MLB 2010 Discussion Thread

Looks like the Red Sox have a great shot at picking up another game on the Rays and Yanks tonight. Three highest win totals in baseball in the same division, incredible (and unsurprising).

Yankees offense forgot that there was a game today.

It's going to be a long season for the AL East for all 3 teams. I picture the Rays being the one to fall out due to the amount of young arms in their rotation and the fact that the Yankees/Sox can afford to add to their team.

That's how I see it too. Even as a Sox fan, I find it unfortunate that the Rays are at such a disadvantage in the division. Well.. not too unfortunate.

I find it unfortunate that the Blue jays are at such a disadvantage in the division. They have a good team, but they're still only 4th best in a division of 5.

Playing the Red Sox is just frustrating, every time the D'backs would score a run the Sox would score one right after.

Diamondbacks have been awful on the road, and mediocre at home this year.

Could there be a more entertaining series than the Red Sox-Dodgers series kicking off tonight? Two great teams with great records, the return of Manny, Joe Torre managing against the Sox again, not to mention Boston might be able to exact some small revenge on LA the weekend right after the Lakers beat the Celtics. I know I'll be glued to the tv.

Subway Series could be more entertaining.

Nah. SS is getting boring and stale. Manny returning to Boston is the highlight of the weekend. Sox would have probably won the 2008 World Series if Manny wasn't being Manny.

There's one of those every year though. Hopefully the Mets sweep them. :D

They also wouldn't have won in 2004 or 2007 without him. So there's that.

Is it going to be on national television? I'd love to watch it, Red Sox fans will give it to the Dodgers for sure... hell they were chanting "BEAT LA" throughout the series against the D'backs. It will be an entertaining series without a doubt.

Yes, tomorrow is on FOX (90% sure) and Sunday is on ESPN (100% sure). I have mlb.tv though, which is fantastic streaming through the PS3.

Sox are going to be 1 game out of first after today.

Time for the Yankees to salvage the season and FIRE Clueless Joe 2.0. Yankees had the tying run on second with no outs. Clueless Joe 2 puts Granderson into the game and the Mets bring in a left. Granderson's OPS is about oooo .550 this year and has been under .600 the last couple of seasons. Does Clueless Joe 2 have Grandy bunt? fuck no! Granderson strikes out and the runner doesn't score.

Clueless Joe 2 follows that brain fart by putting in Chan Ho Park into the game. 1-0 game turns into a 3-0 game. Should I mention how Cluless Joe 2 keeps Doucheira in the 3 spot in the lineup even though Doucheira has done Jack Shit this year. Great Job Joe! Go join the unemployment line you stupid piece of shit.

I consider the above post a good sign. :D

The Sox are definitely on a roll, and it has coincided nicely with the Rays and Yankees scuffling some.

The bad news is JD Drew came up lame fielding a line drive tonight (as he is wont to do). It didn't look too bad to me, but this is JD Drew we're talking about, so who knows.

I am going to go make myself feel better by watching highlights of the Bruins getting bruined by the Flyers and the Celtics getting half a bruined by the Lakers.

Ooooo, I just realized that Clueless Joe 2 is in his last year of the contract. Only a couple of more months to deal with his stupidity. Guy bunts with great hitters all of the time but MR .550 OPS vs lefties gets to swing away in a game where the Yankees are desperate for a RUN.

I'll say it again, he can't make his players play. The team is underachieving so much right now it's ridiculous. No offense and a horrible bullpen. Yes, some of it falls on Girardi, but not all of it. I agree Granderson should have been bunting as soon as Feliciano was brought into the game, but those first two strikes were nasty, and after being in an 0-2 hole, he just tried to survive, and failed miserably. Simply put, Feliciano beat him. It happens.

As for Park, Joba just got destroyed last night. Who else can Girardi go to??? There's nobody in that pen outside of Mo who can get outs right now. As good as Hughes has been as a starter this year, I almost miss having him in the pen because it was the closest thing to '96 this team has had in terms of shortening the game. Finding a 5th starter is a lot easier than finding a reliable guy for the 7th/8th inning.

Joba was supposed to be that guy, and he's been a huge disappointment. Park has performed horribly as well (for whatever reason, Asian pitchers are always awful in NY). Then, yeah, you've got big bats like Teixeira and A-Rod (and even Jeter to an extent) having down years, and you're left relying on guys like Cervelli and Gardner to drive in runs. None of that has anything to do with Girardi. And if you think he's going to get fired one year after winning a championship (not even accounting for what the team does the rest of this season), you're an idiot.

Yeah, Clueless Joe cant make the offense play but he can change around the lineup and he can have MR .550 OPS against Lefties BUNT against a lefty.

Jeter has turned into Mr Groundout on the first pitch KING. Why not put Gardner into the leadoff role and move Jeter down to second. That way when Jeter swings and grounds out on the first pitch like usual, the Yankees will have a runner in scoring position. Why is Mark DOUCHEIRA who has been slumping since the playoffs of last year still in the 3 slot? Guy has done JACK SHIT all year.

Robertson wasn't available today for the 8th? Guy has only given up 1 or 2 earned runs in the past month. Why did Joe bring Logan out for the 9th after pitching in the 8th? OOooo I forgot why, it's becasue Joe is a fucking moron.

Too bad your Mets will choke again in September. I hope you enjoy your June wins. I am going to go watch the 2000 World Series DVD and have a laugh at your expense. Maybe I'll go on MLB.tv and watch the the Castillo drop popup game from last year. Just remember, your Mets are still the Yankees bitch.

I have to hand it to you, few people could simultaneously pull off both ragging on their own team and still tearing down everyone else's as shamelessly as you. Touche.

Granderson's OPS:

2008: .859
2009: .780
2010: .745

He's been disappointing since his 07/08 seasons, but wildc, relax. His BABIP is low for someone who hits line drives at a 24% clip. It'll move upward, and with it, his batting average will also rise.

The Rangers destroyed the Astros tonight with Justin Smoak becoming a better player with each game. Had a Homer and 4 RBIs tonight. The Astros are a terrible team though.

This was also the Rangers first 6 game road winning streak since 1991. Rangers could be the biggest sleeper team this year.
Got to love the Mets shutting out the Yankees on the road with Takahashi starting.
Tak getting outta of that bases loaded inning was HUGE! I though Cano was going to get him pretty good but walking him i guess proved to be a good thing.

Big Pelf vs a hot handed Phil Hughes tomorrow. Going to be a another great duel.

What a change in a year for the Mets. last year we were sucking and getting ran over by any team in the league to actually competing this year. I had them out by June....surely they are already surpassing my expectations.

I also hope that in someway Angel Pagan keeps his spot. He was the stellar tonight and he is carrying a hot bat. I am not missing Beltran one bit if Pagan keeps playing like this.

Can't a mets fan be actually happy for once? i guess not lol.

blame your team for not hitting with RISP today. Not one person hit in the clutch today. Whats happening to the Yankees right is what happend to the Mets in April and May. I am pretty sure they will pick it up soon and start being the yankees again.

Don't look now, but the team with the AAA outfield (Darnell McDonald, Daniel Nava, and Josh Reddick now that Drew's hurt) has the best record in baseball since April 20. If not for the National League, they might have needed to make a trade.
oh, wildcpac. you don't know how bad I want to see how you are in real life.
Yeah, I'm kinda starting to wish he would make Youtube videos like DrP1zza. I'd love to see his "after the game" monologues, haha. :)

When the Mets shut out the Yankees I will enjoy it. Thanks!

Why do all Yankee fans go to the past when their team loses in the present?

Oh and wildpac you are going to watch the 2000 WS where all the Yankees were on Steroids right? I guess that WS shouldn't count either since you still believe the Red Sox's didn't win, so technically you shouldn't be watching that one. Maybe go back 15 or 20 more years.

If Drew is out for any extended period of time, I think they're going to need to make a trade regardless of how well they've been playing.

I'll take David DeJesus for 1000, Alex

Depends on his cost. If they land him, who do they move? Who do they sit if all are healthy?

Sadly I'm not confident Ellsbury, Cameron, and Drew will all be healthy at the same time this year. Even if they are, with the injuries they've had they're all going to need frequent days off (as they already get now). Having 4 healthy OFs for 3 spots is a better problem to have than no healthy outfielders and essentially having to start a AAA outfield on a WS contender. As for who they move, they need to carry 4 or 5 OFs anyway. Sending guys like McDonald, Nava or Reddick (who's already been riding the shuttle) back to AAA is no big deal.

Yes, they'd have to give up something to get him, since he's one of the best players on the Royals, but the Red Sox have a fairly deep farm system and many of their top prospects are blocked for the foreseeable future.

Are we talking about the same 2000 that had Roid Cheats on the Mets as well? Piazza broke down after putting up monster numbers. GEE I wonder what happened to him. How about Edgardo Alfonzo? Guy broke down and hit the wall at the age of 28. He was definitely clean!

How big of a playoff lead are the Mets going to blow in the final 2 weeks of the season? 6 games this time? 2009 sure was a trip. 150 million payroll for 92 loses. Mets set a record that will probably never be matched. Almost 1.5 million per loss. Great job Mets!

Yankees still have 2009 if nothing from the 90's counts. I guess the 86 Mets do not count either since all of the players were snorting coke in between at bats.

Your Mets will always be the Yankees personal bitch. I am going to go watch game 6 of the 1999 NLCS so I can have a good laugh as Kenny Rogers walks in the NLCS clinching run.

Then I am going to go watch game 7 of the 2006 NLCS so I can laugh at Yadier Molina of all people hitting a game winning homerun. Then I am going to have a bigger laugh when Beltran leaves the bat on his shoulders to strike out with the bases loaded to end the NLCS.

Then I am going to watch the 2000 World Series to top it all off. I am going to have the ultimate laugh as Luis Sojo of all people gets a clutch 2 run single off the Mets "Ace" of Al Letier. Then I am going to laugh when Steroid Piazza flies out to Bernie as the Yankees win the Subway Series by kicking the Mets Ass.

Maybe if I have time, I'll watch a broken down Paul Oneill get a big hit off of Benetiz and Jose Vizcaino gets the walkoff hit in game 1. I will definitely have to watch Timo Perez getting thrown out at home because he thought Zeille had a homerun and slowed down heading into second. I do not think the Mets franchise has gotten over Timo's bonehead running.

Rangers have a good team, but like others have mentioned, it's kind of hard to be a sleeper when the Rangers finished 2nd in the WC last year. Plus the Angels are playing much better baseball after a disaster start. Rangers still have another 16 games left with the Angels. Main thing is that the Rangers have played 3 less games so far this year compared to the Angels.

Why don't you post his numbers against left handers the past several seasons. That OPS drops a good 200-300 points. Clueless Joe 2.0 should have had the bunt sign on against a left hander with a runner on 2nd and no outs with the team desperate to score a run down 1-0. Joe will bunt every time else when it doesn't call for it and he will do it with great hitters.

Hughes is becoming Reyes personal pitch. Odds on Reyes hitting 4 homeruns today? Solo shot for the first, 2 run shot for the second. That means a 3 run shot for the 3rd and a Grand Slam for the 4th.

Teixeira "scored" the first run by grounding into a double play, lol. So, I guess...yay that he didn't strike out? Even with that home run, dude is still hitting .226. That's freaking TERRIBLE for being almost half way through the season. Has he turned into Jason Giambi ALREADY? I know he's wearing the guy's old number, but come on..

Even if he turns it on from this point on, I don't know how good of a season he could put together. I'm just tired of these guys who "don't hit until the weather warms up". All that translates to is they don't work enough in the offseason. I'd love to see Brian Cashman tell him "Well, your checks don't start arriving until the weather warms up". See if that changes anything.

I am even more shocked that Pelfrey gives up a 2 run shot to Granderson.

Yankees get beat by 3 scrub pitchers in a row. But have scored like 10 plus runs off of Halladay and Pelfrey who will both finish in the top 5 for Cy Young. GO FIGURE!

I guess thats parody for you.

hanging sliders will get you punished by most hitters...and thats what pelf did to Tex and Granderson.

What do you guys feel like the Yankees need to do at the deadline?

edit: well road winning streak comes to end but I cant say im pissed at all. Pelf just left up two bad pitches otherwise he pitched well and hats off to Phil Hughes. He pitched lights out today.

Mo never ages...that man is ridiculous.

Hughes with another quality start. Now, he just has to figure out how to pitch to Reyes, haha. Nice to see Joba with a relatively painless inning as well. This is how it's supposed to work. 7 from the SP, 1 from Joba, 1 from Mo.

I can't believe the Yanks didn't score in the bottom of the 8th though. That's the kind of shit that worries me with this team. 2nd and 3rd, nobody out...and you don't score??? That's just players not getting their job done.

Laser Show? You mean baldie brother of a child molestor? I could have sworn Sox fans told me Baldie was better than Cano. Still waiting on that one.

9 Homeruns have been hit so far at Citizens Tee Ball Park. Fillies blew a 9-4 lead in the top of the 9th. Twins took the lead in the 10th and blew it in the bottom of the inning.

I am so glad that I am not a Fillies fan. Bullpen gives up 9 runs in 3 innings from the 9th to the 11th innings.

Uncle Chaulie with the ultimate bonehead decision of the game. First base open and he has the pitcher pitch to Delmon Young who has been hot for the past month. Instead of facing some scrub with 2 outs in a tied game.
