NIN talk: Trent Reznor - Golden Globe Winner, Oscar Nominee!

Just got it and I'm only on Down In It but this sounds extremely great. This is one of the best remastered albums I've ever heard. Not only is the sound levels improved, but the mix is incredible. The programming fades from right to left, the bass is heavy and it all sounds crystal clear. I know Trent is an audio perfectionist but I didn't expect this to sound THIS amazing. Bravo.

Does the remix actually change the songs for the better? This is the NIN album I listen to the least by far. Don't know why either - I used to LOVE it.

Yes, I mean, this is still the same album that it always was, it just sounds a hundred times better and therefore does make me like it more.

Only issue is that the Midnight Express sample from Sanctified is missing.

I Was never a big fan of Pretty Hate Machine, but goddamn the remastered versions kind of give me a new enjoyment out of it. As in it's been years since I last listened to it and hearing it on my speakers it just feels like leaps and bounds over the original with how much care was put into it.

Exactly how I felt. I don't remember the last time I listened to that album before this remaster. Even when I was listening to a ton of NIN leading up to my Lights In The Sky show, I skipped PHM entirely.

Also, when I was listening to Something I Can Never Have in my car the other day, I heard these awesome bass swells throughout the entire song. Was that there before? I've never noticed it.

Whats even more interesting is this tweet from Trent:

"Just saw and heard some work-in-progress footage from the final NIN shows last year and it managed to make me miss touring!"

On one hand he says work-in-progress footage, so maybe we'll get a DVD or official NIN mixed torrent. And on the other, he misses touring. Good sign for at least HTDA! Although I think he has said that he would like to tour with them eventually.
Just had to rub salt in the wound didn't you?
nah if i wanted to do that, i would have mentioned he also debuted for the first time ever live metal, i'm afraid of americans, gone still...opened with home/somewhat damaged, played the fragile and soundchecked la mer (which I could hear!)

;)

They professionally filmed the entire last leg of the tour besides the 08/23/2009 show at Webster Hall (since they wanted a crazy amount of money to film there). Hopefully they will release more material soon. Maybe a documentary or a full show with bonus highlights from other shows (Peter Murphy singing Reptile while hanging upside down from the roof :bouncy:) or even an And All That Could Have Been type best of.

I can't imagine him and Mariqueen full time touring now that they have a kid. Maybe a few shows when the full length HTDA album drops.

COLD! COLD AS ICE!

I Heard him doing a sound check of I'm Afraid of American's, but that's the closest I've gotten to hearing that one.

Though I wouldn't mind another NIN concert DVD/Blu sometime in the future.
Worth a double post, http://prettyhatemachine.com/ has some new concert footage from that period along with wallpapers and stuff from the leaked Closure DVD.

The prettyhatemachine site is so awesome. I was checking out the 'tour dates from nin tour history' and realized that I went to almost every version of the 'PHM' tour (except the European leg).

The 'Theme For Tetsuo The Bullet Man' is also great. Thanks for linking it... I would have missed it.

Watching a live interview with Trent Reznor on the New York Times website, Trent just announced he's scoring The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo due out in December.

Also, he said he is not done touring all together, just done with NIN, but he's not saying NIN will never tour again.

Alan Moulder is remastering the multi-tracks for The Fragile and they will make a surround sound version in the Spring, no ETA on the release besides this year.

It's so far away

Of course the last question to the audience Q&A was going to be about Tapeworm haha. And his comment about working with Manson was great. "We had our differences before but I'm an adult, I wear suits now."

He'll always have to answer that Tapeworm question, mark my words. Now I'm eager for The Fragile surround sound rerelease. I Kinda figured it was scrapped since if I remember right, it was planned for 10 year anniversary to be released and never heard much if any news about it besides slight rumblings.

I was there! I was probably on camera when the tapeworm guy asked his question, I was only a couple seats away. Mariqueen was a row ahead of me. Is it available to watch online anywhere?

I thought I had already heard about the Dragon Tattoo soundtrack, I went and looked it up and found this:

His next project of course is The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, and I’m sure that movie needs a soundtrack, too. You seem like you might be a good candidate…

[Benevolent pause] Well, we’ll see how that plays out.

Thank you for posting that! I was on a plane heading back from Vegas while the Globes were on so I missed all of it. Do you know if they interviewed Trent on the red carpet?

After watching Social Network last week, I have to say the score is VERY strong.

Reznor has a bright future ahead scoring films if he so chooses to fully engross himself in it.
Wow, I'm getting a terrible download rate. Currently at 5 kb/sec for one of the Fragility 1.0 shows.
I Was going at 12 kb/sec average last night.

I have to imagine Trent has this one in the bag. It's just so different than the other nominees and really stands out. In my opinion, Tron Legacy got royally fucked. Daft Punk should have been nominated for their score, and would be the only one to give Trent a run for his money, but since Tron isn't a traditional Oscar movie, it was overlooked. And to not nominate Tron for Best Visual Effects but to nominate Iron Man 2 is completely beyond me. But as long as Trent wins, everything will be ok with the world.

Maybe Tron Legacy came out too recently? I haven't seen it but I'm a fan of both NIN and Daft Punk.

to any surround sound fans: the new batch of King Crimson DVD-A is out... In the Court of King Crimson 6 disc set came out in November, as did Islands and In the Wake of Poseidon, Lizard came out a couple weeks ago. Unfortunately my two favorite KC albums haven't been mixed yet.

I know this is slightly off-topic but I figured I'd put it here since the music is *somewhat* similar and Trent did some surround work.. which was pretty good.

Not that off topic since Adrian Belew has worked with Trent many times in the past.

Nine Inch Nails, The Downward Spiral ("Mr. Self Destruct," "The Becoming;" 1994)
Nine Inch Nails, The Fragile ("Just Like You Imagined," "The Great Below;" 1999)
Nine Inch Nails, Ghosts I–IV ("3 Ghosts I," "4 Ghosts I," "7 Ghosts I," "10 Ghosts II," "11 Ghosts II," "14 Ghosts II," "16 Ghosts II," "21 Ghosts III," "25 Ghosts III," "27 Ghosts III," "30 Ghosts IV," "31 Ghosts IV," "32 Ghosts IV," "35 Ghosts IV;" 2008)

I think it has more to do with it being tied to a shitty movie than anything else. I mean Trent's score isn't close to a traditional Oscar soundtrack but it was tied to one of the best movies of the year and the music had a direct effect on the movie
Try to imagine the scene at the end with Justin Timberlake calling from the police station without The Gentle Hum Of Anxiety playing over top of it. That song made that scene so powerful

Yeah, you're right. Usually the nominees for Best Score come from movies that are nominated for the major categories. I hate that that's the case, but it's true. Trent's score definitely had a major impact on the movie too. The movie wouldn't have been as good without that score.

Unlike most people, I loved Tron. So it pisses me off personally to see that it got shafted in categories I believe it should have been nominated in. I still think the score should be nominated as it fit absolutely perfectly with that movie.

Not to take away from the Reznor thunder, but I agree. The movie was so-so, but the score added so much more to the movie that it's one of the few I can listen to and imagine the movie playing in my head. Plus it's a good listen all it's own as well.

If you had told me in 1991 that the dude in the cage in the Head Like A Hole video would eventually win an Oscar I would have thought you were insane.
