DD-WRT is prolly one of the best firmware out there for home routers, making a measly $40 routers act like the big boy $400 routers. I guess for home users the biggest thing is the packet shaping/QOS feature that lets your prioritize traffic. So you could setup games and voip to always take bandwidth away from P2P traffic (Bittorrent, Sharazza, Limewire, etc...), allowing you to play video games or talk clearly over the internet while you download or someone else browses the web.
It also has other featurs, like kaid support that runs
Xbox Kai on the router itself, OpenVPN that lets your bridge a network connection over the internet, and quite a bit more.
