I'm trying to start up a DVD collection for myself. Movies most guys just know are classics and should have in there homes to watch in case one of those days rolls around where your bored and want to watch something awesome, or awesomely bad its funny.
So far ive collected the following.

Full Metal Jacket
Sin City
Kill Bill 1&2
Donnie Darko
Crash
Predator
Total Recall
Anchor Man
The 40 year old Virgin
Napolean Dynamite
American Beauty
A history of Violence
Garden State
The Last Kiss (im a Zach Braff fan)
Team America
Riki-Oh!
The Matrix trilogy

So I dont have much really, but I want to get more. I just can't really think of anything epically awesome or funny that needs to be in this collection.

I know I really want a copy of American Physco because Christian Bale is the fucking man, and that movie is awesome.
O! Old school, I need that one. What else...hmmm. Evil Dead 3! Ahh my brains rolling now.
okay i cant think of anymore...

So if you
could profide some awesome movies that would be awesome! :applause:

You should rename the topic to must own movies because if you're looking for must own DVDs then that is a totally different subject since then you would have to get specific with which DVD version is the one to get etc.

You are looking for:

http://imdb.com/chart/top

Pretty much the definitive list for the intrawebz. That list works perfectly for you, since it's pretty much generated by males (see: Gone With The Wind at 173) and has some more recent stuff (like 300, Sin City) on it.

But... umm... pretty much all Scorsese (at least Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, and Goodfellas), Tarantino's work, Scarface, One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, Godfather, Godfather Part II, Fight Club, American Psycho, American History X, The Graduate, Rain Man, Memento, Fargo, Gladiator... the list goes on and on. O_O

You have to have

Clerks
Office Space
The Big Lebowski
Monty Python and the Holy Grail

They are 4 of the best movies ever made.

evil dead 3? u should start with evil dead 1 and 2 and then get army of darkness. amazon has the necronomicon special editions of evil dead 1 and 2 on sale for like 27$.

Find the unrated DVD of American Psycho. Last time I saw it, it was at Ciruit City for 10 bux. also, try Equilibrium, which is basically Christian Bale + Matrix + Fahrenheit 451.

other good Christian Bale flicks: Batman Begins, Shaft (Samuel L. Jackson version), Reign of Fire, The Machinist, The Prestige.
My girlfriend loves Newsies and Swing Kids....

I also suggest (from my collection):
Fight Club
Ninja Scroll
Freddy vs Jason
Street Fighter II V "ahhh! - I HAVE TO SAVE CHUN LI!!!!"
Starship Troopers
Pablo Francisco: Bits & Pieces
Office Space
Chronicles of Riddick
Blade Trilogy
Iron Monkey
Ong Bak
Grandma's Boy
300
Apocalypto

And for a quick adrenaline rush:
Grappler Baki OVA

Get rid of full metal jacket and get the Kubrick complete set, every movie is worth owning, and they're all different, so good for every occasion.

I don't own many DVDs myself as I generally don't really want to watch the same movie over and over. But here are a few I'd say are must owns for anyone that likes to have some DVDs around.

Monty Python's Quest for the Holy Grail
Animal House - "Fat, drunk, and not owning this DVD is no way to go through life, son."
The Matrix
Star Wars Ep 3-6
This thread is super subjective.

Anyway, I only watch movies made before 1965. (well, not only, but mainly)
how come 1965? is that year completely random or did something change in filmmaking? color in films perhaps?

Just threw the date out there, I started thinking about the stuff I've seen recently and they're generally before then. (i don't specifically search out dates on movies as criteria for worthiness or anything)

Though the 60s were ripe with changes in filmmaking, but you see the effects during and after, not before. (thanks to the French and Italians)

thanx, but dvds were def my drug of choice for awhile, really slowed down lately
Good list, but never say that line.
Haha, ya, I was being facetious.

But in my opinion, those are some of the best movies of all time, and would easily recommend any of them. Depends on your tastes too, I prefer 90s/00s dramas to everything else, so I'm a bit biased.

Obviously, I have about 350 DVDs, so I enjoy a lot more of those in each category.

A Clockwork Orange
Excalibur
Caddyshack
Phantasm
One flew over the cuckoos nest
The Godfather
Altered States
Tommy Boy
Animal House
True Grit
The Getaway
Bambi
lordwow made a nice list.

Anyway, add the Professional/Leon to that.
I went back and forth on Leon for a minute, it nearly ended up in the Foreign/Indy section. But ya, I own it, and it's really good.

EDIT: Ok, I'll add it now that I've thought about it some more.

Sweet thanks so much you guys.
All of your feedback really helps me out a lot.
Sorry for being so vague I guess.
But I honestly just wanted your guys/gals opinions on movies of the "most own" category
and you just did as I asked. so thank you!!!

If you're looking for a good stylized action flick, try Running Scared. Personally, I think it's one of the most overlooked and underappreciated movies out there.

I have a few suggestions for you, it really depends on what you're looking for in genre and taste. I'll try not to mention any that have already been suggested...well, here's a few suggestions:

An American Werewolf in London
Aragami : The Raging God of Battle
Bad Taste (The Peter Jackson one, really funny)
The Big Lebowski
The Blues Brothers
Cemetery Man
Dead-Alive (If you can find the Braindead version, get that one)
Equilibrium (I know it's been mentioned, but I'd recommend it as well)
Frailty (definately underrated)
Leprechaun (just kidding )
Mr. Vampire
Oldboy
Public Enemy (The Korean one)
Robocop
Seven Samurai
Suspiria
Versus
Yojimbo
::And for some Hitchcock ones:::
Rear Window (I know I said suggestions, but this one's a must )
Rope
Psycho
Saboteur
Shadow of a Doubt
Vertigo

I know there's more good movies that I'd recommend in DVD format, but I can't think of them off the top of my head right now. At any rate, there's some recommendations that you can look up on IMDB, etc... Enjoy.

EDIT:: I know someone mentioned Arrested Development which is a good choice for television. Here's a few more TV shows that are worth getting:

Monty Python's Flying Circus
Kids in the Hall
Twilight Zone
Quantum Leap
Entourage

And once again there's a ton of other great ones on DVD, but this should get you on the right track of amassing a good collection of must own/must see DVDs.

My collection is sort of small but full of amazing films.

Here are some I would recommend

A Fistful of Dollars
For A Few Dollars More
The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly
Taxi Driver
Apocalypse Now! The Complete Dossier
Dazed and Confused -Criterion Collection Edition
Most DVDs the Criterion Collection puts out are all at least interesting Films
Raging Bull
Dog Day Afternoon
Once Upon A Time In The West
Brick
Capote
Annie Hall

I didn't see anyone mention Stripes or Ghostbusters - 2 of my favorite comedies. I tend to buy comedies and war flicks for my own collection.
