I have a ds but no psp. Though, when looking at the psp, I can't find anything that catches my interest. I've only had a ds a few days and played it maybe for an hour, so I don't have much experience with that either. But there are so many games that I want (relative to the total), and I haven't found even one psp game that I actually want to buy.

Honestly, there are more interesting n-gage titles than psp ones in my mind.

This thread is not for general PSP vs. DS discussion. Read the title

for me:

Console = Sony, xbox close 2nd

Handheld = Nintendo

I have both... but I own no games for the PSP, only 2 movies... DS currently has the better games SO I will keep buying DS games. PSP is filled with alot of crap ports... once I see something good I will buy a PSP game...

I don't think any Nintendo "fanboys" would feel that way. Isn't that the poin of being a fanboy....you like every peice of crap that a certain company makes better than everyone elses peice of crap. "Fanboy" is a little too powerful of a word. Fanboys are ridiculous.

Personally, I prefer Nintendo, but I'm not too proud to admit a superior product when I see one. I put off buying a PSP until I saw better games....ie. SOCOM, Infected, and maybe GTA. Overall, the DS still has superior games. It's such a technological powerhouse that I'm inclined to hold the PSP at much higher standards. A few more quality titles and I'll start to admit the PSP is better, but it has a few hurdles to jump. One thing that scares me is that the DS isn't even considered by Nintendo to be competition to the PSP....I think we'll see the next Gameboy be technologically on par with the PSP if not superior. Portable Gamecube anyone??

If they made the damn system so your arm wouldn't have massive spasming pain rocket through it if you use more than 20 minutes, the PSP would be damn cool.

Course, this is the same reason why I dont like the DS either.

I'm a nintendo console fanboy. I still play my nes, snes, n64 and gamecube. I also cant wait for the revolution. The only portable nintendo games i play are old final fantasy gameboy games. But i also love the psp. Because i can play all those on my psp except n64 and up of course.

I'm totally a Nintendo fanboy (I guess - I don't really discriminate as I've owned and loved the Dreamcast, Genesis, PS1, PS2, etc. and I can tell you when a Nintendo game isn't up to par - Super Mario Sunshine, Wind Waker, etc.). I've owned every single console they have put out at launch except for the NES which I didn't get until I saved up enough money in the summer of 1986. The gamecube is my favorite console of all time followed by the SNES and Playstation 2. I've owned 7 gameboys and I'm going to buy the micro if it comes down in prioce a little. I've even owned a Game and Watch "system." The only Nintendo product I have yet to buy is the DS (but I have played it a bunch) and I don't plan to until probably Super Mario Bros. 4 comes out.

Now on to the PSP: I freaking love this thing. It is slowly creeping up my list of greatest systems of all time. It's funny though because I use it to mainly play NES and SNES games that I grew up on. The emulation aspect is just perfect for me. I travel 3 hours a day to and from work so I mainly play the portable systems and having basically thousands of games to choose from in the palm of my hands can't be beat. That's not to say I haven't been enjoying the PSP for recent releases though - I've played the crap out of HSG (I have the highest ranking) and I love Lumines and Burnout. I've held off on GTA until someone sufficiently cracks v2.0 but I have definitely been impressed with the games so far. I won't even get into how awesome it is to be able to listen to mp3s (OK, I use my iPod for that), watch movies and bring around hundreds of pictures of my daughter whereever I go. I really really love this thing.

I agree completely. I wouldn't be caught dead on my college campus with my DS just because my PSP has hours of music on it!

I dont think spoon_si really has both PSP and DS. i have both, and I would never make such comment. You see guys? It's natural. You want to protect the things that you bought with those hard earned cash. And him being able to say psp is filled with crappy ports contradicts my theory. (You guys want to know DS actually has more ports than PSP?). Hey. it doesnt matter to me. Even though I only use my PSP for ISOs, and Pr0n, it still is a very cool system. My DS on the other hand is very cool as well. I have been playing Castlevania and have put so many hours into it. (strangely, I started to hate the gimmicky "soul eater ring" since it doesnt really help you get the souls at all. I am currently at level 88, and 89.2% of souls.). Anyway. Just my personal point of view. I dont think Spoon_si has both DS and PSP.

well i used to be against the PSP due to the excessive amounts of ports and movies and the lack of games, but i am slowly warming up to it. I initally got it for the emulation, but that got boring and i upgraded to 2.0. I have 4 games, i dont LOVE any of them but they are all fun! I also have a ds and i like that too. I would say they are about equal to me.

I am not really a Nintendo fanboy, but I am a huge fan of Nintendo and I like the PSP better than the DS thus far. That might change once I get MKDS however...

you just wish the DS could play porn, like my psp.

jeez louise?....i dont think i've ever seen that in print before....and really i would think if a "nintendo fanboy" likes the PSP more then they will give their reasons for it thus making it seem like a "VS" thread...
why would anybody choose a movie player over a gaming system...;)
Wow, how did you ever come up with that one?! Hilarious!
why would anybody choose a movie player over a gaming system...;)
No, it's a gaming system, with movie playing capability integrated.

When the game releases outnumber the UMD movie releases, then and only then, is it a gaming system.

I love and hate them both equally. I hate the load times, and battery life on the PSP. I hate the cheap screens, bad backlight, the small size of the screens, and the bulkiness of the DS.
When the game releases outnumber the UMD movie releases, then and only then, is it a gaming system.
Why limit it to movies? When the PSP game releases outnumber the number of songs and photos in the world, then and only then, is it a gaming system.
When the game releases outnumber the UMD movie releases, then and only then, is it a gaming system.
what the fuck are you babbling about? PS2 and xbox also have way more DVD movie titles than both of their games combined. Does it mean XBox and Ps2 are not gaming systems? Moron.

i can see it now....dollar stores with tons of UMDs that nobody wants in a few years

and also i would say since UMD at the moment is PSP exclusive (?) so it makes it seem like it is just a fancy movie player...I know it has a few good games but that is it (and im not talking about any emulators or whatever)...

at the moment it just is not worth the price compared to the DS and quality of DS games coming out recently and in the future

I dont have a PSP however i did contemplate buying one before i got the DS and i did my research on it and decided even though i am very impressed with the PSP device itself that it just wasnt worth it yet in terms of gaming...and i dont want it to watch movies on...that seems totally pointless to me since i can just use a nice portable DVD player and not have to buy the same movie twice.
and yes i get that this isnt a DS vs PSP thread, however i just wanted to clear up my initial comment ;)

I definitely agree with you about the saturation of UMDs in the market. My local stores are busting at the seems with the overflow of UMDs and I'm sure we'll be seeing many clearance sales in the not too distant future.

The problem I have though is this argument that the PSP does not have any good games. As each week passes, the game library is growing and getting better. I personally own 11 games for my PSP and I think everyone of them is a pretty great game. I have about another 10 on my want list, so this "no good games" argument is quickly getting old. I can understand someone saying that maybe the PSP doesn't have enough games in their preferred genre, but just dismissing it with a general statement about no good games is just ridiculous.

I owned a DS and PSP. I sold my DS because many of the games didn't really appeal to me and because the PSP fit my needs much better. I think the DS is a great system, but I'm just getting tired of hearing these general statements that the PSP has no good games.

When I factor in the library of games, the emulation, the web browsing, the MP3s, the movie watching capabilities, photo viewing, and more, it is quickly becoming one of my favorite gaming systems.

Let me know if im miss-informed but I dont think that is a feature of the systems.....

ummmm I think you should go get that checked out... l
Portable Gamecube anyone??
That was a nice thought before E3 and before PSP came out, but if Nintendo did that they'd be a bunch of hypocrites. "Oh, we're so innovative and have such a low need to rely on high end technology that we're going to pull a Sony and portabalize our current generation system. Yeah, no touch screens or motion sensors with this, just a plain system that our fanboys will gobble up even though it's basically a PSP but with Nintendo's name on it and better graphics."

I don't want to offend anybody here or make stereotypes, but the people I'm exposed to convince me that if Nintendo pulled a Gamecube Portable out of their asses it would sell like hot cakes. I remember the only reason they wanted a DS over PSP was becuase they thought PSP would have PSOne era graphics, but now they defend their owning of a DS by saying "it has more gameplay options with the touch screen." Funny thing is the people that tell me this only have games like Asphalt, NFS and Ridge Racer, and we all know how much the touch screen is utilized in those. These people convince me that Nintendo fanboys will take the reasons they hate the PSP and switch them into reasons they love Nintendo's high end portable. "Oh, it's got ZELDA! HOLY CRAP A PORT OF MARIO SUNSHINE! BUT WITH MULTIPLAYER!"

This may sound unprecidented but I hate it when Nintendo fanboys say they hate Sony because the PSP is only graphics, then they turn around and say Gamecube Resident Evil 4 is better than PS2's because it looks better despite PS2's larger amount of gameplay options. Again not all people are like this, but damn why can't they just appreciate systems for what games they have and not the features.

If fanboys ceased to exist the internet might explode and kill everyone.

I was and am really impressed with the DS. It's well built. I really like Nitendogs (zip it!) and love Mario Kart. I also just got the PSP a couple of weeks ago and can't put it down. I love sports games so the PSP blows the DS out of the water here. Minimal drop off from consoles for me. I'm keeping the DS for the Wifi stuff like MK and future releases but the PSP is my handheld of choice. I don't care about the movie stuff, the gaming is just fine.

I do have one small comment on this reply....

The graphics are far more important on a home console... Reason is in my book is becuase its more likely to get displayed on a bigger screen with better resolution... and the bigger the screen the better chance that you will get a benefit out of the graphics... Therefore if the graphics are better on a home console thats a slight advantage....

On a portable you can only cram so much onto a small screen.

On the other hand the graphics claiming people will probably change their tune when the revo comes out as it will most likely be behind at least the PS3 in that department. And controll will be the big push..

Not really. If you'd been paying attention the DS has always been the "third pillar". The DS wasn't about power it was about options, like voice input/ touch screen/ 2 screens/ 2 cartridge slots. It basically gives the developer the option of how to use it. Although it has *enough* power. Now a lot of folks simply regard the DS as the GBA successor (including devs) but IMO, it is not that easy. Until the true GBA successor is released, it will do double duty as both.

The idea that DS owners adopted the system because the PSP's lack of power is ridiculous. Most people I know either bought a DS based on the potential of the nifty features or because it finally had good games.

There is a significant segment of the Nintendo population that would embrace a portable GC (myself included) based on a few conditions. But if Nintendo released a GC-port with marginal battery life, sometimes loong load times, a dozen degraded console ports, with the biggest feature NOT being games. No way in hell I would buy it even if I like Nintendo games more.

FYI- I loved the PSP when it first game out. It made my DS look like an 80's brick cell phone. All of the features were and still are cool. But overtime, the games I like won out.

I would be an instant PSP lover if Sony opened up a little more and allowed people to run unofficial 3rd party programs (homebrew, ...). Until then, it's just a nice system with flaws that costs too much.

Since getting my PSP off here (thanks to TMACDaddy), I have decided it is quite a functional device and I absolutely love how painlessly and seemlessly I can add media stuff to it, particularly movies. The fact that there is a fully functional and free program to format movies for the PSP is a huge, huge plus.

Adding music is just as easy. I'm really impressed on that front. Computers and formats and shit aren't a big thing with me, but it's nice to know that the process is so simple and straightforward that I had a show episode playing within 20 minutes (including 15 for conversion). I don't like how you can't listen to music and, say, surf the net. Maybe that will be changed in the future when they realize how limiting that is. I guess they assume you aren't wanting to do anything else when you surf. That's understandable but come on.

I could care less about emulators and things on it, so for the time being I'm foregoing such usage for straight PSP stuff (maybe I'll play with those later). Lumines is a nice game. Maybe a little overrated but it certainly is addictive. I haven't tried much else aside from Darkstalkers, which I got via Shrike and the fact that it was cheap. I'll give MGS:A a go soon.

I think as far as the unit itself goes, the square button still feels a bit off but I think I read that was (unfortunately) a normal "feature" (thanks Kutaragi). The included wrist strap is ATROCIOUS. I can't believe that passed their hip, cool sensors.

There are some strange quirks with it, but I think I just need to use it more.

I don't like it more than my DS because of fewer games that appeal to me, but there's no denying the sheer multi-faceted nature and media capabilities of the device. In fact, I plan on showing it to my parents because my mom wants a Creative Zen unit, but I think this is a better deal for her. She'd never fill up the 20 gigs and from what I know those things are unstable anyway.

The web browser is a nice touch but it is TERRIBLE. I hope they implement analog stick control on it or at least determine a way to maybe it load information faster.

Anyway, it is a much better system than I gave it credit for. I am impressed with how well and how quickly Sony updates it, the sheer number of things it can do, and the games do look beautiful. The only true flaws are some odd limitations (again, slow browser? can't mp3 and surf at the same time?), but it performs its other capabilities really well.

All in all, a great little system. I think in a few years when a decent library is built, it will be well worth owning. It is right now for the media capability, not the gaming ones. But that will even out more in time.

For me, handheld gaming is all about starting up quickly and ending quickly. I play my DS and GBA when I've got like 10 minutes to kill, and can play a few races in Mario Kart or a few levels in a 2D platformer. I'm experiences with the PSP (although very limited) have not fit this model at all. For instance, my fiancee was going to buy a gift card at a game shop for her brother's birthday. We walked in together, she got in line to get a card (it was kinda busy) and I powered on the PSP display. She was done, already getting antsy to go before the game had even gotten to the title screen. All I was greeted with was 3 different versions of "Loading... please wait." I hardly tollerate that crap on my home consoles; I don't at all on my portables.

So, in the end, the PSP is just not a good fit for me. I'm glad that others enjoy it though. :)
