Nintendo 3DS - General Discussion Thread
FYI, if you use the CPP on a game that isn't made for it, you will lose access to the R button. You can't use the R on the CPP in place of it.
Is this confirmed? I mean, I know it covers it up but I was wondering if the R button for the Circle Pad would be either directly over, or close enough, to the consoles R button so that it would actually still physically press the 3DS' R whilst the Pads' R is being pressed. A button pressing a button type of thing, so to speak.

*EDIT*

Just looked at some images and it looks like the R button would still be accessible, though it might be a bit of a stretch for someone with smaller fingers.

Does the Nintendo shop ever have sales? I kind of want to get more of Wayforward's games but I'm a bit remiss to spend significant money in their shop. Everything seems to be tied to the device instead of an account. When I transferred Might Flip Champs over from my DSi, I lost my save data.

The only time Nintendo had a sale on the WSC was when Sega reduced the prices of all of their Sonic games to 500 points from 800. So...I dunno. If you don't want to buy Mighty Switch Force, buy Pushmo instead. More content. A LOT more content.

It's not a matter of content. It's more a matter of when I get whatever the next (hopefully more comfortable) hardware revision come out I don't want to lose everything I've done. Also with the kind of backlog that I have amount all my systems I can't justify the price. I'm temped to start flipping again for point cards for my systems.

I asked this in the 3DS Ambassador Program thread, but do the GBA games seem *really* slow to load initially? Maybe it's because I'm using a 16GB SD card (possibly slow r/w) but it scared me the first time I had to wait at the black screen for so long for a game to start.

Glad the sound is bumped up, nice and loud through the speakers. Colors do seem slightly washed out, but that was probably the nature of the development for the originally unlit screens of the GBA.

The GBA games do take a bit longer (Im thinking a second or two) longer to boot than the other VC games, but nothing that would make me think the unit had crashed.

Im still using the 2GB card that came with the 3DS.

I keep getting error message 005-6535 when I try to download Swap Note. The code means invalid address or zip code setting. Every time I go into location settings I keep getting it takes me to a blank screen (the same color of the e shop background not a black screen).

I hope I don't have to send it in. I just had to do that with my Wii to get my VC games back.

EDIT

Fixed it. Just needed to change the location in the main 3ds menu to another country and confirmed in in the e shop. Then changed it back to the US in the main 3ds menu and confirmed it in the e shop. Funds still in tact.

Mighty Switch Force is pretty tight! Has a Mega Man feel to it.

Also put a good amount of time into Mario 3D Land and OMG! I'm in love!
-------------

What's up with the Mii Plaza, I have over 30 Mii's and I have no idea where I got them from. I played online once, and only gotten 4 people from street pass. Where do these others come from and what are they for?

The Mii's were probably sent to you via SpotPass, assuming you chose to activate that feature for the Mii Plaza whenever the new system update was downloaded. Basically, they're for nothing. You can't use them in Find Mii or for puzzle swap. I believe some of them come randomly, and others come from certain games you have SpotPass activated/play online with.

I finished Mighty Switch Force. Getting Par on every level took
3:31 according to my Activity Log.
It unlocked a
Special Title Screen, but not
Justin Bailey Mode. It really feels like it should be there.

Regarding the speed of booting, I fired up a VC GB game last night and it took longer than the GBA games. I presume this is because the GB emulator is more robust in that it supports save stating, ect. Mind you we are talking under five seconds, but it was still perceivably longer.
How long is "*really* slow"? They don't seem particularly slow to me, but it could just be a matter of perspective.
My GBA games take nearly 30 seconds to boot, give or take a second.

I bet it's this Kingston 16GB card. It's either the capacity (maybe the 3DS is parsing the entire card) or the speed. It's supposed to be a class 10, but I sincerely doubt it.

Maybe your card is a counterfeit/knock-off? I know that's a huge stretch but I've encountered it before. (Only with cards bought online)

Wow, that is totally crazy. Mine only take about 4-5 seconds to boot... I'm using a class 6 8GB Transcend card.

I use some off-brand Micro SD card with a 4 with a circle around it on it, and it takes about 7 seconds for them to load, maybe 8

I think it depends on how much you have on your memory card. I have a Micro SD 4GB Card on a SD card adaptor sometimes the load time for the Virtual Stuff takes around 2-8 seconds (I counted lol). I think having the memory card with a lot of data might take it longer. Just a guess.
If you are a fan of classic Tetris, the Game Boy version is up on the eShop.
I know its classic, but the DSi version (which goes online) is only $1 more than the original GB one and a much better value.

This is the offending SD card:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004TS1IG4

The reviews list lots of complaints about the Class designation, so I'm pretty sure that's the problem. However, it was the cheapest option (at the time - I wanted to upgrade before the Ambassador games) for the capacity.

My friend has an Ambassador 3DS and the identical SD card, so I'll do a side-by-side comparison with his later in the week. I don't want to go shuffling my content around to various SD cards to test if I don't have to. It's not really a big deal, and they still work, albeit starting slowly.

Don't know why they didn't go with the Tetris DX version instead. I think the Gameboy version is one of the best versions of Tetris but the black and white version seems an odd choice considering they released the DX version of Link's Awakening.

I'm not buying any DS version of Tetris for online play, as my network is too advanced for what the DS accepts unless that version supports whatever the 3DS does. Plus, I have the PSP and PS3 versions if I want more modern takes on Tetris and online play.

Looking at reviews for Tetris Party Live, it sounds like more of a paid demo for the full retail version.

With their policies about T-spin, I'm surprised that The Tetris Company allowed a classic version of Tetris to be released.

Well shit I just want Wario Land to come out on the eShop.. unfortunate Japan has been enjoying it for over a week and I thought we'd get it last Thursday. *big siiiiiiiiiiiighhhh* Instead we get Tetris which is great but my game has to wait it seems..

I got a 3DS for Xmas, and I'm very impressed. I passed on buying it at launch because I thought the 3D was a gimmick. I was wrong. It adds a different experience to games from my childhood (Zelda and Starfox) that I didn't think was possible. What an amazing piece of hardware!

Any games that are must haves on the 3DS? I have Starfox and Zelda, like I mentioned above, but are there any other stand outs that I can watch out for in the future?

Super Mario 3D Land
Mario Kart 7
Pushmo (through the e-shop)

Honesly, if you can only get 1, get Pushmo. It is absurdly well made, the puzzles are clever, and it is probably the single best use of 3D I've seen on the system. Oh, and it's like 7 bucks.

I can vouch for Pushmo as well, it's a great game. But you really think it's the best use of 3D that the system has to offer? Really?$ I'm going to have to completely disagree with you.

Granted you do say that "you've seen", I'm guessing you've played more than just a few games. Star Fox and Super Mario 3D Land(At times you forget it's there, but when the camera is in the right position - ie, from above, it looks super-cool) would be my top picks. Heck, Xevious even looks more impressive 3D wise. You're not the only person I've seen say that, but I'm curious as to why you feel that way. It doesn't really add anything, and while I'm halfway through with the game, I haven't seen anything that looks particularly snazzy, either. :shrugs:

Super Street Fighter 4 3D
Super Mario 3D Land
Mario Kart 7
Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars
Cave Story (if you haven't played it on PC)
Cut the Rope
Let's Golf 3D (not a great golf title but tons of content and is decent)

Thanks for the suggestions! I was going to pick up Mario Kart 7 and Super Mario Land asap. I'll take a look at the other games too. Sweet!

im against Streetfighter. Its horribly broken online and the game feels very clunky. Go for dead or alive dimension if you're out for a fighter. Otherwise the first party titles(mario kart 7 excluded unless you have patience) and a few like bit.trip and nano assault are fun.

Yeah I don't necessarily mean "ZOMG it's so 3D!", I mean in that, unlike most games where it is an added on bonus, the gameplay revolves around pulling and pushing things into the screen, so the 3D actually enhances the gameplay because the entire time you are changing the "depth" of objects.

Honestly, the "best" use of 3D (again, referring to gameplay that benefits from 3D) are the handful of sections in Mario where with the 3D off you can't tell where the block is supposed to be, but with 3D on you can tell right away (the sections that are almost optical illusions). They are borderline impossible [Iwithout 3D.

As for most "3D" 3D, I actually think the trailer for Dillon's Rolling Western wins. 2d layers seem to pop the best (for me at least) and that used a nice combination of 3d models with 2d menus to give a nice look. Really hoping Paper Mario comes soon for that reason: 2d sprites in multiple layers just seem to look nicer and "pop" more.

So my girlfriend's speakers on her 3DS completely died last night... she's only had it for about two weeks and is so gentle with everything she owns. She got the red Super Mario 3D Land Bundle. My first 3DS that I got back around launch had one speaker that never worked from day one. I really hope the second hardware version of the 3DS is made a lot better than the current one.

Right now my blue 3DS is working just fine(and I shake the crap out of it everyday for my playcoins), but having had 2 systems in the same household with speaker problems... kind of crazy and makes me a little nervous.

I actually enjoy Street Fighter a lot better than DOA and I've had it since launch. I even go back to that one a lot more. I can't wait for the new 3DS Tekken though.

Gotcha.

Totally agree with you on the 2D thing, though... That Paper Mario trailer is still some of the best I've seen, and pretty much every 2D game I've seen/played looks great. Mighty Switch Force looks really good as well.

Really digging Bionic Commando for virtual console that just came out today. Plays just like the NES version, which is a great game! Better than the arcade!

I haven't used the 3D much either. I only really got the 3DS personally for the games and the fact I never had a DS until this one. So the backwards compatibility is nice. I think the only time I've kept the 3D on for more than a few minutes at a time was when I was playing Xevious. Something about the 2d classics popping out a bit more just feels right, but not so much for the 3d games.

i use the 3D every so often but then I turn it off, naturally I use 3D whenever I play w/the AR card but it's really more a novelty and to show off to ppl who have never seened a 3DS before. I hope down the road soon they make a game that I'll really enjoy using the 3D effect for, til then...walk dog, feed dog, groom dog.

I almost always use it whenever I'm playing a game that supports it. I'll turn it off whenever I'm playing for a while, have someone else watching me, or if I just get tired of it... Other than that, 75% of the time I have the slider cranked all the way up.

If someone is watching me I turn it off, but other than that, I think it's always on unless I have a headache or something. (The 3D doesn't give me a headache, by the by.)
I am having fun with swampnote, I send drawings of Ponies to my three friends..... I like the 3DS
I too am enjoying it. Walked by a demo unit at a Best Buy today and got a couple of notes. It's cool that you can see exactly all the steps in the creation of the drawing, so not only do you get a picture but you also see it come to life.

I like that Im going to try to draw as much ponies so those 3 friends actually use the feature i enjoyed pictochat back on the fat ds and this is much better and more user friendly!

Just a heads-up....today's the last day (12/30/11) for filling out the Post-Play surveys (Club Nintendo) for the 10 free NES game downloads you recieved for being a 3DS Ambassador. Go get 'em 100 Club Nintendo coins now, if you haven't already!
