Nintendo 3DS - General Discussion Thread

I would absolutely buy this for my son, IF I could sell his current 3DS for max profit now, and then transfer all of the content that he purchased (2x $40 cards + ambassador) to a new 3DS XL in August. Unfortunately this doesn't seem possible.

Long time no post, boys & girls...how's everyone?

Had another burnout...now I'm playing catchup. First thing I see upon returning to a gaming-related site? 3DS XL. Wow, already.

Glad I've been putting off buying a JP 3DS all this time...now I can get a JP 3DS XL instead (in addition to the NA version, of course)!

I might bite. My son really wants a 3DS (he is always asking to play mine) so I'm thinking about giving him mine and buying a new XL for myself provided I can transfer Pushmo.

Friendly reminder: Last day to input Club Nintendo codes for 2012 and last day to use coins that may be expiring this year.

I am willing to buy codes that are dropping in value today if anyone has any to sell. I'd prefer to pay through Amazon Payments (essentially gives you a gift card). I'd also pay for games that came out this year (Fortune Street, Mario Party 9, Kid Icarus, most 3DS games, etc).

Again, if you have coins expiring this year and you don't know what to get, I will also pay to have you order things for me.
so.. im sure this has been covered before, but does anyone know why amazon doesn't (directly) sell the 3ds?
cause people said their system came damaged since amazon shipped it very poorly ... im guessing they gave away too much credit to people to make selling the system worth it

wow, i remember that.. but didn't realize that it became a permanent thing.

they aren't even taking preorders for the XL apparantly

Actually, it has nothing to do with Amazon's shipping. It is due to the poor design of the 3DS itself, which can cause the upper screen to be scratched by the lower half's bezel/analog pad/etc. That's most likely why Amazon U.S. stopped selling the 3DS entirely.

It is a bit surprising that they aren't taking preorders for the 3DSXL though, since presumably Nintendo fixed that design flaw for the XL (one would hope).

if that was the case Couldnt someone buy a 3ds today... Play with it for a few months/years and then DEMAND nintendo replace the screens for free since its a defect in the system and not something the end user did... sort of shocked no class action lawsuit about this demanding nintendo fix it

I don't know that there's even been complaints of scratched screens from that.. all I've ever seen on mineis a dust mark.. but it did freak me out enough to get a screen protector .. maybe they just got lots of complaints

Amazon did start selling them again about a month or two ago, but I guess they decided to jump ship again... They also weren't selling Wii's for about 6 months but it looks like they've got those again. Weird.

That is a sweet wallpaper, a little cluttered but I'll definitely use it for a while! Thanks for posting that link

Good point. However, Nintendo's position has always been that there are no design defects with the 3DS, and the system is "within specifications". Same goes for the wobbly hinges issue. So there really isn't anything a consumer can do about it. Amazon U.S. must have just decided not to sell the 3DS, probably due to these issues.

I guess I should invest in screen protectors then, if the 3DS XL or later models of the 3DS don't fix this design flaw.

I so want that UK pre-order Mario coin shaped game holder bonus!

I keep the thin foam sheet that came with the system in between the two screens.

haha, same. Almost had a heart attack when I saw my sister's dog carry it off once. Luckily she (the dog, not my sister, haha) didn't chew it up.

I have a Zelda edition 3DS and the paint has peeled off one side of the d-pad. This isn't my pic, but is pretty much identical to the state of mine: http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/535/dpad.jpg. It's annoying as I can feel it while playing and obviously I'm also worried about the damage getting even worse. I looked and I've put in 170 hours on the system. I did buy it used, but when I got it it was near mint and the guy obviously hadn't been using it much (he didn't even get the Zelda Four Swords while it was free ). I'm not rough while playing it or anything like that.

I have several questions:

Will Nintendo cover this under warranty? Apparently it's a fairly common issue. (I haven't noticed the screen problems you guys have been talking about, though I'm using screen protector film.) Will I have a problem with the warranty since I'm the second owner? I think I have all the original packaging but no receipt.
Will I be able to get my same system back (my preference, as I don't want to lose anything) or a Zelda edition replacement? If not, will they let me get the purple? :D

Just fill out the claim online and see if they take it. I had a GB Micro I got off CAG that the left shoulder button stopped working. I think it was out of warranty but they actually sent me a replacement Micro. I was quite pleased.
Engadget reviews the 3DS XL.
Can't wait to get my hands on it at Comic Con/Wii U experience.
this is funny: "with no addition of a (mildly) hardcore gamer-courting second analog stick. "

sometimes because of all the bitching, you kinda forget what the 80% of the audience really cares about, which isn't the second analog stick.

i really hope the XL is comfortable to hold.

is it just me or is the normal 3ds shockingly painful to hold for more than 10 minutes or so?

it might just be me because i don't have a full range of motion in my left arm due to an old injury.. so maybe i hold it weird.

although.. the old DSlite was never as painful and i cant really figure out why. maybe the 3d forces me to hold the 3ds at a weird angle, or maybe the controls are just too close to the edge(never really compared the distance to the edge between them)

whatever the reason is i hope the XL solves it. as it stands now i do have a cheap grip for my 3ds that makes it fatter and wider(moves the buttons away from the edges) and that does make it immensely more comfortable to play. if not for that grip i dont know how i'd have ever gotten through OoT on it :)

nah son...the 3DS is just hard to hold after a few minute of play, unless you have little hands. I get cramped up trying to hold it while pushing the button. I'm all for the 3DSXL just gotta see the trade in promos for it and/or the holiday sale bundles.

Sigh. I really want the XL, but I'm holding off until they release something other than Blue and Red here. I honestly love everything about it except for that. It's a small thing that doesn't have anything to do with gameplay, but it's enough to make me hold off.

Honestly, it's a bizarre decision. Black or silver. Would've been easy.
damn, for some reason I thought US release had black included at launch? wth?
Yeah, up until a few days ago, so did I.

It's strange, too, since I'd have to guess that the target audience for this is older gamers who don't care about system portability. The red and blue, while not totally horrendous, just aren't very 'adult' colors in any way. I have little issue playing my black 3DS in public, but I'd be slightly more hesistant about the red or blue XL. That's obviously a personal thing, but I'd wager I'm not totally alone on that.

I guess they want ppl to put white ovals on the red one to mimic the super mario mushroom...strange and lame. maybe they had a ton of left over red and blue plastic from the other models and are trying to get rid of it.

blah...speaking of blah as well, I wish the elite (gold) status rewards had more 3DS downloads as options, I already own donkey kong. Yaaaaayyyyy, and I sure as hell don't want old skool gameboy metroid. I might have to get the calendar by default and just gift it. "get the games for Wii instead?" I would but I already have Mario Kart Wii, getting the older one is just not what I want to go back to. Mejora's Mask isn't really a pick up and put down kinda game either for me in this summer/fall of blockbusters.

Yeah, OoT gave me a hand cramp that lasted for days. Once again allow me to sing the praises of Nokias Power Grip Plus. Triples the battery life and makes it more comfortable to hold. Well worth it!

No Majora's Mask gift to me? D:

Any ideas what a black Friday bundle could be like? Maybe a special edition one for $169.99? All the more reason to hold out.

I just place a thick pillow on my lap and play my 3DS on top of it...that way my big hands don't get cramped. Helps keep the 3DS in position as well.

I think I'll hold off for other XL colors as well. Just have to be patient...

Surprised at how much I'm enjoying Theatrythm. Wouldn't have paid $40 for it but as part of the B2G1 at Best Buy this week, I'm totally satisfied with it.

In case you're not familiar, it's about the size of a DS case and looks like this inside:

Used to keep my games in a couple TicTac cases (not kidding) before getting the 18 game case from Club Nintendo. Worked surprisingly well :D

I have been using a Game Gear cartridge case since the original DS. Holds around 8 games and stays shut. Cool retro game case and small.

Meh, I can't decide if I want the Nintendo Club cards or posters. I like the cards and I especially like that they have the club logo, but I literally have at least 30 packs of playing cards. The posters are nice-ish and I could always use more, but I don't currently have anywhere to hang them up. And I guess it's silly, but I don't like that they don't appear to have the club logo on them.
