OFFICIAL 2005 Yardsale Thread

Not open for further replies.
I got to say it's nice to see people getting in on cheapass yardsale finds. It's pretty cool to see cheapassgamers inspired by this thread that have'nt ever done any yardsailing start doing it and make some decent scores. Props to evilmax for starting this thread and props to everyone that's added their tips and techniques. After rereading this entire thread ( I actually forgot about some of the deals I scored ) I realize that there is a lot of information and inspiration plastered within it's pages. I hope others will take notice and learn the ways of the yardsale cheapass.

Hopefully the cheapass powers that be will let this thread go beyond the 500 post limit seeing as how it is somewhat of an EDUCATIONAL tool for cheapassgamers
nes stuff will probably be sold...been looking to sell my nes games not add to it;)
Oh, man Desert Commander! I used to have SO much fun playing that with my friends. You should give that one a try against a friend if you've never played it. It's very rudeimentary compared to today's tactical games, but I bet it withstands the test of time (maybe).

Why not just start a new one?

I keep meaning to go out every Saturday morning, but I always seem to just not wake up until 10 AMish, and by that point, I figure it's not really worth it. Though next Saturday, I may get up early and go out, since it'll be my last weekend before I head back to college that Sunday. See if I can find anything.

If your waking up late, your yeard sale chances may be shot. But go ahead and check out the local pawn shops, you can sometimes get some nice scores there. Plus they usually open around 10-11.

Heh, you read my mind snot. I've had this in mind since we hit 400 posts.
Why not just start a new one?
The season is really starting to slow down, and this one thread has lasted us over 4 months already. I'd really like to keep one thread per year for organizational purposes (unless things get crazy next year, god willing), but also because I don't see that many posts coming in until it dies.

I figure keep this one open until December 31, 2005 (it'll have been stagnant for quite some time I would suspect anyway). We'll probably end 700-800 posts, and then we can have 1 full thread of 2005, 1 complete thread.

If we started a new one now, it'd probably get only 200 posts since it's so late in the season. No reason for unneccessary segmentation.

I wasn't going to say anything about if in hopes of the mods missing it or not caring (there's plenty of other deal threads that have been over 500 for months now, and our meager little thread likely won't ever hit 1,000). So here's hoping they let it slide :) .

I feel you on the waking up early, it was the worst part of the whole thing for the first few weeks, but I'm used to it now.

If you haven't already, I recommend you try taking a dose of Simply Sleep (Safe, cheap, non-addicting, OTC, made by Tylenol, won't hurt you) at around 9 or 10 PM, and you'll fall asleep about an hour later. This way, you're much less likely to sleep through your alarm the next morning. And it doesn't completely disrupt your sleep pattern if you want to go to bed late the next night either.

Hope to see you get out next week, the more the merrier!

Well I went to the kids house to pick up the SP about a 10 minute drive and the little bastard was'nt home. I'm not going to pursue this deal any further. Little ratshit. Anyway stopped at a local flea market and came across this

100_0163.jpg.w300h200.jpg

complete Atari 2600 2 controllers all hookups and 12 games all complete and in pristine condition except for the boxing which was cart only.

Pac man
Tennis
Boxing
Combat
Carnival
Berzerk
Demon Attack
Riddle of the Sphinx
Dark Caverns
Lock and chase
Space attack
Air raiders

The lady wanted $25. I talked her down to $10 which was still a little pricey for my liking but considering the system was immaculate and the games were all complete (I do not see too many complete atari games with boxes in this kind of minty condition) it was worth it.

made a good deal imo, and used the cash in face deal, 20 genesis games, all complete, three controlers and systym for 20 dollars, she wanted 35 to start, so i walked around and came back wit 20 in hand and said (proudly puttng the 20 in her face) will you do 20, she said yes.

i dont mind paying what amoounts to a dollar a game, cuz at worst case scenario i break even on their value, the mag i use "video game collector" puts today haul at 150 dollars so i am happy

i will have to say i am getting woried, i have 7 genesis sitting in my closet, i have already given away 5, i also have a shit load of sonic 2, god forbid this game is in every lot i buy

Only video game find of note for me was Super Metroid for $1. At a place with lots of fairly overpriced stuff, but I guess they didn't know that some old games are still worth something.

Made it to the pawn shop I hit every month or so with cheap DVDs and picked up 6 for $11

28 Days Later (SE)
Fear Dot Com
Starship Troopers 2 (SE I think)
Godzilla (the original)
couple others

I wish more pawn shops priced like that :)

Haven't hit up any yard sales yet, but I did hit up quite a few pawn shops this week and got some decent to good deals:

Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance (PS2), complete - $10
Prince of Persia 2: Warrior Withing (PS2), complete - $10
GTA San Andreas (PS2), complete - $20
Power Stone 2 (DC), manual and disc only - $3
Illbleed (DC), complete - $3
Mario Party 6 (GC), in big box with mic but missing manual - $15
Kirby's Dream Land 3 (SNES), cart only - $7
Silent Bomber (PSX), complete - $6

Few others, but those were the better ones, especially Power Stone 2. I need to investigate some yard sales, but just haven't gotten around to it yet.

Picked up a couple of more things today.

Garage sale was advertised to start at 10am and it said there was a playstaion with a stack of games for $10. So I get there about 5-10 minutes early. PS is already gone, but I picked up a mint condition "mini" SNES with 3 official controllers and Super Mario World, Street Fighter 2 and Kablooey for $15.

He also had a gameless Genisis for $5, but I left it for someone else since I was never a big genisis fan and it looked a little too dirty for me.

There was also a Sega master system with the box, although the box was quite beat up. It was $20, so I passed on that one as well since I wasn't really sure of the value and I don't really care for anything Sega that is before the Saturn.

Also Scored a mint Panzer Dragoon for saturn for $14, still has the foam inside and the manual looks untouched. Seems like a decent deal.

This is my first weekend of garage sale hunting, going to have to go again.

I bought a Nintendo & about 30 games at a yardsale about a month ago that actually included 4 copies of SMB/Duck hunt :)

I snagged a pretty good deal today. At a local Goodwill warehouse store, they were putting out some new stuff and I picked up an NES with one controller, RF Unit, power adapter and one game (F15 Strike Eagle) for $5. The NES had the flashing light issue (game not being recognized) but it just needed the console contacts cleaned off then it was working fine. :}

Got a working dreamcast, 2 controllers, a memory card, a light gun, shenmue disk only 1 through 4 for 20 bucks. Need to hit these places more often.

Me

Well, after reading this thread and some of the pickups people had made (A dreamcast display...who would have thought...), I figured I'd go out today and swing around a few of the local pawn shops to see what I could find.

Talk about a bunch of idiots with their overpriced games...I found a grand total of TWO out of ten shops that sold anything for what it was honestly worth.

I did pick up 3 games though for 5 bucks a piece...Xenogears and Parasite Eve 1/2. I guess I'd call it a success...but I'm looking forward to giving some garage sales a run.

I haven't had much luck with the pawn shops in my area. They only take recent stuff and most isn't that great. My finds have been at garage sales, most of which were by chance.

$15 for those three games is a good find. I really enjoyed xenogears.

Yeah, I got lucky on Xenogears...I had spotted Parasite Eve 1/2 right away, and spotted Xenogears without a price tag on it. Fortunately, every game was tagged 4.95, so I asked the guy if the unmarked ones were the same price. Lucked out, and all three were mint. Discs hardly have a scratch, and manuals don't look like they were ever touched.

Yeah, pawn shops around here have games/etc. priced like they want you to give them your first born to purchase em. I've seen too many stores with prices higher than what I can find some of the games for NEW in game stores...DUH!

most pawn shops have games all priced the same. Meaning a copy of Mario party 5 would be worth the same as a jam pack. Serious. but usually they have decent prices on nes games. i was once at this one place that had sega saturn games for like 20 bucks a pop. Like crappy ones too.

I've always wonderd if Goodwill has standardized prices throughout their store, or it it's just up to the whim of whoevers working the pricetag gun that day. I've seen great deals like SNES and NES consoles with their original wires for 10 dollars or even less at some stores, but then other stores might want $25+ for console only. The last time I hit up Goodwill over here, they wanted 45 bucks for a console only PSX, no wires, no controllers, no games, just a ratty beat up console.

I'm on the hunt, it's a beautiful day in the state of lethal toxins and I'm feeling lucky. Good luck fellow bargain hunters

couple of good bargains today

100_0164.jpg.w300h200.jpg

first sale I hit 1/2 mile from home
NES w/ 2 controllers and AC adaptor
Ninja Gaiden
Marble Madness
Ghostbusters
Mag Max
Jaws
Double Dragon - Sega MS
PAID - $2 - I offered up $2 to the kid running the sale for everything, the stuff was all scattered with a bunch of other junk

Taz Alarm clock
game genie NES
PAID - $1 - I offered a $1 to the lady who accepted. All proceeds for the sale went to Breast Cancer research and there was a donation bowl that I dropped an Abe in. So this stop was not much of a bargain overall, but I felt good that I contributed to a worthy cause.

Stephen King / Nightmares in the Sky HC (very cool book on gargoyles and grotesques tons of pictures)
PAID - $3 - The guy wanted $5. I offered $2, He came back with $4, I said lets make it $3 as I pulled the cash from my pocket and extended it towards him. He scoffed it up. I would have paid up to $10 for this as I've been wanting it for some time

Game Boy Advance w/ case
Ross Perot Squiggly pen sealed in a minty package
Paid - $1.50 - Yeh that's not a type-o. I walked up and spotted the pen, the lady said it was $1 unless I had .50 because she had no change. Then as I went to pay her I spotted the GBA w/ case I asked her how much. She replied without hesitation $1 for the game and case. I forked over the cash rapidly. I have games and batteries in my car and loaded up the GBA and it worked flawlessly. Keeping batteries in your car to check functionality of hand held devices and such is a good idea. Evilmax you might want to put this tip in the first post. After this score I thought I just had some good Karma coming back to me for dropping $5 in the donation bowl earlier

Did my first somewhat serious garage saling in awhile, and got a couple of nice deals.
First find, for $5 total:
CD: David Bowie-Space Oddity
DVD: The Quiet American (2002)
Book: Hitchcock by Francois Truffaut

Second find:
CD: Pulp Fiction soundtrack for 25 cents.

Good tip, I never thought of that! Done and done.
sure hope the breast cancer funds REALLY went to it.
I think it was legit. There was a poster with pictures of someones mother or aunt or something and a bunch of nice women running the sale. Nothing was overpriced and they all thanked me and said have a good day.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Today was our 20th week out! We hit 33 sales today, which brought our total-number-of-sales-hit-this-season to over 500 sales!

The 3DO stuff was at a house on the side of a highway (RT 1). I saw the system and controller on top of a box, and quickly put my hands on it so that nobody else would take it. I found the lady who was running it, and asked how much she wanted. "For everything?" she asked. I thought this was weird, because what would i do, just buy the controller or something? So I said "yeah", and she said "Hrm. $5 for both?" ...."Both, what? There's 2 systems?" "Yup!" she happily answered, and upon inspection, there was. The box still has a $400 pricetag from Babbages on it, and is in fairly decent shape (I had to refold/shape the bottom, but it looks okay). I found Madden by powering them up and opening the trays. They both powered on ok, I'll probably test them tonight (I'd never seen a 3DO before in real life before today.) One system and controller are pretty dirty but all of the other stuff is pretty good.

Saw an After Burner arcade cabinet today. It had an 8-by-11 sign on it that said "50 cents a play, 3 for a dollar" on it. I asked if they were selling it but they weren't. What kind of dicks put out an arcade cabinet for their yardsale, with no intentions to sell it, and then charge you to use it!? Dicks!

Saw a knee-high huge novelty Lego mini-fig at that same sale. They marked it as $4, but from the looks of the pay-for-play arcade cabinet, I doubt they would've been talked down, so we passed.

20 weeks! 500 sales! It's been a hell of a season, and we still have a few weeks left. Good luck everyone!

Went to about 20 garage sales today. On the last one, saw a comix zone complete for Genesis, $.50. She asked if I was into older games, I replied yes, and she came out with about 50 Nintendo Games for $5.00. Havent looked at all of them but saw some good ones (Dodge Ball, River City, Bubble Bobble, Metroid), and a Dreamcast with 2 contollers (one not by Sega) and 2 games for $10.

I just didn't see myself going through the trouble of selling them or anything =\
I guess I know better for next time though ^_^

I checked out about 17 Sales today. Ended up spending $9.60 total.

I picked this up for $9.00
Atari.jpg

Atari2600 Console
Power Cord
Joystick
Paddles
Old School Antenna Connection
and 1 Game (Pole Position)

And it all works perfectly!

Also picked up a Coaxial Cable signal booster for 50cents. Ended up not really working... oh well.

And the last 10 cents was spent on a cup of lemonade some little girl was selling during her parents garage sale.

How do you people think I made out on that Atari? Is $9.00 too much for one?

Only two other gaming related items were found through the day... Some lady was trying to sell a Playstation console with 32 games for $100.00 The games were pretty horrible... stuff like Power Shovel and other really cheap ass games. At a different sale I also saw a Crazy Kong Arcade Game with it's original cabinet and everything. The people were trying to sell it for $300.00 I have no idea about Arcade Game prices and didn't feel like dropping $300.00 so I didn't even think twice about passing that.

Picked up a 2600 also. Paid $5.00. 4 Games, all hook-ups, paddles, but no joystick. No big deal. This is my second 2600 and I have extra sticks.

PC Who Shot Johnny Rock - .25
PC World of Warcraft - $2

No story behind Who Shot Johnny Rock. Went across the street to see an older couple that had some PC games for sale mostly FPS anywere from a year to afew years old $2-3 each saw World of Warcraft and was surprised asked them about it and they said it was their son's or grandson's (can't remember which) They had no idea about the world of online gaming & I asked them if they would do 2 and they said ok. The game was in perfect condition & came with everything I'm thinking that the owner didn't like it or didn't relize you had to pay to play online & just wanted to get rid of it. I also saw some records and was thinking about getting a Black Sabbath - Masters of Reality record but they said they wanted $1 and I didn't feel like haggling since I knew I wouldn't use it and would just be getting it to have it.

Dreamcast system only (broken)
Nintendo 64 with boomerang controller & power supply (4 Meg Expansion included)
$2 for both

I saw both of these systems at a sale with no games with them or any prices. I asked about the systems & if they worked and the lady said that they were her brother's she called him up asked if they worked and how much & he said didn't know & $2. The Dreamcast didn't work wouldn't read games & also had the old resetting problem. I didn't think to check for a 4 meg expansion but after I took a picture of the system I was happy to see that it did have a 4 meg expansion included :D

I can't remember if it's been mentioned or is one of the tips in the 1st post of this thread but if not it's always a good idea to try and remember to check NES systems to see if they has a game in the system & to check for 4 meg expansions in N64s. As these things are very simple ideas yet very easy to forget about when yardsale(ing).

7 M.U.S.C.L.E. figures - .10

I'm sure afew others here remember these from back in the day for only a dime I couldn't pass this up

http://www.x-entertainment.com/messages/musc.html

Wolfenstein 3D for Mac - .10

No story for this one really

The Osbournes Season 1 Censored DVD - $2

No story to this one either asked $2 and I figured it was good enough

WWF Summerslam 1999 DVD - $2

I wanted to buy another wrestling DVD (No Mercy 2001) if I could get a price break but the lady said she couldn't as it belonged to someone who wasen't around so I only went with Summerslam as I remember it being pretty good that year and couldn't resist when I saw that it had a match with Al Snow from when he had that little dog he used to carry around (Pepper)

Foo Fighters - Self Titled tape - .25

Said .50 got for .25 it was kind of funny cuase the lady said that her son would probably shot her for doing .25

1 Genesis Ghetto Ass Cadash with no manual - $1

1st yardsale I hit up said GameCube games in the paper got to the sale didn't see a single GameCube game when I asked about the GameCube stuff the lady said that her brother decided he wanted them so they were all sold before the sale even started....smart people here  Afew big ladies at this sale white trash at it's best, the one lady had a mustashe growing in to give you an idea what I was dealing with here :D I did see a genesis 3 in a box with about a dozen games pretty beat up all crap games only desent stuff I saw was Aliens 3, Arrowflash & Cadash. I asked how much for Cadash $1 & I offered $5 for the whole lot & showed the money, said she wanted to sell it for $10 no chance in hell I would have paid more then $5 for this ghetto lot I was actually thinking she did me a favor not letting me have it for $5. One of the controllers even had the back plastic piece broken off.

PS2 Max Payne
PS1 Tekken big case non-grestest hits big school case
$3 for both

was just after 11:30 when I got to this sale picked up both of these games & asked the guy if he would do both for $3 as they each said $5 on them. The guy pointed out that they were each $5 as if $3 was cutting alittle to low to which I said would you do Max Payne at least for $3 which he was cool with then he just said you can just have them both for $3 and basicly said that the games were pretty much worth nothing as I'm sure he was figuring after seeing them sit all morning with a price of $5 & not going anywhere fast.

PS2 Dark Cloud 2 - $2 (I think this was meant to be 7 but looked like a 2)
PS2 Hack Infection bonus DVD included - $5
PS1 Crash Bash (GH) - $1
GB Mega Man - $1
GBC Pokemon Silver (Missing Sticker) - $1
GBC Super Mario Bros. Deluxe - $1
GBC Dragon Warrior Monsters - $1
N64 Gauntlet Legends - $1
N64 Pokemon Puzzle League - $1

I found this sale just afew sales & afew blocks away from where I got my ghetto copy of Cadash. It was unadvertised AFAIK or at least didn't mention video games if it was advertised in the paper. It was kind of funny as I was driving by saw a sign out in front of the one house & though maybe I should look into it. I pulled over at a sale about half a block past this house to find nothing figured I'd walk back to what was up at this house. I noticed that they took the sign down but I saw a kid coming from the backyard so I asked him if they were having a yardsale in the backyard and he said yep. Only reason I can think that they took the sign down (if I wasen't seeing shit & I really did see a sign that was taken down) was that they were still setting stuff up set up the sign then had a change of heart & decided to take the sign back as to not attract people to the yardsale yet so they wouldn't be flogged with people while finishing up on setting up everything for sale. They had all the stuff set up on picnic tables & I did take notice to the fact that one or two of the tables were empty & that maybe they were gonna be bringing out more stuff to fill them up. I was probably the first one to the sale as it was about 8:30 & was the only one at the sale. This was easily the best sale I saw overall all weekend videogame wise. $1 PSX games, $1 N64 games $3 N64 with afew controllers & power supply but no AV cable, non of the PS2 games over $5 except for Dark Cloud 2 which I think was suppose to be $7 but looked like a 2 as the kid was also selling Dark Could (GH) for $5. Both Prince of Persia games for the PS2 at $5 & amougnst the PS1 games IIRC he had all the Spyro games at $1....the kind of prices that you go hunting at yardsales for!!! I picked up all the games I have listed above except the Pokemon Puzzle league game & added it up to $13 in my head, assuming that Dark Cloud 2 was meant to be $2 not $7. The same kid that was coming from the backyard earlier that I asked if they were having a yardsale to actually ended up being the kid that owned the games & was selling them I asked him if he would do all those games (minus the pokemon puzzle) for $10 and he said sure. Then I decided to grab Pokemon Puzzle League for another dollar & was on my way so the prices I have listed above from this sale were the asking price ($14) but I actually paid $11.

Total Spent - $23.70

Sorry if the stories are abit hard to follow as English was never my best class :) but I think & hope that I did good enough for one reading to follow even if I don't have it put together well enough to get me a good grade if it was something I was doing for an english class.

Also sorry about the glare on the pictures I need to figure something out to do better on taking them as I noticed some pretty good glaze (especially on Tekken)
