Off to Russia - wish me luck! (updated - back now)

Because you have a cool avatar, I wish you the best. :D

Our son knows, as much as a four-year-old can understand.

I was guessing that you'd likely be getting children at around that age... young enough to still transition well to a new life, but not so old that they'll have developed deep attachments to thier previous home.

That's much more reasonable in my mind than all of the people that go out of their way and demand babies.

I'm sure there will be many points along the way where he'll have questions, but we talk about it and show him on the globe and stuff.

I assume you just recently had one of these discusssions with him, having decided to adopt again.

I think it's healthier that way, and it should be something that's discussed in the open and not hidden.

That's the healthiest way to deal with it, I think.

That's how people get educated about things.

Again, that's just about the healthiest mindset I can think of.

Good for you. I hope your trip and your children's acclimation to thier new lives (either in a new place, or with a new sibling) goes without incident.

That's real cool.. what you're doing. I bid you good luck. I'm Russian myself (well I'm from Kiev actually, but back then it was all the same). Russia's an interesting place... just don't seem too American when out in public :)

Best wishes to you and your family on the wonderful new addition. I hope all goes smoothly with the flight, paperwork, everything.

If you can, how about some pictures?

I seem to be involved in every thread whether I'm posting in it or not.

Wherever i see 10 year old girls whoring themselves out... Wherever prepubescant girls get put in compromising positions... Wherever someone mentions picking girls up at birth... We think of you.

Well, I'm back and extremly tired.

Most of the trip was great. We got to visit her for a little over an hour each day. She is very cute and incredibly sweet. She seemed to take a real liking to me, which was great since you never know what the reaction will be given that there aren't any men working at the orphanage.

Unfortunately I got sick on the last day and didn't get to visit. My wife still went and got more pictures and video though. I still wasn't feeling all that great yesterday and spent the day in cars, airports and planes which sucked. Our last flight left an hour and a half late and we didn't end up getting home until after 1am (we started the day at 7:30am Moscow time, which is 11:30pm here in Ohio).

Now we have to wait for our court date in Moscow, which should be somewhere in the first half of September. Hopefully all will go well, I'll post another update when I found out more although it may be a month or so before we hear anything.

Thanks for all the well-wishes. Take care everyone!

In as innocent a way as possible, let me ask if you feel comfortable (what with sblymnl) posting pictures of your kids? Curiosity at it's best.

Last time I had a court date in moscow was...uh nevermind. oh Good times.

BTW good luck. Many questions though if you don't mind. I am just wondering. Will you tell the child it's russian and that it's adopted. Also will you teach both languages. Or raise it like a great American child.

Good luck my friend.

Yes, we're being honest about their backgrounds. I figure being adopted isn't anything someone should be embarassed about, and hiding it only hurts awareness and education. Luckily there have been some big names in recent years that are known by the public to be adopted, such as Dave Thomas and Steve Jobs.

Unfortunately, we don't speak Russian so we can't teach them. My wife actually has taught herself a fair amount of phrases, but still not enough for that. I would encourage them to learn it if the opportunity became available though. It's funny, I certainly didn't have any aspirations of 'Amercanizing' our son, but it sort of happens automatically from living here. That hit me one day as I put him to bed and he layed there on his Spider-man pillow case in his Buzz Lightyear pajamas. I'm sure he'll be more interested in the Russian part of his heritage when he's older, right now he's busy being a kid. Once we get our daughter home it will be interesting to see how different it is having a little girl.
