NOSTALGIA:The first RPGin a long timeI'm kinda excited for.

I received an out of office reply from Ignition for my art book request. Good timing! Forwarded it along to the PR person mentioned in the email just to make sure it got noticed. Ah well.

My game will also be delivered tomorrow, finished FFIV just in time! Layton can take a break.

I just started RE5. But I'm going to put it down for this because I'm already at Chapter 3 and the story has gone absolutely nowhere. It's not like I'll forget anything if I quit playing for a few weeks.

Got 1st in line at Goozex for this. Won't be requesting it for a while, but good to know I can get it when I want it.

Are you referring to the story in RE5 or Nostalgia?

RE5. It's slow moving even for an RE game.

73% is low as fuck for RPGFan. Oh well, I'll see how it is myself.

IGN gave it a 7.2

It seems most of these reviews just complain about it being the tried and true JRPG formula. I fail to see how that is a bad thing, but that's just me.

Some of us have already played a million of these games, and tried and true doesn't cut it anymore. Your position is understandable, though.

I'm about an hour and a half into it, just moving onto the second location. If nothing else, ship battles are a hell of a lot quicker than in SoA.

It's nothing mindblowing, but it's enjoyable. Hoping to get more useful skills quickly to mix up battles a bit.
Anyone preorder this from Amazon? If so, Ignition will send you a free copy of the artbook that is NOT otherwise available to purchasers of the game. The only other way to get it was to be a member of the press and it was sent to you with your review copy.

How to get it:
1. Preorder on Amazon.
2. Take a screenshot of your order details including order number.
3. Send the screenshot and a mailing address to [email protected].
4. You should get a confirmation email saying they'll send you out the artbook "shortly after release." I did this and got the confirmation email just a couple hours after sending. Quantities limited to 200 artbooks.

Well, crap, if you people had used the ORIGINAL Nostalgia thread (which I was subscribed to) instead of this newer one I might have gotten in on this sooner. Hopefully I still can.

This game really proves the value of Square-Enix's artists and designers. I have not played it but to me the art and in-game graphics aren't so hot.

I didn't even know there was an older thread. Just was posting in the one on the, you know, FIRST PAGE of the board.

Yeah, I was going to shut this one down because it is a newer one but it seems to be more popular, so whatever... But someone had to intentionally ignore the other as it was the current (and thus at or near the top) around when the game came out. And by the way, the other thread is only a few posts down - hardly off the first page or anything ;). The DS board doesn't get much action so even though it has been a whole day it is only 4 threads behind this one.

As for the preorder bonus thing, I emailed that person and got a response that they are out of town till next Weds. Oh well, hopefully they have some left then. If not, oh well, it's not like I even knew about this till you posted it anyway ;).
There was already an announcement that they're out of artbooks. I forget which site it was on.
Awesome. Who knows if I got it since there was no response to two emails last week.

This is probably the most accurate review I've ever seen on RPGamer:
http://www.rpgamer.com/games/other/nds/windnost/reviews/windnoststrev1.html

Agree 100% with pretty much everything in there. I don't even need to post my own impressions. I'll probably finish the game and then toss it on Amazon.

Edit: Shit, Gamespot's review is also excellent:
http://www.gamespot.com/ds/action/n...vert&om_clk=gssummary&tag=summary;read-review

Read both of them and you've pretty much got the whole game right there.

Ugh... those don't sound good.

From rpgamer: "It has no charm to it, no soul, and is bland, boring, dull, sad, and droopy."

I still have my preorder of Sands of Destruction to look forward to in a few months.

Strangely I don't really disagree with that sentiment, but I'm still enjoying it. I look back and say "huh, you're right, the dialogue is so boring and I don't even care what's going on with the story" but then go back in and play a few more hours. It's compelling for some reason I can't really describe.

It's one of those games that when you think about it when you're not playing it, you're highly offended at how much it sucks. But then when you actually play it, it's not too bad. There's nothing truly horrible about the game except the asstastic story, characters, and dialogue, but it is very generic and mediocre.

Just picked up a used copy at my GS earlier on in the week and I have already returned it back to the store. Needless to say I was mildly disappointed with the story and character development. I think I was anticipating this game to be a DS version of Skies of Arcadia, of course I was terribly wrong. The gameplay was bland and the battles were boring. I will pick this up again and maybe finish it once it hits the $10 mark, otherwise its a no sale for me.

That's probably an unfair standard for most games. :D

I got it today and have put it about 3-4 hours so far. It's not great, but it does what it claims - makes me nostalgic. I love old school RPGs, and while this game isn't about to make me forgot (far superior) games like FFIV or VI, I'm having some fun with it. So far the gameplay is a bit shallow, but I'm hoping it'll get just a little bit deeper as I play more - which I'm definitely going to.

The game's formula:

Destitute-man's Skies of Arcadia + Every groan-inducing RPG cliche imaginable

The fact that used copies are already readily obtainable lets me know that I can't be the only one who thinks this game is disappointing. I can't believe people on Gamefaqs are defending the game based on its title.... "B-b-b-b-ut.... it's nostalgic!" This game doesn't make me nostalgic at all; it just makes me wish I were still playing Persona PSP or another great, old-school game that doesn't rely on shamelessly ripping off one of Sega's best RPGs and carbon-copying every JRPG cliche in the book to the point where you can actually predict the plot well in advance.

Has anyone completed the first adventure following your ascension to high altitude?
Finding Scarlett's pet wyvern
Not entirely sure where I'm supposed to look.
I found it
low altitude right near Cairo.
Just did that part too.
Thanks, I had taken her a little too literally in her hint. Just wrapped up the Amazon, now back to London!

Hm, while the reviews aren't bad...they're definitely not enticing me to move this game to active on Goozex. I think I'll wait a bit for it to drop in points. I do want it...but not at 600 points ($30).

I have officially stopped playing this game. I'm pretty sure I'm close to the end too. I am just not feeling it anymore. At all. Why play a game if it's just not fun? Meanwhile, I got Wizard of Oz from Amazon yesterday and I'm having a good time with that.

I think I'm near the end myself, grabbed all the tablets and heading into what I assume is the final dungeon, though I could be wrong.

I quit
when you go into the secret Historical Society area through the sewers.
I'm assuming this is pretty close to where you are currently. I wasn't feeling the game well before that though.

Edit: Which doesn't have a save point before a boss battle. :bomb:

Just beat it, 25:30. Last battle was pretty intense. Keep your health topped off as much as possible. Annoyingly that was the only time I had a dead party member at the end of a battle.

Final verdict and review?
Final verdict: It sucks.
LOL! Even though I wouldn't have expected any less from DoK this still cracked me up! :D
Final verdict and review?
My opinion stayed pretty much the same throughout, but allow me to expand upon it.

The story, while it improved slightly towards the end, wasn't really engaging, but at least served to move you along to the various locations.

I generally prefer more linear dungeons, and in this game they were a must; if you happened to miss a weapon upgrade you could be at a serious disadvantage since treasure chests were the source of literally half of the equipment found during the game.

The overworld was sorta bland, and the airship battles, while a nice break from the party battles, were way too much work for what little reward you got. I happened to stumble upon at least one dungeon that wasn't part of the story, so it was probably either a sign of a lot of sidequests I hadn't gotten around to (I finished with only a C Adventurer's Rank), or just random stuff that was to be found if you wanted to look.

As the game progressed, standard battles became a little more strategic, actually requiring you to start using buffs/debuffs or other skills, which is always nice. For a large portion of it, the battles were pretty button mashy outside of healing. Even so, there were a lot of useless skills just to populate the list, it seemed, and I wish I hadn't wasted any points on a number of them early on.

Overall, if I hadn't had some fun with it, I wouldn't have played for 25 hours; usually I've made a determination by the 5 or 10 hour mark if I like it enough to play through, outside of ridiculous difficulty spikes, which thankfully this game did not have. The only complaint I have there is that some boss battles were won solely on luck - if they happened to spam you with their terrifying full-party attack a few turns in a row, you were toast. But on the bright side, dungeons were small enough or save points plentiful enough that you didn't generally need to worry about losing much progress - except for the unwinnable and unescapable high altitude airship battles, which were the only thing I hated.

Far more than I planned to type, but hopefully helpful!
$20 at Fry's already, hahaha. Hope it goes on Fry's clearance list soon so I can pick one up.
Yeha, I saw it there actually. That pretty much pissed me off as I preordered this from Amazon (and have yet to open it). I doubt it will be on the clearance list any time soon though - look at Rhapsody, for example. It's been cheap ($14.99) at Fry's for a long time but has yet to go on clearance.

On the plus side, though, what do I get in the mail today (Nov. 17th) but a packet from Ignition Entertainment. Yep, it was the art book and soundtrack CD! I had pretty much given up on that considering I sent in that request like, what, 2 weeks ago? At the time all I got back was an automated "I'm out of town" email from the contact person there and then nothing when he supposedly got back. So that's a pleasant surprise at least.

Did you get one Botticus? I think you requested it late like me. If not, it may still be on the way since it was mailed from Glendale, CA.

Oh man! I didn't even know there was a soundtrack...

I think I did some digging but I bet all 200 of what they had after looking at their twitter page is gone :( I wouldn't have minded getting it after it came out since it popped into my gold box.

yo xycury how do i get my profile picture to show up like yours.Im a newbie trying to become a veteran. Talk to me. Vandolizer.

Yessir, I was happy to see it in my mailbox on Monday. I had pretty much given up on it after hearing they were out and not having gotten a response. It's a great little freebie.

I need to ask my mom if this came in the mail yet. I sent it to her address because the Post Office here is total shit and won't deliver packages to my apartment complex.

EDIT: Yeah, she got it.

Now at $9.99 on Amazon (fulfilled by Target), but I can't get myself to pull the trigger after everyone's comments, and especially when it would only go on the backlog anyway, so this is just a heads up for someone else I guess.

I didn't think it was that bad. Doesn't take any risks, is pretty cliched and generic.

If you're looking for JRPG comfort food, you could do worse.
Just picked it up for $13.33 shipped :)
Me too. I'm excited that a few those long-awaited, yet eventually disappointing, rpgs are coming down in price.

I picked up glory of Heracles a few weeks back for cheap at GS and am liking it. Now, I need to wait for the eventual sub $15 deal on Sands of Destruction ... and hopefully smt: strange journey in a few months (which I'll dig if it is stylistically close to Devil Summoner).
