Express Pro Wrestling is all about punching giant animals in the face and laying down some serious Japanese pop culture moves. As the first game from Zak Ayles aka mooosh, Sake Express Pro Wrestling is a rather entertaining arena shooter/puncher hybrid.

The idea is to hold either the left or right mouse button, and spin your character to launch a punch in the necessary direction. Once you've collected a couple of power-ups, you can then combine their powers by holding both mouse buttons, unleashing a variety of different silly abilities. It's pretty tricky to get into, but once you've got the swinging motion down, there's plenty of fun to be had with Sake Express. - IndieGames.com

Lu Pei's Dream

Action/Platformer
Single Player - Yes

Theme: Madness

I like how Lu Pei’s Dream, from its opening scene of a girl next to a park bench in the sunshine, steadily descends into madness as the game progresses. When you prick your finger on some sort of spiky fruit, and accidentally start bleeding all over the place, things take a turn toward the surreal as the sky turns red, a washing machine explodes, and fish get caught in a weird suspended animation.

It gets much stranger from there, each new section of what is generally a lightweight puzzle-platformer adding something even less expected into the mix. But it always makes sure not to sacrifice its status as an invigorating game just to make sure it’s weird and wacky.

You should know before starting that left and right move you around, down is your use key, and space is a special key, because the game doesn’t bother telling you. It also only contains text in Chinese – but there’s not a lot of it, so you should be able to muddle your way through regardless of whether you’re familiar with the language. - PCGamer.com

Mouse Maze: Speed Run

Theme: Other

First-time developer Menashe presents a solid take on an underexplored genre with Mouse Maze: Speed Run, a free Flash maze game that has a surprising amount of variety in its level layouts.

The gameplay is simple -- players use the mouse pointer to navigate mazes and collect cheese icons without touching each level's surrounding walls. The emphasis on speed adds an extra layer of challenge.

While many of the game's challenges are straightforward, some stages are based on drawings, and provide a fun respite from the narrow corridors that make up the bulk of the game's level design. Give it a try! - IndieGames.com

I Remember The Rain

Adventure/Interactive Fiction
Single Player - Yes

Theme: Drama

I Remember The Rain is a very short game, that, frankly, isn't much of a game. It's more of an interactive story really, but, then again, the interaction bit is limited at best. So, uhm, why am I suggesting you have a look then? Well, it is an excellently told, stunningly illustrated and touchingly narrated story and I do believe most people will savour the experience it provides. - IndieGames.com
