Nintendo Wii - 13.17 Million Sold! PS3 5.9 Million! Official Financial Reports!
5.9 million is bad? Nintendo and Sony's roles certainly are reversed from where the majority of us thought they'd be a year ago (remember when you though you'd just waltz into a TRU and grab one of the many, many available Wii consoles?), but Sony's doing just fine. They're going to end up like they are with the PSP: with a console that sells and is pretty popular, but with the realization that Nintendo is selling far more than they are. Eventually, the premature predictions of the PS3's demise will go away, and gamers will recognize that it's just a delightful lil' console, even if it isn't going to be the top seller this go 'round.
That's the same thing I was thinking. There was a time when 5.9 million consoles in less than a year was an accomplishment but now that everyone has decided to hate Sony it means its an overwhelming disaster?

Yeah. Pretty much. That sums it up quite nicely. Go Nintendo!

Since you decided to go there, correct me if I'm wrong but I'm fairly certain it took Nintendo more than a year to sell 5.9 million Gamecubes...

If there ever was a time when 5.9 million consoles in a year was good, it was because no one was selling way more than that in the same time frame. Everything is relative to what the competition is doing.

Therefore, 5.9 million can be great at one time and absolutely shitty during another.

And hence it is also considered a failure.

But nice job comparing the PS3 to the Gamecube. We could call them joined at the hip. Butt buddies even!

Don't let Mana Knight know. He might get high blood pressure.

Nothing wrong with being the follower for a generation, especially after leading two.

Did you guys see the operating loss? Gheeze. Sony is going to way Microsoft did with the OG XBox, and to some extent the first year of the 360. Microsoft is actually posting profits again (thanks to Halo) and if they are in the right marketing frame of mind they will probably continue to post profits till the next xbox comes out, where they will have to make some harsh decisions to post future profit.

But really Sony near 1 *billion* in a quarter for a loss? Sony *really* loves their fanbase to bring them that PS triple.

Nintendo on the other hand, laughs at everyone.

Well hey, after finishing 3rd and 2nd in the last 2 cycles, to companies that do more than just make games, it's nice to see Nintendo finally getting that "games making" thing right.

Microsoft lost billions on the Xbox to only barely edge out the GameCube. Nintendo actually made money. I wouldn't consider that coming in third. There is more than just console total sales. Also GCNs are still selling, Xbox isn't. It would be funny if the GCN comes out on top after all the remaining GCNs are sold.

Anyway, these numbers are crazy.
I doubt it. They've been waiting for this day. They'll have enough.

In fact I would bet money and say that Nintendo looked at Super Mario Galaxy, thought that the game was absolutely amazing and would carry them through the Holiday season and simply delayed Brawl so they could work on it some more.
That was my knee-jerk first reaction. And the sad part is that it looks like their diabolic plan might actually work.

I'm honestly concerned that he might have killed himself over this news. :(

It's a US perspective thing, I think. The GC and XB sold roughly the same # of consoles worldwide, but the GC was popular in Japan, where the XB sold as well as $350 boxes of herpes there. They made up their sales in the US, where the XB outsold the GC by a noticeable margin.

Wii only outsold the PS3 2.16 to 1? That's insane, I'm a huge PS3 fanboy and I still find it hard to believe somebody out there buys a PS3 every time two people buy a Wii. I guess being able to walk in to any store and buy one helps.
