From now until further notice all preplayed PS2,XBOX and GC titles are 3.99. From the Movie Gallery store I work at I picked up 2 copies of Mercenaries 2 and Guitar Hero 3.

Also if your Movie Gallery has a Game Zone all preplayed Wii, 360 and PS3 games are 25% off. Most of the next gen games that are preplayed in the Game Zone sections come as trade-ins so you can generally find good copies its just that the selection wont be as good as a Gamestop.

Edit by Io - For those with Hollywood Videos around note that this sale applies only to stores that DO NOT have Gamecrazy's attached. Also, it is still highly YMMV at any given store. Some don't participate (manager's discretion) and some are just clueless and think you are talking about the concurrent $3.99 movie deal (which requires 2 rentals and only applies to movies $12.99 and under). I've gone to about 6 stores and have gotten about 4 different versions of the deal. There is a code they can scan that makes all these games come out to $3.99 no matter whether you rent or not and no matter what the original prices are - it is just YMMV whether they can A) Find that code and B) Choose to apply it to the games you want to buy ;).
Personally, I'm pretty bummed about it.

It's been a good run, though...
turning less than $200 into over $600 is pretty awesome... i'm sad to see it end, but at least i'm not going to HWV every five days like a giant nerd

Well some have had problems with HWV, but my prob was with GS.

I picked up

PS2
Family Guy
Futurama
Lego SW II
Star Wars Battlefront 2

XB
Star Wars Battlefront 2

I figured (based on TIV info posted at CAG) that I would get about $43 for the games, plus the 30% promo for 5 games plus 10% for my Edge card.

So I could rack up to $61 or so.

I even tried all the games on my PS2 and XB at home but decided to flip them for creds at GS.

I get there and they say "Oh, some of these will need to be resurfaced due to scratches - though it should only be a buck off".

Then when he enters in the info, it turns out that the resurfacing costs will be $3 for Lego SW II, and $4 each for Futurama and Xbox SW Battlefront 2 (basically the higher priced games) so I lost $10 plus tax (which effectively erased their 30% promo!)

Sheesh!

Oh well, I netted $49 for a $20 investment - not the greatest but I did not have the greatest games other than Futurama which was $17+ TIV after all the promos less $4 resurfacing so it dropped it back to a mere $13 from the $12.25 initial TIV.

Live and learn!

Wish I had had the time to ask for all the disks to be resurfaced at HWV, but it was all being done on 1/3/09.

Thanks to CAG for the heads up though!
Damn Hollywood Video has terrible service.
The guy who sold me a bulk load of games (~18) told me I can return them in 30 days if there were any problems even after buffing all of them for free. Three of which were unreadable, so naturally I go back to the store to return them. Upon walking in I immediately begin beeping and an employee comes over and starts acting hectic and says "Why are you beeping, ok you're beeping, what what what"
Then he tells me I can return the games only for store credit, and prompts me out of the door while putting my games in a bag. He tells me the manager will be there at 5 o' clock if I want to wait around (it's currently 2:30 and I have better things to do than waiting around for a HWV manager..). He also claims the original guy I bought from was new and didn't understand.
I walk out about to go to a coffee shop, and then turn around in deciding I'd rather take store credit. Then this guy tells me I can't return and still have to wait for the manager. He starts blaming my systems (GC & PS2) and says after 2 years or so they start wearing down. I tell him he can't fucking honestly (minus the expletive) blame both of my systems when they play other discs, INCLUDING THE ONES I BOUGHT AT THIS HWV, work perfectly. Gives me the managers card, I walk out disgusted.
I call the Manager and explain the situation. Guy says I can't do anything nastily and I tell him he lost a customer. He also said the employee who originally sold to me was not brand new and there must have been a misunderstanding. He doesn't sound sorry and I have to go back if I want good GS flipping, but hey I hope I got it in his mind to treat his customers with respect.
All in all I'm not impressed with this HWV, but I have to back if I want to flip for profit as it is the only HWV near me.
=/
Yea, some employees just stop after saying they have a 90 day return policy or they go into more detail about return for credit only or an exchange... depending on what you purchased, you might as well flip the games at GS.

Gamestop's resurfacing fees are stupid because if you buy a scratched up used game from them and then try to trade it in you will be hit with a resurfacing fee.

i was able to avoid one massive resurface fee (marvel vs. capcom 2) by saying "dude, i've bought games from this store very recently that were in way worse condition than this." The guy said "i don't doubt it" and took it off.

All of the stores by me supposedly were throwing(literally THROWING) the games that had to be refurbed/resurfaced into a big box that they were supposedly going to ship them out to the resurfacing center in.

However, my theory on this is that GS pays to have it shipped to a distribution center where the games are redistributed back to other stores, since I STILL see games at the GS stores that look like someone took sandpaper to them to try and clean them.
Depends. Are we talking for flipping or for keeping?

of course

Checked at a HMV today, and it is still going on. This one received a shipment of games and is not renting anymore Xbox or GC games. Picked up a Ninja Gaiden Black, Pirates, Fire Emblem and Silent Hill 2. I'm keeping the Silent Hill 2 and am going to trade in the Pirates and NGB since I already have those. I also plan on trading in the Fire Emblem since I hate turn-based RPGs. If anyone wants them, let me know!

Well today was the last day of the sale at my two stores. I grabbed the last Futurama, Silent Hill 4, Eternal Darkness, and Fire Emblem at the last minute. Great finds!

Don't know when it ends, but when I went to my store, I found Kirby's Air Ride and a copy of Twilight Princess FOR RENT.

Wow... I was mad. I've been searching for twilight princess forever and when I brought them up the guy said, "Well these are for rent only..." I said "what? are you sure?" and he replied "I believe I work here, so yes i'm sure"

when do they stop renting them?!

So with this sale finally ending does that mean people won't have a place to log their daily Hollywood Video finds?

THANK F'N GOD!! Like this section is their friggin' video game livejournal or some such...

im heading down to hwv tomorrow...we shall see if this sale is TRULY over or not...mineaswell check my MG too

and where the hell is capa? i haven't seen him post in this thread in a long time...maybe he went cross the U.S. to every HWV and hasn't returned yet?

This was by far the best deal of the year for me. I pretty much turned about $150 in cash or trade ins to HWV into at least $600 in credit/games/systems/GCs/VVs/etc. (I actually lost track).

I hit up both stores by me on Tuesday and they didn't have anything new whatsoever. I might hit it up one last time today to see if there's anything new out but I doubt it.

Damn, it's sad to see this one go.

Thanks primarily to this sale I got a backup 360 and a 80GB BC PS3 from Gamestop, plus I still have credit left over.

Pour out a little liquor...

I think this probably will stay in their system for a long time, but it's up to the stores if they want to let you use it by saying "it's over"

Agreed. I got a bunch of credit left over. Big thanks to the OP and I'm set on buying games for a while. Unless the 30% comes back for PS2 and GC games, I don't need to go back to a HWV to see if it's still going on. 40% extra was nice. I'd also like to thank the people over at SD for their thread not even getting off the ground. Few people reported it but sounds like nobody did as much flipping as here. Too much effort for them, I guess, to keep going back and forth or traveling to multiple cities and/or states. This deal is going to be hard to beat. It has definitely made up for any deal that has been sold out before I jumped on board.

yeah, i heard it is bogo on their games now. good luck finding someone who wants to buy a used copy of wall-e for 34.99 and then get another game for free. i think i bought about 800 games during the course of the sale.

I just yesterday stopped at a local Hollywood Video and it is now in fact Buy One Get One Free on their used video game selection ($14.99 or less). It seems to have removed the restriction of it being last generation consoles, but at the same time, I think most can agree it's nowhere near as great a deal as the $3.99 for all used PS2, GC, XBOX games. I did see a couple things that would actually strike me as a decent deal, most notably getting a copy of Kameo: Elements of Power (360) and Star Wars Lego 2: The Original Trilogy (360) for $14.99 + tax. (B1G1). But I do believe most the potential for flips to Game Stop or similar is pretty gone now. I did manage to get some great games at discount while the promotion lasted, and towards the end I did flip some games to Game Stop right before the Tiered Trade-In Bonus deal ended. Hopefully it returns again someday, but am doubtful it'll happen too soon.

Notable Pick Up's:

Starfox Assault (GC)
Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess (GC)

Yeah I forgot to post that I first saw the signs at a MG the other day...almost brought a tear to my eye.

I bought quite a few of those $4 gems, as well.

In honor of this deal, I just spent a few hours playing my $3.99 copy of Lego Batman which I found to be much more fun than my $3.99 copy of Futurama.
