Listen here, rainbow coalition. Give me five examples of black protagonists, female protagonists, latino protagonists, and gay/lesbian protagonists. Without resorting to artificially diversified fighting games, sequels (Lara Croft only counts once), or games where you can create your characters.
Blacks:
CJ, Jade, Marcus Reed, Dead Shephard (main character in Men of Valour), John Dalton and Cole-Train (Unreal II and Gears), Tyler Miles (Indigo Prophecy)... shoot, you just wanted five. And all these characters are PLAYABLE, four of them being THE main character.
Female:
Laura Croft, Samus, Joanna Dark, Jill Valentine, Jade, and since I already mentioned Jade once in the Blacks list I'll throw in Ms. Pac-Man for good measure.
Latino:
Irena (R6:V), Joe Ramirez (GRAW2), Zoë Castillo, Isabella and Carlito from Dead Rising, Paul Rodriguez (Tony Hawk). The lack of Latino protaganists is prevalent across all entertainment mediums, yet I was able to come up with six off the top of my head.
Gays:
You don't even want to go here. There is a stronger LGBT precense in videogames than any other entertainment medium I can think of... unless you count gay porn as its own medium... and then videogames still give it a run for its money.
Fallout 2, Shadow Hearts (and Shadowhearts 2), Vamp from MGS, Tommy from Indigo Prophecy, the lesbian couple in KOTOR. The main character in Jade Empire you PLAY AS is gay (although being an RPG, that's left up to the player to decide). And if you want giant lists of gays in JRPGs and fighters, you can find homosexuality to your heart's content at gaygamer.com (though some only humorously speculated at).
