The Nintendo of America page says a digital download code is included.
It’s up for preorder now at GameStop and says pre-installed. I preordered it so we’ll see. Wondering what the supply of these will be...

Looks like Wario64 clarified that US gets a code and UK is pre-installed.

Gone Home on the Switch features actual SNES carts in it instead of generic clones of the classics:

What does 32-bit have to do with Metal Slug? The Neo had the same CPU as the Genesis. It's very much 16-bt.
I know that's not true (that it's 16 bit, regardless of CPU alone), as it costs $1k when i was young & my mom could never afford to get me one. There is a reason all of it's games look better to me than Genesis or SNES, but it seems it was 24bit on the commercials/advertising of that era. I knew it wasn't 16 bit, but to answer your question of why, because it looks better. It just has more detail, maybe (or at least ot seems so to someone that's very particular about this look), is the best answer i can give. I don't get to choose what i like or am attracted to, but maybe you do? Here's from the neo geo Wikipedia page:

It was the first system in SNK's Neo Geo family. The Neo Geo was marketed as 24-bit; its CPU is technically a parallel processing 16/32-bit 68000-based system with an 8/16-bit Z80 coprocessor, while its GPU chipset has a 24-bit graphics data bus.

As stated already, NeoGEO was a 16-bit system, and in all honesty, slow down in this period of gaming was a God send, as SNES/GEO games could get rather busy, and the slow down came at times when it helped to combat the masses. It's a product of that period of game making, and is a part of what made those games what they are. You honestly seem to have more issues with graphics, than anything else, so I would recommend avoiding these types of games in the future.

The PS1/Saturn where of the 32-bit type, and I can't think of any 2D games offered there, that look any better than Metal Slug, as it's all about the art style, and how well animation is shown. Heart of Darkness on the PS1 was probably one of the best 2D games offered, but that was a digital FMV type hybrid, but it did looked cool. As for more traditional 2D art, all 32-bit really added was the ability for bigger sprites and more colors. While I don't own Octopath, I find the graphics to be amazing, as Square & Enix used to offer some amazing 2D art, and this is probably the best showing from them in ages.

My son will play some retro style games(8bit/16bit), but he doesn't stick around long, and there's no harm in it. You like what you like, but you seem to be trying to force yourself to like a style you don't like, and hope the gameplay might make up for it? That will never happen. Shovel Knight, The Messenger, etc are games I always look forward to, as they look like past titles, but also offer new gameplay elements that bring them in to the modern age.
Slowdown seems to invalidate my button presses, so that can't be celebrated (at least I've never heard that before). I posted above about Neo Geo, as it was not 16 bit. I was actually gaming when it came out, & i remember because a person at software etc was telling my mom why it was so expensive (we were poor, but my mom would get me everything she could afford to support my gaming interests. I remember her telling me she was so upset because she knew she'd never be able to save up enough to buy that for me). It may have been marketed as 24bit, not 32bit, but not 16bit, fwiw. I mentioned 32bit as a generic way to say anything w more detail than SNES/genesis.

You are corrent about trying to force myself into liking those games, but because the market is oversaturated with those types of games, i am extremely limited if i ignore games with "retro" look, especially on Switch. The 3ds was able to help me look past that when 3d was enabled, but increasing number of games in eshop stopped using the 3d without letting the consumer know or by tagging them as 3d on the eshop following Nintendo's lead, since it never happened until after Pokemon X/Y, but at least that had battles in 3d; Or, they'd do like FF Explorers & they'd put the title screen in 3d so they could feel less guilty (or avoid lawsuits?) about labeling them w 3d tags. After i bought the game & discovered i would never touch it because it wasn't in 3d, it was too late because there are no refunds even if you've only spend 15 seconds "playing" it.

I’m so frustrated right now. I have a wii and fully meant to buy some classic games off of the wii shop channel like the turbo Graff games and sin and punishment and a few others, but it’s about 6 mo the too late to buy points with a credit card or wii points card? Is there no way around this? I guess I would have to buy another wii system that has points on it? I sort of doubt any of those exist at this point.
If you have a Wii U, many (but not all) of the TG-16 from the Wii Shop Channel are available to purchase from the Nintendo eShop for the same prices. Most of the Wii Shop Channel N64 games are on the Wii U Nintendo eShop, too, including Sin and Punishment.

I have purchased a few Wii consoles from eBay in the past few years that had Wii Shop Channel Virtual Console/Wii Points on them and transferred them to my Wii U and bought stuff in vWii Mode. Check the listing to see what's on them or email the seller and ask.

Amazon.com also is a good place to go. When you search for Wii consoles to purchase, go through ALL the pages and look at the descriptions. Sometimes people put what Virtual Console has been purchased on the console in the description. You may find what you are looking for there, too!

Even though you can't add points on the Wii Shop Channel yourself, if you find a used Wii with a points balance/purchased content, you can still make purchases with those points or transfer it to your Wii U and buy from there.

Hope you can find the games you are looking for!

Xenoblade 2 ruined me for a lot of sub-par rpgs... Stella Glow ruined me for less polished strategy rgps.   Definitely give the demo a shot even if you only have a passing interest in the genre.  IF it does nothing for you then pass on it, but if you enjoy it then $15 is a solid deal.

Same here. I'm wondering if I should even bother starting Ys VIII. At least, I have Cyberpunk 2077 to look forward to on the non-JRPG front.

That's one I plan to eventually check out.

Cyberpunk 2077 looks like something I dreamed of in my youth. Hopefully the end product measures up. I have faith it will.

Xenoblade Chronicles 2...hasn't ruined me in RPGs :D
I'm kind of glad it's ruined me for lesser games in the genre. I was getting a bit to open to experience everything when everything really isn't worth experiencing. More time spend playing stuff I'm really loving... is just better. This is flip opposite of me 20 years ago when I loved just playing everything.

New email from Nintendo about the upcoming FW 6.00 update for the Switch:

On 9/18, your Nintendo Switch will be receiving a system update, version 6.0.0. Afterwards, it will no longer be possible to unlink your Nintendo Account from your Nintendo Switch user profile. Prior to this change, you should verify that your Nintendo Account or your child’s Nintendo Account is linked to the correct user profile.

Is this referring to the 3ds/Wii u account?
No this is to prevent people from uploading your saves to the cloud de-linking your Nintendo Account (which is Switch only) and moving it to another user and reuploading saves for duping etc. They are in effect moving the account system to more like psn and live.

You are thinking of the Legacy NNID which you could link to your Switch Account for a shared wallet.

It is pretty easy before this update to have four separate user ids and move the one account between them, this doesn’t really change anything other than unify your switch user account with the actual online login account.

Thank you for the explanation, Nintendo has made all this super complicated with all the different accounts, but sounds like it's headed in the right direction.

Does this upcoming firmware change mean that I can re-download my digital games and saves to another switch in case the one I have buys the farm?

i will just plant this here but if you are picky about sd cards, the official switch sd 128gb is 50% off on amazon right now if plan to get one

Anyone else excited about the upcoming Direct? I am, but at the same time I have a feeling there won't be much big news since some of it already leaked. I am interested to see if they edited out some things that leaked/got announced. Like for example I would assume Civ 6 would for sure be on it, if the direct wasn't delayed. I also hope they don't spend too much time on Smash Bros. I feel like Zelda/Mario didn't get as much attention as Smash before it released. Or maybe I just feel that way since I am not interested in that game.

I think Nintendo should have a big 3rd year. Developers probably realized about a year ago it is safe/profitable to develop on the Switch, so some of those games should surface soon. Personally I am hoping for a serious first person shooter type game. With that, I think the Switch will have every game genre covered. Like Overwatch or an older Call of Duty/Battlefield (something the Switch can handle). My biggest wish of all though, is Battlefield Bad Company 2 remaster.

Does this upcoming firmware change mean that I can re-download my digital games and saves to another switch in case the one I have buys the farm?
You could always do this. Your issue though is the delinking your account from a dead Switch. I am not 100% sure how that works with a dead system. I am guessing this is where you’d have to call CS. I would like for them to give a way to remotely delink your account from a Switch like how you can on PSN and Live.

But even right now, you could delink your account from the switch, go to another switch link your account and start downloading stuff. As long as the account is on that new switch anyone can play the games.

I know of people with two switches and three accounts and they use the third account to ahare games between the two switches

On a tangent, Nintendo customer service is absolutely the best customer service staff I have ever dealt with.

The fact you have to call to do this, is the failure.

Doesnt matter how nice they are. It took me 40 minutes to deal with my dead wii u, takes 5 min or less with psn/xbox. (From being on hold and the whole process)
This is where N has been dead last.

Crossing fingers for Tokyo mirage sessions for switch being announced today. A definitive edition has been rumored online, but that’s all it’s been, rumors. Having it playable in handheld mode would be awesome. Can’t do that with my WiiU version, which is why I’ve barely scratched the surface of the game.

I played a few hours into it, and I really couldn't get into it. I wish Persona 5 or 4 could be ported to switch.

Considering there's a PS3 version, it certainly could be. I'd like to the Tokyo Mirage and the Persona 3DS means that license isn't locked to Sony in any way.

I'm pretty sure mainline numbered Persona titles are Sony exclusives. I hope Shin Megami Tensei V is going to be in the same quality ballpark of Persona 5.

Persona 4 or 5 on the Switch would be an absolute MUST BUY for me!
I would run, not walk, run to go get them.
But, I would probably have to change my shorts first, because I would have most likely shat myself.

I may be misunderstanding the account linking email, but here’s how I understood it.

As of now, I can have two users on my switch and I can change which of those two users is tied to my Nintendo online account.
Once the update rolls out I can no longer transfer ownership of my Nintendo Account from user A to user B. I’ll still be able to change which hardware User A, who has ownership of my Nintendo account, from one switch to another.

I'll sign up for the 7 day trial simply to backup my game saves.  The service is not worth $20 to me.  It's clear Nintendo doesn't really know what they are doing.  Don't even get me started on the wireless NES Switch controllers.  They are the same price as an NES classic.  Total and utter rip off!

While in general I agree, I'll still buy it. It's only $20, and I want to play Mario Party with friends online. So I'm stuck there.

Pretty good Direct today. Excited for a new Luigi's Mansion, that NSMB is coming to Switch (I've never played it), Civ 6 looks good, the FF announcements are excellent, and I'm sure the Animal Crossing announcement is nice if that's your thing (it hasn't ever been mine).

I might pick up Crash for $30. Has anyone played it on Switch and could comment?

If you're not going to keep an active sub, the save backup probably isn't going to be useful for you unless you're looking to move them to another Switch during that seven days:

We are unable to guarantee that cloud save data will be retained after an extended period of time from when your membership is ended. However, you can continue to use the save data that is saved to your system memory.

Diablo 3 amiibo support..... loot on top of a loot game.
Was already sold, they dont need to make it more addictive.

(Have not watched the direct so no clue about what the amiibos will do in game)

I do not understand why people keep making this comparison. These are wireless controllers that are shaped like NES controllers. They are completely optional. They're priced comparatively to other controllers for the Switch. While I don't like that you have to purchase the pair, they're also priced comparatively to 2 8BitDo wireless controllers for the NES Classic. They're not really something that should be compared to a mini-emulator.

I still think they're expensive, but the controllers and the NES Classic are completely different things!

I do think it's fair to compare the NES game selection of the online service to the games on the NES Classic, but even that assumes you're using the online service only for the NES games.

The problem I have with them is that they can ONLY be used with the Online service NES games.

I snagged it two weeks ago when BB had the physical version for $30/$24 and am surprised by how much I'm enjoying it. I was extremely disappointed in the new physics when I first tried it on PS4, but knowing what you're in for ahead of time helps mitigate the impact. I think playing on the Switch instead of with a PlayStation controller also helps me not compare it to the originals as much.

Think of it like a cross between Crash Bandicoot and a game like Super Meat Boy (i.e. you're gonna have moments where you spend a bunch of lives in quick succession on something stupid) and you'll have fun.

The Jaguar was marketed as 64-bit, and it wasn't. That's a lot of what marketing is. The Motorola 68000 is a 16-bit CPU. The X68000 used it, the Genesis used it, the Neo Geo used it, etc. The Genesis had the Zylog Z80 co-processor as well. The architecture was very similar. The Neo Geo just didn't cut any corners, including cart size, which is why it looks so much better.
