KokohGear: Meal

Action/Platformer
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No

Theme: Fantasy

First-time developer Samer Khatib has launched his debut project KokoGear: Meal, a Unity-powered title that's playable for free at Kongregate.

KokohGear: Meal is a simple 3D action game in which players search for food in preparation for the winter months. It could be considered a platformer, I suppose, even though there's no jumping -- you're limited to WASD movement and a single action button.

The graphics have a Net Yaroze quality to them that may not be for everyone, but which I personally enjoyed. And though it starts a little slow, later levels introduce vehicles, and the challenges become more complex, as you can see in the trailer above.

Thread Update.

Working on this blog. Nothing serious at the moment. Still learning but don't have much time to mess with it.

Going to be cherry picking from this list and still updating this list if I can. I would like to add a side bar that will sort the games by genre and such much like the first post does here.

Also I changed the format of how the game are showcased.

If anyone has some blogger tips and tricks shoot me a PM or Post here.

Developed at NYC Game Centre, the browser-based Icarus is an exploration game based around flight, gliding, and a little gem finding. Controls involve left and right to move, space to flap wings, and holding space to glide. Hopefully after several flaps, you see how the beauty of Icarus unfolds.

Brief, bizarre and rather beautiful, Kendja's Tiny Dream was originally birthed for a Ludum Dare challenge. Adventure: All In The Game

Adventure
Single Player - Yes

Theme: Science Fiction
Theme: Mystery

There are characters like me in every game genre -- characters that were going to appear in a game, but had it unexpectedly cancelled.

Some of them hang around their own game, hoping that another company will complete it someday. Others spend their time hanging out in other games, which they can visit with ease. Then there are the ones like me who decide to dedicate their time to keeping this particular little genre running smoothly.

My name is Thalia James. I'm an agent of the 2D Third-Person Adventure branch of the Computer Game Maintenance Squad.

There are many agents in this part of the CGMS, and some of their assignments have turned into adventures of a scale almost as large as an actual adventure game.

And this is just one such adventure...

-----

Thalia James is back on duty in Adventure: All in the Game, the sequel to Adventure: The Inside Job. When the CGMS finds itself in desperate need of new agents, Thalia is given the task of training a younger character for the job. Unfortunately, this character is from a genre that hasn't been on the friendliest of terms with Adventure in the past, and putting up with him may prove to be even more challenging than the tasks she has to walk him through.

However, as is typical of Adventure, a much more serious problem is lurking close at hand, and once Thalia becomes aware of it, she will need to keep all her wits about her if she is to conquer it.

Be prepared for more visits to rarely-seen locales, conversations with characters both familiar and foreign, obvious and obscure puzzles, and a good number of things of a BONK nature.

Side Post Update.

Many USBs are going on sale for dirt all around NYC. I sure it's the same everywhere else in the US. Not sure about other countries but I made a few more of these for some of the kids that came of age in my extended family. Still a great gift idea, IMO.
This is a side post.

For those of you looking for a great gift to give family and friends that are gamers...consider as a gift or bonus gift making a DVD/CD or filling a USB full of these games to them :)

In July, I bought some (20) COBY MP3 1 Gb players for 19.99 with a 19.99 rebate.

jgms1u.jpg

It's really a USB stick with a crude MP3 player on it. Filled these bad boys up and shipped them out to friends with a note of what's inside and stuff :) Each one is tailored for the person that is getting them.

The ladies thought I should post that so...bah there you go.

Enjoy the games and holiday.
Theme: Fantasy

"Before we were Dead" began as a side-project to one of our dream projects called "Limb of Eternity" but soon grew into a complete game in its own right.
It's a relatively simple roleplaying-game with elements of aquatic platforming but its real strenghts lie in its richly developed world and atmosphere.

Take your time and explore, don't skip the text and just float with the waves.
Much of the lore in this game will have impact on our later works.

As a young Fishling the time has come for you
to travel to Spipreef and begin your journey to adulthood.
The Sea, however, is a dark and mysterious place and more terrors
than Badfish lurk in the deep waters around Spipreef.

Super Ecksdee Panic

Action/Platformer
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No
Netbook Friendly
Gamepad Support - Yes

Theme: Fantasy

Killix and friends are having a normal day, when suddenly a strange curse hits them, making them spontaneously transform into chibis unless they eat magical eggs. As Killix, you must knock some sense into your companions and get them to help you find the source of the problem.

Like many 8-bit games, Super Ecksdee Panic boasts the following features:

- Simplistic 8-bit styled graphics, sound, and music
- 6 levels, each with their own unique enemies and gimmicks
- Password system
- Enemies, bosses, and locations that don't make much sense
- WEPON

Each level in the game has a golden puzzle piece hidden somewhere. Collect all 6 puzzle pieces to access the final level and ending!

Default Controls

Walk: Left or right arrow keys
Jump: Z (hold down to jump higher)
Wepon: X
Aim wepon: Up or down arrow keys (only works with certain types of wepon)
Enter doors/flip switches: Up arrow
Pause game: Enter
Change screen size: 1 key
Quit game: Esc

The controls can be adjusted by selecting OPTION from the title page.

How To Play

Killix begins each level in Chibi form. As a chibi, you can only run and jump, and you cannot enter closed doors. You must find the magical blue egg in the level that will transform you into (mostly) human Killix.

In addition, you must collect 100 droplets scattered around the level and deposit them in the beaker next to the Big Red Boss Door. Make sure that you deposit your droplets as often as possible! If you die, you lose all of the droplets you're carrying, but you get to keep half of the droplets that were deposited in the beaker.

Once the beaker is completely full, the Big Red Boss Door will open, allowing you to duel one of Killix's paranoid buddies and knock some sense into them. Once they are defeated, you will progress to the next level.

Items

Droplet: Collect 100 of these to access the level's boss. Destroying a level's miniboss will make 25 droplets appear, and some normal enemies create them too after being defeated.

Wepon: These take the form of flashing squares. Certain types of wepon allow you to defeat enemies more easily or access new areas of the level. You can only carry one wepon at a time, so you'll drop your previous wepon if you collect a new one.

Brain Bleach: Restores half of your sanity.

Extra Man: Gives you another chance in case you die. If you lose all of your mans, you have to restart the level from the beginning in Chibi form.

Puzzle Piece: There's one of these in each stage. If you collect all 6 of them, the final level will become fully playable and you'll be able to fight the last boss of the game.

Caravan Star II

Shooter/Vertical
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No
Netbook Friendly
Gamepad Support - Yes

Theme: Science Fiction

Caravan Star II CS is a free shoot’em up with a hint of classics such as Uridium and Xenon, but with a particular twist – the game is over in just 2 minutes. It may sound like the game with the worst longevity ever, but that’s something inherent to the game itself.

The idea is to use the valuable 2 minutes to achieve the highest score possible, and then do it again and again to improve that little bit and vanquish the previous performance. This is non-stop arcade action with bullets everywhere, the player choosing from 6 different ships, each one with specific abilities such as speed and firepower. This obviously will make a difference in the final score, depending on which ship the player feels most comfortable. The enemy attack waves can also be different each time we start, making things much more unpredictable and challenging.

Gameplay is smooth and fast-paced, with the destructible background offering bonuses that improve our ship’s abilities. Visuals are functional but somewhat generic, akin to the shooters seen in the Commodore 64. - FreePCGamer.com

No Longer Subject to Judicial Review

Adventure
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No
Netbook Friendly

Theme: Other

Games about current events are rarely good, because they’re about as subtle as a political attack ad. A platformer with a politican’s face pasted on the main character is the equivalent of a 1940’s propaganda cartoon, with half the subtlety.

Some games, like Kettle, are starting to get it right, however. Judicial Review manages to walk that tightrope between subtlety and relevance well. The game is set in a world where the British Prime Minister has instituted reforms to the judicial system to ensure that those who are “clearly guilty” don’t get off scot-free. This comes in the form of trial-by-media. You are given a series of news articles about a case and asked to render a guilty verdict, which will be legally binding. You render this verdict by scanning through articles and collecting bits of text as evidence, then making your choice between the suspects that appear in the text.

The writing of the articles feels very authentic, with some authors straining to provide some modicum of objectivity while others clearly have an ax to grind. Anyone who appears in the articles can be a suspect, and in order to get the whole story you have to convict some of the minor players as a “what-if” scenario to see their ending.

The endings are what really set it apart, the articles themselves feel very mundane, but the endings are where the author’s intent really shines. It’s clear there’s consequences for how you choose to read the news articles.

Talking Points: What does this say about the modern media? The judicial process? Is this a good critique of the news media? Is this a game that anybody who reads the news would understand? - Gamers With Jobs

Oh god. I'm not a huge fan of games that use jump-out-of-your-seat tactics and pitch-black darkness as a way of creating horror and tension - if I'm going to do horror, it has to be genuinely scary. Andrew Shouldice's Hide, created for the Super Friendship Club's Justice Pageant, features plenty of lights in the darkness - and you spend the whole time trying to run away from them.

Finding yourself in a field at night time, with sirens blaring away in the distance, you're left to explore the surrounding area and work out a means of escape. I won't go into any more detail than that, as I really don't want to spoil anything. It's gorgeously, terrifyingly atmospheric, and demands 10 minutes of your time. - IndieGames.com

Neocolonialism: The Video Game by Subaltern Games is a multiplayer-only turn based strategy affair mainly inspired by the works of David Harvey and Fernando Cardoso and, thus, a deeply political game that has players assume the roles of investors in an attempt to conquer the world over LAN. Internet play may not have been implemented yet (the game is still in alpha), but everything from installing puppet governments, to buying off countries and imposing IMF policies is there to make you feel like the powerful, greedy person you aspire to be, while simultaneously providing certain insights as to how economic geography works. - IndieGames.com

Freeware Update

Thanks to PCGamer, I learned that Shacknews did a piece on Marathon getting a face lift.

Before Bungie blew up with the Halo franchise, it worked on a sci-fi first person trilogy called Marathon. As a surprise gift for the holiday season, all three games are being released for free alongside an open-source version of the Marathon 2 engine, Aleph One.

Included in the release is Marathon 2, Marathony Infinity, and a "fan remake" of the original Marathon. A few simple clicks will let you download a version for PC, Mac, and even Linux, too.

Aleph One updates Bungie's original games with OpenGL shader support, internet co-op and multiplayer, "modern mouse-look" and support for game pads.

Each of the games have been updated with high-resolution graphics. However, the original game gets the most significant overhaul. Marathon's HUD receives a modern HUD facelift and "extensive changes to the scenario to create the most authentic Marathon experience since 1994."

More info here - http://www.shacknews.com/article/71359/marathon-trilogy-released-for-free-open-source

Good job on the list man, but just wondering are there any good stealth games? I'm playing Art of Theft and really liking it.

Thanks!

Besides the ones already listed under Action - Stealth? There are a few games that have stealth modes from time to time but a major focus.

I would try -

Merry Gear Solid: Secret Santa
Merry Gear Solid 2: Ghost Of Christmas Past
Project Future
