It's the margin of profit. Here's an article about Sony losing money. Microsoft also lost money when they launched series X. Not sure about series S. I have no idea what it costs to make now nor do I care.
‘Strategic price point’ on new console is lower than manufacturing costs

Sony and Microsoft are okay losing money. Nintendo made about $40 for each switch they sold for $299 back in 2017. Don't know how much It costs them to make it now. Switch was also something brand new and innovative. Switch 2 is pretty much just more of the same but for $150 more. I just don't think there's any way it costs Nintendo around $410 to make each switch 2. In my opinion, they are making more profit than they did off of switch. Time will tell. We should know very very soon when some website like digital foundry takes it apart and costs out everything.
You are right that if I knew the price for every single thing I bought, I wouldn't have bought everything that I did buy. If I know for a fact something costa a dollar to make it's being sold for 30 bucks, I'm not going to buy it. If something costs a dollar to make and five it's being sold for $5 and I like the item, I would buy it. It's all about how much profit the company is making off of it and how much it costs. We are discussing a $450 console here. If it costs Nintendo $337 to make, I'm not going to buy it for $450 when there's pretty much no innovation at all.
