Now that you've got a FON router, check this out!

0.7.0r4 is what mine shipped with. I'm on the first fis step as we speak. Pumpkin didn't want to work but I found a different tfpt server that worked.

I'lll admit, I'm not hugely knowledgeable about wireless/wifi.....Why do this? What's the benefit/features?

DD-WRT is prolly one of the best firmware out there for home routers, making a measly $40 routers act like the big boy $400 routers. I guess for home users the biggest thing is the packet shaping/QOS feature that lets your prioritize traffic. So you could setup games and voip to always take bandwidth away from P2P traffic (Bittorrent, Sharazza, Limewire, etc...), allowing you to play video games or talk clearly over the internet while you download or someone else browses the web.

It also has other featurs, like kaid support that runs Xbox Kai on the router itself, OpenVPN that lets your bridge a network connection over the internet, and quite a bit more.

DrNo posted why you would do this. In short, it makes a cheap router capable of doing the things an expensive router does.
 
Turns a locked down router that breaks many ISPs EULA into your own personal biyatch. Just need to replace that POS antennea.

No doubt. Changing the antennea is a good idea and with the hacked firmware you also get to tell that mother f'kr to increase the amount of power that is used to broadcast. This should help increase the effective range but at the trade of off making your signal dirtier. If you do this, just make sure you don't go over 75 (some people say 100, but 75 is a safe number and each router works differently). Going too high will cause your router to overheat, so only do this if you need to.

One question - can I use this as a wireless access point, as in a wireless extension? I already have wireless in my house, but if I hooked this up somewhere in my house, could I have it connect to my original wireless and connect to the FON to access the internet? I hope that made sense...
 
With the DD-WRT firmware you can do something called WDS (Wireless Distribution System) where it will act as a wireless repeter (extender) or you could buy a bridge and connect it in the WAN port.

Well with what DrNo said, it should change the signal from asking you to enter a login password to just a regular wifi signal. So feasibly it should work with the DS but I've not yet even tried changing the firmware.
