Nintendo 3DS - General Discussion Thread

I always found leaderboards pretty boring. You are ranked 1378, congratulations
I think he's complaining about the lack of online leaderboards in so many of Nintendo's games.
I like seeing myself compared to friends so I agree.

Is it really that hard to understand? When I play a game with leaderboards, I'd like to know where I stand amongst friends or anybody really so I can see how good some people are and how much better I can do if I'm enjoying the game enough to keep playing it. Many of these games on the eShop would work well with them, but it shows their ignorance to only have leaderboards based on people I meet via StreetPass (aka nobody).

I think Nintendo needs to learn that StreetPass is not a suitable replacement for any online features, if a game has some of its features online and some offline only between players it becomes really pointless, just make it all online already. There are area's in the USA where you cannot get any street passes at all (even though mine is not one of those obviously) and some people don't have hundreds of dollars to travel to an anime or gaming convention.

It'd be really cool if you play a game online with someone, you'd get a chance of them visiting your plaza. I wouldn't say every person you play online with should, cuz then you'd instantly fill up and pass all the plaza stuff, but I think that would be a good balance/compromise. Probably too late to implement even in a system update though.

Just got Professor Layton for free through the promotion. It was either that or StarFox64 which I was never a big fan of. I've built up a nice little library by just getting a game every few months. Great little system.

After my sons month old 3DS XL quit reading games, I exchanged it for another one last week at Bestbuy. Problem we are having with it now is Netflix keeps saying it has to shutdown. I have deleted it and re installed 4 times now. I go to Netflix.com and activate it with the code and then bam...has to close again as soon as it tries to start. I had this happen on the other XL, but only 1 time. Is anyone else having issues with Netflix not working? Being that it's for my younger son, Netflix is pretty much a must have. If this continues, I may be forced to take it back and just get something else.

Are there any people from Japan in this thread? I would imagine that it's a cultural thing too. I bet Japan has a whole lot of people walking around with a 3DS. I think that most people in the US play theirs at home. I also think that younger people only turn them on when they're gonna play. Only hard core gamers care about street pass. At least in my area 4 out 5 tags I get have Fire Emblem which your average 3DS owner has probably never heard of.

My officemate's wife is from Japan, and they recently went over there to visit her family for two weeks. He brought his 3DS over with him, and filled quite a lot of the puzzles, and got through Find Mii. He noticed that it seemed a lot of people had them, and a lot of girls especially compared to over here (side note: they all seemed to play Animal Crossing).
I got more hits from one evening of walking down the Las Vegas strip with my 3DS on than the entire weekend I spent at Disneyland. Very strange.
I don't think its all that strange. You rarely see people bring games to Disneyland, and those that do are usually kids who don't have the street pass set up. Even seeing kids with it is rare since its so easy to have things get ruined or lost. With Vegas though you can get people driving through the strip who are heading to their hotel to check in, etc.

I remember when I was at E3 last year and my 3DS was blowing up with new miis showing up. It was cool at first, but upon realizing that I have a 10 mii limit before I can have more come in, I just gave up and ignored it. I didn't get very many people at comic con. I usually get a lot at Anime Expo though, which really isn't surprising.

It gets even worse when you have a bunch of people showing up in your streetpass enabled games. If youre really committed you just end up finding somewhere to sit for a half hour collecting all your stuff. I wish nintendo would increase the limit. Considering streetpass was made with mostly japan in mind, it seems silly to max out at 10.

It is a cultural thing, 90% of DS owners in the USA put in a game and play it. I actually think an adult would be more interested in the streetpass features as they have the means and know how to know how to use it. Nintendo needs to make an effort to set up special streetpass events at big malls in the USA in order to encourage people to use it. The demo units would be a good start as streetpass stations (if they advertised and set them up as such), so those who need passes could at least get them from the demo units, but I find the demo units to be hit or miss. Perhaps set up demo units with a Mii that has all the puzzles opened and all the pink pieces. There are some places in the USA where its completely dead for streetpasses but chances are those people could get to a store where a demo unit is located.

I think a lot of kids have streetpass turned on, however how much they are playing in public is beyond me. I find a lot of kids just hold the systems in their hands, and don't actually play in public, odd but true. I do think some stash it in their parents stroller or bag or something perhaps. I have gotten passes in malls and i have not seen anyone visibly playing a 3DS system, so it must be coming from somewhere stashed. I am very alert to these things too.

Out of my 26 streetpasses only one is a female. It is extremely hard to get a female here.
I find this odd, as I am a girl and I think its really easy to just stash your 3DS in your purse and walk around with it then check it when you get home. This would be much easier than a male who would have to either put it in a backpack or some kind of bag or pocket, and the pocket is really impractical for a system like the 3DS most of the time.

I don't think theme parks would be a hotspot, hotels would probably be really hot for 3DS streetpasses, with theme parks as you say there is possibility of the system getting lost or damaged easily though many kids again travel with parents who are pushing a stroller or wagon so there is somewhere to stash stuff while going on rides. So seeing people get passes at the park is kind of surprising but I will try it this summer, though I can say when I am at a park the last thing my mind is on is my 3DS.

That would pretty much negate the whole point of the pink pieces.

Well, the 3DS just needs to be on (and wifi on as well) to get tags, as long as they aren't playing an original DS game. Shouldn't matter if it is being played or closed.

and the pocket is really impractical for a system like the 3DS most of the time.

I carry both my 3DSs in my pocket with little trouble, though mine are OG models.

Yeah, pretty much. If I'm at the store with some time to kill, I'll run through the demo unit's street passes. It sucks hitting the same store time and again only to end up with no new puzzle pieces.

Maybe it's something the Nintendo reps can educate the sales staff on so that the demo units don't run so stagnant.

Nintendo should give special items or something in demo units. I graduated college last June and I would get 5-10 tags everyday and around half of them were girls, here in San Diego there also seems to be a lot of female users.

I got 10 streetpasses at an aquarium this weekend. I think it really helps to go somewhere with lots of kids. I noticed kids using 3ds as camera and i think that gets parents to let them take the 3ds with them. try to find a touristy area. Also 1 was from japan. I was happy to get an international one in my first week.

Sounds like entrapment. You know you have to tell us if you're a cop, right?

So, I bought some games off Gamestop's website since I was able to get a decent deal with coupons stacking, and one of the games was Mario Kart 7.

Was glad it came with a case, and even an unused PIN #, but the cartridge looks like it was chewed on by a dog or something, and sometimes it doesn't show up on my 3DS as playable and I have to turn it off then on again so it does. Would Gamestop exchange the cartridge in-store? Would be a pain to send it through the mail and risk not getting a case back.

Take the insert and instructions out of the case before you send it back.

But yeah, go to the store first. They should exchange it for you.

2 pretty sure cops don't have to do that

Thanks, I'll see what happens tomorrow.

I get a lot of street passes here where I live, I work at a supermarket so everyday I get a streetpass from the demo unit. Also I might get streetpasses from customers as well once during black friday I got 9 streetpasses. I have a coworker who brings his 3DS every time he comes in so both of us are helping each other out.
The thing I hate is when the other person doesn't have any puzzle pieces. Do the demos have any?
It can. It depends on if anyone goes through the Mii Plaza screens on the demo unit. This is why I do it if I'm killing time at the store.

I'm convinced there is no way to complete all of the puzzles. I met so many people at GDC that gave me pieces from new panels - I'm in the 500s for total pieces needed to finish everything and I've completed 5 panels already!

I think I just figured out why the unit at my Target hasn't been working with StreetPass... @_@

^at my target, if i try to go to the home screen, the system restarts and goes back into the demo. I assumed it had something to do with the demo unit, or target locking it down so that people don't make a mii named "Target" that says vulgar stuff. If someone knows how to fix that- let me know!

I saw a thread at GameFAQs that unlocks demo units. Hit the Power button and wait for the blue power light to flash. Approximately 5-6 seconds (the actual number is 5.86 or something like that) after it flashes, hit the Home button. The "Power Off" Screen should appear. Hit Home again and it will take you to the main menu. It actually does work.

demo units are the worst
you should be able to go on there and buy games and look up porn and everything
then bums would be all up in target on the 3ds

Yeah the puzzle game is rigged.
Say no to new puzzles. Every time you get a new puzzle on spotpass the misery begins again. Some have said they finished the puzzles at cons.

Walking around alone is no good as the more new pieces you get, the more likely you will get that same piece again. Someone said the new piece rate with coins is like 16%, and it's random so you're never guaranteed a new piece. If there were no duplicates, or a per day limit on duplicates it might be possible, even with those evil pink pieces.

I completed all the puzzles available when Otakon was here. Got a couple for the new puzzles since then, but I haven't gone to any crowded events.

You can do this with the phones at the AT&T Store. Or at least at the one near my house. 'Tis a good way to get multiplayer achievements if you don't have any friends with a Windows Phone. Now all they need to do is start carrying 3DS so's I can download games that don't have demos.

Hey guys. I was out today and stopped at Target and Gamestop, both places where I often get Streetpasses (rarely do I get any anywhere else, BTW). Neither store has a demo unit at all, I think, or if they do it's not Streetpass enabled. When I left Gamestop I looked and saw that the red battery light was flashing. I got home before it totally shut down due to low battery, but I didn't end up getting any Streetpasses. So I have two questions: 1. When the battery is low, does it automatically turn off Streetpass to save battery? and 2. If my 3DS actually ran out of battery and turned off, would I lose any Streetpasses I had gotten? I probably just had bad luck today but it made me curious.
There's a new FW update for the 3DS when I just tried to get into the eShop. I'm not going to bother with it for a few days. fuck that.
Mine downloaded super-quick, like less than a minute or two.
Mine downloaded super-quick, like less than a minute or two.
I don't trust it after last week's update nearly fucked up my 3DS.

"Some users received an error during the system update and were then unable to access the System Settings, Nintendo eShop, or Game Notes. This update prevents this from occurring again."

If this update bricked your 3DS, that would be insanely ironic.

Is a 3DS XL too big for a six year old? Thinking about getting one for my nephew and size and weight are holding me back from fully committing to the XL.
