Official 2012 Yard Sale Thread

Stopped at a yard sale today during my lunch (it was strange because no one has yard sales in the middle of the week around here). The people had obviously priced everything according to eBay prices and they actually had a small sign that said "ALL PRICES FIRM". After seeing some older DVDs marked $9 each, I just shook my head and got back in the car.

How did a group that didn't exist during the last election vote for Bush?

Obama paid $162k in taxes, donated $172k to charity, on an income of $790k. Most of that income came from his book.

Unless you meant Romney, who paid $3.2 million in taxes.

For someone criticizing about ignorance, well, I don't even....
The article I pulled up was him and his wife and said $453,770, regardless of the number (I only searched so I wasn't pulling something out of my ass) he's still in a completely different financial situation than the people who think they "relate" to him. If a democratic candidate makes 2 million a year and a republican candidate makes 50 million a year, it doesn't really matter, neither can really relate to someone who makes $45,000 a year. That was my point.

Despite the snarky comment I used to contrast schultzed's statement, I'm not the evil hardcore conservative type that you're looking to wage a war on, so you might as well holster those liberal guns ;).

Well, I'll just post my two most recent finds.

DSC04895.jpg

$40. Yes, I overpaid. A lot. But in my defense, with the GameStop 7/$35 thing, I can make a few dollars off the games and I got the controller for free (something I was going to buy at GameStop for $20.)

DSC04896.jpg

DSC04897.jpg

My real score, $40 for all. All systems have all cords and controllers. N64 and GC CIB. And those games. I was thinking about keeping Zelda Collector's and N64 OoT and Majora's Mask for myself. Not sure if I will, but maybe. Overall though, I think this is a pretty great find.
yay for yard sale theft?
Yeah, I don't condone what he did btw, I'm just reporting that he did it. I personally never would have done that, but my brother is kinda of an idiot sometimes, so I'm not surprised he did.

Although who leaves a sale unattended like that!?

One sale I went to had a big sign that read:

"This is a different kind of yard sale, take whatever you want and feel free to pay what you want and leave the money in the green birdhouse on the porch"

I took a GBA Player and wires for a Gamecube System (but left the system, it was beyond repair filthy) and put 2 bucks in the birdhouse. Strangest sale I've ever been to.

At least it wasn't a sale like this:

http://www.cbc.ca/news/story/2010/08/06/sarnia-impromptu-garage-sale-bandit-100806.html

And a few weeks ago, we had a bag sale at our house. Fill a shopping bag with stuff on tarps for $3, two bags for $5. More expensive stuff was on the porch and priced separately. We made a killing that day, and people were going apeshit over it, because every 30 minutes or so, I'd bring out another bin or two and dump it on the tarps.

It was all left-over flea market junk, stuff we could have made money off of, but it wasn't worth the time or space it was taking up to deal with.

Bag sale is totally the way to go if you want to get rid of stuff and don't care about pricing each item individually and want to get rid of a lot of junk. You can make money this way because you usually get money from each customer instead of people walking away with nothing, also those 25 cent and 10 cent items will add up over the course of a day.

I think a lot of people don't buy because items are never priced, as a customer I have no way of knowing if you want $20 for an item or 25 cents and if I am not that interested I might not ask especially if the rest of the items are overpriced.

Went to two sales advertising records:

First one had 2 Herb Alpert & Tijuana Brass records I didn't own. $0.50 total.

Second had: another Herb Alpert record, best of Carly Simon, Miami Vice soundtrack, Aristocats soundtrack, Hall and Oates, and two others I don't remember. $3 total.

Had to do a little driving out of my way as I was heading to work, but it was worth it.

This is an awesome haul.

What are the SNES games?

I see Super Metroid, DK Country, Earthworm Jim, Zelda . . . what is in the upper right?

 Now that takes balls to not only break into a house, but they to sell off the items from the home in the front yard of the house you just broke into. One thing that amuses me most though is that neighbors just watched this guy selling all the stuff outta this garage for a couple of hours and did NOTHING!?!?!?

Really? That's the nuttiest part of that story to me.

Anyway, I had a question regarding yard saling stuff. We just cleaned out our kitchen cupboards of tons of old mugs, plates n other stuff. If I were to sell em at a yard sale, what do you think would be a good price for items? Or should I just do a bag sale? Unfortunately most of the stuff is covered in dust since it'd been in the cabinets since we moved here. We've used the same coffee mugs & plates for years, so the rest of this is just stuff we'll never use.

Aladdin. Plus I have The Lion King from this sale somewhere off screen.

Oh and best part, this sale doesn't even start until Thursday.

I have another box of stuff I got from another sale. Might take pics.

That stuff won't sell for more than 25 cents a piece over here, or maybe $2 a set, most yard sales I go to have tons of this stuff but it doesn't sell, if you are going to have just a glassware and kitchenware sale, then I wouldn't even bother. I mean if you have a free weekend, live on a busy street, and don't mind setting it up, but I wouldn't pay for an ad in the paper for this kind of sale if that is all you have cause you probably won't make much. Over here an ad is $29 a weekend, which is really high for just a yard sale ad. I don't think a bag sale is good for this type of stuff, its better for clothes or stuff you can shove into a bag, which isn't glassware. You could however do prices like 25 cents each or 5 for a dollar, that works really well to get people to buy more stuff and get it out of your hands.
Bag sale huh. I'm going to have to try that out in our next yard sale. Do you let people overflow?
Yeah, we weren't very strict. Hell, during the last two hours of the second day, we dropped it to a buck a bag. Our main goal was to get rid of stuff, making some money on that junk was a bonus.

ahhhh!!! 4 sales advertise games tomorrow...All starting at 8 am and grouped in pairs on opposite sides of town. I know which 2 I am going to hit, but it kills me to miss out on the other 2. Good luck everyone!

Doesn't really surprise me. A lot of people these days like to keep to themselves and they often don't get to know their neighbors. I've lived in my current house for over two years and I haven't formally met a single person in my neighborhood. I knocked on the next-door neighbor's house for the second time ever yesterday (my kid locked me out of the house and I needed help), but there was no answer, so I still haven't met them. Aside from two of the guys, I can't even recall what any of them look like. But in my defense, there are about 15 people living in that house.

Anyway, my point is: if the same thing happened with one of our neighbors, I would be none the wiser. And if it happened to us, I think they'd be just as oblivious. For what it's worth, at our old apartment, we were actually friends with some of our neighbors and we always looked out for each other...but we were all squished together, so we ran into each other everyday and had more incentive to get along.

Thanks for the advice. I do have some other stuff I'd likely consider selling, but chances are I wouldn't want yard sale prices for it. I have a few of those remote control cars from the Black Ops Prestige bundles in the box the sets came in still. I'd probably want like $30 for one with the medal & box included(but not the steelbook case).

If you have any larger or higher priced items, you are better off listing them on ebay or craigslist or finding a buyer through some other means at least around here. I sold a single DVD for like $30 on ebay but if I marked it $20-30 at a yard sale people would think I was nuts and would just leave my sale. The yard sale is a completely different market than ebay so you have to price accordingly. There is nothing that makes people leave a sale faster than tons of overpriced or ebay priced items. Most people come to yard sales with change or under $10 in their pockets so you have to work with that. People expect 25 cents, 50 cents and $1 items. The chances of people spending $30 out of their pocket for a luxury item like a remote control car are slim to none at a yard sale, at least here. They will spend for furniture or appliances but those are usually people who come out looking for something specific. If you have furniture then your best bet is to place an ad on craigslist for the piece separately and then say that the piece is viewable at yard sale on so and so date.

OH MAI GOD. This is like a dream come true. Hope I can get some good deals here..,

I hate you and everyone else who finds these great bundles.
This was today and typical of what I get:

Guy wants $20 for whole box . . . I got it for $15.

Systems:

No power adapter or hookup . . . controllers are poor--was happy to see expanded memory.

No power adapter

Hookup but no power adapter. Controller is ugly. Spare PC controller and Atari joystick

Games:

Nothing great . . . a few B-list.

Granted $15 is a good deal but I just can't get a good bundle.
Guy said he was hanging onto his SNES . . . dang.

You've got good NES/n64 starter set material there; maybe $50 per bundle if you Craigslist during the holidays.

I was pretty excited . . . I bought it quickly after seeing the N64 and NES and Goldeneye . . . but I didn't dig into it until later and I was hoping for more/better games in the box. Why can't I get a Mario Kart, Super Smash, and Mario Party???

I had a busy day today. I just came out of a Papajohns coma a few minutes ago. I remember buying lots of stuff, some of it being games. At this rate I will not post them for another month. Nice box lot!

Yeah, that's still a good deal for $15.

I think I'm going to post pics of my other find. Maybe tonight, maybe tomorrow. I don't know. If I have time before work maybe?

I would've been ecstatic to find a bundle like that. Period. Around here people would ask heyday retail price for stuff like that.

Well, hopefully I'll have some luck this weekend. Gonna take a road trip through some small IL towns.

Here's my other pick up. Everything pictured totals about $50. Not as good of a pick up as my other one, but it's okay, kinda. All systems have all cords and 3-4 controllers.

Honestly, for $50, was this a good deal at all? I personally feel like I really overpaid.

To and from work yesterday, I noticed an unusual amount of sales for a Thursday. Of course, being at work, I didn't have time to stop at any of them. I completely overlooked the fact that it's the 100 mile More on 34 sale.

I'll be heading out as soon as my bank opens. Wish me luck!

I say yes. Mario Party 2 alone is worth 20-25 online. If there's expansions packs in the N64s you got a VERY good deal.

Bought this box of LEGOs for $20!!!! There has to be at least 800-1000 pieces!!!! My future kids are going to be ****ing SPOILED. Also bought the 360 controller for $1, and the games were $4 total. PS2 controller was free.

I seriously need a lesson in legos. I saw some small rectangle (shoebox) sized (12x4x4) rubbermaids filled with them for 4.99 at savers. They were mixed sets, but I have a feeling I should have bought them.

The money is in the minifigs. Pieces aren't worth much except for weight mostly.

I did and it seems they go for $2-$5 per pound. I was curious if there is a rule of thumb rate in the lego community. Or if it is better to split them up by color or whatever. No need to be a dick.

Yeah, I would say $4-5 a pound sounds about right. Though if you look closely at Ferrari Racer's find, he has a Creator Beach House 4996...that's about $100 new. In a case like that it might make sense to pay more if you think you have all the pieces (or a few disassembled sets of interest)

Luckily, I only work Monday-Thursday which leaves the weekends open for garage sales! Which towns are you hitting up? I had a very mild day. It was super hot and I was by myself so I got bored quickly. I only saw two video games all day and they were sports. It seems like all I ever see nowadays are The Sims games and their expansions. I haven't seen anything PS2/Xbox/GC or newer in a LONG time. It's getting really frustrating.

I did get Batman and Joker Whacky Wobbler bobbleheads still in the box for $2 each. Those were awesome.

My biggest find of the day actually came at a pawn shop later on. 3DS for $50. :bouncy:

For $1 total I got...

Grand Theft Auto 2 for the PSOne CIB. (Have a copy of it already, but for the price I bought another so my dad can keep the other.)

THUG 2 for the PS2 disc only (Have a CIB copy of it for the 360, grabbed it for my dad's PS2 and for my nephews to play.)

Finally, Marvel vs. Capcom 2 disc only for the PS2. (Bought it originally planning to flip it, but since it's disc only I may just keep a hold of it. The disc is pretty scratched, but looks playable.)

Went to a few sales today that I found advertised on one of our local city's news sites. All had video games in ther description. One had a bunch of shovelware wii and ds games for $5 each....and mario kart for DS for $10 but another guy had it in his hands. I wouldnt have paid $10 for it anyways. ANother sale had xbox,ps2, and gamecube games...nothing steller though. Only Nintendo brand GCN game was Starfox Adventures..rest of the games were pretty mediocre or crap and way overpriced. They were selling a gamecube for $40 by itself and ps2 for $40 by itself. Wanted like $10 a piece on their games. They had one 360 game too...the Lego Indiana Jones/Kung Fu Panda duel pack for $15............give me a break.

The third sale was the motherload. :)

Not too many games but I grabbed the better or cheaper titles they had, and some nice dvd sets on the cheap:

Aqua Teen Hunger Force Volumes 1,2,3 ---------------$5 for all
Sealab 2021 Volumes 1,2 and 4---------------------$5 for all
MXC seasons 1 and 2-------------$1 each
Samurai Champloo Volumes 1 thru 4 $5 for all
Tamagatchi (GB) $.75
Amazing Penguin (GB) $1
Advance Wars (GBA) $2
Advance Wars 2 (GBA) $2
Legend of Zelda (GBA) $3
Work Time Fun (PSP) $3
Astonisha Story (PSP) $5
The 7th Saga (SNES) $2
WeaponLord (SNES) $2

they took $34 for all. :)

This is my first post in this thread, so i hope you all enjoy:

So my town is having a community garage sale. I just found out about it yesterday. So I decided to work from home today so I could go check some of these out early in the morning. So I headed out and found everything you see below. Spent $31 on it all. All the SNES stuff was in a box for $25. I didn't bother negotiating b/c i was in shock.

Check it:
728259E5-C9D2-A9AB-5BCBC5BC6B2F2DC6.jpg

I couldn't believe it. All the games are CIB (except, obviously, the loose ones). The loose one that is hard to see is "King of Dragons" (a capcom game).

The SNES is yellowed on the bottom, but came with 4 controllers (the one shown is the SN Programpad) and the power supply. I haven't tested it yet.

The gameboy games were 25 cents each (Super Mario Bros Deluxe, R Type DX, Pocket Bomberman, and Bust a Move 4); Got the PS1 games and Black Ops for $5 total.

I've failed to post all my finds as I get them, so I'm going to dump all of them here before I forget!

This was the first good sales weekend of the year. This particular sale was outside of town at 9am. She wanted $20 for the NES and games and $2 each for the SNES games. I talked her down to $20 for all. Love finding PTO II!

Found these at a community sale at the fair grounds at about noon. I was actually leaving when I spotted this box sitting under a table at a booth with nothing but clothes. The lady was asking $1 each, I offered $20 for the lot. She accepted $25. I thought I had hit paydirt with Big Nose.... until I realized it was the more common version. Still not bad for 30 games.

Finds for 5-19-12

Still early in the season at this point, so games are plentiful.

Uploaded with ImageShack.us
This find is from a moving sale down the road from my house. Arrived just before 8am and they were still setting up. The PS1 games / memory cards (2) were $.50 each and the Xbox games were $1 each. No haggling needed. All games are complete. I was disappointed there was no FF VII. And yes, that is a Morrowind GOTY.

They also had a ton of CDs for $.50 each of which the Van Halen is the only one I can find now. I also grabbed about 7 Weird Al Yankovich albums disc only.

This next one is my favorite find of the year so far:

Uploaded with ImageShack.us
CIB SNES slim with games $30.
Arrived just before the start of a 9am sale. The system is very minty, all papers and bags are accounted for. It even has the original slim style controller that came with the system. She was a tough cookie to crack; she would not budge on the price. I eventually got her to throw in the games and the ascii turbo controller (she wanted $2 each for them). The ascii controller was rather worn and dirty, leading me to believe the slim was a replacement console.

The games are Super Mario Kart, Aladdin, Super Mario World and ActRaiser.

I live in Oswego. My plan is to go as far as like Earlville or Mendota. There's a flea market in Leland I wanted to look up and a small game store in Sandwich where I've had some luck.

Not looking forward to the heat, but I figure I'll take a cooler of water and some extra sunblock. Not a great plan, but I haven't freestyled in a few months.

Finds 5-20-12

I went out on a Sunday because there was a highway sale that I didn't get to see as much of as I wanted. There were a few deals and a few duds.

Uploaded with ImageShack.us
Found these at a parking lot sale in a small town along the highway. Got Castlevania Chronicles for $1, Dragon Strike $1 and Guitar Hero Decades DS (complete) for $2.

I was very suprised to find Castlevania for $1 on a Sunday at a highway sale!

I think this is the third copy of Dragon Strike to show up on this thread this year. Note the sealed VHS. I think the people bought this game, opened the card deck and lost interest. All plastic parts are still attached but the box has major shelf wear.

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

Found this bundle tagged for $15. I offered $10 and they countered with $12. I should have kept my $12. Maybe I can put it on Craiglist for $20?
