Most loved by you, but never heard of by others
OMG! I love those River City Ransom sports games! The dodge ball one was called Super Dodgeball and it totally hooked me back in the day. Man, back in the day I thought that shit was REAL. Anyways, World Cup was badass too, and my version came as two games in one cartridge. The other game was Super Spike V-Ball. That game was very fun as well, but didn't have the RCR graphics. World Cup is a big reason why I want to pick up Super Mario Strikers. If it's anywhere near as fun, I can't wait. Yay for backflip kicks that make your ball all blinky and powerful.
You should try the Hockey and Basketball RCR sports games.

I loved rocket jockey! Tried reinstalling it recently but its so damn old it requires direct x 1.

Great thread!

Spanky's Quest - SNES
First off, the game is about a monkey named Spanky. I wouldn't have been surprised to a character with that name in Conker's Bad Fur Day, but not here. Whoever came up with that couldn't have been so naive, right?
Anyways, the game is somewhat similar to Bubble Bobble. One day, Spanky was walking out in the woods when all of a sudden, bricks started falling all around him. He discovers that he is trapped in a giant tower. The tower has five floors, and each floor has 11 rooms (not counting the hidden bonus rooms). In each room, you have to get the number of keys required to open the door for the next room, and you'll usually have to fight off various fruit enemies. You do this by launching a bubble and balancing it on your head. When you're ready, you pop the bubble to launch the attack. The more you balance the bubble, the bigger it gets, allowing you to do a more devastating attack. You can also use the bubble to reach out of the way items and power-ups. There are also various hats you can wear that vary from allowing you to float to giving you more footspeed.

On The Ball - SNES
In this game, you guide a marble to the end of a maze - but instead of controlling the marble, you control the maze. You tilt the maze to manipulate the ball.

4x4 Evo - DC, PS2
4x4 Evo 2 - GCN, Xbox
These are as close as anyone has gotten to a truck version of Gran Turismo. These were two of the best off-road racing games ever created. There's a huge selection of trucks and SUVs to choose from, and lots of upgrades. And the courses are HUGE. I had a lot of fun just exploring them. 4x4 Evo 2 featured a mission mode and the Gamecube version has some exclusive trucks and tracks.

Fire Shark - Genesis
An excellent vertical shmup developed by Toaplan, with awesome power-ups.

Virtual Pinball - Genesis
Features the ability to create and save your own pinball tables. One of the better EA-published titles on the Genny.

Giant Gram 2000 (Japan import, Dreamcast). Half Virtua Fighter, half Smackdown. The BEST PLAY-BY-PLAY COMMENTARY OF ANY GAME EVER. How good is it? So good that it doesn't matter it's in Japanese. You get credit for building up a match to a peak and then polishing off a guy with one of your finishing moves. As you build towards the final move, the Japanese announcer keeps getting more excited, and is absolutely going APESHIT as you finish him off and cover him for a pin (think "GOAAAALLLLL" but times 10). You will never find that experience in any other sports (or sports-related) game. Ever.

Yeah, I realize that thing I just described sounds like some orgy. Oh well.

Yeah, I realize that thing I just described almost sounds like a porn film. Oh well.

Below the Root - Apple IIe
i've clocked so many hours on that game, and never beat it.

Soukaigi - PS1
Probably THE best Squaresoft game. Just a great game from start to finish.

I used to play base wars with my brother all the time! It was awesome because it didn't matter how good you were at the baseball part if you could combat well.

Little Brother: You're out
Me: My tank wheels say I'm safe
Base Wars was always pretty cool. I don't think I knew anyone else other than one or two people as a kid that even played it
*GASP* They made RCR Hockey and Basketball??? Can you give me the titles so I can d/l roms? I will kick myself if I already have them in a rom pack and didn't play them!

You should try the Hockey and Basketball RCR sports games.

Sorry for the additional post, but I really have to second this one!
bucky o'hare NES
Mario's Picross (GB) - awesome puzzle-type game

King's Bounty (Gen) - first tactical RPG I ever played

Everblue 2 (PS2) - the best first-person deep-sea salvage game EVAR!

Gallop Racer 2003 (PS2) - kicks GT 4's ass in my opinion

System Shock 2 (PC) - precursor to Deus Ex, but scarier

Neutopia (TG-16) - great Zelda rip-off

Shadow of the Ninja (NES) - This game is among the best action/platformers on the NES, with some of the best movement and animation seen on the console. The character moves very fluidly, and the gameplay is very fast and fun. Seems like a pretty unknown game to me.

Raystorm (PSX) - This is a very, very underrated scrolling shooter. It wasn't the most original shooter of the time, but it was flashy and a complete blast (no pun intended) to play. This game is very, very tough to find though, but should be cheap (I got mine for $6 at gamestop).

Jurrasic Park (SNES) - I know that when you think of games that are unknown, a movie liscensed game usually doesn't come to mind, but I do think Jurrasic Park isn't a very widely known game. The game plays from an overhead perspective, unlike the terrible Genesis counterpart, and plays out almost like a Zelda game, with different weapons and puzzles to solve in the dangerous Jurrasic Park world. The game even had some early first person shooting action in the incubation rooms.

Eternal Ring (PS2) - Eternal Ring played like a King's Field game, where you're in a first person perspective throughout the game. The combat was fun I thought, the story was random (which made it kind of cool), the music brings back nostalgic memories of the 16-bit days, and it was just a blast to play with crafting magic rings and exploring the island and all. Unfortunately, the game sold like dog shit, and can still be found pretty much anywhere new for $10 or less (that's a good thing).
I'll post more later.

Gargoyle's Quest on the Game Boy

Out of this World on the SNES

The Magic of the Scheherazade on the NES

Soldiers of Fortune: The Chaos Engine by the Bitmap Brothers for various systems. It's an overhead shooter with a great soundtrack, and is just loads to play. Unfortunately, it seems that I'm the only one to have played it.

And being "loads to play" is a good thing? Looks a little like Gain Ground to me from the SNES screens on Allgame.com. I liked Gain Ground.
Jurrasic Park (SNES)
That's a pretty good game, although it's a shame that it doesn't have a save feature, or even a password feature.
Seconded... didn't get very far but the graphics were good and the beats were pretty sick.
I played it when it was the only rpg around for the ps1.., to me it was only ok at best, but glad it has some love.

For myself,

Warsong - Sega Genesis

Hmmm I'd have to say Illbleed is unknown and underrated and has one of the BEST lines ever in it, movie or game, when you hear it, it's like "WTF?!".
I'm not giving it away either, it's in the Giant Worm stage. Granted Illbleed has problems but a Camp video game earns stars from me.
"The Home Run Of Death", chuckles.
I second Burning Rangers as well. Actually Rei it didn't sell well in Japan though I'd LOVE to see it remade.
What else? Oh yeah "Lunacy" is EXCELLENT. Exclusive game on Saturn like Myst but totally polygon.
Also "Shadow Of Destiny" aka Shadow Of Memories is good and I wish Konami would make another adventure game. I bought the Japanese version figuring it would have Japanese voices with English subs. No luck. :whistle2:(

For the SNES:
- Zombies Ate My Neighbors
- Aerobiz Supersonic

For the PS1:
- I can't remember the name of it, but you were a tank and could summon troops/tanks/planes/bombers

My cousin and I burned up countless hours playing Pigskin Footbrawl on the Genesis. It was the football answer to Arch Rivals.
I can still hear the chant of "Troll,Troll,Troll !"

And +1's for Gladius and North & South.

I think I am going to kinda break the console-friendly flow of this entire thread, but... Here is my list consisting of a whooping 7 games.

1.
a) Little Big Adventure 1 / Relentless: Twinsen's Adventure
b) Little Big Adventure 2 / Twinsen's Odyssey

I will take either one of them over Diablo any day. And if you haven't played them, you're missing out on one of the best isometric "adventure RPG" (you level up with items, and you have no stats to speak of).

2. Freddy Pharkas: Frontier Pharmacist

Without a doubt the best game Al Lowe has made. I adore the Leisure Suit Larry games, but this one takes the cake. It's one of the few games that Sierra has done that contained some weird-ass time-based puzzles, and was also the only adventure game _I_ know of to be set in the old west. Seek this one, it's worth every minute.

3. Zak McKracken and the Alien Mindbenders

It saddens me to see that Maniac Mansion, Loom, and Sam'n'Max titles are always mentioned as something magical and amazing, uttered by the fans that remind me (mostly) of Tool fans... They are people who think they 'get' something others don't, because they've played Loom and others have not. But Zak McKracken gets mentioned almost never, unless you're in Europe... It is argued that the reason for it's European fandomship is the presence of NOSE AND MUSTACHE GLASSES in the game, which, as you already know, is the most favorite toy #1 in Europe [citation needed].

4. Darkwing Duck (NES)

The bosses were obscene in this game. They were hard, and the controls were not very fun. Despite that, the fact that every level began with the one and only protagonist falling onto the stage FROM THE SKIES while proudly proclaiming I AM DARKWING DUCK! (complete with the exclamation sign) made it a worthwhile endeavor. Having said that I love it, it is only the only game so far in the list that I have not managed to beat, because the last boss appears to have some sort of a mechanical masturbation device, which is as deadly as it is addictive.

5. Broken Sword: Shadow of the Templars

I feel sorry for every person who doesn't know what this game is. It's so good, I won't even write anything about it. Except that I love it with every molecule that comprises my body and possibly soul.

6. Psychonauts

I bought that game 7 times so far, and I still do not own it. After playing my friends' copy, I've been buying it for every friend that have not heard of it, sometimes compulsively. The genius of this game is unquestionable, and if you don't like it, I'd appreciate knowing that, so I can know how many of you have sold your motherloving soul.

7. Heart of Darkness

I liked Eric Chachi ever since he made Another World / Out of this World (depending on where in the world you live). When Flashback came out, I was hoping it was his, but I thought "damn, this is like Prince of Persia, but not as good as PoP2..." Well, Chachi went on to make a truly epic ass-kicking side-scroller known as Heart of Darkness. I never owned the game, and I do not know where you can find it now, but I've beaten it in California, while my parents took me to some guy's house when I was 14 or 15. Not only was the game GORGEOUS, but it kicked so much ass, that even Maddox would have to commend the lead protagonist of the game (an 8 year old) for being the ultimate master of bad-assery with a. lightning gun and b. green alien life force a.k.a. MAGIC.

That's it for me.

I still have a copy of Heart of Darkness for ps1

Yet you never played Loom.

The countdown to being disowned as a friend is ticking... my friend.

I would also like to add Deception series from PS1 to the list.
Nothing like a sadistic game of home alone where you fling people into pits of fire, electric chairs, and crusing boulders.

Just to add to my list, I thought the PS2 game, Eternal Ring should get some mention. Eternal Ring is among my favorite PS2 launch titles (actually, it is, though that's not saying much).

Eternal Ring played much like a King's Field game, where you're in a first person perspective throughout the game. The combat was fun I thought, the story was random (which made it kind of cool), the music brings back nostalgic memories of the 8-bit days, and it was just a blast to play with crafting magic rings and exploring the island and all. Future Cop: LAPD's (PS1) multiplayer is better than sex.

It was all in the concept. Tight execution, but the concept was extremely fun and unique. If there were a next-gen update, or even remake (over LIVE), I'd quit my job and school just to have more Future Cop time.

Or, hell, just port it to Marketplace with LIVE multiplayer. I'd kill a man infront of his own mother for it.

After reading all the replys, here are some that I feel should be mentioned:

Metalstorm (NES) - If you haven't played this, you need to. It's one of the best NES games period. It's a great side scroller that was pretty innovative for it's time

Addams Family (NES) & Who Framed Roger Rabbit (NES) - Two licensed games for the NES that were actually a lot of fun to play, Roger Rabbit especially.

Tomba (PS1) - I know a lot of people know of Tomba, but it's so great I have to mention it. I remember the advertisements for this game turned me off completely, but then I played a demo of it and fell in love.

Legaia 2: Duel Saga (PS2) - Nothing particularly special about this game except that it did what a sequel should do and that is not mess with something that isn't broken. The story sucked, but the combat was where it was at, and it was almost exactly like its predecessor.

Herc's Adventures(PSX)- A fucking FANTASTIC action RPG that had a great co-op mode and tons of humor. Mythological setting with Gyros for health? Sign me up.

Psychonauts- Fantastically creative platformer. Do yourselves a favor, pry out $20, and buy it.

The Mask (SNES)- This was a fun-ass sidescroller. You should pick it up since it's all of, what, $3?

Shadowman(n64)- Fun game with great atmosphere and an entertaining story, with a surprising amount of voicework for a cart. A little repetitive and confusing at times, however.

Ghost Hunter(Ps2)- A fun 3d person shooter that has great settings, voicework, and a likeable main character (Lazarus Jones)

Beyond Good and Evil(GC)- Great narrative, setting, and interesting gameplay. Get it.

Haunting Ground(PS2) Like clocktower, but more disturbing to me due to the intensely sexual overtones. Great atmosphere and an interesting gamepllay mechanic (your dog, Huey) make it agreat pickup. It's kind of rare though, but I think it's part of the CC sale.

I'll post more if I think of them.

Daniella, the maid, creeped me out so much in the game. Her smile was insanely scary. Remember that scene where Fiona looks through the keyhole, and that guy is smacking the crap out of Daniella. Then she looks straight at Fiona and smiles that bloody smile *shudders* And that music that would play when she would chase you, and Rei forbid she should actually catch you. That laugh... *cries*

I always found the most disturbing part to be where Debillas (spelling?) would take you down, and at the GAME OVER screen you could hear squishing and him moaning. Rape upsets me to an unusual degree, even when portrayed in games/movies.

Future Cop was incredible. One of the very few PC games I was willing to pay full price for back in the day.

Damn. I've never been caught by him, so I didn't even know about that. Ugh, glad I wasn't now.

I always wanted Herc's Adventures. I played a demo way back when and loved it. I just never got around to actually buying it, and I missed the boat. It's a damn hard game to find.

And yes, Metal Storm and Future Cop are fantastic games.

Winback: Covert Operations.

The game came before Metal Gear Solid, was better than Metal Gear Solid, holds up better than Metal Gear Solid, and I have been on the last level for over 2 years.

God DAMMIT.

Mmmmm, mortar bombing a crowd of prisoners..... *drools*

Future Cop was indeed amazing.

Tomba! 2 is great in addition to Tomba!, both games are severely underrated.

I always like Drakkhen, even if I never understood what the fuck was going on and couldn't figure out where to go. My characters died out of nowhere, the castles were intensly confusing, and salesmen appeared out of nowhere and sold me stuff for hugely inflated prices.

It sort of played out like an MMORPG before the concept ever existed, what with the first person view and all.

I like it, and I want to go back and actually attempt to beat it, but goddamn is it hard. I do know once, when I rented it, some guy had totally hardass guys at the very end of the game, and I beat it using his characters, and it CLEARLY said a sequel was coming.

...

I also liked Deadly Towers. If you try hard enough, you can get very far in it - burning the bells and travelling up the towers and such - but it's still hard as hell. I need to find an invincibility code and emulator-rape it one night.

Yea, but it wasn't completely the same. Didn't have a party, used the side view, whateva.

But you're right, I ought to check it out.

Winback was for the PS2 and was released in 1999, whereas Metal Gear Solid was originally released in 1998 foir PS1 (according to wikipedia). I also enjoyed the game quite a bit. It had a really cool arcade feel to it, kinda like if Time Crisis were a platformer. I do remember it having horrible voice acting, though, and that was at a time when I was less sensitive to such things. Anyway, I don't want to sound like I am bashing you. I do really like Winback; I just wanted to clarify that MGS came first.
