Newer 360's without Red LED's?

poolshark181

CAGiversary!
I read in another post that the newer 360's don't have Red Leds built in anymore. Is this true? If it is, how does this work with the 3 year RROD warranty, or does it not and microsoft is being sneaky?

I heard that it has not happened yet, but it will. Reason being that people think their Xbox 360 is dead, when really it is blinking 4 red lights due to an AV problem.
easy way to find out, turn on 360 without AV cable plugged in
Okay I tried that. Just 4 green lights. The manufacture date on my 360 is sometime in Sept. Any other tests? Taking out the red LEDs would be a pretty funny solution to preventing RRoDs.

i tried that, and no lights lit up, just the standard green. but that was with the jack not plugged into the 360, not the cords not plugged into the tv. should i try the cord method?

I can verify, I just unplugged the AV cord from the back of my 360 and I didn't get the red lights like I used to on my old 360. My new 360 was manufactured 9/18/07 (give or take a few days, don't feel like looking again).

Microsoft is un-fucking-believable.

EDIT: How am I gonna know when I RRoD if I don't have red LEDs??? :bomb:

Wow,

This is not going to look good at all if it pans out. I was actually going to be buying a 360 soon as well... I better hold off for amonth or two and see if they have built in another way of get the RroD.

This is hilarious. If this is true, this should be front page news. My 360 is in Texas right now, I wonder if I will get back the new and improved "RROD proof" 360. HA!

Wait, did M$ remove the red LEDs completely or just get rid of the full red ring AV error? Is there any way to see if you have red lights?

My understanding was only the AV error (4 red lights) was eliminated because n00bs where inundating MS with "OMFG I GOTZ THE RRoD" calls. Since four red lights makes a ring I can see how someone who didn't R.T.F.M. would do this. My brother Lee about poo'ed his pants when he got this on his (his switch was halfway between SD and HDTV)

Do the towel trick but with the opposite intent!

This is exactly what I'm thinking as well. They probably got rid of the ring of light error messages for everything except full hardware failure to avoid confusion.

lol

obviously they have fixed the RROD problem then. they arnt just gonna remove the red LED for no reason, because then how would people know if their 360 was broken or not?

Huh? I think I'll know when my 360 is broken - with or without the red leds...
Best fix ever.

This is like disabling the 'check engine soon' light on your car.

Say hello to your new friend: GROD!

they probably fixed it though, otherwise doing that would get them extremely bad rep, which i dont think they want/need anymore.

I can sympathize with this. One day I was moving my 360, and realized I'd left a game in there. Not wanting to hook everything up at once, I just connected the power and hit 'eject', and nearly had a goddamn heart attack when the four red lights started flashing. I managed to remember something about it being only three red lights being general hardware failure, and I was right, but I can definitely see people not thinking of this immediately and bitching at MS.

As hilarious as the situation might very well be, it looks like they just simply did away with the FOUR RROD. Which is good, since it cuts down on the number of false alarms for M$.

Sadly, we won't know until someone gets a RROD on a newer 360. And then people will freak out over that

Which would be a blessing in disguise for me, since my CES light comes on every once in a while.

QFT.

well i just ordered the 360 elite, how do you know when your console was made? does it say on the box or system?

I know that is definitely on the back of the system. Not sure about the box. I doubt it.

i got my elite when they came out last may i think it was, and i dont get the 4rrod when the av is unplugged (i just tried when i read the thread)...i guess we'll never know until somebody really gets rrod on a newer 360

it would be hilarious if they did take them out though

This explains why they're offering a three year warranty. Once the red light ones are off the market, that's it. It's essentially getting you a one-time replacement.

Shady as hell.

The color of the lights don't matter. What matters is the quadrants that are lit. The various lit patterns on the ring of light indicate general error codes.

You read one of the million of web pages that explains it so that you dont have to ask=) Did someone order the Xbox for you as well?

J/K Bro.... Well, half kidding................

I wonder if Microsoft's foreign CS would go apeshit if we started a prank where one day everyone calls and claims different colored ring of deaths. "My 360 isn't working and all its doing it blinking 3 purple lights!"

We can record the calls and laugh at the absurdity of explaining the different colors and how its definitely not red. Nobody expects an April Fools joke in December!

Then get it checked? I mean most auto stores do this for free now.

 I joked about that months ago on dvdtalk. Not so funny anymore if it is true.

I can honestly say I don't know. I'm the guy who never has his own weed but when someone brings the pipe out I magically appear. I haven't smoked since September though. Don't judge me! :D

Lets just send MS a nice email politely asking them to explain. I m sure they would ....... right ?..... anyone ?
