MMA (UFC, Strikeforce, Bellator, Invicta, etc.) Discussion Thread -- Version II

God dammit, man. I'm a Faber fan, but he fought like a loser. That was like the opposite of the Tate/Holm fight.

He has the right strategy in the 1st round, has some success...and then just completely abandons it and tries to kickbox the rest of the fight against a much quicker opponent.

Shitty cornering too. They should have been screaming at him to grab onto Cruz at all costs. Any time Cruz has room to back up, you're not going to hit him. That should be common fucking sense. Like Rogan even said, "it doesn't matter how many times you pull the trigger if nobody's there."

Terrible fight from Faber. Definition of coasting to a loss.

LOL, well I bet Jacare is pumped. Calling Bisping "the best at 185" was a bit much. Literally 3-4 fighters are chomping at the bit for a free belt right now.

Credit to Bisping for capitalizing on a great opportunity, but Rockhold didn't lose to a better fighter. He fucked up and got caught.

Great night of fights with two nice upsets.

Super excited to see Hendo destroy Lombard. Lombard is known to be a bully and a jerk at his gyms, so I was happy to see him laid out like that. Hendo is awesome and I love watching him, but he should retire on that. Go out with a huge KO win as a big underdog.

I'm not a huge Bisping fan, but I can't stand Rockhold. I know most fighters have personas they sell, but Rockhold just seems like he is genuinely a douchebag. Rockhold should've taken out Bisping, but he didn't respect him and just planned to toy with Bisping until finishing him. Guy is such a baby that he wouldn't even walk over to the announcement of the winner. He just pouted with Cormier in his corner.

Biggest disappointment of that night was Faber and Cruz. I expected Cruz to pick apart Faber the whole fight, but then the 1st round was competitive with good scrambles, a big slam by Faber, etc. and I started to think I was wrong and this was gonna be a great fight. Then rounds 2 - 5 were just what I expected in the first place.

The Brock announcement was random. I don't know who they will face him up against. There were reports last week that Mark Hunt was told stay healthy and ready, so maybe this will be the fight. Or maybe, just maybe, we will get the Fedor vs. Brock fight that has been in the works for about 8 years now. Probably not though.

I wasn't a Bisping fan at all until I saw him in real life. The guy treats the fan really good and he seems like a real genuine cool person once you get to know him. I think most of his antics are just part of being an entertainer.

Hendo and the ending is pretty hilarious.

I don't know what happened but something occurred between the UFC and Ariel Helwani, he was escorted out of the building and was told that he was banned for life.

Edit:

I guess he broke the Brock Lesnar fight news before the UFC did.

Man, the post fight press conference was one of the most uncomfortable I've ever seen.

Faber was super gracious and humble...and Cruz seemed really defensive. I remember him acting like that after the Dillashaw fight, but I at least gave him the benefit of the doubt because a lot of questions were about if he was injured again. But now, it just feels like he's back to being so smug. He won the damn fight, dominated in most respects, and he's not even smiling up there. Lighten up, dude. When Bisping tried to joke about Cruz and Faber arguing, of course Dom missed it and got snarky too.

Bisping was definitely gloating a good bit, which I guess he earned. He did at least mention he was just acting silly and playing it up for the camera. And what he said about his family and his love for the UK was very real. He just seems like one of those guys that's hard to get a read on because even when he's joking, it's fairly obnoxious...and that could rub people the wrong way.

Rockhold wasn't exactly gracious either. I mean, I guess you can't blame him. They both talked a lot of shit before the fight, and he ended up on the losing side. There's no way that pill is going down easy...especially with Bisping rubbing it in. But that's why you don't take opponents lightly. He definitely doesn't deserve a rematch though. Let Bisping fight Jacare...and have Rockhold fight Romero or Weidman (depending on the timing of their situations).

Also, after reading more about the Lesnar situation last night, I'm really not happy about it. It just looks super sketchy. He's still under contract with WWE...and this is a one off fight. He's also scheduled to participate at SummerSlam a month later.

Sooo...how do they know Brock won't have a broken arm, nose, orbital, etc. a month later? Are they really willing to risk him being injured and not able to perform? Knowing this, it almost makes me certain that he won't face a high level opponent. Even a guy like Mark Hunt could just absolutely blast him into the great beyond. Is Vince McMahon going to bring Lesnar into SummerSlam with a concussion and a broken nose?

This makes no sense to me. Why bring the guy in for one fight to get smashed, knowing that he has major contractual obligations with his current employer a month later? I hate to ever think about rigged fights in the UFC...but outside of giving him a washed up opponent who poses very little threat, I don't see how this works.

I'm guessing Lesnar got the itch. Same thing seems to happens to fighters when they retire. After a year or so, they want back in to show that they are still who they were. BJ Penn is trying to do it again right now. Tito still tries to stick around doing it, etc. Lesnar may also hate how much his legacy is questioned now. He went from baddest man on the planet, to everyone talking about the easy road he got to the title against a over-the-hill light heavyweight. The most impressive wins of his career are against Frank Mir (after Mir took home his leg in the first fight), and Shane Carwin (where Shane pretty much threw the fight away by blowing his wad in 5 minutes and not being able to stand at the beginning of the 2nd round).

Even the 2nd Frank Mir fight wasn't going his way until Frank through a flying knee that got him taken down.

Then finally this is a band-aid or slap against McGregor. UFC wants this card to be the biggest ever, even without McGregor. I know the UFC smoothed over with McGregor, so this could just be a band-aid, or Dana and Lorenzo could be showing McGregor that they can make huge cards without him.

I do think most top guys would flatten Brock at this point though. Hunt, Rothwell, Cain, JDS, etc. would steamroll him. Brock should fight maybe Stefan Struve, Barnett, or someone along those lines to keep it relevant but not crazy. I'm still hoping beyond reason that maybe Dana is going to throw a big sack of rubles at Fedor.

I don't follow the WWF at all, but is Brock still a giant superstar? They could be okay with this if Brock's stardom has faded and they think being able to push him as a "real fighter" could be good for SummerSlam and beyond. On a different topic, I googled briefly and there are so many events these days for pro-wrestling. It is supposed to go SummerSlam and then Survivor Series followed my Royal Rumble and finally WrestleMania. I remember I was super excited when they added King of the Ring back in the early 90's.

Yeah, that's really strange. I wonder if Vince McMahon was like "Oh, yeah...by the way, we want Lesnar to win at UFC 200" and just totally screwed the UFC.

...well, he's fighting Hunt. Probably not going to end well for Brock, but props for not fighting someone he was just going to run over as publicity for his wrestling career.

Wow - Mark Hunt. Kind of surprising. Very high risk for Brock in this. Hunt's low center of gravity and good defense may be a massive problem. Hunt starts out kind of slow feeling out the other fighter, so I wonder if Brock will do that usual rush he does alot. Like when he immediately took down Cain (didn't do anything with and was finished soon after, but still took him down).

I was thinking a Struve or Gonzaga level fighter, or a super fight like pulling out CroCop or Fedor. Granted none of these fights would matter for the rankings, they would be fun to watch. Guys like Struve and Gonzaga he could beat with the right gameplan. I think Fedor would still smash him, but if he did it would be the superfight that was promised years ago.

My prediction is Hunt by KO. If Brock is going to with I'd say submission  - either Kimura or Americana. I don't see Hunt making the same mistake Carwn made and punch himself out so badly that he can barely manage to stand up from his corner.

I wonder how long he's actually been training for this. Having a really light/lackluster match at Wrestlemania this year (when everyone was kind of expecting some insane, hard hitting bloodbath) suddenly makes a lot more sense if he was already preparing for a UFC event.

Ha, as soon as I posted my last comment, I thought "ya know...I wonder if they took it down simply because they're getting ready to replace it with a fight announcement. Nah! They'd make a big spectacle out of it and have everything ready to be flipped with a switch." Shows what I know. Kind of odd how that played out, but I guess the UFC has its hands full banning reporters for life and whatnot.

As for Lesnar v Hunt...Brock has a HUGE reach advantage. Granted, his boxing is pure dogshit, but if he could JUST learn a jab, he could keep Hunt off of him until the time is right to take him down. But yeah, if Lesnar does his patented gorilla charge, Hunt will have a great opportunity to clip him McGregor/Aldo style.

Mostly, Hunt needs to stay disciplined, make sure his cardio is on point, and wait for the inferior fighter to come through. Most fighters have shown, the longer the fight goes with Brock, the better your odds. Hunt just has to survive that early flurry, and then let his superior skills carry him.

As long as Hunt is not Mir-level-retarded, he should win this easily.

Holy crap. I can't believe Kimbo died. That's awful, man. As much of a punchline as he became, he always seemed like a really good dude who just wanted to take care of his family. I can't believe that after the Dada 5000 incident that Kimbo is the one who is no longer here. That's like some Final Destination stuff.

Multiple sources saying Dana was full of shit this whole time.

http://www.flocombat.com/article/42703-sources-100-sale-of-ufc-ownership-imminent

I can't even process selling the UFC right before UFC 200. It almost feels like a last hurrah. The article tries to say that most business operations would remain the same (even Dana White possibly staying on board), but I just don't see it. If this sale goes down (which does seem like a given with this news), I'd bet a lot will change. I guarantee Joe Rogan will be out. Mike Goldberg could be out too. Hell, I could even easily see Bruce Buffer not wanting to deal with new employers who aren't his friends.

After all the steps to grow the business...legalize MMA in NY...it would be sad to see this play out like a cold-hearted "business is business" decision. I love MMA, but I could see the UFC facing a huge backlash if this goes through.

It looks like if it goes through it probably won't be announced until after UFC 200.

I can't see them coming in and cleaning house though. UFC has made it where it is today with it's colorful people like Dana, Rogan, Goldie, Buffer, etc. Not that they are always right of course. Dana can be unprofessional, Rogan's hype for certain people can be insane, and Goldberg knows just about nothing about MMA and often times seems to not know where he is. I don't think the UFC would thrive if it became "professional" - at least not right now.

Fertitas own an empire, but I'm not sure what else Dana has except the UFC. He may stay own as a part owner again and continue to run day to day operations. For all his faults and the times he has put his foot in his mouth, I still kind of like Dana. He is a fan, and not just a body in a suit.

As for this weekend. Interested in seeing Rory vs. Thompson. Thompson destroyed Hendricks so it should be a good fight. I'm also very curious to see how Rory comes back from the brutal fight against Lawler. I'm pretty sure that ranks top 10 on the brutal factor. Lawler is a scary dude. For what he lacks in certain aspects he makes up with an awesome chin and putting people through a meat grinder the last two rounds. Hendricks, Carlos, and Rory all had brutal round 4 and 5's. Hendricks pretty much ran and hid like a bitch, Carlos was game but ended up losing a super close fight, and Rory was game until his body just said no more and he just collapsed in a heap in the 5th.

Rory's last fight may have been one of those fights that seem to change a fighter so that they are never the same. JDS hasn't looked the same since his Cain fights. Josh Kosheck was a shell of himself after GSP, and still panics if anyone punches his face after the way GSP blew out his orbital.

Rory is a weird dude though - he posts a lot of strange twitter stuff and loves guns. Maybe he comes back just fine.

Well, I don't think it would be the new owners cleaning house so much. I think it would be people who don't want to deal with new bosses. Rogan talks almost every single podcast now about not wanting to be employed anymore. And that as much as he loves MMA and being at UFC events, he enjoys doing the Fight Companion podcasts even more. HIs contract ends in August. So, between that and this sale...I'd be shocked if he signs a new deal.

Goldberg...is probably more of a stretch. He's always been a goofy company man kind of guy. But he's been doing this a long time (I remember when Jeff Blatnick was his partner). He could just stay on because he loves the work, but you never know.

And Buffer...I don't know. Maybe the job is too perfect to ever leave. But he's the oldest of the group...and who knows how he'd feel about new management coming in, especially if Rogan and Dana aren't there.

I could easily see it being a domino thing though. Either everybody goes or nobody goes. But Rogan, I'm almost certain would be gone. He has the most reasons for not needing the job. He's got his stand-up, his podcast, in addition to being pretty rich already.

We are in some backwards world right now where Fabio Maldonado smashed Fedor. The fight should've been stopped and it was a 10-8 round or 10-7 round. Fedor's best case was a draw, yet the judges give it to him.

The commentator was awesome. Putin may have him thrown in the Gulag for commentary.

"Fedor has no reason to be proud of himself." was the best comment by the commentator.

Some others were like - this was supposed to be an easy fight for Fedor, supposed to be easy money, looks like Fedor won't be signed by UFC, why won't Fedor use his wrestling, why isn't Fabio trying to finish Fedor - is it because he is tired, because Fedor is a legend, or something else?

It was actually kind of depressing watching Fedor like that. He must've completely blew off this fight. He didn't fight smart like he did against Jeff Monson using his kicks, etc. He just went out there swinging bombs for headshots. Crazy depressing.

I mean...what do you expect when they let the guy fight in his backyard...which also happens to be a place where legitimacy is always questioned. As much as Fedor accomplished in his career, I just have to call him a pussy, man. He is a straight up pussy who always took the easy road at every turn. People bitch about Rousey and McGregor being "protected", but nobody's legacy was protected more than Fedor's. He might as well fight Ken Shamrock next.

I know he isn't facing top competition, but he always fought the very best until the last few years. It is more of a sign of him falling apart as he gets old.

He was Pride champ when Pride had a much better HW division. He then fought Tim and Andrei who were both top 5 in the world. Then over to Strikeforce where he beat Brett Rogers (when Brett looked impressive after KO'ing Andrei in about 1 minute) and then the loss to Werdum. If he didn't lose to Werdum in Strikeforce he would've fought Overeem next. Fedor started looking old around the time he beat Arlovski, but it has just gotten worse and worse.

His current fights look just like retirement league fights. Jeff Monson, Rizzo, Satoshi (granted Satoshi was supposed to be the next big thing until he got exposed). It is just more painful to the see the p4p number 1 in the world facing guys of this calibur. Just better off to ride into the sunset.

Sure, there are some solid names on his resume, but there are several he avoided too. He never fought Barnett. He never fought Couture. He never fought Lesnar. He never fought Overeem (like you mentioned).

Just a decent sized group of guys who were at or near the top of the sport for a good chunk of Fedor's prime. And he never tested himself against any of them.

It's kind of like Ben Askren being regarded as a great Welterweight. Yes, he's good...but he's a pussy for avoiding the best fighters.

He was going to fight Barnett until Barnett was busted for steroids (time number 3 I believe). The only big name he missed at the time was Lesnar (and maybe Couture). Overeem he was supposed to fight, but then his career went south.

I don't think he avoided anyone particularly. He fought Big Nog multiple times who was 100% the #1 HW in the world when the fought then Cro-Cop and a whole host of other top 5 in the worlds. Now he should avoid big names since he is a shell of his former self, but at the time he was in the better leagues. Pride HWs were better than UFC at the time, and Strikeforce HWs were better at the time also. When he was in Strikeforce there was Werdum, Overeem, Bigfoot, Cormier, Arlovski, Sergei, and a few others.

I wish he fought Couture for the super fight - but honestly the HWs over in Strikeforce were better. Even in the current top 10/5 of UFC he's fought Hunt, Arlovski, and Werdum. The reason he didn't fight Lesnar was his team is so crooked and refused to play ball.

The biggest issue is that he is just a shell of himself. The fight IQ is gone. The Sambo is gone. The Judo is gone. I don't know if maybe his body has been through to many wars and he can't do the old style - like Dan Henderson, or he just doesn't care any more and swing bombs. He should've gone in there and immediately take Fabio down and submitted/TKOd him. Instead he just stood there trading bombs, he also threw the like 2 kicks the entire fight. He should've chopped him down.

There was only one way for Fabio to have a chance and that was to stand and brawl with the guy, and that is exactly what Fedor did.

Maybe he is like Hendo. Hendo can't wrestle these days to save his life. The hips, the back, etc. won't seem to allow it. Maybe Fedor's hips, back, etc. are thrashed from a lifetime of Judo/Sambo. He use to have great trips, takedowns, and throws but doesn't even try anymore.

I'm a big Fedor supporter, but if this is the best he can do he should just hang it up before he starts getting killed. Yesterday's fight should've been a draw, but Fedor lucked out due to home advantage or just inexperienced judges who refuse to give 10-8 rounds.

In other news - Rumble is out of his fight with Glover. No report on why yet.

Cowboy looked great last night. I was surprised to see him outmuscle a guy like Cote so easily. He took him down with basically no resistance, and he hurt him several times. I kind of wish Cerrone would just forget about Khabib and Diaz and just start looking at top 10 guys at 170. Or, if he's really looking for a big payday (which is what it sounded like), start talking shit about McGregor again (or hell, even GSP, haha).

Conversely, that main event...that was just lackluster. I've seen people on Sherdog saying it was just a great tactical fight, but I just think they respected each other way too much and neither guy really looked comfortable. Things finally opened up a bit in the 4th round. But it just looked like one of those fights where neither fighter wanted to lead.

And MacDonald...I don't know. I just don't think he has what it takes to be a top guy. It's almost like he fights like he's not sure what his strengths are. He'll brawl with Lawler...but then he's timid and can't pull the trigger against Wonderboy. And at the post fight press conference, he was talking about getting surgery on his nose "so it won't break so easily". WTF? How about...stop getting hit in the face by elite strikers? Stop letting your opponent control the pace and distance of the fight.

But he's a free agent now...and I can't imagine the UFC is going to give him a great offer (though, maybe being a big draw in Canada could help him a bit). But he's really gotta figure out what the hell he's doing. He had so much potential when he was coming up and you'd see the clips of him training with GSP. Now, he's just looks dead inside.

Cerrone did look really good - I do wonder how he will do against some of the top 5 170's. Cote just seemed so much bigger and on the ground he was able to muscle Cerrone around a bit more than I expected. Not that Cote did much of anything, but Cerrone had to ride Cote more than just ground him and stifle him there.

Rory might just be feeling the effects of that beat down from Lawler. When he finally waded in during the 4th and 5th round he seemed to have more success. The weak nose must suck. He is just someone with a nose that shatters easily. It's like the guys who always seem to break a hand in fights. I think he is still a top guy. He has only lost to three people in the UFC - Lawler, Wonderboy and Carlos Conduit. He's beaten Diaz, Woodley, and Demian Maia. Woodley is fighting for a title next and Demian should get the shot after. As much as I love Lawler, he was 100% losing to Rory and his only hope was to pretty much stop Rory (which he did).

He may have just reached his peak where he will struggle against some top 5 guys and float around there.

GSP finally wants to fight again, but he wants to fight Bisping for the title. That is pretty underwhelming. Anything with Bisping is not a superfight (unless he is rematching Hendo). I'd want GSP to take on Robbie, Thompson, Hendricks rematch, or finally Silva. Bisping's title win was a perfect storm of Silva refusing to finish Bisping, Weidman getting injured, and Rockhold being a douche.

Roy Nelson is also calling out Brock. Saying it would be the biggest fight of all time. If Brock somehow wins why would he move down the rankings so hard to Nelson. Nelson's record is a who's who of the big stars, but he has lost to ever single one of them except for arthritic near-retirement Nog (which is a shame that Nog got laid out by Roy) and a hshell of his former self CroCop.

I had to pull up his record and includes losses to Barnett, Overeem, Hunt, Cormier, Stipe, Werdum, Frank Mir, JDS, Arlovski and Rothwell.

I'm a bit extra hard on Roy because he may be one of the biggest wastes of talent ever. If he just would train and get his weight under control he would be doing much better. He has no cardio, no wrestling, and can't figure out how to use his jiu-jitsu. Roy is a legit black belt in jiu-jitsu doing well in tournaments and beating guys like Frank Mir, Brandon Vera, etc., but then he went and gained about 80 lbs and can no longer move like he use to. In some of his old matches you an see him doing some good guard work and sweeping people. Roy is now a turtle on the ground. I also get annoyed because Roy said before he would drop down to LHW and get in shape, but he was just joking and is fatter than ever.

According to the little information ESPN posted in their blurb the test was done on June 16th. Why does it take almost 3 weeks to find this stuff out?

fuck Jones a million times over. He has the potential to be the greatest of all time, but is just squandering all his potential. At this point he should just go the freakshows over in Japan. He is pretty much one of those guys who you will talk about all the potential he had and how he threw it all away.

Fedor still gets to remain the goat for now I guess, and if Jones is out for 2 years he might as well hang it up. That would be like 4 years with one fight.

I am guessing the sample is unknown to the USADA tester and once it is flagged they send it back to the other party to find out who that person is, and than they notify the party in charge of handling things. I am pretty sure it also takes a few days or even weeks to test one sample for all the banned substance.

Sucks for Cromier though, that is one huge pay day he missed. Hopefully there is something in his contract where he still get paid.

Drug tests things always seem to take a long time. Have to go through proper channels and be sent out to whatever lab is doing them and processed from there. I use to work at Quest labs and from the point a sample gets in the door to where it actually had the results entered can be probably 10 days after it goes through all the different departments and is signed off on so many times.

Cormier lost out on some once in a lifetime money. That has to hurt.

Another bad thing about all of this is that it must bring a smile to McGregor's face. Even though his fight was stupid and made no sense, it would've happened. The smug is going to be suffocating.

Jones just had to go and fuck everything up again.  A lot of fighters already said that they would love to fight DC at short notice but it looks like Dana is just going to go ahead and make Lesnar and Hunt the main event. UFC 200 is still an insane card even with Jones out but man this hurts.

I hope other fighters learn their lessons and just keep it clean. It would break my heart if GSP's big comeback gets rekt'd like this.

NhRBQiY.png

Probably a nagging thought in the back of Dana's head about not having McGregor and Diaz fight now, although if you asked him he'd never admit it.

Feel REALLY bad for DC. This sucks. There's loose talk of Mousasi stepping in with basically zero prep time, or Bisping in a champ vs champ fight, but who knows. Just seems too soon for anything to get done.

Lesnar v Hunt is now the "main event."

Well, Mousasi is already on the card. So, it's not really zero prep time. He'd just not need to cut weight, and fight a bigger guy for a much bigger pay day.

I'm so tired of Jones' bullshit though. I was a huge fan of his...but I can't even process how a person could be this stupid. At this point, it's like he hates money. It would be really unfortunate if it turned out being a legitimately tainted supplement...or something dumb like Frank Mir kangaroo meat. But how can you not stop getting in your own way?

He just seems so out of his head at this point. The way he fights. The way he talks. He just seems so unnatural now. Like he's constantly thinking about how to be a legend. The self-awareness has ruined him. He's kind of the Alex Rodriguez of MMA now, haha.

Also, I saw this posted on Facebook this morning and it just made me think "Wow...not too many people who are currently relevant in this picture."

Honestly, I would love to see Lesnar vs DC. Lesnar would have a size advantage, but DC would be much more skilled. That's the biggest thing I hate about Lesnar's approach to MMA...and what he's even said in his recent interviews. He doesn't think he needs much training. Just being the biggest, strongest guy in the room is good enough for him. That's such garbage. He's going to try to brute force his way through Hunt just like he did for basically all of his wins. He's basically the spokesperson for neanderthal MMA.

Damn :whistle2:( . It should start at 4:10, if not start there
