Been lurking forever and finally have something to contribute. For those of you that were burned by Best Buy's drop in trade-in values and have a Microcenter near you, here's a possible alternative. Microcenter has some trade in values advertised on their website and in the new sales paper. Notice the trade in value for Crysis 2. I've never personally traded there so if anyone has please post your experiences.

http://www.microcenter.com/storefronts/gaming/used.html

YMMV, as some stores do not have trade-in capabilities.
Stores without trade-ins: 'Twin Cities/St. Louis Park, MN', 'Beltway/Rockville, MD' [add more when discovered]

Current trade in values as of 11/29/11 from the CAG community (Thanks fortunado for compiling and editing list)

(11/29/11) - Added some new values today. I overheard someone say that all the games MC buys get shipped off to their buyer and then redistributed among the stores that lack certain titles. At my store they will take one copy per game, per console, per day, per person. So it may be possible to just spread trades of duplicate games out over the course of a few weeks.

(4/1/12) - RAGE Anarchy Edition not being accepted at some stores due to UPC being different from what they allow (even though it is the "better" version). YMMV on this if the employee will override.

To keep the wiki current, try to enter the date you obtained the value.

They work for a corporation , corporation has one legal duty to maximize profits for share holders... You have to be somewhat educated on what you're buying...

Some scams to show this?

Trade in values from last night.

Wii Metroid other M 15.00
PS3 Start the party 12.00
ps3 TV superstars 5.00
PS3 Rock Band 3 5.00
X360 Fable 3 10.00
x360 Fallout New Vegas 10.00
PS3 Sports Champion 6.00
ps3 Tron 12.00
Ps3 Enslaved: Odyssey 6:00
Ps3 Duke Nukem Forever 15:00

The people pricing these at MC have no idea what they're doing... many of those prices are higher than these widespread clearances going on at other retailers.

Didn't do any trades but was shopping at the Tustin location last night (12/19) and they now have a sign posted in the gaming dept saying that there's a limit of "one title per customer" on trades and they no longer accept Brink. Just an FYI...

Couldn't tell you for sure because the sign didn't specify but I took it to mean no more multiples (i.e. one copy per title per platform per person lifetime).

I think that makes more sense than one game per person per trade in...

thats what im hoping for..i have a stack of games i want to trade in ;)

The Tustin signage is accurate, although I'm not sure it's a corporate rule or a store by store implementation. My TV broke last night so I'll be burning some credit tonight.

my friend said at tustin its one copy per title per person, regardless of console, ie ONE call of duty MW3, period. You cant trade in one for PS3, X360, etc

At least your store didn't misinterpret the corporate memo. My local store said they will only accept 1 title per console per day period. I tried to trade in 6 completely different games and they only took 2 total. 1 for 360 and 1 for PS3.

Traded some games in

Wii Metroid other M - $15
360 Fable 3 - $10
360 Bulletstorm - $17

Also had a LA Noire with me, but they did not accept it cause the "UPC did not match" what they had in their system. I got the game from BB and it came with the Sharpshooter detective suit.

Did anyone have issues with LA Noire? Got denied at the Westmont, IL store. The Chicago (Central), IL apparently does not take in trades

Apparently the manager at the westbury store feels that they will no longer be taking tradeins. Too bad cuz i had a few games from bbv but you can't win them all. Also went to the yonkers location and they said the server went down. These guys are as bad as bestbuy with this stuff.

If they are doing trade-ins let me know. I have to say that it is unfathomable that their phone system is completely fudged. I was waiting for a rep for half an hour before someone picked up. How can you run a tech specialty store when the servers keep going down and the phones don't work? Also went there in person and their is a sign up at the gaming section saying no more trades

I trade games weekly at the Yonkers store and never had problems regarding servers going down. The best bet is to go later in the day when Nate comes in as he is in charge of the gaming department and he knows his stuff.

Also, try to avoid having the front end manager do your trade ins. He will deny any game trade ins with even a minuscule scratch on 'em.

FYI guys I was in the Cambridge, MA store trading in and was told that they can only take 1 game from each console. Dumped a mindjack, enslaved, and metroid.

I was told that corporate sent out a memo and that they had recently switch video game buyers. He also mentioned Brink as a "banned" title. Be sure to call ahead if you plan on trading...

On another note, microcenter carries 1st party disc only gamecube games at reasonable prices. I nabbed Zelda collectors edition for $20 and a used Kinect for $60.

So one PS3, one 360, and one Wii game and that's it?

Well this will be interesting.

I can confrim that they do not take trades at the Minneapolis/St. Louis Park MN store. They sell used games there but the guy said that they get the games from other stores.

Sorry I don't really know. I don't like buying used games there since they won't let you open the case to see if its complete or not or check how bad the disc is.

Nah, I've been there multiple times and had to kill time waiting on the Video Game CS reps, so I've been through the new/used games more than once. You won't find many $15 games for PS3/Xbox and only a handful of relevant titles under $20 used.

Check the MC website though, you have to choose a store and it will list everything they have instock (including used games). You can browse the store selection from home to see if there's anything to your liking in your price range...
Sorry I don't really know. I don't like buying used games there since they won't let you open the case to see if its complete or not or check how bad the disc is.
I honestly don't think they check the quality of their used trade ins... The two or three games that I actually bought at a decent price at the time had horrible surface damage... So I'm led to believe that they reseal higher priced titles and stick them back on the shelf..

As a former Gaming Employee of Microcenter, there are a few things I would like to point out for you to keep in mind about trade ins there. I will state up front, that it's been a few years since I've worked with the company, but from what I've seen of my store, I'm guessing that not a whole lot has changed.

1. Be prepared to spend a little time browsing.
The system they use to give you credit for your trade-ins is ancient. There's quite a bit of paper work, (YES, PAPER. It's not all electronically done like everyone else does) and the only thing the computer is really used for is to find out how much credit you're going to get, checking the competition or gamespot/IGN online, or finding out weather they have something in stock. Beyond that it's a giant paper weight. In general, the more you bring with you, the more paper work needs to be done, and the longer you'll be staying. It's definitely going to take longer then if you go to gamestop or some other company that takes used games.

2. Condition SHOULD make a difference.
Small scratches will lower your trade in value, missing cases or instruction booklets will also lower the value. It goes down fast. VERY, VERY fast. Many games lose half value or more if any ONE of those conditions apply and halve again if another is also present, so to get the most bang for your buck, keep that game as close to mint as you can, just in case you plan on trading it later. Employees are supposed to check every single game, and if there are any DEEP scratches or it looks like the owner spent his/her time using it less as a game and more as a coaster, they are not supposed to take the game. However, since used games are guaranteed to work or you get your credit back, some employees don't follow this rule, and will take anything.

3. The Gaming Department is a "Low Priority" department.
What this means, is that some/most stores won't have an employee posted back there, and you may have to wander and find someone who can help. Usually these stores use employees from the General Sales Department (GSA). Some stores do have employees permanently posted back there, but it's up to the store manager and/or the assistant manager which option is best for the store.

4. Used Games are Outsourced.
In the beginning, Microcenter used to take these games in and store them somewhere. They discovered that the rate at which they took games in outpaced the rate at which they sold, and they had a hard time with this. Around the time I left the company, they were sending all games to an online company (which shall remain nameless, if for nothing other then that I must confess that I no longer remember the name of it), and this same company was sending a constant stock of used games to Microcenter. So if you sell your game to Microcenter, don't be surprised if you never see it on the shelf. Chances are it's been shipped out.

5. Finally - Keep A close eye on used game "Deals" and "Sales"
If you're going to purchase a used game, beware the ads that state a sale or a special deal. Often these aren't exactly sales so much as a way to bring attention to games that aren't selling well. They are discounted, but not by very much, and the ones that are discounted the most deeply are the ones nobody is buying. This is a great thing if you're interested in that game to begin with, but usually those titles are pretty worthless. Occasionally a gem will show up, but it's a rare thing.

Honestly, and from a personal view, I feel that it's just better to deal with Gamestop. The only REAL plus to trading with Microcenter is that the store credit is good anywhere in the store, and is not limited to gaming related merchandise.

^ really appreciate you posting this info, but i went in today and was told that the system was down but it he was clearly lying to me. I was told during my last trade in i was told its now 1 game per system per person. Its clear their trying to limit these trade ins but my question is why not just lower the trade in values? im sure there just overstocked on games like brink at this pt, that would instantly deter me from trading in there

Probably the paper work was causing too much trouble. Sadly, the corporate heads of the company just don't "Get It" when it comes to used merchandise. They wanted in on the game because of the huge profit margin, then were disappointed that the sales associates weren't getting the desired effect... Generally this was because we spent more time doing paper work for the trade in then actually doing the trade in.

It IS possible he was lying to you about the system going down, but then he might have been telling to truth to some extent. We couldn't take trade in's if we couldn't print the stickers for the game during the trade in, so if he couldn't print the stickers right then and there, telling you the system was down would have been an easier explanation.

The stickers could only be printed during the transaction, and were a required part of the whole asinine process.

I realize I may be painting an ugly picture of Microcenter right now. Generally I don't have a problem with the company, for the most part they provide great service. The people I've worked with and for are, in General, good people and good associates. It's just the whole "Gaming Department" thing wasn't planned out anywhere as well as it should have been, and they seem to be closed to the idea of hiring someone who IS in the know.

Unfortunate really, as they were really on a good track when the Idea was introduced. They just didn't evolve it properly.

Also, they don't lower the trade in values because the department is a low income department. Which is why it's also a low priority department, with minimal to no permanent staffing. Most of the profit comes from used games. Scratch that, most of the profit comes from SELLING used games. Taking in more then they can sell is bad. So they limit the amount they can take in to balance it with the amount going out. Like I said, the process is pretty ... sad, and they really need someone in the upper corporate employees who knows how the gaming industry, specifically the used gaming industry, works.

The only paper work I had to complete was giving my info (name, address, phone number, DL number) so they could match it up with the same account. They didn't do paperwork for every game and they had an online system where they just put the games you wanted to trade in in a cart and gave you a printout at the end. I think the systems more electronic now then before.

At my store, they either accept the game or reject the game depending on the condition. There is no middle ground for the TIV.

Tustin has stopped accepting trade-ins. I think it's a store specific decision. I was left holding 15 gamefly games. Sucks... I may call corporate and complain that the on site advertised prices are not being honored in store.

And to be honest I was really good to those guys I bought the overpriced warranties a couple of times. I think I will return a few items and cancel the warranties to make a point !!

That's good to know. It used to be a real hassle for both employee and customer.

I traded in my $30 GameFly purchase a couple of days ago.

:360:Two Worlds II, :ps3:Mindjack, :360:CoJ: The Cartel, and :ps3:CoJ: The Cartel. All had a $25 TiV. That's over a 300% profit! It almost didn't happen thanks to the gaming employee who had the day off, and another employee from the Build-your-own computer section (who was "one of only 4 people that learned the trade-in system") almost forgetting how to do the whole thing.

Has anyone purchased a used/refurbished console from Micro Center? I'm thinking of getting a refurbished PS3...

Damn that sucks. Thanks for saving me the trip though. I hadn't been back since I was shopping around and saw the Brink/Title Limit sign they put up but I was thinking about gearing up for one more run. Guess I'll have to pass on that now.

Also sucks about getting stuck with the 15 game backlog (hopefully you can unload some to BB, GS, or Amazon though). The MC flips were definitely good while it lasted...

I don't know how it is at Microcenter, but at the retail store I worked at a few years ago canceling a warranty or protection plan was viewed as the worst thing that could happen (more so then theft).

If I get a 'plan' on something and am subsequently treated poorly on another trip the store, I cancel it and ask to speak to a manager and explain why I'm doing it.

Again I can't say for sure what happens at Microcenter, but at my previous employer if an employee caused a 'plan' to be returned heads would roll.

Still not sure what I should do with my 400 in credit at Microcenter, I was thinking about waiting for a Vita but man that thing is bombing in Japan.

A ps3 is usually a pretty safe bet. It's the older 360's you have to look out for. The ps3's almost never have problems that we heard about at the store.
