I currently have a 50 inch sony sxrd 1080p tv. I paid roughly $3500 for it in 2005. I am going to be going on my 3rd repair thru tweeter for it. Since it is the 3rd repair, I believe they give me my money back via store credit. Haven't really looked into the tv market in awhile, anyone have any recommendations? It needs to be 1080p, I will have roughly $3500 in credit at tweeter, and I don't want a tv bigger then 60inches. I watch a lot of hd dvd/blu ray movies, and play a fair amount of games. So I would hope for a tv that doesn't have a refresh problems for the games or burn in problems. Thanks in advance for any help.

All of the Samsung DLPs are great for HD viewing, specifically gaming and hd-dvd/brd. Any Samsung TV from 2005 on has a built in "gaming mode". Although you probably won't use such a feature without making your own personal tweaks to your display settings, it is comforting to know a TV manufacturer has built their TV with gaming specifically in mind. A friend of mine has the 56" Samsung DLP from last year and it looks absolutely phenominal with his 360 and DircetTV HD channels. Their newest 56" 1080p DLP with the slim LED engine would be just right for what you're looking for...here's a link:

If DLP isn't your thing, I have another friend who owns this Sony rear projection 1080p:

It does gaming very well also, although as far as overall picture quality is concerned I'd have to go with the Samsung DLPs...

The high end Mitsubishi projection TVs are worth their weight in gold as well, but you'd be hard pressed to find one in your desired size range with all the features of their 73" DLP. Hope this helps a little...

thanks i will have to look into the samsung one...I have a sony sxrd model currently, and it has broken down a lot...I dont have that model, but I doubt I will get another sony

Good, my hate for Sony runs deep...but I thought maybe there was some brand loyalty so you might want to know. Those Samsung TVs are gorgeous, seriously...I can't praise them enough.

I think you need to narrow down exactly the size TV you want first, because the choices will change a whole lot if you are talking 50" vs. 60". At 50" I'd probably be looking at 1080p plasma displays. I like the Panasonic and Samsung models. Do some research on these:

If you are talking larger than 50" then I think you'll pretty much have to go with a rear projection display of some sort.

I had a 60" SXRD XBR1 that started giving me green blobs. Is that the problem you are getting? Best Buy replaced the Optics block or whatever it was called twice and called it quits offering a replacement after just two attempts instead of three since the part was so expensive. If the service plan at Tweeter is the same, they will not give you straight up credit but instead will give you credit towards another TV. So if your replacement TV is less than your current one you will not get the extra. I could be wrong about this, but you may want to look into that as well.
When I replaced mine I wanted to get the 60" XBR2 as the new models do not have the same quality issues as the XBR1s but Best Buy does not carry the 60" XBR2 so I upgraded to the 70" XBR2. Best Buy gave me about $1000 off as well as crediting me the $4000 I had spent on the 60" XBR1. I had to pay the difference that with tax amounted to a few hundred. Alot of money to drop on a TV, yes, but I also wanted to stay with the XBR line of SXRD TVs as they are widely regarded as having excellent picture quality and I didn't want to leave Best Buy with any of the credit.

I have a SXRD a2020 60in that I bought about a month ago. Think its awesome so far. Hopefully I dont run into problems mentioned above...though i did buy a 4yr warranty so should be covered either way =]

I'll vouch for the Samsung DLP's having great picture quality. I've got a 2006 46" 720p set, and the HD content is absolutely gorgeous.

My two complaints:
1) My VGA input now semi-randomly puts everything in a bright red tint, and I'm out of warranty. :( Tried two different VGA cables, and it kept doing it, so it's the input.
2) I have noticed a fair little bit of overscan. For example, the "black bars" on Metroid Prime 3 are just barely visible on my set, and any subtitled anime that I stream to my TV has enough of all the edges cut off to take out parts of the subtitles. This wasn't a problem with the VGA input (you can put it in a PC screen mode and adjust the boundaries of the display), but it pops up with the HDMI and component. If my VGA still worked perfectly, this wouldn't be a problem...

Otherwise, mine is a great set. If I could fix the overscan, I would be happy. Hell, if I knew how to fix the VGA input myself, I would be happy.

The A2020 is not known to have the same issues as the XBR1 did.

How are you liking the 70" XBR2? I'm considering the 70" XBR5, which comes out soon. What is your seating distance by the way? Mine's about 13-14 feet, so I'm hoping 70" will be about the right size.

Hate to break it to you but Samsung TVs ARE Sony tvs. lol

It is awesome! Picture quality is amazing, everybody that sees it is blown away. My seating distance is about the same, maybe a foot or two more depending where, and on which, sofa I am sitting. I wouldn't trade it for any LCD of plasma TV. One of my friends liked it so much he went and bought a 70" XBR2 as well.

You should get the new Sony KDL-52XBR4

I have last year's model the XBR2/3 and it's amazing. This year's model now has the new 10-bit chip as well as the ability to do 120hz and 24 frames per second playback with blu-rays.

There is more to an HDTV than the panel. The panels are manufactured in the same factories but they use different software. Ex. The Bravia EX video processor and Samsung's DNie.
