NHL 09 CAG Team - CAG Game Night - Fridays @ 10 PM EST

Tomorrow I have a FORZA 2 gaming group with my car board members. But maybe 12 am I should be good. Sorry I left early guys, apperntly friends dont listen when you tell them your busy and stop by anyways. Dumb question, but would anybody want to practice during the week and what not?

I echo Matt Young's sentiments. We had a really fun night last night. I was really impressed by all the CAGs who came out! It was cool having multiple games going at once. I could hardly keep up with who was playing with who.

I know we're definitely not the best team in EASHL, but we rarely get embarrassed. A lot of times I just think our guys are outmatched statistically. We play against teams who are bigger and faster, and are ridiculously skilled at handling the puck. I almost wish the game would show you the players ratings for the guys on the other team before the game starts, so you would at least know what you're going up against.

Anyway, I'm just trying to figure out how to make my player better. I actually enjoy playing center and distributing the puck, but I really don't feel like I win enough faceoffs to justify it. I'm definitely going to be practicing this coming week. I hope to see everybody back for:

For the little time I was there, It was a blast. I think what set's us off and makes us different is that we are just playing to have fun and it's a blast. Sure we might lose by 4, but F it. Were having a blast playing with other CAG's.

Also, I was wondering for those that saw me play, What do you think I could Improve on? I was playing Left D(#2-Russell) last night Cause somebody took my Right D ;) It's all good though.

I think my problem is when it's a one on one and I go to check and it completely misses. Also IMHO, The cross checking penalties are bogus, half the time you get them, half the time you don't.

Sorry I missed last night guys. Sounds like it was a nice turnout. If anyone is down for playing some games this weekend as Matt Young suggested, I'd be down.

Hey guys, this is kind of off topic, but I saw this deal posted on Slickdeals, and thought some of you might find it useful, so I wanted to give you first crack at it. www.hockeyattire.com currently has a ridiculous 70% coupon valid right now.

A lot of their NHL jerseys are out of stock, but I was able to get a Philadelphia Phantoms jersey (not really a fan...just like the design) for $24. 2 Sabres sweatshirts (I am a Sabres fan) for $10.50 each (originally $34.99), and a hat for $3.90 (originally $12.99). Shipping is a flat $9.88, so it's best to buy multiple items. But considering my whole order was under $60 shipped, I think it's a hell of a deal!

Use coupon code: alloff70

EDIT - Whoa! Just found a much bigger selection of stuff on their "sister site". www.hockeygiant.com. Bigger selection of jerseys, shirts, etc. Use code holiday08 for 70% off here. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to apply to equipment. Getting a new pair of skates at 70% off would rock my world sideways, but sadly, there will be no rocking.

EDIT 2 - Hmm...the "sister site" seems to be less generous. The coupon only applies to "certain items", which basically narrows it down to the same stuff as the hockeyattire site. They've still got pretty good prices though, so I'll leave that link in there for your general holiday hockey needs :)

NICE! Thanks for that! All I need is a good set of Hockey Pants and I can start playing again. But to find my size is impossible.

Ive always wanted to join this league but I never got around to it. I have no idea how it works either because I've never done the EASHL.

I play NHL 09 way more than any other game so I think I'd fit right in.

Who should I ask to be invited? I read the OP but it seems like none of those guys have played NHL 09 in a while. it seems n8rockerasu is the ring leader of this gig, so should I send you a message asking to be invited?

Well, I just noticed yesterday, that the other guys were kind enough to make me one of the GMs, so I do have the power to send out invites now. Just send me a message on Live so I know your gamertag (mine is n8rocker82) and I'll make sure you get an invite.

We've been playing on Friday nights at 10 PM EST. You MAY see guys on at other random times, but it's pure chance...which is why we needed the Hockey Night to begin with. Look forward to seeing you out there!

I wanted to answer this question because I'd like people's feedback as well. The biggest thing I noticed in the couple games I played with is that you had a few bad penalties (all of which were cross checking, I think). I know it's dumb to tell a defenseman to not hit people so much, but most of the time the game calls it when you hit somebody who is not anywhere near the puck.

It's tough playing defense without completely taking guys out of plays, but just stay in your area, and be ready to hit. Also, just be ready to dive to block passes/shots down near the goal.

I know for me personally, I've almost gotten used to playing a defensive center. I've played with a lot of defensemen online who play terrible defense, so I spend a lot of my time protecting the goal and diving to block shots. This causes me to be slow getting back up the ice when we get the puck.

I played a few random games last night to work, and I did less of this. I still played defense, but if the puck got down along the boards where one of my defensemen could get it, I started to break up ice. It lead to a lot more scoring opportunities. Since the CAG team doesn't score many goals, I feel like I gotta up my game in that regard.

My other problem is faceoffs. I've been scouring the internet for the exact strategy to use (it still baffles me that EA couldn't bother to tell you how to win a faceoff in the manual). The best strategy I've found is to hold the left stick toward a defenseman, and as the puck is about to hit the ice, flick the right stick down. It still said that faceoff ratings come greatly into play, but this gives you the best chance.

I even moved all my NHL 09 data to a memory card to see if starting over and throwing all my points at the "faceoff" stat would make any difference. I started out with a rating of 80 for faceoffs, but added all 7 points to it to make it 87. I then played a few games, and still won like 5 out of 28 faceoffs. My BAP that I had been using has a rating of 80 (which I thought was good enough). Should I just be playing more to up my stats?

Anyway, that's where I think my problems lie. I enjoy playing center, and think I do a pretty good job passing (passing rating is a 90) and setting guys up for goals. If I could just start winning AT LEAST 50% of the faceoffs and leading the charge a little better, I know it would help the team.

Also, just wanted to update the "active roster" with the guys who came out this past week. I'm sure I missed a few people this time. It's just hard to remember how everybody was divided up among the 3 teams...especially if I didn't play with them. Somebody help me out with anybody else who played.

For faceoffs, I quickly flick the right stick backwards as soon as I see the ref's arm move. If I flick it too early in anticipation, I then flick it upwards when the ref moves his arm. The other night, I had probably a 3-1 win ratio in the game that went into triple overtime.

Also, as a defenseman, it is frustrating when the forwards fall back too much. The wingers really need to stay with their pointmen, and the center should fall back to the low slot when the puck gets to the endboards. When all the wingers and center fall back, it's hard to cover as a defensemen because there are to many people to skate around. Also, one we get the puck, it's easier to break out since their defensemen/pointmen will not have as much ice to set up a wall since our wingers are already in their face.

And when we are attacking, don't forget about us on the point! When all three forwards are low in the slot, and there isn't room to maneuver and there is no shot, send it back to one of us. CHances are, we'll have a good shot with a screen since their are so many bodies, or we can play quarterback by slowing the play down, giving you a chance to break from your marker, and passing it to an open man.

Finally, don't forget that you can skate to the sideboards. Basically, every single game we played, as soon as we crossed the blue line into the offensive zone, everyone broke towards that middle and created a bottleneck.

How do you know when guys on your team are online? Is there any sort of indication that pops up or do you both have to be in some in-game menu at the same time?

That's really good advice from someone who obviously knows the game well. For faceoffs, that's what I had been trying, but I've read people saying to wait until the puck is about to hit the ice before flicking. It's retarded that there can be conflicting opinions on this.

On defense, I understand your point when you're playing with people who know how to play defense. But I've seen a ridiculous amount of passes that cross right infront of the net for an easy tap in on the other side. If my defensemen aren't stopping that, somebody has to.

On the attack, I try to spread the puck around. I do think it's easy to sometimes try too hard to get the perfect set up and then just end up getting the puck poked away. More shots on goal equals more scoring chances. This isn't to say don't pass. If a guy has a better shot than you, give it to him. But if nothing is open, just fire it in. Maybe we'll get lucky.

Cool, I'll jump on and add you in a minute. As far as notifications, I wish there was something like this, but really, the best we've got is the new NXE feature that tells you people on your friends list are playing that game. This is why we had to set up the CAG Hockey Night...because it was impossible to link up with people otherwise.

Awesome! Sorry man, I knew I left people out. I'll add you to the list!

Hey guys i made new club if any one is interested. For the east coasters.

East Coast Cag is the club name. Im trying to get down a better scedule. That way we can actually play some games. Just let me know if you guys need a invite.

that makes sense...

The big problem with this game, is that when your playing forward the camera will randomly zoom in when your in the offensive zone and its hard to see where people are. I mainly play defense so I dont have to worry about that all that much

I totally agree with that. While it's not really random, the zooming and spinning camera is worthless. It zooms in once you get close to the net, and you can't see if there's an open man 5 feet away from you. It starts spinning when you get past the net. It's disorienting as hell, and it makes it really hard to even tell who has the puck.

I was on Friday night. Played some C and RW. CAG Hockey night seems to be working out great. I hadn't noticed that you guys had been doing this for a couple of weeks already.

slickkill77 - Yeah, that camera thing sucks. Sometimes you're forced to make blind passes. When you miss, you come out looking like an ass.

Seems like a lot of people are in this thread right now. Maybe we could get some sort of pickup game going?

I don't know if it would work but I'm available.

Choose the classic camera then. It's far enough away to where you can see more of the ice, but low enough to where you can see see which part of the net to snipe. For defense, Overhead camera is the best. In other words, the BAP cameras are junk.

As for passes tat go in front of the net, its amazingly stupid how hard it is to stop the pass. You can stand in the path of the puck, but it you won't always intercept the pass. Most of the time, you have to check the person that's standing there, but you run the risk of a cross check (because the game seems to call it more when you check a guy without the puck). And, like I said earlier, with so many bodies in front of the net, it can be hard to actually get to the guy to hit him.

Well, yeah. Because of the fact that there's no such thing as "total stick control" in this game (and often times, you'll skate right past the puck without picking it up), you have to make adjustments. This is why I dive and block the pass. It's just the easiest way to stop it.

Thanks for the heads up N8. If you want, we could have a pick up game later on and you can work on the face offs. Also You can put me as a Switch Defernse man since we have SO many D lol. I like to pass alot as well, BUT if there is a open lane i usually tend to shoot it and hope someone taps it in or what not.

amg, do you have a mic?

As for invites, the GMsare Pure Apathy, FrankySox, S3anamI, n8rocker82, and myself. Just message any or all of us.
We still good for this Friday? I am SO ready to have some hard hitting checks out there!
Yep, definitely on for Friday, December 12th from 10 PM EST - 2 AM EST. And actually, a CAG by the name of Mr hockey66 was looking to start a little earlier for those of you on the east coast.

I think he was wanting to start playing at 8 PM EST, so any of you who might not be able to stay till 2 AM (or if you just want to have a good, lengthy hockey night), you're welcome to start some games with him at 8. I just can't really see myself playing for 6 hours straight, haha

Thanks for the code, Glock! I'm glad Mr. Hockey is getting on early. I am getting offline at 8 Pacific/11 Eastern to watch something on TV, so I will play with whoever's on prior to then as well as after the show ends.

I'm enjoying staying home and chilling with CAG game nights. 'm getting too old to be going out all the time, plus I need to save my energy for when my friend comes home on leave from the Marine Corps on Monday. He expects me to be able to keep up with him when we go out drinking, so if you guys don't hear from me again after this weekend, it's probably because I'm comatose.

I had no idea you guys had a team!

Where are you guys ranked at right now? and whats the team name? and record.

I have a groupful of guys who could help you guys out, were good at this game, we were once a division 6 team. :)

Played a good game last night with a couple of unknowns and there method for puck handling was very good. They had two people behind the net, watching the play then feeding it to open players to take shots. We probably held the puck in there end for about 6 minutes just doing this. I thought I'd add it in so maybe we could give it a go and see how it works out.

Also, thanks for the code glock! :D
I'm planning on playing this week. Also EA released the code to unlock the 3rd jerseys in the game:

FINALLY! Can't wait to see these! Thanks for posting that!

This isn't really about rank or record. We just play to have fun. Especially considering sometimes we have multiple games going on at once, worrying about "how good" each person is really is irrelevant.

If you and your friends play the game with the goal of getting to the top of the standings and challenging the best teams in the world, then the CAG team probably isn't for you.

Hey Guys, longtime lurker (and podcast listener) first time poster. I have NHL as well on Xbox, and was wondering if you had room for another forward on the team? Playing online with random people has been painful. I want to get onto a team and have fun, with out the immaturity of some of the Live players.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure we still have room. As far as positions...nothing is really set with that. People usually just play the position they're comfortable with, and if we have an abundance of one position, we usually rotate.

I like to play center, but if I have a couple games where I can't win a faceoff and just generally suck, I usually take a backseat and play defenseman for awhile, haha :) I'll send you a team invite the next time I get on though.

I just need to rant real quick. I just played a Random OTP game. The guy picked Left Defense and kept playing Right Defense. I didn't pick RD like I automatically do, I sorta let everybody pick what they wanted then said "hey RD is open!". So as we are playing all this dude is doing is rushing the puck up the ice by him self. Sure he would pass it to a few players, but, He always freaking felt the need to shot it when it got passed to him even though I was open. I didn't have one single shot the whole game. So I was pretty pissed off. On a side note, I MIGHT try out a wing position this Friday to try out the new offense I saw to see how it plays out. The whole point of this rant was to say how I love playing with CAG's who know how to pass and shoot when the time is right. :D

Knowing how the sport is played is a very big plus when playing the OTP. This helps with so many situations. Maybe this guy you played with Vulcan, only plays offense and didn't want to play a defense position. Obviously I'm not defending this player, this just show how frustrating random players can be.

I think people are (A) selfish and (B) become accustomed to doing everything themselves from playing Be A Pro offline. That, and too many people (not CAGs, but in general) always go after the puck carrier regardless of which position they are playing.

I'm relatively new to hockey, but I know enough to play smarter than a lot of the general online populace in team play. Thankfully, the CAG team is smarter than the majority of OTP players. We might not win all the time, but we play the game properly as a team.

I think that you nailed it here. Especially the fact that people are used to doing it them selves first.

Yeah, I don't know near as much about hockey as I do baseball (or basketball even), but I also think I know enough to hold my own. I think just being a good strategist, and being able to recognize what the other team is trying to do to you, helps too.

I've even been employing a bit of a radical strategy on defense if I ever find myself in a 2-1 disadvantage. In basketball, you're taught to always stop the ball. But with hockey, you've always got the goalie behind you. But one of the deadliest things for a goalie (in this game especially) is a last second pass and one timer.

So, I'll usually just let the puck carrier go, and stick on the off man like glue. That way the goalie (thoeretically anyway...I can't guarantee the AI "thinks" like this) can focus on the guy with the puck, and if the off man somehow scores, it's my fault. I don't know. This may be common sense to most people, but I thought it was worth mentioning in case anybody ever finds themself committing to the wrong man :)

see, you say you don't know much; but that is text book 2-1 strategy. Let the goalie take the puck carrier you take out the pass. Then pray he doesn't pull a cheese goal on you.
see, you say you don't know much; but that is text book 2-1 strategy. Let the goalie take the puck carrier you take out the pass. Then pray he doesn't pull a cheese goal on you.
Haha, thanks. To me, it just amounts to common sense :D I figure if the goalie can't hold his own 1 on 1, he deserves to get beat (although I've seen that happen plenty in this game too, haha).

I guess I called it "radical" because it feels strange letting the "man with the rock" just go unabaded to the goal. Old habits die hard, I guess

The only problem is we always seem to get screwed by "cheese" goals. Tie game late just to have a weak wrister bounce off the goalie and in.

I am also in the boat of not being all that good but having a great time playing with everyone.

Anyone up for a game any time today before the scheduled meeting time?

I don't have any classes today and I took off of work so I'm definitely using this day to relax and play some games. I'll def. be there tonight.

How does the hockey night work, I'm excited to lace up the skates and play. What time does it usually get going? I know I could search through the 40 pages to find the information, but... well... maybe this would be easier.
