Nintendo 3DS - General Discussion Thread

It's because shiny black is more appealing at first glance than matte black would be, though the latter is better in most cases because it's less susceptible to fingerprints than the former.
I was adding to my point, so you don't need to keep responding to me. Agreed?
But you quoted me indirectly which is why I responded. I'm so confused.
Anyway. Doesn't really matter.

I've been holding off on a 3DS for a while (even when it was $145 at Target), but purple is my favorite color, and it comes out 4 days before my birthday...I mean, stars align?
It's because shiny black is more appealing at first glance than matte black would be
Well, that depends on who you ask. For me, it's the other way around. Aside from fingerprints (and dust), I think the shiny plastic looks cheap and I don't like having reflective surfaces everywhere. Oh well, I guess I could just spray-paint everything...

That purple is gorgeous but I told myself that if I didn't bite on the ambassador program that I'd wait until a hardware revision.

*prays for a 3DS Lite in purple*
I will never understand why they keep making handheld devices in glossy fingerprint-magnet finishes.
The handkerchief industry is more powerful than you could ever know.

I can imagine. If I wore suits, I would absolutely have a set of nice (and perhaps geeky) handkerchiefs. Maybe I could find/make an 8-bit one to go with my favorite tie.

Ever since Vader struck them down, man.
kind of sucks

new color = 99% chance no price drop at E3
They're currently already losing money on each unit at the current price. There will be no price drop.
They're currently already losing money on each unit at the current price. There will be no price drop.
I was told back in...February that they're sort of breaking even on each unit sold. I know they want the 3DS to sell more in the US but it doesn't seem like NOA gives a damn about the thing (Virtual Console, Virtual Console, VIRTUAL CONSOLE!!!) and it might take some corporate restructuring to get them to budge. It will also take more games that appeal to Western Gamers, like Madden, Call of Duty and others, along with a 3DS Pokemon. I also think Monster Hunter could sell on it if it had online play, which I think is the major hold up for it at the moment.

But right now, the economy is kinda bad, people are dropping out of the workforce and then you've got the iPhone. While the software is coming, it's still a bit of a drought the 3DS is in. Capcom promoting Revelations instead of RE6 would've been nice as well.

I've got 80 Puzzle Pieces to go until I have them all. Then I can fully devote myself to playing Find Mii II. Hopefully this weekend's Zelda Concert gives me all of the Pink Pieces I need, or at the very least, the ones I know I'll have trouble getting.
The review scores for Mario Tennis Open have been pretty mediocre so far.

I had high hopes for it. I'll still pick it up, but not at release.
They would have been better off if they patterned it after the GB/GBA titles IMO. Had they done that it would have been a Day 1 pickup, and a reason to turn it on for the first time since February.

I just entered the 3DS world as my wife bought one for me for my birthday. I personally was going to wait until the next model (which will probably be announced at E3 now knowing my luck) but I'm having a blast with Super Mario 3D Land and oh my god.......LoZ OoT looks great!!!!!!!!!

I got over 150 Street Passes at the Zelda Concert in Atlanta. I'm missing one pink puzzle in Mario Tennis Open. It is a great, yet terrible day.

- I am overflowing with Kid Icarus Weapon Gems
- Nintendogs, DOA, SSF4, MK7, SM3DL and RE:R have full Street Pass slates

Dang. Isn't there a 10-at-a-time limit? Or does it not work that way for the Plaza?

I'm a little embarrassed at how straight-up envious I am at your Street Pass adventure.

There is a 10 Mii limit. However, what you will quickly realize at one of these concerts is that while in the lobby, do not close your 3DS. EVER. You will get a constant stream of Street Passes for Miis, Puzzle Pieces and Game Data.

In addition to that, because of the sheer volume of Passes that I got, the 8-hour waiting limit for repeat passes broke. I got quite a few people twice. I now go to empty my games of Street Pass data.

Super Mario 3D Land: 3/3
Mario Kart 7: 10/10
Nintendogs+Cats: 10/10
Resident Evil Revelations: 10/10
Super Street Fighter 4: 10/10
Dead or Alive Dimensions: 8/8

Not to mention the 100+ Gems I got for KI:U alone.

As for the Concert itself, we got 3 Encores instead of the usual 2 as well.

Do you mean that the 10 pass limit is only while it's in sleep mode? IE, keep it open and it'll let you get as many passes as are available?

Yeah, you open up the Street Pass Plaza, get 10, do your stuff with those, click the arrow, repeat. It was just 2 hours of non-stop street passing for me before the Concert.

wow thats a crazy amount of streetpasses. I was close to 80 passes when I did the 24 hr leap year Disney Day...that's probably my best. I tried to free up my streetpass data with games throughout the day though so it wouldn't be at the max. Plus I love DoA fights...

I'm expecting to score big on Street Pass during ComicCon this year. Last year was pretty good and that was close to when the 3DS first came out. I'll also be dragging around my Vita, though I don't know if it will do me much good. I guess I'll see.

Not to change the subject or anything, but does anyone have any idea of when the Nintendo Network will be released? I've heard every date from March, to May, to June, and now that it'll be released this Fall with the WiiU.

Nintendo made a smart move with spotpass and streetpass. Giving us a reason to bring our 3DS everywhere we go, to pick up free stuff without the need for wifi or 3G. Imagine the next Pokemon game with these 2 features built in. :D
It's so annoying having to switch your wireless network to WEP when you want to play a DS game.
I totally agree with you on that, especially pokemon soulsilver/heartgold. Comcast recently pushed a firmware update to my gateway and I can't even select WEP anymore since it is no longer considered a secure encryption method. So if I want to connect online with those games, I need to have it tethered to my smartphone and use 3G.

Isn't Nintendo Network just a rebranding of the current system?

On a related note, thanks for mentioning the concerts - I had forgotten about them, but now I have tickets for the show near DC at the end of July!

I'm having a bit of buyers remorse.

I bought a 3DS two months ago and really liked Mario 3DS, and admittedly I still have the whole second world to deal with...but everything else is underwhelming.

Mario Kart is ok, but I swear the blue shells make this game no fun.
Kid Icarus was ok too, but I found it difficult to control so I traded it in.
Zelda OoT is something I was going to try but after an hour with it I realized that I'm not interested in re-playing old games.

So now I'm hoping for Mario Tennis to pan out otherwise I'm going to wonder why I let myself get fooled AGAIN.

Fooled again? What was the previous time?

Resident Evil is definitely worth your time. Can't blame you for disliking Kid Icarus but I don't consider it unplayable.

MK7 is more balanced than MK Wii, I've found I can often recover from a blue shell and reclaim 1st. I have on occasion, though, turned off the game in a rage b/c of it.

Don't forget that Wolf Trap is an outside Concert Hall, so bring a jacket just in case.

I was under the impression that it would be an update to the current model, but reading back on the articles, it seems to be just a few waves of improvements such as adding DLC support, full game downloads, personal accounts, and the like.

It's an Update to the current model. It'll be more apparent on Wii U with user accounts and no friend codes, system transfers and other stuff like Friend Requests/Lists being Server Side, not Client Side.

Got the MK7 patch. It updated rather painlessly, and it's a small download. Does what it's supposed to do, and lists the version # on the multiplayer icon on the main screen. Simple and efficient, I like it.

Now that we can see that they can do title updates and patches without much difficulty, I'd love for them to release extra tracks for MK7 and support the game. I'd gladly pay $5-10 for as many new tracks, or maybe even classic courses. I know Nintendo has resisted DLC because they (rightly) think a packaged game should be a complete experience out of the box, but a year post-release to add content would go over extremely well. I'm always disappointed to learn that another Mario Kart is going to have the standard 32 tracks, with the recent trend of only 16 of them being brand-new.

Thanks for the info. It's in July so we'll see... we didn't get lawn seats so it'll at least be under the covering.

Nice to see Nintendo finally catch up with the rest of the world. This shit should have been standard on the Wii. I will say, I'm really satisfied with the 3DS online stuff, and the eShop is mostly user-friendly. Way better than the DSiware shop.
Anyone think they'll be a 3DS XL somewhere down the line? That with dual circle pads would be awesome.
You know I think you're the 1st person to ask this? ;)

The Wii U is the 3DS XL, minus the 3D.

The Wii. I'm starting to have a love/hate relationship with Nintendo.

RE is a series I've never gotten into. And I agree that Kid Icarus is by no means unplayable, but more frustrating than I'm willing to put up with. I imagine many will have a great time with this game.

Oh GOD, MK Wii was the worst. I get why the blue shell exists but it's also making the game no fun for me at points. I'm still getting first most of the time but I hate that damn shell!

I'm still going to hold out for Mario Tennis, the reviews are a little mediocre but I've always like that series, except for the GCN version (no player progression).

I swear I did that once (just as it was coming down to strike) but people said I was lying. I haven't tried that hard to duplicate it, but if this is confirmed then at least it's nice to know that you can escape it with skill.

Yes, you can escape a blue shell with either a warp jump or a mushroom boost, but really, what are the odds of getting the latter while in first place?

I think if you escape a Blue Shell the race should just end. Really glad they patched out the glitches though. I can finally play online again, and with my favorite track.

That's assuming you have a turbo to time. Unfortunately, 1st place mostly nets you green shells and bananas, so the odds of having a Mushroom when you need one are slim, let alone getting the timing right.

At times they ruin the game or make it feel broken, but as i said before, its way toned down from MK Wii, and I find myself coming back to it. With the patch, online is fun again, which is even better.
Mario Tennis Open tomorrow! Does anyone care?

I'm happy that it has online multiplayer but I'm not sure that justifies a $40 pickup.
Uh... or yesterday.

I picked it up on my lunch break and... look, it's Mario Tennis. Every review has touched on the lack of any kind of story mode/RPG mode, so I won't rehash that. As a pick up and play game, it seems pretty decent so far, and the minigames aren't terrible.

Question is... is it worth $40 to you? That's going to be on a person-by-person basis. As someone who played the DEMO, mind you, of Virtua Tennis for the Dreamcast more than I played some of my actual Dreamcast games, a nice intermittent 10-minute distraction tennis game is right up my alley. Unless there's some depth I'm missing, that's basically what this is. It's also important to note that the majority (if not all) of the store unlockables are clothes/rackets/etc for your Mii player, so if you're someone like me who generally uses the Mario characters, the coin earning aspect of this is almost useless. It's a bizarre design choice.

So, yeah... I'll get my $40 out of it, but it's certainly not an 'everyone else will, too' game.
I was interested until I saw that there wasn't an RPG or story mode. The Super Mario Bros. mode looks great, but not $40 great.
So it's still not as good as the GBC/GBA versions? Boo!
