I have 1000's of gaming magazines still sitting at my parent's house.

Nintendo Power

EGM

EGM2

Tips & Tricks

Gamepro

Gamefan

OPM

PSM

OXM

And likely more of the other common ones.  I really need to sort and sell...after re-reading, of course.

EGM, Nintendo Power, and Gamefan were probably the best for me...especially EGM.  Always was a fan.

I got a copy of Final Fantasy and that Maniac Mansion issue on the morning of September 11,1990, before I rode my bike to school. I was ten years old. What a huge smile I had that day. Then the strategy guide for Final Fantasy came the following month.

I even had that Nintendo Power pin for subscribing. I think I had the bronze pin.

Lucky. My dad moved out of state a few years ago and he threw out all of my old magazines before I could get over to pick them up. I was so pissed as I wanted them. I had issues of Nintendo Power going back to the first issue. He also threw out my strategy guides that I had like Final Fantasy III, Secret of Mana, and Final Fantasy VII.

While I sold off most of my gaming magazines (minus PC Gamer and a few others)... the main thing I saved for myself were some of the posters that came in issues of gamepro. Especially the Street Fighter 2 stuff. All in all, it's nice to go back and look at magazines in digital form for a little nostalgia but I don't exactly miss having all those boxes of stuff. So, maybe look at it as a burdon lifted. You didn't care enough to bring them with you so at least you don't have to figure out what to do with them all anyway. Granted NOSTALGIA is a huge factor for me in some of this stuff.. but I'm glad I got the stuff I wanted to keep narrowed down to where it fits in an accordion folder.

Serious question here-What is the exact reason that scanning old magazines and putting them online to view/download is now legal?

It's not legal. Most of those game magazines everyone's mentioned are all defunct now. On archive.org, people have uploaded roms you can play from your browser, though I haven't been able to get it working myself.

Wow thanks for sharing OP, flipped through one of the issues I took the school with me all the time. Was great to flip through it again. Crazy.

Why is that? Does someone still hold the rights?
The publisher and owner of Gamefan, Dave Halverson, has made it known that he does not wish for digital copies of his magazine to be made available on any site, and that if they were, there would be swift legal action. So of course, respecting his wishes concerning his content no Gamefan magazines are submitted anywhere.

About 10 years ago, I moved. Was super rushed and stressed and was in "throw out" mode to make it easier to pick up and move quickly to my new place. My roommate bailed on me and left without notice, which forced my hand to move due to my finances at the time. Back then, I wasn't into collecting games or anything of the like, as WoW was the only game I played (barf). Anyways, I threw out hundreds of gaming mags, EGM, GamePro, and Nintendo Power dating back to the 90s. It haunts me to this very day. I AM A MONSTER.

Love these archives, took about an hour reading through them at work the other day. Though it made me relive my horrid mistake all over again. :wall:
This is why we preserve these magazines, I hear this story so many times. My wife/parents made me throw away my gaming magazines. I was moving and couldn't take them. I had them in the basement and it flooded and they were ruined. Nothing compares to holding the original magazine in your hands, but 5000 gaming magazines in a digital format, can fit on a 3TB external hard drive easily.

Whoa, hey, I had no idea you were on CAG. Everyone, donate your old magazines to him so younger generations can get in on this "magazine" thing they've read about in history books. Though I think you have plenty of material right now that's still waiting to be scanned, right?

Well, hats off to you and your team for all your hard work. Surely bring a lot of smiles to faces as memories come flooding back. If you can discuss it, I did notice your Nintendo Power archive is no longer on the site. The big N not fond of the idea?

Is it gone? I really hope Nintendo didn't have it taken down. It seems like for all people try to do to preserve gaming's history, companies are dead set on making sure it is lost for no real reason. It was wonderful what they were doing so I hope its not the case.

It's gone. I hope everyone downloaded what they wanted while they had a chance. Nintendo took it down. Maybe they should put up their own archive seeing there is a desire to have access to these magazines

I stupidly did not save these. I actually read one with my daughter (issue #1) and it was a blast! Is there any other places or mirror sites that these are hosted on?

Sad to see Nintendo smack these down, was fun looking through them while I could. I'm sure if anyone truly wanted them they could find them online but I'd like to see an official archive as it would be nice to get some HD copies for a digital reader of some sort.

Guys....I saw some replies to this thread, so I checked them out....and yes, looks like it was taken down.

HOWEVER....I found this....

https://nparchive.net/

It is not every issue, but if you click READ MORE it takes you to the scans.

Happy Labor Day!

If you want to download all the scans before NOA sends the inevitable DMCA without going to each image, use this script on windows in a folder called C:\dlfiles

I saved it as C:\dlfiles\dl.bat
