Man, TG-16 did not starve for shooters, did it?
TG16 was feast or famine, and schmups are definitely the former category. It had a handful of solid titles in other genres (platform and Action RPG), but I emphasize the *handful* part; moreover, its sports franchises were miserable, and the lack of third-party support in the US did irreparable harm to them.

Very reminiscent of the Dreamcast, actually (save for the sports franchises).

I'm not familiar with any of those games released today...oh well, guess I'll wait another week.

Does anybody know if the Wii has built-in emulators for the systems supported under VC, or if each game is given some sort of "wrapper" code so that the Wii can read the ROMs?

Definitely surprising no more N64 games yet. Again, clearly strategic, though it's not obvious why they are choosing the strategy (other than they think it will ultimately maximize sales).

I don't want to be one of those fanboys, but I wish Nintendo would release at least one of its own games each week. Even if it wasn't great (Baseball, Tennis), it would just be nice to build that catalog that I recognize so well.

I read a blog post or article a little while ago that said it is not clear. At first, everybody understood it as emulators with ROMs, but is it possible to have a little of both?

Sheesh, three games? This is really getting annoying. I love shooters, but come on...

I know right now we have five on the VC, but I haven't bought one of them yet (I might but...). Next week we are probably getting golf and DK Jr Math because nintendo doesn't give a fuck about the VC (I am only asking for ONE good VC game from Nintendo this month besides super mario bros since I own a copy for my gbc), but well after these two weeks yeah.

There are five shooters? Shmups? Or do you mean anything that shoots (Gunstar)?

I agree though. I'm fine with VC game trickle and spreading releases out. But 3 games out of libraries of 5 systems, is not trickle. It's called not giving a damn.

What the hell is everyone bitching about? I remember from a long time game Nintendo promised 1 - 4 games every week, we should be lucky we're getting a higher number (3) as opposed to just 1.

I for one am glad the TG - 16 is getting some love because I never owned one. All I want to see now is Rondo Of Blood and Lords of Thunder.

Maybe I'm in the minority but I'm glad they are building up a good library on a console that isn't common.

Yeah and where is Dungeon Explorer, I checked the VC and it was not there (I am hearing good things about this game I might want to try it).

Oh yea, I forgot about Gradius and R-Type. I was going to go for a Soldier Blade / CVIV combo, but if I buy $10 worth of points I am 100 short of the 1400 mark. Damn point system.

It's all a matter of perception, to me, the VC has been cranking out at least one "gotta get it" game per week. And at least we get more than one game a week, which is more than the XBLA and PS Store.

Sometimes, XBLA dosen't even get a game.

It's just funny to see all the bitching when, you're right, XBLA gets one game a week and 80% of the time it's not even that good. Nintendo could be handling the VC ALOT worse.

Do you guys really have enough money/time to spend on more than one or two VC games a month anyway? Between actual releases and these, we're more than busy enough. If you've already bought and played through Zelda, Elebits, Red Steel, Excite Truck, Madden, Trauma Center, AND all the VC games worth buying, you've got more problems than that there aren't enough VC releases.

I had one a long time ago but i fried it, it's nice being able to play bonk and r-type again.

I hope nintendo adds classic game boy games in the future, for cheap, very cheap.

All I want is Castlevania: Rondo of Blood.. it was Japan only but Konami and IGA has always expressed an interest in bringing it over here, but they never knew how. This is their golden opp. All it would require is some minimal translation, just leave the VA's in Japanese.

Plus Lords of Thunder but I don't think Turbo CD is part of the TG 16 package on the VC.

Gradius! Great! Alliteration is for people with no imagination!

Freakin' cool. I love shmups, they're great time killers, even if they're hard as hell.

Oh, and for those that don't know, didn't know, or care to know, Gradius is historically significant because it was the first game to feature UUDDLRLRBAStart. Otherwise known as the Konami Code.

Could be a lot worse isn't a great standard in my opinion. Really, I haven't complained much about the VC, and I still find that it's been great to use. There's definitely room for improvement, though, and I hope that they don't play low to match Microsoft but instead proactively take charge.

Hey, we're all voting with our wallets, but it's nice to discuss our impressions with other videogame fans out there...

In my opinion, they are already proactively taking charge... Microsoft set the standard by doing one release per week, and hell sometimes they don't even do that.

Nintendo is offering 1 - 4 games every Monday guaranteed... that's taking charge to me. Sure, the games may not be what everyone wants, but they are still off to a great start.

The problem is that ever since the ESRB list got leaked, people get their hopes up every Monday until one of those games shows up, and, if it dosen't, they complain. I like knowing what's in the pipeline too but I'm also glad for the stuff they do put out.

Once I find a Wii, I'm getting a good majority of these TG 16 games since it's the one system I never got.

So guys what do you guys reccomend as a schump for the VC. I have it down to r-type and soldier blade. I am more towards soldier blade because it is 200 wii points less, and I want to spend my damn points on something, but if r-type is better I could care less because I have 2400 and plan to get 2000 more on thursday.

Depends on if you want a vertical or horizontal shmup.

Can't go wrong with either.

I'm skipping the middle three since, well, anyone smart will go buy the Sega Collection for $20 to have these games in 480p already, but Streets of Rage? I'm totally there.

And how can you not hear of Streets of Rage? Do you live in a cave? =/

I can see why Sega is doing the stuff already one the Genesis Collection though since it's already done.

Just waiting for them to do Shining Force 1 and 2 at this point...

Botticus also missed this... these are apparently coming THIS MONTH:

"The Wii Shop Channel is a great avenue for gamers who want instant access to classic SEGA Genesis titles," said Scott A. Steinberg, Vice President of Marketing, SEGA of America, Inc. "Legendary titles such as Streets of Rage, Comic Zone and Bonanza Bros. are a perfect fit for this platform and will be ready for download later this month

First of all, let's separate out quantity and quality. I don't care if Nintendo releases four games, if they're all poor to mediocre quality. This week isn't an example of that, but last week (Urban Champion, Baseball) was.

Secondly, let's separate out Nintendo's and Microsoft's catalogs. Nintendo has a rich enough profile to be able to release more than Microsoft. These games are already coded, and it's just a matter of prepping them for the VC, which I'm sure is pretty trivial at this point.

You may just have different expectations, but taking charge would be what's happening in Japan. Here we're getting a slow trickle that is making people more careful and cautious with their purchases. I suspect a good amount of Wii owners (including me) would have made lots and lots of purchases with a more substantial list and even let the excitement trickle down to purchasing lesser games just to give them a try. That's what these old-school games invite, right? You don't have to buy a couple and play them all the way through. You buy a bunch and just switch betwene them playing a level at a time and enjoying the nostalgia.

Considering I have heard of the majority of XBLA offerings, I think most of those are already coded as well - and with the announcement of Gauntlet II and a couple other gems for the Playstation Store, the same seems to apply there.

Sega just sent out a press release concerning Q1 titles available on the VC.
Via Go Nintendo

SAN FRANCISCO & LONDON (January 8, 2007) - SEGA® of America, Inc. and SEGA Europe Ltd. today announced five titles from its SEGA Genesis™ library, Streets of Rage, Bio-Hazard Battle, Gain Ground, Comix Zone and Bonanza Bros. will soon be available on the Wii™ Shop Channel for download and play on the Wii’s Virtual Console. Prices start at 800 Wii Points for SEGA Genesis titles.

Of course, and you could say the same for Symphony of the Night whenever that comes out. But there are more originally coded games on XBLA because Microsoft doesn't have such an extensive catalog. Do you really not think that Nintendo has a huge advantage with what's in their chest?

By the way, what are the legality issues with emulating another's system? Some notable XBLA releases are arcade versions (SF II), and obviously Playstation games were on Sony's own system. But can Microsoft simply emulate the SNES to put on Super Castlevania IV, a case where Konami would seemingly have no problem because they are already working with XBLA.

Comix Zone... I think that one was some sort of a take off on brawlers but with super heroes and it took place inside of a "comic book" so you had to travel between panels.

Bonanza Bros. sounds familiar, but I can't place it.

When are we getting Sonic 2? I like #1 and all, but I liked #2 a LOT more.

Also, Splatterhouse and Rondo of Blood. Not commenting on those, just saying the name of the two, since it's on every page of this thread at least once.

Q1 for Streets of Rage? Looks like I'm going to save whats left of my Wii Points for that.

I would get Gradius, but TRU has the Gradius Collection for PSP for only $9.98

Comix Zone was fun as well, I might consider that.
I'm pretty sure you have a PS2... just get Sega Genesis Collection for 20, it has 28 Genesis games all in Progressive Scan, Comix Zone being one of them.

Comix Zone really isn't even that good. The graphics are pretty good, but the game itself is difficult beyond reason, and it takes away from most of the fun.

I skipped about 45 pages of this thread cuz...well...I'm not up to it:drool:

How do these VC games look on the Wii? Any better than on the actual console it was on???

Although emu's on the comp pretty much wipe out any use for these games on the wii, I'm still curious.

A couple games I'd like to see on the list though is Double Dragon II, Illusion of Gaia, Goonies II, Guardian Legend, Super Mario Bros. 3, and Bionic Commando.

Good times...

BTW, this should be a sticky thread >.>

I need some more Points!

-Gradius (NES 500pts) maybe not since I have the collection on PSP
-Soldier Blade (TG16-600pts) YES
-Dungeon Explorer (TG16-600 pts) YES

Plus Streets of Rage! Coming Soon!

I have so far Purchased
Gunstar Heroes
R-Type
Star Solider
Bonk
Castlevania

Each purchase has been totally worth it IMHO.
The problem I have is I only have 400 left over points and I can't use them for anything. I wish you could just buy 100 points!

Has anyone downloaded Space Harrier II I would like to get some opinions on it. I loved the game as a kid but I dont really think it is worth the 800 points.
The games look better if you have a 480p compatiable TV, since the games run in progressive scan.

What an eclectic selection -- combined with confusion over 2 out of 3 releases being shmups, and 2 out of 3 being Turbo games. I owned a Turbo back in the day and still never heard of Soldier Blade. I guess it's good they're not doing things totally chronologically, but it's weird that Blazing Lazers wouldn't come first. I also never played Dungeon Explorer, though it was for rent at my local video store back then.

Stupid question, kind of, but are there any slowdown/flickering issues over VC that plagued the original games on their original systems?

There is on Castlevania IV, but it's been so long since I played the game I don't know if it's "classic" or "modern" slowdown. I'd like to think it's the former.

Yay Biohazard Battle. Too bad I already own it, and will only buy VC titles I don't own. But, I do appreciate that its there, er, will be.

EDIT:
Dungeon Explorer worth it?

I wanna hear how Dungeon Explorer is as well. I need some good 2 player co-op games besides Gunstar Heroes. :)
