Those people who were already hired at Nintendo to think about what the price of the thing should be hurt their brains ok they're not very smart brain damage is expensive to repair

So is Nintendo going to lower their prices now? If not, what will be their excuse this time?

No. Stop being so disingenuous. It's okay if you're a cheap ass, it's in the site name, but don't be so salty about it.

Nintendo has confirmed that the US tariffs, which were introduced on the same day as the Switch 2 event last week, were "not factored" into the $449.99 price tag.

i know we are in the read the headline and go on era, but this only stops the tariffs Trump put in place using the emergency powers law

Trump might still be able to temporarily launch import taxes of 15% for 150 days on nations with which the U.S. runs a substantial trade deficit. The ruling notes that a president has this authority under Section 122 of the Trade Act of 1974

The ruling left in place any tariffs that Trump put in place using his Section 232 powers from the Trade Expansion Act of 1962. He put a 25% tax on most imported autos and parts, as well as on all foreign-made steel and aluminum. Those tariffs depend on a Commerce Department investigation that reveals national security risks from imported products.

The Japanese region locked Switch 2 is less, but if you want to buy the region free version with language support for English while in Japan, it’ll cost $500 and you can only order it in Japan from Nintendo themselves. So the version we are getting in the USA, is less than the same version in Japan. Also it’s less here than a lot of EU countries. But if you want to live the Japanese switch 2 experience and only use the Japanese eshop and all games are forced Japanese only… you’ll have to fly to Japan to buy one. Good luck saving money flying to Japan to buy a sold out system and be restricted.

In theory, shouldn't there be SOME way to determine the manufacturer of these private label flash cards? No ID codes or anything? I haven't opened my package yet, but I assume if there was any identifiable information, it would have been posted by now.

I would expect the IDs wouldn’t match a specific manufacturer but be custom for Onn. But it’s plausible theres a way to tell either through benchmarking or through some capacity comparisons or something through software and comparing ripped content. The main thing is, it’s not a no name brand behind it.

Same for the GameStop branded express cards which have the same 800 MB/s read as the Onn cards but have no listed write speeds. It’s theorized these GS and Onn cards are the same. But this stuff is too new to have enough data yet. At least Walmart has a good return policy.

I still don't understand how Nintendo can be selling switch 2 not at a loss for $343 USA money in Japan but charge people that live in the US $449.99. I know we don't know exactly how much it costs Nintendo to make each console but $107 is too big of a gap.

Oh no an extremely tiny minority of people maybe ordered the Japanese version from play asia for $40 and then paid $50 with shipping on a $60 game! But mostly not because they are scared by the silly moon language on the packaging!

Meanwhile the USA seemed to get screwed left and right on digital only releases for Switch when Asia and even Europe would still get them.

Nintendo is clearly ANTI American and hates us for ARE FREEDOMS.

Nickel and diming everywhere on prices AND consumer choice with the Switch 2 it seems.

I dont think it's that tiny. You're forgetting about woot, where they sell you cheaper region copies without telling you it's not ESRB (or at least, didnt for a long time).
Why wouldnt a smart buyer not buy from them? $15 less!
I'd blame woot over the weebs, weebs were probably why they let it be region free in the first place.

Forgetting woot is like forgetting Poland

After some light googling it seems the region free thing really is a bizarrely dumb Japan only thing where they like don't even recommend you travel with it for warranty reasons. Bonkers. I guess Nintendo just hates Japanese people and I have it backwards. Guess we have to wait a week before the silly lock outs are over and we can learn exactly how Nintendo is definitely screwing everyone. It would be real sad if all Switch 2s are region locked, the 3DS era was so disappointing after DS and GBA and such weren't region locked.

Also lol @ thinking $15 like a year later or many more for first party Nintendo games is a good deal and breaking poor little Nintendo's bank somehow.

A year late? It was like instant. Echoes of Wisdom was on sale right away.
Also i think you're right, it's just japan is region locked to prevent us from wanting to buy the cheaper version, right? Kinda weird but i understand it. Imagine if we had to spend $100 more to buy a region-free switch... or $100 less for a region-locked switch?

No, not at all, it's because it has a more limited warranty in general, like they don't want you to travel with it AT ALL because what if you take it to a barbarous nation like the United States where everyone is shooting at each other all the time and no one raises their kids properly? We can't cover that kind of liability!

Also the "new" discount price on woot is $50, look at Xenoblade Chronicles X's price right now, that's what Echoes was when it hit woot a couple weeks after release or whatever it was. Still a ton of ancient games like Smash and Pokemon Arceus that are $40+. Woot just isn't a factor.

I don’t know exactly how Nintendo works but I know where I work, it takes several days, sometimes weeks for us to analyze and determine how tariffs will affect our forecasts and budgets. I’m sure Nintendo and Microsoft wouldn’t want to announce a price decrease to then have this court ruling changed and have to announce another price increase.

Something like this court case will be a moot point on budget adjustment until the dust settles on which way the courts go. Until Nintendo knows for sure if the tariffs are truly blocked, I wouldn’t expect to see them update or change revenue forecasts. Trump being able to willy nilly increase or decrease tariffs makes it really hard on finance teams to be able to forecast. It’s why tax law is better kept by a slower moving body (congress) that won’t be constantly changing it. I know we won’t do anything until it’s settled.

We don't know that the Japanese Switch 2 is being sold "not at a loss."

It might be fair to assume Nintendo is willing to take a loss in their home market due to current fiscal conditions, and assume they'll make it up in software.

This might also explain the $10 demo...

I don’t think anyone is planning on a Japan trip solely to pick up a Switch 2. But picking up one has been coming up fairly often in Japan travel subs. People figure if they are already over there, they may as well pick one up. Especially with the yen still being so weak. I had my trip booked before the Switch 2 was announced. Before the languge/eshop locking was known it did cross my mind to buy one there.

lol at the woot price flexing… often that’s a UAE copy of a game, which to me isn’t what I’m after in my NA physical collection. If I’m not buying at launch, like that Zelda game, I’ll wait for GameFly and buy used or a sale in a store that only stocks NA released games.

I’m in the process of planning a trip to Japan next year myself, though I’m not really going for shopping. Still, I can see the temptation, especially for higher dollar items. JapanTravel and JapanTravelTips over on Reddit have been helpful.

Nintendo is doing all of this to combat scalpers and foreigners while giving the Japanese public a system to buy. It’s kind of brilliant. Those that want the international version have to buy direct from Nintendo, but it costs more than buying in the USA.

FTFY

A friendly reminder that this administration is currently ignoring two other Supreme Court orders, therefore speculation on active events and impacts to pricing are very "crystal ball" territory.

I would bet the prices don't go down in either case.

I really, really miss the "Greatest Hits" and "Players Choice" era of gaming. Those older Switch games should be $20-$30 MSRP at this point. I do have a few I want and been waiting. I want the new Zelda and Princess Peach games, but they're not a priority. I try not to pay over $40, so I've been watching Woot and waiting to see if I can do a bulk buy with a few other games on my wishlist.

Going to be an exciting time soon, regardless. Console launches are always interesting times.

Shopping isn’t a main focus of my trip either. A lot of sightseeing, but since our teens are in school we are going during the rainy season into the hot/humid summer so shopping will probably be a break during the day. I tried to get Pokemon Cafe reservations, but I had no chance against the bots. I didn’t want to pay a bot for a reservation & then feel obligated to plan my day around the reservation. We instead decided to do a dessert buffet. We’re doing this one.

We have very few must buys: custom made shirts from Uniqlo, physical copy of Fantasy Life for the Switch and the Hiroshima Pikachu from the Pokemon Center.

I lived in Japan for three years and only left due to COVID.

If you go to buy:

  1. Bring empty suit case(s)
  2. Don't shop in the tourist districts; always overpriced
  3. Unless it's common, if you see it and want it, buy it. You won't find it again.
  4. Hard Off/Hobby Off don't price like GameStop; each store prices it's own inventory so you might find something cheaper at a different one
  5. Don't be "that gaijin," be respectful, be aware of your surroundings, and if you need help, the Japanese customer services respond well enough to pointing and grunting... But a "Sumimasen" (excuse me), point to what you want in a case, and say "kore (ko-ray), onigashimas" (this, please).
  6. Number 5 works at restaurants, too; just point at the menu item... If you can't read, don't ask for recommendation, ask for "besuto serā" (best seller). It's easier for everyone and you're probably going to get something good.
  7. Use the public transit system, don't be afraid!

I could give a lot more, I'm rambling, but I recommend going and try to not go to the major tourist spots. Go to the second best or third best spots; less crowds.

I’m going to disagree on #7 for larger groups. There’s going to be 4 of us and in some places a taxi for 4 will be just a few bucks more than using public transit and a heck of a lot less walking up and down stairs. I’ve got Go and Uber on my phone ready to go.

For most of my life it's been the start of the best deals as the previous gen stuff starts to phase out. Getting extra controllers, finding games on the cheap (often 4 for $20 or even for $10 deals), maybe even getting a backup system. I'm kind of over it. I might buy something but I feel like my Switch collection is pretty much the majority of all I want. I'm done buying everything when it's cheap.

I got a Switch OLED for $200 at Costco a few weeks ago. It came with a carry case, 12 months of Nintendo Online family, and a 256gb micro SD card.

If I had kids in my life to worry about or a niece/nephew, would be the perfect price for sure

But for just me, it's one of those things where it's like damn, great savings, but came far too late in the gen for me to be truly jealous of missing out on it 🤣

Waiting for the Switch Lites to hit the bargain bin for a backup Switch but damn another OLED for $200 is pretty tempting, could just put that toward a Switch 2 though but I'm definitely waiting to see what hardware flaws people find in those after release

Yeah I saw this on the slick deals thread. What state are you in? This is one of those deals where you just are either lucky or you aren't. I have never been able to find these kinds of deals at any Costco's around me in Southern California.

I've been thinking about that a lot for the last two weeks: I wonder how many "zomg the NSW2 is 2 expensssive" people are buying another redundant OG clearance Switch they don't need for $200 instead?

Makes a great gift.

The one caveat is that 3DS systems never really got cheap unlike previous handhelds. They're now worth as much, or more, than MSRP.

And if you have a limited variant, they're ridiculously expensive versus other limited edition systems.

No idea whether the OG Switch will have its own reality distortion field and prices will remain high or if there will be an actual clearance of it after the Switch 2 becomes the endemic device.

Still feels like the PS4 is new and the PS5 is just the actual Pro model... Realizing I bought my first PS4 in like 2016. Is this what getting old feels like?

Hardware, like anything in life, wears out and deteriorates over time. You can afford more video games if you have a modicum of self control and a conception of delayed gratification.

Shocking to most Americans, surely.

Lucked out real good picking up a New 2DS XL for 100 bux at Walmart, haven't opened yet, do not regret because I use my 3DS all the freaking time and man is it looking and feeling a bit rough lately. Better get in a playthrough of 3D Land soon possibly the only game that the 3D feature is kind of helpful for playing through

If you like reading old gaming magazines, Game Informer has their entire archive available to peruse if you have an account on their site, which they'll contact you when they're ready to take subs for new issues when they're ready to start that in the near future:

Like Swordity above, I got one of the New 2DS XL for $100 @ Walmart. I wish I had grabbed a couple, that was such a good deal and I didn't care about the lack of 3d. Also picked up a 2DS refurbished from Nintendo for like $50. There was also those regular 3DS's (the ones that had faceplates) that were cheap one BF at walmart. The 2DS also popped up cheap several times. But some versions didn't get cheap, they just sold out and were gone.

There last summer. Couple things.

As kbob mentioned extra suitcase. Bring it or buy one or two. We bought two there.

IF you are disney people (we are), try and hit Disney sea. It’s not that expensive (60 bucks if I remember), unique rides and attractions. Wasn’t that crowded at all and we were there on the opening day of fantasy springs which was wild. Was one of the highlights of our trip.

Bring yen from money exchange at US airport. We didn’t have it for train and it was a PITA.

We did a combo of uber and trains. Trains were easy.

They did. Walmart clearanced out the 2ds door stops and later the new 3ds and 3dsxls for 100 and later 50$.

I also got the launch 3ds for 40 but that was from Amazon warehouse so obviously a Unicorn. Was a sweet deal since I that was a dinger I didn't see anything wrong with it.

Switch wise the only read deal you'll find would be the lites. Regular switches aren't going to be cheaper than 200 definitely. But also different situations as between ongoing support and bc it's not going to get dumped like 3ds and wiiu were. I could maybe see non oled ones that are older models go for 150-175 at clearance but that'd probably be ymmv.

For the train if you have an Apple phone easiest thing is to set up a Suica card on your phone in your Apple wallet. Otherwise pick up an IC card on arrival. And no need to bring yen from the US, just use an ATM on arrival. If you have a Fidelity account then get a debit from them since they have no foreign transaction fees.

As for extra suitcase I’d buy one at the end of the trip if you are traveling around. We are starting in Hiroshima and ending in Tokyo. I plan on using Yamato to move suitcases between hotels (so I don’t have to bring it on the trains). It’ll be cheaper just to buy one at the end of the trip.
