Their position players need to get alot younger this offesason. They have a nice young core for their rotation. (Except for that horrible Zito contract) If they can improve their everyday lineup they could contend rather quickly.
 
there really isn't a lot of position players available for free agency (espically young)...I really don't see how teams can rebuild there core by the free agent market, unless you want a horrible contract like zitto, or what damon got from the yanks a couple years back. If they were to get a couple future key players, it would be someone that the fan base wouldn't think highly of, but blossoms in sf. Much like ortiz and bill mueller here in boston. Both were had by the sox on the cheap. No one thought anything about the ortiz signing, as he barely played in minn, and when he did he wasn't that good. He wasn't even the starting 1b, and mueller wasn't the starting 3b. We had the bad giambi, and shea hillanbrand at the corners
 
I'd say a #4 is definetly doable, a #3 is kinda iffy. However, except for CF, its a really shitty FA year so that will help.
 
my money is prospects...they got renteria and cash for marte, who really hasn't panned out in the majors. They got him for 2 years where he put up good numbers, I would think they would want young prospects for him. Renteria showed he wasn't that great of an AL batter (compared to his NL numbers), granted it was only 1 season in a tough city. There really isn't any major ss in there contract year, so the team that aquires him would be looking to improve on an already shitty ss, and they would need to have pieces the braves want.
 
Well, the Braves have Escobar ready to take a position, and it needs to be SS or 3B. Chipper still has a couple of good years left, so that's out. Renteria is simply expendable at this point.

It would be absolutely nuts to think of this prospect: Glavine comes back at one or two years, and Maddux declines his option in San Diego (he just missed escalating it up - 2 innings) and rejoins the crew.

So for one or two years, you have Smoltz, Hudson, Glavine, Maddux and . That would be absolutely crazy for the one or two years the Braves need to bring a few prospects along - Bennett, Reyes, Lerew.

Combine that with the very surprising play of Diaz in LF, and a Jones in CF still, and I really like our chances next year.

But, I'm sure that's all a pipe dream.

Hell while your at it see if you can get a year or two out of Dale Murphy and Bob Horner. It would be nice to see Smoltz, Maddux and Glavine together, but I doubt it.

dont doubt it. Glavine will be in a braves uni next year. Thats why he isnt sad. That sap is probably happy to go back to ATL. Let em. We dont need him!

well, i wasnt exactly talking to u, I was talkin to the guy who was on Bond's nuts, and then tried to be clever by insinuating that JRoll uses roids for hitting 50 in 2 years
 
Well, Glavine still makes his home here. What makes Maddux a bit more improbable is his home's in Vegas. The only way it would happen is if Smoltz and Glavine convince him.

I still think both would be invaluable assets to our record and our young pitchers down the line. Personally, I hope Maddux becomes our next pitching coach.
 
while i am sure it would be nice to bring the boys back to town...but all of them combined are not as good as they were 5 - 10 years ago...they would need more offense then they had back in there hey day for them to win. While they might win the nl east, I really don't think building a team around 3 old pitchers is the way to go. As for Hudson, he hasn't been remotely close to the effectiveness of a starter then he was with the a's. Does one team really need 4 veteran pitchers to help out develop the youngsters.

2B Kelly Johnson - .276/.375/.457 - 16/68 - better OBP than Reyes
SS Edgar Renteria - .332/.390/.470 - 12/57 - injured for a month or so
OR
SS Yunel Escobar - .326/.385/.451 - 5/28 - used sparingly
3B Chipper Jones - .337/.425/.604 - 29/102
1B Mark Teixiera - .306/.400/.563 - 30/105
C Brian McCann - .270/.320/.452 - 18/92
RF Jeff Francoeur - .293/.338/.444 - 19/105
CF Andruw Jones - .222/.311/.413 - 26/94 - ??
LF Matt Diaz - .338/.368/.497 - 12/45 - platooned half the year

Even with Andruw's abysmal average, you still have four players over .300 average. The offense wasn't a problem this year, save for a handful of games against top talent. Looking at the starters for this year, the Braves have the better numbers.

The pitching was the problem. The back three of our rotation rarely made it past the fifth inning. It was pathetic. Hudson had a good year: 16-10 3.33 ERA. He would have had 20 wins if not for the bullpen.
 
I am just saying a pitching staff of hudson, smoltz, glavine, and maddux does not scare me, like it did 5 or 10 years ago. Andrew jones will most likely be gone, mark teixiera allegedly is a very streaky hitter. We have had those hitters here in boston before, and when they are slumping it is really tough. Mcacanns numbers were down from last years. You list 2 players who werenn't regular, playing a full season could bring those numbers down.

Maddux will be 42 next season. His time previously in ATL, his era was as low as 1.56 and as high as 3.96. He had a 4.14 era this, pitching in a pitchers ballpark. Tom Glavine will be 42 next year, his era at 4.45 was right around the league avg. Smoltz had a good season considering he will be 40 next season, but his IP was down by about 25ip from the previous year. Considering hudson went to the weaker hitting NL, his numbers should be better then what it was in the AL. Adding 2 x 42 year old pitchers to the staff still isn't going to help your bullpen out at all.

The braves runs scored, ranked 9th in the league this year. Runs allowed, the braves ranked 10th. Seems like both the offense and defense were the problems for the team.
 
My boss was tellin me that he was at the mall yestarday right as the Phills game ended and there was a line coming outside and wrapping around the mall with people in line for Phillies stuff. Fair weather fans I suppose.

jroll never hit more than 15 in a season until the last 2 years when he hit 50. jroll is a skinny small dude, hes got to be on the juice. it might be speculation, but so is all the $#17 you circle jerkers talk about bonds who has NEVER tested positive for anything.
 
IMO, the majority of the players in mlb are or have taken some banned substance to improve there play. fucking wally joyner took it when he was with the braves. After his rookie year, he was not a home run hitting player, he took it to bounce back and add some power to his slowing bat speed.

Looked like he smacked his chin a bit too hard. From the angles, it was really hard to tell if he did or didn't touch the plate. Suprised they never showed an overhead view. Its going to be controversial, thats for sure.

if you watch on the back side view you can see a dirt mark right along the plate witch to me means his hand was right there, and in a sport where you don't even have to touch the bag for a double play I think that is enough evidence.

They need A-rod to improve, I honestly don't think they got it in them to win the world series, They can win a series against any of the other NL teams, but when it comes down to beating the yankees or bo sox in a series they may be in trouble.

Edit: What a crazy way to end that game. you cant put the full blame on that call. You can blame Hoffman for getting blown up. He has a problem with pressure situations...wonder how much love San Diego Fans are gonna give him......Thats a heart breaker.

I dont even want to think about how the mets completed this collapse. its nothing like the yanks but this team played ill inspiring baseball. I really hope management chucks mota and shoenweiss. I cant stand those two.

He was out by about 10 miles but it all works out because the Rockies had a homer taken away earlier.

Well, that's why you're supposed to go feet first when going into home. There was very little contact with Barret (really, it seemed like he just hit his foot on the slide), and he still couldn't get a hold of the ball. So if it was a foot-first slide with more contact, it would have been for sure a score.

I went to a couple, went to the crazy day game they came back against Wagner in the 9th. The Phanatic also constantly thrusts himself towards children as well. Plus there is a funnier clip where Mr. Met finds the Phanatic in bed with Mrs. Met. Not on youtube yet though

Interesting post-season...and a controversial finish to the Rockies/Padres game

I'm hoping the Angels (yea I live in LA/OC area) and Cubs (who cares about the superstitious bullcrap) in the World Series...

I'm tired of seeing the Red Sox and Yankees in the post season...it's so boring IMO to see them every year.

Also, I think the playoff bracket isn't deserving like other sports...only 8 teams (4 from each league) can make it.

I think they should do something like the NFL...have the top two teams from each league get a bye in the first round while the other 8 teams duke it out in a best of 3 series, then the usual LDS, LCS, and World Series.

But it's my own imagination, I know Bud Selig is old school and won't let that happen for a long time now...
 
if the giants dont sign arod they better get AJ, the guy is a beast. next year he will bounce back for sure just like helton did this year. maybe the giants can offer him a frank thomas-oakland a's type of contract.
