Nintendo 3DS - General Discussion Thread

Ah, so it is now May. I wonder how long until it is considered "late May" (eShop is released then). I sure do hope the selection will have at least one game I would be interested in.

Oh wow, it is may. Hopefully Nintendo puts out 3DS point cards when the shop comes out (kinda paranoid giving Nintendo my credit card info after Sony's fuck up).

I hope they don't treat us like worn out whores in terms of VC content like they have lately with the Wii.

Though I do feel like a whore spending $40 on Zelda: OoT.

Hopefully they don't putz around with the old school content available online like they did with the Wii. My psp is already capable of playing GB, GBA, NES and SNES games so I don't want to hear any excuses from Ninty aside from licensing and I'm more than willing to spend money to play this thing more.

Exactly. There is no excuse that they wont be able to push tons of stuff out, unless they remake it in 3D (then I can see a delay). If they are doing straight GB ports, then there is no reason they wont be able to get tons of great stuff out. I mean hell there is no excuse they can't put shit out on the Wii but apparently they don't even care enough to bother anymore which sucks because it left us with games that we can't play.

That makes you the john. Link's the whore.

They better let us use the Wii/DSi Points cards! I have like 4 of those that I have no use for otherwise. The Wii where I started downloading stuff originally has been failing on me (with no way to transfer stuff off - hopefully with the Wii 2 I can do that) and because of that and the DRM issues I never bought anything for my DSi. I still have the 1000 points that came with the system at launch ;).

But I'd definitely be up for buying some unique downloadable 3DS titles, especially as I still have no games for my system.

I thought I read somewhere that the new eShop isn't using Points as the currency...it's a straight dollar-for-dollar exchange.

Sort of seems unlikely that the Wii/DSi Points cards would be accepted.

Well, if so that sucks and I will be buying very few, if any, 3DSware games.

If we have some way of transfering games from the DSi to the 3DS (which I thought was going to happen for sure) then maybe I'll just buy a few DSiware games with my points, transfer, then buy stuff sparingly from then on. I'd say never but if they come out with a killer 3DS app then I'd consider it. I'd still much prefer to use points, though, as I can always get those cheaper. If I have to use a CC and pay full price all the time, then that limits it quite a bit.

I guess I just assumed points woild carry over since they said they had the DSiware transfer feature - plus points cards are generally a way for them to make lots of extra money (people buying them as gifts, large numbers of them never getting redeemed, people not using all the points, etc). In a straight-up CC purchase model they may get more money per game (as retailers get a cut of the Points card sales), but they lose all those "perks".

Yeah, I heard that too. Nintendo Points are dead, I do believe. With Wii on the way out the door and the earlier DS models getting brushed off, we'll see Nintendo points fade from store shelves as well.

Not sure I feel good about this. The Galaxy games have set the bar real high and so I'm expecting a lot from this game.

Super Mario 3D will also make use of the gyro-sensor, and Miyamoto gives an insight into the design of the console itself. "Sometimes people ask why the 3DS isn’t double stick," says Miyamoto. "One is normally used to control the camera, but having the gyro sensor you can replace the analogue stick by moving the console, which is very intuitive."

It works fine with Steel Diver, but man you have to be willing to get into it Wiimote style and that isnt going to fly on a say a train.

Best Buy is actually already taking pre-orders for what they call the "Nintendo 3DS Cash Card".
Oh good. Points or cash is the same to me really. As long as there is a option to buy it in stores. I don't want to use my debit card because I am paranoid after Sony's fuck up, and I hate seeing tons of charges on my bank statement (not that it's a bad thing, but just an annoyance).
It works fine with Steel Diver, but man you have to be willing to get into it Wiimote style and that isnt going to fly on a say a train.
I was fine with Steel Diver. Those were like super short bursts and if you couldn't move around, there were alternate touchscreen controls. I wasn't thinking of it that way though since camera control like that doesn't seem practical. You would have to be standing up the whole time. Or maybe make a circle of chairs.

I'm guessing it would probably be tilt motion. That gets in the way of the 3D, which I want. Plus, Galaxy 1 & 2 didn't need a second joystick for a good camera.

With that said, I'm pretty sure they don't plan to mess this up.

Uh...no you can't. We've not seen what that's talking about despite having similar tech in other systems, and even if it worked, which it doesn't, it woudln't work well on a PORTABLE because you're tilting the screens too (even aside from the "3D" issue).

Still though the Jungle Beat/Galaxy team is incredible, so...

Just discovered something that really sucks about streetpass.

I was out yesterday and mid-afternoon I looked and got 10 SP hits. I greeted them all but I was too busy to do find mii or puzzle swap. When I got home later that day, I looked and at my gate there were 10 additional hits.

After I greeted the last 10, I immediately went to play find mii thinking I would have an army of 20 storming into the tower. I was so pissed when I saw that only the last 10 miis I greeted were going into action! :headache:

Even worse, after I finished find mii, I was only allowed to do puzzle swap with those same last 10 miis! :bomb:

So I essentially wasted 10 heroes and 10 puzzle pieces because I did not "use" the first 10 SP hits I got by immediately going to puzzle swap and find mii after I greeted them.

Words to the wise: GOT TEN? USE THEM!
Words to the wise: GOT TEN? USE THEM!
Yeah, I learned that early on. I only lost one opportunity Find Mii/etc. It really sucks you lost 10 before you learned this.
Sales in Japan of the 3DS have pretty much tanked, along with the games.
I'm sure the upcoming release of Ocarina of Time will give the system a happy sales boost. The launch titles give little reason to leap for a system purchase.

Zelda isnt that popular in Japan. Rocket slim 3 might be the first game to make an significant impact in Japan

Who knows what, if anything that means. The PSP outsold the DS in the United States for ages. It could end up doing really well down the road. Plus Nintendo can really drop the price if need be. Probably will by this fall if it's not selling too well.

I have mixed feelings about the system, since I hate "3D", but on the other hand, I love that it has real, activation-free games you can actually buy, and that it's a real, dedicated gaming system in a time when activation and terrible phone games are popular among the punditry.
You're using a random guy from Kmart to prove a point?

Ehhhh....
Random...

Either way, initial estimates are saying 3DS sold about 200k units in the US during the month of April. We'll know the actual figures Thursday. If true, less than 600k units sold in the US since launch, as the first week overlaps a bit with April.
You're using a random guy from Kmart to prove a point?

Ehhhh....
Err... I thought I was being clear that I have nothing to go on for the US other then what the kmart guy said about it, though he isn't exactly "random". He's the guy who runs the video game deals at kmart (nationwide), so you'd have to presume that he has some info about what is and isn't selling. Then again, this is kmart we're talking about, so I suppose anything's possible. ;) Anyway, no, I don't know anything about how sales are going in the US in general.

I don't know how it's doing in the US, other then what the kmart guy said, but I presume it's performing similarly here, if perhaps not quite as bad yet, and probably with a better ratio versus the PSP.
$250 without titles to entice, it's kind of no surprise. Had my circumstance been different, I would have waited on my purchase. I had my reasons for buying it now, though I didn't realize the game drought would bother me this much. I do want the eShop to come out promptly. Sometime soon in the next in the next 3 weeks!

With my rational side turned on, I wonder why we don't have a date this close to launch. Is this foreshadowing a delay? I certainly hope not.

Oh, I was just confused. I thought it was some random employee you were referring to. ;)

Arg, the idiot who wrote that article is making it sound like this is a good thing. I don't care if they accept CC's online for purchases - that's great. I just want them to accept existing Nintendo Points cards (and not make some new, incompatible, type of card). If that is not happening then I guess I will have to try to sell mine online before everyone moves on from the Wii and DSi. Blah...

I mean, was it really SO FREAKING DIFFICULT to remember that 1000 points = $10 dollars? I mean, like every point is 1 cent? Is that such a hard concept? Oh, it will be all so much more clear now that you can use a credit card . Idiot.
Exactly. It is less confusing then MS's point system
I think MS purposely had a lopsided conversion system. We associate 400 points with $4, but in their system it's $5. This way we feel we are paying $4 when we actually are using $5, thus spending more than we would think to. I don't know if that makes sense, but I would say it was a clever/sinister business decision.

Back on topic, it is still a mystery how the eShop will work out. Even though we should be close to its launch, we really do not know much about it.

I was completely removed from the gaming sphere when the Wii and DSi eShops were launched. Was it quietly released or was there more known about it before?

This video is a few months old, but I had missed it. Illustrates how the shop will be like.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OfbVRC0uvJQ

More about the eShop from this article I posted the other day: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/technology/video-games/8493624/Shigeru-Miyamoto-interview.html

"While it's unlikely Nintendo will be providing some of the cheaper, quick fire experiences that appear on smartphones, Miyamoto says that Nintendo are not looking to impose restrictions on third parties."

Does the eshop have demos of all the games? That's what I want to know. I couldn't tell from that video, though it looked like maybe? I saw what looked like a disc icon with a wifi signal symbol. Though that's a tad confusing if that's the icon for downloading a demo.
There hasn't been any firm date yet for E-shop has there? Are we still looking at "end of May"?
It seems by now we would get some sort of solid date. I'm counting on it getting delayed.

That's what I was getting concerned about. May ends in 3 weeks, you would think they would have some sort of press release or announcement about the launch day or anything about it.

I know it just came out this morning but did anyone happen to pick up Lego Pirates of the Carribean yet? Just wondering how the 3D is on it. The review I read for Lego Star Wars said it wasn't a good 3D showpiece.

I picked up my 3DS about a week ago but don't ahve nay games yet. Was waiting for Lego Pirates today and now am going to take advantage of Targets sale this week. I've seen a lot of people say Steel Diver is boring so that rules out that one. Is Pilotwings fun? I played the demo in Target and think the 3D looks great but wondering if it has good replay value.

Im waiting to hear about this game also since I too just recently bought a 3DS and don't really have much to play. I have been borrowing Shadow Wars from a friend and even though I am not a fan of turn-based games, I really like it. Give it a try even if you are not a fan of the genre.

This is what it feels like. Nevertheless, two GameBoy games have now been rated by the ESRB for the virtual console. There maybe reason to expect the eShop to materialize by the end of the month.

If the concept of Steel Diver interests you, I say go for it. Otherwise I wouldn't think it's for you. I saw the gameplay videos and knew I would probably enjoy it.

Cant wait for DoA Dimensions to come out, still undecided on BlazBlue 3DS (Might be good practice for the console versions)

Also, i heard from a gamestop employee who checked in the SKU system that the 3DS E-Shop cards were coming out on the 29th. (Plus theres some Nintendo Event next week)
