NHL 09 CAG Team - CAG Game Night - Fridays @ 10 PM EST

I have family over this week, so I likely won't be able to (we just had a son born before Xmas so it's been kinda crazy). I'll likely be around for the next Friday though to start playing online. I'll PM the OP my info once I create my guy.
God I had some up and down games in goal yesterday. One game we were destroying the other team and I had a shut going. With 33 seconds left in the game my guys gave up a 3 on 0 breakaway and I gave up a goal.
Yeah, that's why I say it's not even fair playing goal if you don't have dedicated defensemen who actually play their position. I had some of the shittiest games with randoms the other night. Several defensemen who would get the puck off a faceoff (that I won) in our own zone...and then they'd try to take it all the way up the ice themselves.

It's times like these I wish you could check your teammates. Then, of course, they get hammered, which results in a 2-0/3-0 breakaway for the other team. If they try this little stunt more than once, I'll just go offside and stand there. I figure if they're going to ruin my time, I might as well ruin theirs.

I don't get people's refusal to play defense. If you don't want to play D, back out and join a new game...or just play 3 on 3 games so you're guaranteed a forward spot. I guess it's no different than other assholery that goes on on Live, but it's still annoying.

Moving to a positive note, can't wait for tomorrow! Ready to get back to CAG hockey and play with people who understand the game. Time to kick some ass!
2.82 era
LOL... You mean GAA. Earned run average is baseball. :p

I can play today. Tomorrow, Reign game; Saturday, Kings game.
O wow, I don't know why i put earned run average. Guess I'm just ready for baseball. Well my era would be 0.00. yea I meant GAA
Haha...I didn't even notice that. I just thought you were a damn fine pitcher and you thought we should know ;)

Matt, throw me a message if your on tonight. I don't get home till about 2 to 3 cause of my uncle's hospice care. Tomorrow I might have to be on early cause we have been heading down to the aunts (three houses away) to check on our Uncle. I miss playing with CAG. Also congrats on the new baby lordwow and everybody have a Happy New Year (by starting it off right and playing NHL with your fellow CAGS this friday! lol)
Wheres Wpark? He needs to play again ;)
he stopped playing OTP because he thinks people don't play enough D and thinks too many teams can score easy bitch goals...

Well, I just turned my 360 on for the first time in a week and I have been greeted by the beautiful red rings... I have the Best Buy protection plan so I should still be able to play tomorrow night, as long as they have some Elites in stock I can just get a new one after work tomorrow.

I'll probably be on tonight around 10 if anyone wants to play. I still need to get to 20 games so I can update my guy a little.

First time I'm playing in about 2-3 weeks since the last real CAG game where we played late.

About Defense, I love playing it. If anyone wants to take a wing over D I'm all for it. I know nate and I think Matt like for all of us to rotate center every once in a while so I usually grab a wing position without noticing.

I do like to play RW though as well but I'll switch if anyone wants to play up. Just speak up in the position grabbing chaos screen.

Hey guys! Great unofficial CAG Hockey Night last night. That was a nice warm up for tonight, especially considering we even won a few games. The last couple games were hilarious. It was really weird being treated as the "dominant team", and watching the other team give up and start doing the crazy shit that we usually do.

Since Matt won't be able to be with us tonight, I created something that he can take with him to the game (maybe make a nice t-shirt or a banner out of it) :)

And here's something for one of our more accomplished CAGs :D

REMINDER:

CAG Hockey Night #6 - TONIGHT! 10 PM EST - 2 AM EST!

Be there...and maybe, just maybe, you'll be immortalized with an amazing graphic of your own someday! ;)

I've been practicing offline with my franchise team, does anyone have any suggestions on shooting, namely my shots always seem to go wide left or right, I guess I'm pushing the analog stick over too far. I'm just having trouble skating/shooting at the same time without losing the puck to a defender.

Well, when the game first came out, the shot accuracy was way too high, and people were able to nail corners from behind the blue line. Then, EA issued a patch, and now shooting high/wide is fairly common. Since you're playing franchise, I'm assuming you're using pro players, so they should have decent shot accuracy. Obviously, it's going to vary depending on what kind of player they are, but one thing you could try is not even touching the left stick when shooting.

I've missed so many wide open easy shots because of trying to be too fine with it. Granted, this method will cause you to aim right at the center of the net, and often into the goalie, but maybe you'll get a five hole, or a deflection off his pads and in. AI goalies misplay a ridiculous amount of shots in this game, so at least it ups your chances.

As for protecting the puck, if you hold the A button while skating, you'll hold it away from the defender. This doesn't really guard you from being checked, but it makes it harder for them to poke at the puck.

I've got more tips, but they mostly apply to BAP and your created skater. When playing with pros, their skills are already pretty high, so really, you just need to practice, and get more comfortable with the game.

Thanks, those tips all help a lot. I played through the tutorial obviously, but there's no really in-depth tutorials unfortunately. I've been working on deking and stuff, but I hadn't even realized about the A button.

Ha Ha, that's to great Nate. Sorry I left so abrubtly. Not sure if anybody heard me say i needed to take care of an emergency. Uncle passed away and now I'm just so, i don't know honestly. :(

I do know I will be taking my aggression out on the other team tonight. Also that one team we played got ALMOST 180 hits. Damn Llyod Banks!

Oh yah, like the Kings Matt? :p

Ah, that sucks man. Yeah, I heard you say something about an emergency, but I just figured your wife had had enough and was beating you or something, haha. Seriously though, my condolences to you and your family Gary.

As for Lloyd Banks and the Cottonpickers (that was the same team wasn't it?), they ended up with 246 hits on us. They were at 153 after the 2nd period. Yes, for those of you doing the math at home, they had 93 hits in the 3rd period! But we also had 54 shots in that game, and beat them 3-1, so I'll take it! :)

I didn't see how many penalty minutes Banks ended up with though. But he looked more like Carlton Banks than Lloyd Banks. Here's hoping we run into those douchebags again tonight.

Im coming on, hope I catch you guys in the menu. I hate waiting :(

Would've been on earlier but the Flyers were playing and my neighbor came over to watch. Just won in a shootout so that's good.

Good times last night, especially our last win.

Early on I figured out I switched my mic to mute because nobody was answering me, so I wasn't talking in the first few games I played.

I'm going to draw up some play diagrams that we could potentially use. Bascially because I'm totally bored right now.

I also noticed we do much better when we have 3-4 people as opposed to 5-6. But having 5-6 people is more chaotic and fun so I'm not opposed to that either, lol.

Yeah, definitely some good games last night. We did do better with less people toward the end, but at the same time, I don't think the team was necessarily "going for the win" when there were 6 of us out there...especially when most of us were in net for the first time ever. I think we were mostly just having a good time, which is fine by me too.

But after being thrown to the wolves and having to play goalie, haha, I think I found my new favorite position. I'm going to work at it to make sure I can stay respectable, but getting a shutout in my 3rd game ever is pretty decent. I had joked with Gary before about learning goalie so we wouldn't have to deal with as many cheese goals as the AI gives up, but I never expected that strategy to actually work. You guys were ferocious on D though (with some surprising help from the AI). I only had to make 15 saves in that last game to get the shutout.

Right now, my goalie rating is an A-, with a 1.82GAA. But that might not mean anything when we run into one of those ridiculous teams that exploits the hell out of cross ice passes and glitch goals. That will be the true test. I'm going to keep practicing throughout the week, but if this keeps up, we could be on to something! :)
playing goal is great... not very difficult as long as you don't move around too much.
Haha, that's exactly what I said. A lot of people I see online just flop all over the place, and all it really does is put them out of position. I just make small movements and count on their aim sucking. :)

My only objective is to at least play as well as the AI goalie...which really doesn't seem that difficult, considering all the bleeders they let through.

You did DAMN good as Goalie Nate. I give you alot of props for even getting a shutout. Some of us just arn't meant to be goalies *coughcough Sean and my self coughCough* :D

But I was also surprised how well the AI D played also, not trying to take away from you Nate But we usually get SHIT AI D. I'm up for a few games again at 10-11 tonight if anybody else is. I need to get at least one goal or even an assist (which I did last night). Matt left so abruptly so I wonder if he is pist off or not. Matt, are you pist off?

Ok, heres a play I drew up that works well when their defensemen over commit to whoever has the puck. You can see the video a few pages back of this play working, I just altered it a bit to give the center options to pass. I realize we may not even do these at all but I needed something to do at the Colts-Chargers game halftime and Im just posting it now. Basically the left Defenseman (or right D, depending on the side) is the important person in the play as they have to pass back to the center at a good time so he can can see anyone open from that corner. It's a fast moving play. I also realize it's hard to do with a lot of players as everyone moves to open area's, so this would only really work with 2,3, or 4 players.

Ignore my shitty paint skills, and the eraser lines everywhere.

And of course, what we tried to do last night, with our new goalie added:

back on the subject of goalie. Play an entire game and didn't move and had a shut out! the goalie is actuall pretty good just moving left to right don't use the joystick to make hime use blockers and glove. Just let it hit ya in the chest!

Hey guys , I have a quick question: When I'm playing online via wireless, I get a ton of lag but when I wire up I'm fine. Any ideas?

Haha, that's awesome dude! Now if only we could get the other team to cooperate for that Flying V. I've been playing around a lot on goalie today. It hasn't been as "magical" of an experience as last night, but I'm starting to get a better feel for it. I seem to have games where I stop everything, and then games where everything just goes by me.

I played one game with randoms earlier, and I had to quit after giving up 3 goals in the first period (granted, their defense wasn't helping much). "Learning" goalie isn't really an option with the asshats that occupy Live. I had some dumb hick telling me to "git ayout of herr". So, I'll probably just practice offline for now.

This is definitely an interesting experiment. I enjoy scoring goals, but my main goal (if you'll excuse the terrible pun) is helping the team win. We're only what...70 games under .500? We can still turn it around! I'm thinking playoffs! :)

Haha...using the Pong strategy I see ;)

Yeah, wired is better than wireless...

Ok, wiseass comments aside, uh, try changing the channel your router operates on. Maybe you'll get a smoother connection, less interference, etc. Use www.speedtest.net to make sure you're running at optimum speed. Unplug your modem/router and give yourself a fresh connection. And last but not least, call your ISP and bitch about wasting money on a service that doesn't even work properly. If none of that works, learn to love your ethernet cable. ;)

Vulcan, I am not pissed. Everyone was quitting, so I did, too. I wasn't feeling so great, so I got off Live altogether.

Anyway, I posted this in the NHL thread in off-topic, but wanted to post it here as well:

I got back a short while ago from the Kings game. What a great time. I've been to many ECHL games this season, but none of them could compare to seeing the Kings play the Philadelphia Flyers in the sold out Staples Center.

I was up in the 300's, but I had a perfect view of the ice. My seat was right in between the blue lines, with the center line basically being parallel to my groin, LOL. It was an awesome game. The Kings struggled in the first period and part of the second, but came back to make it a very competitive game.

It ended up going to overtime tied at 1 goal a piece. No one scored in overtime, and in the shootout, Frolov and brown scored to give the Kings the victory. It was their first in 6 games wearing the alternate jerseys. Jon Quick, who has a 0.79 GAA and .969 save percentage in his last 5 games, looked amazing, stopping a penalty shot and saving what would have been a sure goal by trapping it between his legs behind himself while on his belly.

We were seated above the commentators' area, so we had a direct view of Bob Miller and Jim Fox. I actually saw Miller talking to someone right outside the entrance to our section while I was returning to my seat during the second intermission.

I got some really good pics, but they're on my friend's camera. I'll share those when he uploads them.

I should be on next Friday guys, though I'm still a complete noob at this game, but I'm much better at being a defenseman than a winger or center.

I thought I'd put out my new Sig. :D

Can't wait to get to Friday already. Probably one of the few days of the week I look forward to anymore.

Nice, the MLB 2k series sucks a fat one.

And yeah, it seems like smaller teams are easier to score points with. The game with nate, emg, and myself, we put all sorts of hurt on the other team, even though they stopped trying after we put three on the board, and we couldn't even talk to each other. It also seemed like playing behind the net in the offensive zone led to really good scoring chances.

Ok, so my goalie research is showing that either my skills improve the later it gets, or that people who play late just suck. I decided to brave the elements (see: Live retards) and play another game with randoms around 3:30 AM EST. Of course, I was sure to change my name to "IM LEARNING GOALIE" first, haha. :) It was a 3 on 3 matchup, but luckily, the other team had a human goalie as well.

My team ended up winning 2-1 in OT. The goal I gave up came in the 2nd period and was pretty weak on my part. I was partially screened and flailed for the puck at the last second, missing it entirely. I gotta hand it to the other goalie though because he faced 32 shots and only gave up 2 goals. He actually ended up getting the #2 star. I faced 18 shots and stopped 17. Good save percentage, but not really the biggest test.

Again, I was blessed with a team that was brutal on D, but considering the way the CAG team hits, I think we can achieve similar results. We never really get ridiculously outshot by the other team. Sometimes we struggle to score, but usually what kills us seems to be AI related (soft D, swiss cheese goalie, etc.) Hopefully having a human goalie can help with that.

n8 I see your shutout with a shut out of mine own...finally.:D

16 games in goal, 2.58 GAA, .875 Save %, 1 SO

Nice man! Definitely solid stats there. My OT win from last night appears to have not even counted. I noticed I didn't get a grade at the end. That's freakin lame. Of course the one where I was yelled at and forced to quit counted. Thanks EA :bomb:

EDIT - Thought I'd throw this in for fun. In honor of my favorite goalie of all time, I created a Dominik Hasek CAP and was practicing with him last night. Here's a really nice save on some guy that the D just let waltz infront of the net.

The odd part about my shut out was that I got an A+ for position score as usual, A for team play and B- for stats????? How did I get a B- when I pitched a shut out?

As for my skater my position score is an A, team play is up to a B and stats are still lagging with a C-

Just got my 2nd shutout. It was a 1-0 2OT marathon. 2.41 GAA, .881 Save %, 2 SO

Well, moojuiced and I played 3 games earlier tonight. Since it was just the two of us, I went back to center. We lost the first game 4-0, due to crappy goaltending and ridiculously soft D. The next game we were down 1-0 after the first, but stormed back to win in OT, 2-1. We found ourselves in the same situation in the third game, down 1-0 after the first period. Within the first 5 minutes of the 2nd, I scored off a nice slapshot from the point, and later hit moojuiced with a pass in front of the net that he buried.

The game should have ended there, but once again crappy defense reared it's retarded head and one of our defensemen left the backdoor wide open for a cross ice pass tap in that the goalie had no chance on. Again, we go to OT, the other team is really putting heat on us, but somehow we sneak a slapshot by the goalie to get the 3-2 win. I don't know how we won that last game. I didn't win a faceoff the entire game (23-0). We suspected the 99 glitch, but I was getting jump lag all night, so who knows.

It would be nice if EA could patch everything and reset everybody's stats/records though. I'd gladly start over if I knew I was in a fair fight. Amazingly, dating back to our final game from Friday night, the CAG team has won 3 of it's last 4 games. I'm telling you guys...playoffs. I'm talkin bout playoffs, haha

n8 bad news. Apparently getting your pro card (20 games, C Avg) as a goalie doesn't give you any attribute points at all. Not sure if you were aware of that but its kinda deflating. I have 21 games played and a B avg and it didnt give me anything

That's because your card advancement works for both skater and goalie. I.E. if you level up your skater after 20 games, you can level up your goalie as well without ever having played the position.

Just an FYI: the Reign have Friday games on the first, third, and fourth Fridays of January and February. I will be available this Friday, but not for all those other Fridays.
