MLB 2010 Discussion Thread

Ubaldo Jimenez almost looked human today. Almost. I am trying to figure out why Jim Tracy sent him back out into the game for the 8th inning when he already had thrown around 110 pitches.

Jimenez improves to 11-1 by going 7 strong, 2 runs, 6 hits, 8 k's.

Ubaldo had gone 33 innings without giving up a run. Why did Tracy send him back out in the 8th with 110 pitches thrown already?

Ubaldo has had 11 starts in a row with 6 innings, 2 runs or less. First time in 90 years.
Sadly us Met fans know this. We just have to keep saying hopefully he does to make ourselves feel better.

I really can't stand watching K-Rod. Yeah he has been getting the job done but wow does he annoy me. The guy will go 0-2 and then try to make the perfect pitch. He always ends up 3-2. He threw a 3-2 curve last night to a guy hitting before Hanley Ramirez and he walked him. Another over paid player that Minaya signed. Shouldn't he have known why the Angels were so quick to let him leave...
Hey he went on the 15 DL...so atleast we rid him for 15 days....Santos just got sent down because the coritzone shot seems to be helping Blanco.....plus we will be able to Jesus Feliciano finally up here....he is 31, but lets see what he got.

At least it looks like Frenchy is out of his horrendus slump. 10 game hitting streak and added to that by bombing a 3 run homer today.

Now only if the rotation could just have Pelfrys and Santanas...we would be set in the right direction for once.

I just can't seem Francouer being a consistent player for the Mets. I much rather see an outfield of Bay, Beltran, Pagan, when Beltran decides to come back.

Orel Hershiser probably sent Jim Tracy a Hot Coca Sampler Pack in appreciation.

Carlos Silva is 8-0!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The world is ending!!!!!! The World is ending!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thank god for National League ball for mediocre pitchers.

But Barry Zito has been the exception to that rule
But Barry Zito has been the exception to that rule
Barry is 6-2 with a 2.78 era this year.

Because his BABIP is .257, and he's allowed 3 HR in 74 innings. His peripherals suggest an ERA in the 4 range. He's outperformed his peripherals for most of his career, but not by this much.

61.2 innings in 8 starts, 57/4 K/BB ratio, sub-1 WHIP... Cliff Lee's on fire.

i dont know what to think about today's draft pick about the Mets. i am happy that Harvey can throw gas...but reports say he has command issues......i dont like that....and i had them taking Chris Sale at 7th. Well hope Harvey turns out to be the real deal. Welcome to the Mets Matt Harvey!

at least his stache is Keithesque

Strasburg with 8 k's, 2 runs and 4 hits through 5 innings.

11 k's, 0 Walks through 6, 81 pitches. Nats lead 4-2

Retired his last 10 batters, last 7 were K's. Nationals record for K's in a game with 14. This kid has nasty stuff. Plus, he only threw 91 pitches.

Strasburg looking like the real deal. The NL East is about to have a plethora of great young players about to take over the division. Everyone from Strasburg to Heyward, to Davis to Stanton....I'm excited for the future but at the same time quite scared.

94 pitches with 65 of them strikes. No walks. 4 hits (only mistake was that homer). He pitched like he's the love-child of Clemens and Maddux. If he pitches close to this in his next two starts, I'll consider he's for real.

What are his next 2 projected starts then?

I'm honestly surprised the Nationals came back to win that game for Strasburg the way they've been hitting lately (note: They haven't).

We like IKE!!! After blowing that triple by Pagan I thought the Mets might cave...but thank god Davis was facing Mujica. Thats his second home run i believe off of him in about a week.

Mike Pelfrey does not get enough props. 9 innings, 1 ER,6K,0BB.2.23ERA
He continues to dominant and now the Mets have 2 legitimate aces....C'mon Minaya go get us third and we are in business. (this prolly won't happen)

2 back of the first place braves and .5 game back behind the phighten phils.

The Padres definitely showing why they have the NL's best record...pitching for them continues to be dominant...Greggerson was tossing cheese in his appearance and fully impressed with Clayton Richard. (i know the NL is a soft league but give the Pads credit)

now only if we can win something on the road...we can actually be pretty good. C'mon Mets keep proving me wrong.

Mets have to win on the road if they have any shot at the playoffs. Team is Dr Jeckyl and Mr Hyde.

23-9 at home, 8-18 on the road.

Wow. 14Ks, 0BBs and a 100mph fastball for Strasburg. I know it's the Pirates, but that's fucking phenomenal--especially for a pitchers first MLB outing!

Not looking forward to the Braves having him on a division rival for the next however many years...

yeah i know which is why i said...if only we can win on the road...But ill take it for now...we could be much much much worse at this point but they are still in it. Its what i asked for so they are giving me that much.

our division will be chalk full of youngsters in the next coming years...heck the whole mets infield will be home grown in due time. Reece Havens or Reuben Tejeda will start at second and i am pretty sure the Mets will lock up Barajas and Blanco for atleast another year. The Braves are already young as is and Heyward is a super stud. With Stanton and Strasburg up here its going to exciting at the same time scary. Stanton has some serious speed and we all know about Strasburg. I have no clue who is coming up in the phillies farm or if they need anyone from their farm to come up at all.

Yep, lots of young talent in the NL east for sure.

Finally caught the Strasburg highlights on Sportscenter. Damn, he was even more impressive than the statline. 98+ MPH fastball, one of the nastiest curve balls I've seen, and a good change up. Wow!

Definitely the best debut performance I've ever seen.

Happy for Ike Davis. Pelfrey has been a BEAST. Finally living up to the expectations.

Not only to the Mets have to win on the road, they need to start scoring more runs if they want to make any noise in the NL East.
I wonder if the leftover Oriole fan base, all 5000 of them are jumping ship to the Nationals now.
I'm not an Orioles fan by any means, but I fully believe if they ever got good again they have dormant fans waiting to emerge. Not that it will ever happen, and until then their stadium will still just be Fenway/Yankee Stadium South.

People in town are definitely excited for Strasburg, but then I've found Washingtonians are pretty shameless bandwagon jumpers (See Exhibit A: The Caps). The only local team which has any sort of following during lean years is the Redskins. Yeah, interest in the Nats is currently spiked, but if they don't translate Strasburg-Harper into success, they're going to go back to having that awesome stadium half full (if that) every night. Ditto for John Wall coming to town. There's definitely potential for a sports renaissance in this city, but every single one of these franchises (except the Caps) is run so incompetently that it's bound to be screwed up.

When the Nationals moved to DC I thought at the time they would become my NL team, but most likely because of their constant sucking it's never materialized. If they start to put a good product on the field I'll definitely start going to more games, as I suspect a lot of people here would.

Well you get that bandwagon stuff as DC is such a hugely transient city with so many people moving to the area for federal jobs, to be in the political center, all the colleges and universities in the area.

I lived in the DC area for 7 years while in grad school, I hardly ever met/hung out with anyone who was originally from the DC metro area.

I will say I see much the same here in Atlanta. Meet people from all over that place, but not a ton who started in Georgia/Atlanta.

Yeah, that's most of it. Though I must say, while I don't work in government, I'm consistently surprised how many of my colleagues are from Maryland or Virginia originally.

I know plenty of people who are die-hard Redskins fans win or lose, so it's definitely a football town. With the Nationals you have the added fact of them only having been here a few years (and playing in the dreadful-for-baseball RFK for most of that).

I think if the Nationals do get good that they can sustain a fanbase, after all DC is a pretty large media market and the only other franchise closer than NY is the dreadful Orioles. But will fans they gain stick around if they fall on lean years again? Debatable.

There are some Phillies fans in DC, no? I've seen some around the city when I was down there. As dmaul was saying it is hard to tell though, they could've potentially also just been visitors.

Definitely a decent amount of Philly team fans in the DC area.

Sports bars in DC are full of fans of all kinds of different teams since people come form all over. But that's true in most big cities as transplant populations are the norm. The local teams dominate the fanbase, but tons of people rooting for nearly every team in different numbers.

I went to a sports bar in Atlanta for NFL games a few times this past season and there were groups for probably at least 10 or so different teams each weak--more teams represented if you count the people there not as part of a group. For instance, my usual group was Saints fan, a Steelers fan, a Bengals fan and a Raiders fan (myself)!

Sure, we have fans from everywhere like dmaul said. DC is also a big college town, so there are a lot of transplants that way as well, that's how I ended up here.

There are still a significant number of true local sports fans, though as I said mostly they're Redskins fans.

I have Met friends that live in D.C but are originally from the Tri-State.
It looks like the Indians or Detroit then the Chisox.
It's the Indians next, I was watching the Cleveland feed in the Red Sox-Indians game last night and they were pimping it unmercifully.
As a Red Sox fan I root for anyone wearing the laundry, and I certainly have liked Marco Scutaro's brief Red Sox tenure well enough, but this is a bit over the top:

Definitely made me laugh though. :D
Awful parody songs for sports teams are always a good source of mocking laughter. Some of the ones for the Yankees over the years make me want to puke.

Sounds a lot like AZ, but for different reasons, there are just a lot of transplants here that remain loyal to their home teams. That is why you will see Cubs/Dodgers fans come out of the woodwork for D'backs games, or Detroit/Canadian fans for Coyotes games. Hell, I'm from San Diego and my girlfriend is from Chicago. Only team that really has a sustained fan base would be Suns and maybe Cardinals.

I think it's great for that organization and the fans...

he might as well pitch a perfect game against the indians. he is going to kill them.

The Cubs assholes are everywhere. I hate those guys. Los Doyers fans in AZ?! :D

The Dodgers are smokin hot right now. Pitching is lights out down to the 5th starter.
He's pretty dominant so far, but he is facing the Pirates.
Sure the Pirates aren't that great a team and I'm curious how he does against a good offense (potential soon with interleague play starting), but something to keep in mind. He's thrown the most K's in a game against the Pirates this season than any other pitcher. That's got to count for something.

Though Boof made them look awesome last night. Couldn't get an out and still has a 0.00 ERA, due to not getting said out. I'm guess he hit triple digits when/if he records an out this season.

In this case his ERA isn't 0.00, it's INF. Yeah, welcome to Boston Boof.
Looks like the Mets are going to lose Johan's start. I wonder if he gets to 10 wins this year. 12 should be the max.
Mets can't hit anything today....oh wait it's been like that most of the year.

Anyone think Santana regrets going to the Mets?
