I don't know how, but I managed to get distracted and somehow leave my bag in McDonald's and I didn't realize it until too late. We were the last customers and they locked the door behind us, so I didn't freak out too much because I figured one of the employees (there were only two working that night) would have the decency to hold onto it for me since they knew it was my bag. And in case there was any doubt, my wallet was also inside.
Unfortunately, when I contacted them the next morning, they apparently had no idea what I was talking about and they claimed that I never left a bag there. At this point, I officially started freaking out because the bag had my wallet, my $1500 laptop, and I don't even know what else. I immediately got the police involved, but they were no help. All they did was badger me and accuse me of selling my laptop and making up a story about it getting stolen so my family wouldn't get mad (which makes no sense). After a lot of persistence, the police ordered the night manager to review the surveillance tapes and he said that they show me leaving with my bag. I demanded to see the tape but he refused and the police said there was nothing I could do. I then spoke with the day manager about the situation and he informed me that the cameras don't record anything after 2 PM and that it would've been impossible for there to be a video of my visit.
I fought like hell over this thing, but nobody would help me. I was living in a
very small town at the time; everybody knows each other and they look out for their own, so I couldn't get anybody on my side. Though, from what I am told, the police apparently searched the night manager's house after I told them that he was the one who stole the bag (I am still 100% certain he did). They never told me about it, though, so I don't know if it's actually true; this is just something that was relayed to me by a friend of his after getting into an altercation with the asshole at Vons.
And that was basically the end of it. The police never investigated further, McDonald's didn't care, and I had made a mortal enemy. Not sure what his problem was since he made off with a really badass computer and all of my money (although someone found my wallet and cards in a field at least). Slashing that

er's tires was the only thing capable of making me feel better. And of course, being the nerd I am, the thing I most regret losing is the tabletop RPG that I had created. The entire rulebook was on that computer. I also lost all of the music I had created. None of it was good, but it was mine, you know? The only songs I managed to get back were the ones that had been featured on
SongFight. In case you are wondering: it has been about six years and I have not gone anywhere near a McDonald's since then.
