Need help picking out a good tv.

Now, that is a big tv for $800! However, I question RCA and their quality. Also, CRT rear projections don't have very good viewing angles if I recall.

Garbage dude! Stay away from CRT projo they're dead technology and they're no where near as sharp as newer technology. Let me go search some links of stuff and I'll edit this post.

CC has the olivia 32 inch lcd hd on say for 550 quite frequently (i bought it and like it alot only regret is i didn't spring for the 37 inch). You can often find the 37 inch for 800 esk think i might have even seen it for 750 a few weeks back at office depot. Had my 32 inch for 2 months is all but oblivion looks so much nicer on it than onmy 36 inch sony trinitron tube SD.

How do you know which one is better? I always hear people saying how this one is better then this one...why? What kind of resolution do you need? I am clueless about this.
if size/weight isnt an issue id recommend this http://www.circuitcity.com/ccd/productDetail.do?oid=147206

Its what im debating picking up for the apt next year. I already have the olevia 537 and crts are way better if you will be watching an sd source.
That monster would be my first suggestion, but most people don't take kindly to suggesting direct view CRT's....

OP, that Sony I just quoted is hands down the best image quality possible, nothing can beat a direct view CRT, nothing. Imagine the versatility of LCD, with the contrast of plasma, and the color sepration of DLP, now make it all 10x more clear, crisp, and beautiful, that's what a CRT direct view looks like at 1080i, and even 480p/i

There's a Hitachi 51" 1080i CRT RPTV for $699 at Best Buy this week. A friend of mine got it for $800 last black friday and he loves the thing to death.
Wow now that is a great deal! To bad I don't have money to blow on a TV...
factor in its 40 more off with the coupon of a 200+ purchase.

If you're talking about those coupons, they are not valid on Sony XBR tvs, which this model is. And if you're thinking about getting it, do it soon. It's discontinued. Best Buy is already done with it.

I was just gonna post this...I remember when this tv was over $2k!!!

Anyways, the only negative is the size/weight (as mentioned)...you'll need at least 2-3 people to move it. But it's probably THE best display you can get for that price right now.

Even better would be using a 10% coupon (like from AAA) on it. :)

I hope by next year I can get a decent HDTV for under $500. I really don't have the dough for anything more expensive.

you should be able to find a philips or sanyo 30 inch hd crt for roughly 500 i think right now.

I'm glad there are some pro CRT people on these boards...

OP, if you can deal with the size, I will add my recommendation in for the XBR.

There is nothing like the picture quality, hopefully the SED TVs in a few years will surpass the CRT HDTVs.

While the color is amazing on CRTs, I personally can't stand them. I have yet to purchase a CRT HD set (I've owned 3) that did not have horrible geometry issues with the Sony being the worst of the bunch. I guess if that is something that doesn't bother you that much go with a tube, but it drives me crazy.

Yeah I've noticed this on newer sets more frequently.

You have to be lucky to a certain extent, as some are completely free of this problem.

I don't see any problems with mine though instead of the 970 I'd suggest the 960 as it's made in the U.S. and has more features on it over the 970. Other then that the 970 is the same pretty much except the Firewire and Memory Stick Pro Duo slot are gutted. I've heard speculation the tube isn't exactly the same or as good though I can't verify this or discredit it. I just heard that.
Rodeo those types of problems should be able to be fixed with proper calibration.

Yes, the 960 has a finer dot pitch, it's a better tube.

As for geometry and CRT

the ONLY CRT with geometry issues I've seen are Samsungs

and even then, they can be fixed.

However, bad color separation, ghosting, limited viewing angles, and blurry images can't be fixed = ) CRT is still number one when it comes to image quality.

Actually, I take that back, all those problems can be fixed, you just need to spend at least $1500 more.

I don't even need to read the other posts...stay the fuck away from RCA CRTs. Shit, stay away from RCA all together. My parents got a Hitachi 61" CRT HDTV back in 2005 and it still looks good. I looked at the RCA that they had for 500 bucks less at the time, and it looked like pure fucking shit! If you want to go projection route, DLP or even LCD projection is the way to go. I have a 42" LCD projection Sony unit. I don't see myself giving a shit about 1080p for several more years, so 1080i is perfectly fine by me.

Lord knows that if I had the money and my own house with the space, I'd be buying me one of those 70 something inch 1080p sets...lol. I've always dreamed about my own personal home theater!

I'm seriously contemplating throwing down for one of these in the next few months. Fiancee might flip out since I just bought a new surfboard, but whatev, I hear its all about buying everything I ever wanted before I get married anyways. ;)

My dad bought the Hitachi 57" CRT rear projection from CC a few months back for about $900. Great TV.

Of course, I am going to try and convince you to up your limit to $850 and get a 720p Projector so you can have a 100"+ plasma-like screen.

This has been a really interesting thread, and it's hit me at just the right time... I've been strongly considering going HD recently (if it wasn't for the 360, I'd be happy with my old 27" standard). Keep the recommendations and discussion coming. Very useful!

I rec. this TV - Hitachi 51" CRT Projection HD Monitor

http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Hita...48043/catOid/-12867/rpem/ccd/productDetail.do

I currently have it and it's a great TV. A lot better than that RCA. Even people at that major Audio / Video site gave it great reviews for a CRT TV. It also comes with free delivery as well. You might want to wait a bit, cause I have seen this TV lower than it is currently at. (It was at $699 last week)

Good on ya for spreading the CRT love with me. Hey any chance of me being able to add you to my XBL friend's list?
