I'm pathetic when it comes to seeing great movies apparently, as Scorch can tell you from an AIM convo he's saved for future uses . I've apparently not seen every great movie that there is to see, though no one can really say they have. I've finally decided to at least point me in the right direction by taking IMDB's top 250 and taking out the movies I've seen and those that didn't interest me from their description. I'm hosting the actual list on my site, which I'm keeping updated as I get suggestions. Feel free to offer any movie you can think of as long as it's good, I shouldn't be getting suggestions of Glitter or Gigli. Don't worry about whether I've seen it or not as I will only add the ones I have and just make a seperate list of those I've seen from the suggestions. You can make fun of me all you want over how I've only been watching shit, and I'm a horrible person for not seeing X movie, or tell me not to watch X movie on the list or you can be helpful and offer up movies that I should see. The only genres of movies I'm not looking to see are horror, seriously messed up movies, westerns, the romantic movies, and the really hard to acquire movies that aren't available at Blockbuster nor Best Buy or similar stores. Thanks for reading all that, or not if you haven't, but anyways here's the list that I have so far:

Ok, here are the movies I own that I feel everyone should see, with a few others thrown in for the hell of it. I'm sure many of these are already on you list, but I'm too lazy to take them out. Also I didn't include anything I haven't seen for obvious reasons.

Movies are a matter of taste. Just go with what you like, because a lot of those movies are questionable on your list.

A perfect example: Citizen Kane, in my opinion is not a must-see unless you're studying film history, or you're into that period of time. If I can remember correctly, it was pretty revolutionary for the way it was shot and edited, but it's no longer a movie that would interest many people today.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Garden State, I Heart Huckabees, The Terminal, and Dawn of the Dead are all must-sees from the last year or so.

The Godfather

Some people will complain because someone's always mentioning The Godfather when it comes to something like this. There's a good reason for that--it's, arguably, the greatest movie ever made. Not that I've helped, but don't let all the hype influence your opinion before you see it. Just be sure to watch it. Of course, you'll have to watch The Godfather II as well.:)

What he said.

Oh yeah, a great film: Chinatown, by Roman Powlanski(sp?)

The Goonies!! I used to love that movie...but I don't know how relevant that is to his search of "great" movies, lol.
Off the top of my head:

Clerks
Raising Arizona
Fargo
I've seen Clerks, but haven't seen the others. Thanks.
All of Subbie's suggestions
Twelve Monkeys (1995)

These are the movies that I have seen on your list and a good number of the ones that I took off I own/actually at the moment have in my posession thanks to the library and renting.

Here are the ones that I would recommend:

25th Hour
American Beauty
American Pie
American Pie 2
American Wedding

Air Force One
American Splendor

Ghost in the Shell
Tokyo Godfathers
Jin-roh
Edward Scissorhands
Dagon (horror, classic unrecognized H.P. Lovecraft. He is one of my favorite authors.)
Dark City
Dead End
Dolce Vita, La
Event Horizon (sci-fi horror with a really cool story, you're choice on this one though as I only do the recommendations)
Fargo
Four Rooms
From Dusk till Dawn (mild horror, but is more action and shutting up vampires then anything. Same goes for the other two)
From Dusk till Dawn 2: Texas Blood Money
From Dusk till Dawn 3 : (don't remember subtitle)
Ferris Bueller's Day Off
Fifth Element, The
Fight Club
Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels
Snatch
Nightmare Before Christmas, The
Office Space
Shaun of the Dead
Lost in Translation
Human Nature
Boot Hill - (Excellent Spaghetti Western/Comedy. Plus it only cost me a dollar from my local .99 cent store, which doesn't tarnish it one bit. If you search around a bit, you can find the other two movies in the series (the ones listed right below this one) for just about the same price (probably won't come in a keep case/hard case though) or you can get the collection for pretty cheap also)
They Call Me Trinity
Trinity Is Still My Name
Spaceballs

Boondock Saints
Get Shorty

Edit Numero Uno: The Watermelon Heist
Terminator
Terminator 2
Terminator 3

I should add that some of the movies I've listed are movies that I myself want to see and that I hear are good, but the vast majority of them I've seen. Also added some descriptions to some of the horror movies.

Anger Management
Happy Gilmore
Billy Madison

Mr. Deeds
Baseketball
Bruce Almighty
Collateral

Princess Mononoke
Road to Perdition

Death to Smoochy - (Excellent dark comedy. Very well acted and Edward Norton rocks)

Top Gun

I think I've given you plent of suggestions for now. I'll probably come again with another round of movies though.;)

Edit: The Wizard of Oz (Absolute classic. I have loved this film ever since my childhood and will continue to do so.)

Edit (lost count): Added some descriptions to some movies and to a few of the Westerns, which you don't really seem interested in.

Edit in the middle of no where:

The Hunt for Red October

I'm taking any movie as long as it's not complete crap and that I'm interested in it. I've seen what it's about and was thoroughly interested by it. These don't have to be the greatest of the great, just good movies that I should see.

Well, if you ever have a hankerin' for some of the worst movies known to man kind, then go try out some Uwe Boll. So bad they're kind of comical (well not really). Eh, who am I kidding, nobody should be subjected to the torture that is Uwe Boll.

I'd disagree here. Yes, if you always go with what you know and like, you'll be happy, but sometimes it's good to branch out and try new things for yourself. I really don't think there are any "must-see" films, just because you can still live a full life without seeing certain movies, ya know. ;)

I'd say that starting with IMDB is a good first move, because it's pretty much selected by your peers, many thousands of them in fact, so if anything, those are your 'must-see' movies. I wouldn't discount a movie just because you don't like the synopsis though. Like I said before, you never know if you don't try. I can name plenty of instances in which I've avoided movies because they didn't seem interesting, and then turned out to be some of my favorites once I was prodded into seeing them (Citizen Kane, L'Avventura, Hedwig and the Angry Inch).

But, that's the best approach really. You've got over a hundred movies to work with there. That should give you a good idea of your own tastes. :D I noticed you weren't interested in 8 1/2, The Seventh Seal or Wild Strawberries. Are you avoiding european art films? And likewise, any other types of movies, aside from horror films and fucked-up movies, that you're just not a fan of? It'll help me tailor my suggestions.
Waiiiiiiiiiiiiit. You said you were movie deprived, but out of Sub's list you only saw Clerks?! :shame::nottalking:

Add and move up What's Eating Gilbert Grape? and Gattaca up your list.
No that was from MP's post since he only suggested three. If you check the response below his post, I have seen some of his list, which I've updated in the OP so that hopefully I don't get them offered every other post.

any gangster movies worth seeing? and mob movies?
ive seen a few like scarface, carlitos way,god father 1-3, amoung other movies!

I tried to at least see what each movie was about, but if I hadn't heard of it and the premise wasn't really something I was interested in, then I just dropped it from the list. Feel free to change my mind if you feel it's something I should see.

As for genres I'm not a fan of, hmm, I'm not a big drama/romance movie fan. I think I'll add to the OP list of movies I have seen a * for those that I've liked, though I usually don't see movies I don't like. You can check my DVD collection for the dvd's I own as I basis for what I like or whatever. Your call for what to suggest really, as I'll at least take a look at what the movie's about and go from there.

citizen kane sucked ass..

Ok, it had camera angles and scene changes that were never seen before..I respect it for that.

But fuck, i'm not going to sit through 2 hours of some slow ass movie that might put me to sleep.

Oh I agree with what you're saying. I'm not saying go with only what you like but that's quite a list he has there, and I was just pointing out some of those movies would be questionable to watch if it wasn't in your taste range. I'm guessing you're a film buff (CheapAssFilmBuff ) and I was trying to put out that the average person won't love Citizen Kane. Might he? You never know, but that list has other great movies, that are probably better suited for such a big undertaking.
I mean his list has mixed Office Space with Ben-Hur...*shrugs*

See what I mean?

Just a few of my favorites off the top of my head (in no particular order):

True Romance
American History X
Road to Perdition
Casino
Platoon
The Professional
Narc
Casino
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
Motorcycle Diaries

A ton of good suggestions already, so I'll just add this:
1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/t...104-0639684-3438348?v=glance&s=books&n=507846
I've been browsing through it recently, and it's got a lot of great recommendations. Although probably only a very serious movie buff is gonna want to see all 1001, there are plenty that would appeal to a more casual movie fan too. The list isn't perfect, but then again, what movie list is?

And, although it has been mentioned, if you haven't seen it:
Apocalypse Now

Apocalypse Now

Apocalypse Now

Go see it...now ;)
Great list but...Mean Girls??:whistle2:s
Bad Santa and Mean Girls are two of the best comedies of the last few years.

You seem to be a pretty big fan of comedies and action/sci-fi films, so that's a good jumping off point. A lot of the classic comedies are incredibly funny, but can feel dated to modern audiences. Good place to start would be with Some Like It Hot, Bringing Up Baby, or It Happened One Night. Likewise, there's the satiric, black comedies like Dr. Strangelove, Brazil or The King of Comedy. They're all decidedly different in tone from modern comedies, so they might not be your 'thing'. :)

As for the action genre, Die Hard is my personal favorite. For classics, you can't go wrong with a good film noir, such as The Big Sleep, Murder My Sweet, Night and the City, The Big Heat, or Laura for starters. Westerns and war movies are a couple of subgenres off of action, mostly. Leone (The Good The Bad and the Ugly, Once upon a Time in the West, Fistful of Dollars) is pretty much the most prolific figure in Westerns, especially to modern audiences, but John Ford's are great as well, just a little less action packed, heh. War movies, there's plenty of those, which have already been covered in the OP. Also, you can't go wrong with Indiana Jones or Star Wars. ;)

Figures my mind is failing me now, but like I said, you've got some great jumping off points there. Zman showed me this book, and I got it from the library and I'd say it makes a great guide to must-see movies, especially for the casual viewer. Check it out at your local library, and it'd help you out greatly.
Yeah, I understand what you're saying. There are plenty of movies that wouldn't appeal to the average person that are classics, but I don't think Citizen Kane is one of them, really. I think that the truly great movies can transcend time, and never really feel dated. I think Kane's really enjoyable, I pop it in many times just to get caught up in the plot, so, I really don't think that the average person wouldn't love Kane, but I'm probably wrong as always
See what I mean?
Yeah, I do.
Hero
Legend Of The Drunken Master
Hero's on the list but Drunken Master isn't, thanks.
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Garden State, I Heart Huckabees, The Terminal, and Dawn of the Dead are all must-sees from the last year or so.
The first two are already on the list, I added the second two, and I'm not interested in horror movies. Thanks for the suggestions.

IMDB had it as the #1 all-time greatest movie, so of course it's already on the list. ;) Thanks for the reinforcement of the suggestions.
What he said.

Oh yeah, a great film: Chinatown, by Roman Powlanski(sp?)
Cool, Chinatown's been added. Thanks.
The Goonies
The Big Lebowski
The Jerk
Apocalypse Now
Boondock Saints
Full Metal Jacket
Kung Pow Enter The Fist
Platoon
I've seen Kung Pow, Goonies, and Big Lebowski, and already have AN, FMJ, and Platoon on the list, but thanks for adding The Jerk.
I'm only recommending these because I know nobody/not many ppl will mention them:

Courage Under Fire (1996)
Kissing Jessica Stein (2001)
Return To Me (2000)
Raise The Red Lantern (1991)
White Oleander (2002)
In The Bedroom (2001)
Gattaca (1997)
Identity (2003)
Billy Elliot (2000)
3-Iron (2004)
Beautiful Boxer (2003)
Oldboy (2003)
In The Mood For Love (2000)
I've heard of a few of these, but haven't seen them. Thanks for the suggestions.
Many, many words and movies. :)
Damn you and your long lists and edits. J/k. I've seen quite a few of your suggestion, but not hardly most of them. I'll check out those horror suggestions and see if I'm interested at least. Thanks for the nice and long list.

Another note, I'm not interested in Westerns, and I may not be too interested in a lot of the old, old 20's, 30's, 40's movies so you might want to give a description on those first if you really think I should see it. Also, if there's a movie that you feel that I may have no freaking clue what it's about(may be a lot) you can add a description so I can at least know a little more about the movie that I'm adding. I'll be giving all of these suggestions a final look over at IMDB before I add them to the final list, so don't be surprised if I remove a few for whatever reasons. As for good movies to suggest, I'm hugely into comedies (I enjoy mostly everything), sci-fi, and quite a big of action movies.

Keep 'em coming.

O.K., that's officially two suggestions for that one movie book. It shall be mine now, or at least tomorrow when I hit up the library. Some of these suggestions have even helped me. keep up the great work guys. Oh and Tanuki, you might want to hit up the Last Movie You Saw threads. those have plenty of great movies, though be vigilant since some can be terrible (like my two postings of Alone in the Dark and House of the Dead)
I've seen Kung Pow, Goonies, and Big Lebowski, and already have AN, FMJ, and Platoon on the list, but thanks for adding The Jerk.
If you like Steve Martin you should watch Dirty Rotten Scoundrels as well.

That's why I created this thread, so I don't have to sifting through people's garbage for good stuff and just get the goods directly from the people.

I don't think you're wrong, but maybe slightly off. :p I personally, enjoyed Citizen Kane, but I don't think it's one of the "greatest" movies of all time. I don't know, for the average movie goer, I doubt that, rosebud is what they are expecting after watching what was called "The Greatest Movie Ever," by (Insert famous magazine that I forgot).

What about Disney films (Excluding the crap after Mulan). Spirited Away even? I guess animated films should be left out...or anime at least.

As for action. The Rock! Mindless, but fun. :bouncy:

I know, I didn't expect it either. But then I bought the dvds on a few recommendations and watched it twice the first week.

The Emperor's New Groove is on my list up top, one of my favorite disney movies. Though I also like Mulan which doesn't seem to be all that popular.

Also last night I was watching Lizzie McGuire and it was the episode where Miranda tries acting ... anyway at the end of the episode she joins the glee club and sings a song from Mulan.

well...my sig is host to a very good movie *insert joystick smilie here*

i recomend The Last Samurai because despite its misinterpretation of samurai code, its a beautiful movie

The Emperor's New Groove was a Disney movie? I always thought it was one of those cheap Disney-like animated rip-off movies that came out during that time. I'm probably thinking of movies like "The Road to Eldarado (which I've never seen either). Maybe I'll check them out.

P.S. I

Eh... I thought Mean Girls was decent. It showed that Tina Fey had some talent at least. I'll admit the movie had its parts, but I didn't think it was anything really special or great.

Emperor's New Groove is a hilarious Disney movie that is greatly underrated and seems to be included in all of the Disney bashing, just because a lot of people sort of feel that it is the "cool" "in" thing to do. I'll admit that some of the recent Disney movies have been terrible like Treasure Planet, ugh, but ever so often there are diamonds in the rough like Emperor's New Groove and Lilo and Stitch that don't get the praise that they deserve.

Mulan wasn't bad either for the recent crop of Disney films.

I tried to watch Scarface once, but got distracted and missed most of it. Thanks for the additions.
The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly.

As I forgot to mention, I'm not a fan of westerns, but thanks for the Kurosawa suggestion.
A lot of words and stuff.
Thanks for the suggestions. I've seen Die Hard, great movie, Star Wars and Indiana Jones, and I have a few of the comedy suggestions already on the list. I did forget to mention that I'm not a fan of westerns, so those won't be added. Thanks again and feel free to offer any other movies you think of.

Go see it...now ;)
Apocalypse is definitely, so I'll be watching it ASAP. Thanks for the book suggestion, I'll have to stop in the library next time I remember to and see if they have the book. Thanks.
If you like Steve Martin you should watch Dirty Rotten Scoundrels as well.
I've heard a lot of good about the Jerk, so I'll be adding that as well. Thanks again.

I have seen Spirited Away and loved it. Definitely include anime movies as long as you don't give me anime series suggestions since there's another thread where I can get those easily. I haven't seen The Rock yet since the name made me thing of the wrestler then I was sad since he wasn't in it.  Thanks for the suggestions.

Do you mean the Cowboy Bebop Movie? I'll add The Last Samurai to the list. Thanks.

I love this thread. Here are a couple of more movies:

Swingers- Vince Vaughn at his funniest.

Blazing Saddles- Mel Brooks. It's really not a Western.
