Newbie on RPG games

Hi.
I've never played a RPG game, mostly i like shooters and action kind of games, but it seems that a lot of people likes RPG's, so I'd like to hear (read) some suggestions on where to start.
I'd like to get a cheap/good game for the 360 to start with and see if I like it, a classis would be just great.
Thanks.

Blue Dragon is reasonably cheap and somewhat simplistic (not in a bad way), though it's still good. It's got a very "classic" feel to it. Turn-based party Japanese RPG style. Very linear.
For American PC-style RPG, Oblivion (The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion), which is also more of a real-time first person/third person action game with RPG elements (character building, story, affecting the world). Much less linear.
Eternal Sonata is sort of between the two, it starts out turn based but moves to "active time battle" type, where you have a limited amount of time to take your turns.
I heard Two Worlds wasn't very good, and Dark Messiah of Might and Magic is an Oblivion wannabe. Enchanted Arms was interesting, I enjoyed it for about fifteen hours, then got bored--it adds creature building/collection to it.
I'd say Blue Dragon is the most "representative" RPG on 360 that I've played. If you like action games, Oblivion's gameplay is more like that, but it's a biiiiig/long game. The regular, non-GOTY edition is probably 30 bucks, BD is 15-30. Oblivion's GotY edition contains the two extra content packs, but it's still full price, I think. They're both different enough that you won't feel like you've bought the same game if you get the both.

I was talked into Lost Odyssey by these bastards...but reading the reviews and impressions and looking at the screens...definitely looks like it will be fun.

Got it a couple of weeks ago. Wish I hadn't waited so damn long. :)
Good stuff....

It's great that you're expanding your gaming interests. When I got my Wii and fielded GC recommendations, a ton of people threw out RPG games. I played through Tales of Symphonia and loved it but found myself forcing the other games and not really enjoying it. So keep in mind that you might just not like certain games regardless of how good they are for what they are.

Sorry.. all that rant and no recommendation, lol

OP is asking for an 360 game, so I'm moving this out of the General Gaming forum. It could be merged into the General Info thread, but it could get lost in there. So for now, it'll stand as is in the 360 forum.

Eternal Sonata and Blue Dragon seem good if you are interested in a Japanese RPG.

Mass Effect and Oblivion are more traditional RPGs in that they are actually RPGs.

care to elaborate? i would consider the jRPGs the more traditional RPGs. also, what makes eternal sonata and blue dragon not actually RPGs?

Maybe "traditional" is not the right word. Games like Mass Effect and Oblivion are usually referred to as Western RPG's.

To the OP, I would suggest Mass Effect because while it is not perfect, has a great combat system and a great story. I know that you specifically said 360 but if you REALLY want to play some good RPG's I would suggest picking up a PS2 or SNES and playing some of the older classics like Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana, Final Fantasy VII and Final Fantasy X. Also if you have access to a PC, Baldur's Gate II and Fallout II are also both fantastic and will run on even the dinkiest of computers.

Sorry for mentioning so much non-360 stuff but honestly the 360 is not the best console for RPG's (not yet at least). If you're a newbie to RPG's you should start out on the PC/SNES/PS1/PS2.

Since you like shooters and action games, I think your best option would be to start with Mass Effect. It seems like a perfect transition point for you since it includes the best of both your old interests and your new ones.

I thought RPGs revolved around creating a personalized character and actually playing a role.

In Japanese RPGs you are not playing a role at all, that's why you call them JRPGs.

But yes, those games are traditional JRPGs (ES being an action-JRPG) whereas ME and Oblivion are your basic authentic RPGs (with action gameplay).

Oblivion is the best entry level rpg in my book. It allows fps players to play without feeling totally clueless. After that Mass Effect is an easier one to play, as its got some 3rd person shooting to it.

I wouldn't jump right into jrpg if I were you, as you will probably hate it if you haven't warmed up to the genre slowly.

i just picked up Eternal Sonata, which gets pretty good rating. I got mine at a local Walmart. They are having a sale with that game, retail 39.99. On sale now for 24.99!!!
