MLB: The Show 10 worth getting a ps3 for?

Here's my dilemma: I love baseball but the 360 has produced bad baseball games year after year for quite awhile. Is MLB the show 10 worth getting a ps3 for? I also need a blu-ray for the 3d compatibility which I'll have to get anyways. Any input would be great.
 
I actually bought a ps3 a few months ago specifically to play heavy rain and the show. Not being able to play even a competent game of baseball on 360 was driving me nuts. Thats basically all my ps3 is used for is playing the show and watching blu rays, and I still think feel it was worth the purchase.

To put it plainly, if you love baseball, make the jump. You won't be sorry. If it turns out you don't like the show, you still have a great blu ray player.
 
Well probably 1/2 of all PS3 purchases in St. Louis are for The Show. It's one of the best exclusives on the system. There are some other great exclusives as well, such as God of War, Buzz, MGS 4, Valkyria Chronicles, Uncharted 2, etc.

If you have a Best Buy near you, I think Sony has all of them put The Show in their demo PS3's right now (at least all the ones in St. Louis have them) so you may want to check that out to play it for a bit.

In terms of Blu-Rays, it's still one of the best players on the market, plus it's already confirmed its getting the 3D update if that's important to you, and it will always be the first player to have firmware upgrades available.

I would say it's worth it for the reasons you mentioned, but I wouldn't discount the great exclusives PS3 has.
 
That was the first reason I picked up a PS3 for aside from God of War 3. The Show has always been my favorite baseball game and 10 is great.
 
I haven't played a baseball game since NES days. Haven't watched a full baseball game in years. This game, by far, is one of the best, most comprehensive titles period. The game is amazing and just happens to be a sports game. I couldn't even tell you the last time I paid for a sports game
 
MLB 10 is the best baseball game I've played since MVP Baseball 2005. It may even be better; I just haven't had enough time with it to make a fair comparison.

As a Blu-ray player, it's pretty good. Just spring for the remote, if possible. I haven't been able to do so yet, but man, the controller is horrible for navigating Blu-ray/DVD menus, unlike the Xbox controller.

If you have a lot of 360 games, you may not find a whole lot to play on the PS3. To be honest, it has a lot fewer quality exclusives than the Wii or the 360. But I'd recommend the following games, besides MLB 10:

God of War Collection
God of War 3
Both Ratchet & Clank Future games
Little Big Planet
Heavy Rain
Valkyria Chronicles
Uncharted (haven't played the second, but it's supposed to be great, too)

I'm not saying those are the only good exclusives. Those are just recommendations based on what I've played in the 4 months I've owned a PS3.

I will add the following recommendations Matt didn't mention:
Buzz Quiz World (you MIGHT find Buzz Quiz TV cheaper, but the newer Buzz has better gameplay, especially online.)
Heavenly Sword (most places you can get it for $20-$30, check Gamestop Game Days sale or Walmart.)
MGS4
Infamous
Killzone 2

Also don't forget many other 3rd party games, like Batman: AA, Dante's Inferno, and Mirror's Edge for example, have extra free content/DLC with them vs. the 360 versions. Definately spring for the clip on triggers for the L2/R2 buttons for the Dual Shocks (you can find the thread in the PS3 forum but they're clip-ons that turn the L2/R2 buttons more into actual mini-triggers to be more similar to the 360 controller.
 
Granted, I'm playing the PC version that I got for 3 bucks from GS, but I dont see what is so hella bad about MLB 2K10. I absolutely *love* the pitching mechanic and the "graphical errors" that pop up from time to time dont seem to make any impact on the gameplay. I keep reading reviews that give 2K10 a bad score, but they never really justify it. In fact, most of them praise the analog control over the 3-click of The Show, and they think the "My Player" mode trounces the "Road to the Show".

So it leaves me wondering is MLB 10: The Show really that much better. The scores would say so, but the prose doesnt really bear that out. Perhaps the online is broken in which case I could see that being a deal breaker for some, but the Franchise mode seems just fine.

By all the accounts I've read, 2k10 is significantly better than 2k9 was. That said, it is still playing catch up. I certainly haven't read every review but the ones I've noticed have put 2k10 around a 7 and The Show at 9 or 10. In a world without The Show, I don't think anyone would be ragging on 2k10 very much but when you have two games involving the same sport, comparisons are inevitable and in this case, there's one that is clearly better.

As far as buying a PS3 for it, I don't generally advocate buying any system for one game but there are several worthwhile PS3 exclusives and now that Sony has apparently found its footing this gen, more should continue to show up. In 2007, I felt like an asshole for buying a PS3, now I'd really miss it if it were gone.

In the end, it comes down to how badly you want to play a good baseball game. There's always going to be at least ONE game that's going to draw you to purchase a system. Get one and be happy. If you buy one, then its up to you to get you're money's worth out of it.

2K10 is probably the best baseball game 2K has put out on the 360 (only one close is 2K7 but I have only played the 2K10 demo.) But when 2K6 and 2K8 were pretty much unplayable because of the game freezing, and 2K9 had so many bugs the game was broken, they have a LONG way to go to get to The Show's level.

If you want a specific example of how The Show is better, listen to the last CAGCast episode. Shipwreck has 2K10 and is doing the My Player mode and within 20 games was in the major leagues. This ALMOST never happens in real life unless you're a superstar prospect (see Jason Heyward) and even then, you're likely to sit in the minors for at least 1 month so your team has 1 more year before you're eligible for free agency (see Stephen Strausberg.)

The trophy for getting your Road to the Show player to the majors is to do it within 2 seasons, so you can see how hard it really is as you always start in AA.

Just so you can't accuse me of being a fanboy against 2K Sports, I have owned each NBA 2K game since 2K2 on the PS2. Even with a step down last year, 2K basketball is still the dominant hoops title, and if EA is going 75-100% arcade style basketball this year with Live as is rumored, that gap will widen.
 
I've played mlb 2k10 and I think it's okay, but not something I'd want to spend 50 dollars on. I agree with the remarks that mvp baseball was great.

I guess the slim is the way to go? My current blu ray should get me around 120 on the market. Anyone know of any ps3 deals? Should I wait for one right around the corner? It looks like used ps3 are only 50 bucks cheaper than a new one :/. I'd rather get new with the warranty.
 
I don't think you can get anything other than the slim if you're buying new. Too bad you didn't get in on the Black Friday deal like I did. For the usual price of the system, I got a bundle with 2 games that were brand new- Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time, and Little Big Planet: Game of the Year Edition. LBP had been out for a year, but the GOTY edition with $30 worth of DLC had just recently been released.

As far as I know, there are no deals. In fact, I don't know of a single place that has systems in stock besides Amazon. But with them, you get no tax and free shipping. In fact, if you have never used the free 1 month trial of Amazon Prime, you can do that and get free 2 day shipping. I did that with my last order and, even though I chose 2 day shipping, I got my items the next day after they mailed them. Just be sure to set you Prime options to "Do not automatically renew/charge my card" (not the exact wording, obviously) if you don't want to pay the $80 yearly fee. You just have to check a box; don't even have to worry about remembering to cancel by the date on which they would start charging.

For me, visual issues in 2K10 include the warping of the ball into an infielder's glove without an animation to show them making any kind of real effort for that ball, crowds sometimes stay in their seats when a homerun ball is hit in their direction, and some players just don't look anywhere close to their real life selves (on Cleveland, Jake Westbrook, a veteran pitcher, is Latin American rather than white and Michael Brantley is practically white) so there are issues that don't affect gameplay nearly as much as the glitches and such in 2K9.

The ease of hitting homeruns is much less of an issue in 2K10, though I could still get homeruns easily with Travis Hafner that really shouldn't be the case if it were as good of a sim as it should be. While I like the pitching in 2K10, it's hard to tell how the pitch is affected if I don't make a perfect gesture, which is easier to tell in The Show's simpler pitching mechanic.

Do you have links to people saying My Player is clearly better than Road to the Show? I can't imagine anyone saying My Player is better if they've played both since Road to the Show is basically the extremely polished and refined version of what My Player.
