condition stuff seemingly pulled back by amazon, spoilered until I can reorg
Notice 4/14/11: New shenanigans abound! There is now a condition field for all trades - all trades are set to "Good" and may be determined to be worse than that ("Acceptable") or better ("Like New"). During the trade-in confirmation process you may choose whether to have an item in worse condition returned to you or just processed at the lower value. It does appear that this might mean that NORAM will start taking games/consoles without original packaging / manuals / etc which might be beneficial to some.

We'll see how this works out! To be added to the core FAQ after its newness wears off.

GENERAL FAQ (Updated 12/10/09)

Can I post question on this thread?
Only if you can't find the answer from below. And please let me know if it needs to be added to FAQ.

My cover art (PLATINUM HITS) differs from the pic on amazon, will my trade be accepted?
It all depends on the UPC so just turn your game around, type in the upc into the amazon search box. If the game comes up, then it's accepted regardless of cover art. Click on that result to submit your trade.

Since when did Amazon start doing trades?
The program began in 2009 and is handled by a third party merchant, NorAm International.

What kind of shipping does Amazon provide us?
Free UPS ground ---- USPS is no longer available for free. There is now also an option to provide your own shipping.

Do I have to provide my own box or envelope?
Yes.

Do all my games in the same trade-in submission have to be shipped in the same box? (updated 3/9/11)
Not necessarily - people have sent in multiple boxes for the same trade-in submission successfully. It's even possible to send half at one time and the other half at the end of the valid shipping period. However, it's probably best to always ship everything at once.

Can I send in sealed games?
Yes. They won't reject games that still have the original shrink wrap.

Can I add Delivery Confirmation and Insurance to my shipment?
For UPS Ground
It already provides you with tracking information.

I don't trust UPS ground. Can I pay for postage myself? What's the address?
Yes. You're more than welcome to do so. The address is:
NorAm International
22 Hampshire Dr
Hudson, NH 03051

(This is also an option when submitting your trades)

When do I have to send my games once I have submitted my trade order?
You have 1 week (7 days) to send your games. There have been reports of submitting trades up to 15 - 20 days late, but that is definitely ymmv. Send on time for the best chance at success!

Crap, I have one day to go before my shipment deadline, but the website states that my deadline has already passed. How do I print out a shipping label and packing slip?
Load up any existing order (if you don't have any, check your browser's history), and substitute the transaction ID for the trade-in order you need at the end of the URL.

How long does the whole trade-in process usually take?
From the time you send in your games, it may take up to 14 business days for the package to arrive. Most people usually receive their credit (Amazon GiftCard) in 3 to 5 business days, however.

How long does the "processing" status usually take?
Usually with no delay, but the longest reported days so far is 4.

My games were received on Friday (based on Delivery Confirmation), will I have to wait until Monday to receive credit?
People have received credit on a Saturday.

I do not have the manual, cover art, or original case for a game I want to trade in. Will they accept it?
While the details specifically state that original packaging is necessary, people have reported in the past that their trades were accepted despite missing some of these. This is extremely YMMV, however since some were also rejected by missing manual or cover art. On the other hand, older gen games; such as SNES, N64, and GB cartridges, normally get accepted without the original box and manual, but still YMMV.
It's always better if you trade your non-complete game as an additional credit, not part of the minimum requirement to qualify for the promo.

I do not have the manual, accessories, original box, original included game, etc for a console or accessory I want to trade in. Will they accept it? (updated 3/9/11)
The current wisdom is "probably not" - it's pretty YMMV but NorAm seems stricter than they should be on this. Your chances seem to be better for them accepting a console or accessory without the box / manual / etc if it's older generation or rare. You're more than welcome to give it a shot though if you're feeling lucky - just pack it well and include as much as you can!

My game is really beat up, what are the chances they’ll accept it?
This is YMMV. Some people have reported in the past that they sent in games in bad shape that were still accepted. Your best bet is still to trade in games in mint condition. Minor scratches are expected as these are used games.

My game is the Greatest Hits version, but the one pictured on the site isn’t. Can I still trade it in?
Unless the game in question has two separate versions that trade at different values, sending in a greatest hits version is okay.

I have a game from a limited edition bundle, will they accept it?
If the game’s cover art has a UPC barcode, they will most likely accept it. If your game's cover states "Not for Resale" and does not have a UPC barcode, the game will most likely get rejected. Some people have had their games accepted in the past, but this is YMMV.

The UPC barcode is not intact on my game's cover art, will that be accepted? (updated 3/9/11)
This is YMMV, but probably not. The UPC is all powerful within the walls of NorAm.

I sent in my games, all of which were in pristine condition with the original packaging, but they said that one game is damaged and is now being returned.
Always pack your games well. Put a lot of newspaper around your games in the box to secure them and to prevent any damages from haphazard box cutting. People in the past have requested their entire trade-in order if it’s obvious the damage wasn’t their fault, and Amazon ended up accepting the rejected game. This is YMMV as well.

Can I trade in multiple copies of the same game?
Yes. Once you click “Trade in” for a particular game, you may change the quantities. Once you submit, you can no longer change quantities on that trade-in batch.

How many multiple copies of the same game can I trade-in (updated 1/11/11)?
Maximum of 2 copies within 3 months period

I locked in X copies of a game but I now only have Y available to send. Can I just send in Y without being penalized? (updated 3/9/11)
Yes, you can always just send in a portion of your trade-in order and they'll just credit you for whatever they receive. However, the quantities you submitted for will stay locked in that instance (I think) so if you, for example, submitted for 2 copies and only sent 1, you may not be able to trade any more copies of that game for 3 months (see previous question).

Will the Trade-in of the Day TIV stay for 24 hours?
It's been reported that there is a limit (maximum # of copies) that will get the promoted TIV so lock yours.

So if I find a good flip, I can just send 2 copies of that game and not worry about Amazon accusing me of stolen merchandise?
Technically yes, but do keep in mind that other CAGs might want to participate in the current deal, and trading in a large number of the same game will definitely lower the TIV of said game. Let’s be nice to other people.

Wow, these TIVs suck (updated 3/9/11)!
Really? Hrm. While that may be true, they're often better than other comparable places. Your options of what to do with your used games are greater now than they've ever been, so feel free to shop your trades around or just sell them off on glyde/gamestaq/ebay/whatever.

What the fuck? The TIV of a game I just bought for this deal tanked! What do I do?
The TIVs on Amazon fluctuate depending on the number of trades that are submitted, and we really can’t do anything about it. The best course of action for trading in games is to lock in your trade if you already have the games or are absolutely sure that you can obtain them. You can always cancel the trade submission if you end up not finding the games.

LOCK = SUBMIT YOUR TRADE, Don't just put it in the cart.

Can I edit a submitted trade?
Nope - once upon a time you could modify trade in quantities of submitted trades, but that ability has been removed.

Can I use my credit (not the trade-in deal coupon) on items that are not video game-related?
Yes. This is the other perk for trading in games at Amazon since you're not limited to just video games.

Can I use my credit on items sold by third-party merchants on Amazon?
According to the fine print of the Amazon gift card use, some merchants are excluded. Your best bet is to try it on the checkout page of your order.

Strategy guides? I can trade in game/strategy guides? Whaaaaa?
Go to the Textbook Buyback section (http://www.amazon.com/Textbooks-Trad...ode=2205237011). You can either search on the title of a strategy guide you have to see if they'll accept it, or search for guides. The two best search strings to start with are 'prima guides' and 'bradygames'. Might try 'doublejump' if you want to trade in some of those. (Thanks eugaet)

I locked in some hilariously overvalued trade for some weird rare game/accessory/etc that I can pick up for cheap cheap cheap. They didn't accept it. What should I do? (updated 3/9/11)
The truth is that NORAM can reject things for any reason they see fit. While some people have managed to get silly things like a $200 credit for some cheerleading game, it's sooooooo YMMV that often it's not worth the effort. EXPECT REJECTION ON THINGS THAT ARE CLEARLY MISVALUED. That said, as long as you're willing to risk it, go for it!

trade-in promo related faq spoilered for history. promos no longer offered by amazon
---- TRADE-IN PROMO RELATED FAQ ---

When do I receive my coupon code for the current trade-in deal, if any?
The Terms of Service states 10 days after Amazon has accepted your games and added credit to your account, but it usually takes 2 to 3 days.

Can I do two different trade-in submissions that add up to the requirements of the current trade-in deal, if any?
No. In order to qualify for any of the trade-in promos, they have to all be in one trade-in submission. You can't add another game later on to make the minimum. However, you can adjust the quantity of the submitted game to make the minimum.

I submitted my trade-in order online, how do I know if I qualified for the current trade-in deal, if any? Is there a confirmation page or e-mail?
No. They will automatically send you a coupon code once they have accepted your shipment of games and credited your account.

Is the trade-in deal coupon in addition to the credit I will receive for my games?
Yes.

Can I trade in DVDs to take advantage of the current trade-in deal?
You may trade in DVDs to add credit to your Amazon account, but they will not be added to the amount you need to qualify for the deal.

Can I take advantage of the current trade-in (if available) promo more than once?
These deals are “One per household” unless stated otherwise. However, you may use a different Amazon account. The credit for your games will be tied to the specific account used for the trade, but the coupon codes for the deals are not.
*However, some people has confirmed that they get multiple coupon by using 1 Amazon account after doing multiple submission.
NOTE: IF YOU SEND MORE THAN 1 SUBMISSION, THE MULTIPLE COUPONS MIGHT COME IN 1 EMAIL, THE CODE IS SEPARATED BY A COMMA.

If the coupon codes aren’t tied to my account, can I use more than one coupon on my next purchase?
No. Unless stated otherwise in the promo details, these coupons cannot be combined with other offers or promotions.

So if they reject one of my games, am I disqualified from the current trade-in deal, if any?
Unfortunately yes. The best suggestion for trading in games is to trade in $10-$20 more than the minimum for the deal. By doing so, you will still qualify for the promo even if one or two games get rejected.

Can I use the trade-in deal coupon on preorders?
Yes.

What happen to the Coupon code if I cancel the preorder?
The coupon code will stay with your account. It will be applied automatically at check-out as long as the coupon is not expired.

Can I use the trade-in deal coupon when shopping from other merchants on Amazon?
No. ONLY ITEMS SOLD BY AMAZON.COM QUALIFY FOR PURCHASE WITH THE TRADE-IN COUPON. Even Amazon's other sites (Amazon.co.uk, Amazon.jp, etc.) do not participate in these trade-in deals.

Trade-in coupon Usage:
Previous promo coupons and their expiration dates (NO ACTIVE PROMOS CURRENTLY):

1st Promo - $ 50 / $75 Coupon (coupon exp: 8/31) - Game Console Only
2nd Promo - 50 % Coupon (coupon exp: 8/31) - Game and Accessories
3rd Promo - $ 30 Coupon (coupon exp: 12/31) - Game Console, Game and Accessories
4th Promo - $ 30 Coupon (coupon exp: 12/31) - Game Console Only

Wow, NorAm is up to its old tricks again. I just had another box accepted and this time I'm getting two games sent back as "Returned - Damaged Item". I don't know WTF is up with that! :bomb:

I received my "incorrect item" back from NorAm. They slapped an "incorrect UPC" sticker on my complete copy of :ds: Tinkerbell and the Lost Treasure. So strange. Did this happen to anyone else?

At least, I can still trade this into GS for some credit. Therefore, I'm confused, but not mad.

It didn't happen to me with that game (they've accepted 2 from me), but I've mentioned problems with 3 other games in the last two days: one "missing item" on a complete game, and 2 "damaged items" on perfectly intact games. I haven't gotten them back yet to see what the alleged problems are.

Everyone should start posting what games are being rejected and for what reason. Maybe we will end up finding a common theme with certain games.

I've only had one game rejected (so far...knock on wood) and it was a legit reason:

:360:Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare - "Missing Packaging" (no manual)
Everyone should start posting what games are being rejected and for what reason. Maybe we will end up finding a common theme with certain games.
I will once I'm done with my current round of submissions. I don't need them correlating what I post here with my actual trade-ins. Call me paranoid, but that has the potential to not end well ;).

Suffice it to say mine were all console games (not DS like the Tinkerbell one). I haven't seen anyone else post any problems.

Sounds good. I've got an extra tin foil hat if you need to borrow it. ;)

You don't know of a way to sort games by TIV on Amazon, do you? So we could browse the games from highest to lowest TIV.

You could just use the tracker (http://ativ.scurker.com/) - it allows sorting and is all around helpful.

I also had one game with another upc sticker over the games actual upc. When I tried to take it off it started to tear the back cover art so I just left it. I was really expecting Amazon to reject it, but it went through without incident. I'd say the chances of a reject in those cases increase, but it isn't a for sure reject.

Also, I don't know if this has been mentioned before or not, but when I had to change my locked in trade to reduce the number of one of the games I had to trade in (didn't get as lucky as I thought I would at BBV) it did reduce the trade in values to their current lower value on the submission page, but once I confirmed it the previous higher values held on the confirmation/shipping sheet/trade in history. I haven't gotten the credit just yet, but it looks like the original higher values should hold.

My second trade with Amazon/NorAm had an odd occurrence.
I sent in 7 games and got credit for 6 right away. The 7th shows up as "Not Yet Received" and I know it was in the box with the others. Should I be worried? Is this a common practice?

That is not common. You should contact them - it means they missed it in your box and didn't count it. The only time I've gotten "Not Yet Received" while others were processed was when I didn't send all the games in.

Both FFXIII and GoW3 just got accepted. Both were shipped and delivered on the same day in the same shipment, but it took an extra two days for FFXIII to get credited.

I'm just wondering has anyone trade in a game missing a manual and still received full credit?

I can only speak from my experience, but I've traded a lot with Amazon over the last year. I've probably traded a dozen games, possibly more, that didn't have a manual and all were accepted. My JUST CAUSE 2 didn't have a manual and they took it just the other day, for example. I've traded older games without a manual and didn't have a problem either.

I had a FABLE 2 rejected that was in a DVD case, had a rental sticker on the disc, and was missing the manual. They sent that back. After putting the same disc in a 360 replacement case, and taking off the rental sticker, the exact same copy was accepted the following week...even though it still didn't have a manual.

Other than that, I had an old STAR WARS BATTLEFIELD Xbox game with banged up artwork, and they didn't like that -- but that's the only video game out of a few dozen (it's probably more now that I think about it) that they didn't like, spread across multiple trade-in submissions.

I realize people have had issues, but in the dozens of items I've traded, the manual has never been a reason for an item not being accepted -- at least not in my case. FWIW most of the time I was trading a few other items, DVDs, games, etc. in there -- maybe they're more forgiving if you are trading in a batch of multiple titles. I don't know. I've also found they are very forgiving of scratches and the like. My COD4 was scratched up but they still took it. I used to send discs to Secondspin a while back and they were rejected for a scratch here and there. Amazon took every one of them when I got them back.

So as always, YMMV. I just doubt I "got lucky" every single time with an inspector, seeing as I've traded a LOT over the last year, from those promos to even now.

I think my favorite was when I sent in an N64 game last year that I found at a thrift store. It was covered in some glue-like substance and had a name written on it in permanent marker seemingly by a child with no case or manual and had it accepted (thus putting me over the top for the $30 promo).

does anyone know if they are accepting the red faction guerilla from the darksiders promo. It has a slash through the UPC code in the back.

Well, I can only speak from my experience and the many stories related here over the last year.

I've had 1 game without a manual accepted and 1 rejected. Since they actually put a sticker on it that said "missing item - manual" I think that is something they are supposed to look for (given that they have stickers printed up specifically saying that!). Maybe they only choose to enforce it on games that have dropped in value - I dunno.

I also had a Far Cry 2 rejected a few months back because it didn't have the MAP with it. It had the case, cover art, manual, and mint disc but no map which I didn't even realize was part of it (says it nowhere on the case). But then I found another with a map and sent that and it was accepted.

Just in the last week I've had 3 games rejected - one supposedly for a "missing item" though I can't imagine what as it had a manual. The other two were for "damage" and I just realized from my notes that these discs had very small numbers written on the label side with a sharpie - something like "102". handsomepete - hearing that they accepted an N64 cart with stickers and writing makes me pretty upset they'd reject these otherwise perfectly working and complete games just because of a couple of numbers written on the label side.

Meanwhile, Gazelle takes non-manual games with no problem so why risk it with Amazon? If you want Amazon credit anyway, you'll most likely get the Amazon price + a 5% bonus from Gazelle, plus have 3 more weeks to mail them in. It really is a no-brainer.
handsomepete - hearing that they accepted an N64 cart with stickers and writing makes me pretty upset they'd reject these otherwise perfectly working and complete games just because of a couple of numbers written on the label side.
Understandably. I didn't actually expect them to take it (and the 3 or 4 other caseless/manualless N64 games I got that day), but certainly wasn't going to argue.

Yeah, I'm starting to turn the corner here myself. With everyone else stepping up (Gamestop, Gazelle, even Best Buy and TRU somewhat) and without promos Amazon can now be fairly handily beaten in value to the trade-inee. Using Amazon's actual system is terrific, but being backed by NorAm + no more promos = dead end.

Yeah, at this point I'm pretty much just checking Amazon for the trade-in Deal of the Day. Of course no other place matches those and some of them can be quite good (especially if they can be ordered at GS with "guaranteed" cover art and manual).

i got a message saying that kingdom hearts is defective! wtf. how can a ds game be defective?

in another box, i had 3 brb 360. one credited, one returned for missing item, and one missing. geez! all 3 were intact when shipped.

Yep, something fishy is going on up there at NorAm. I'm definitely not sending in a couple of the last trades I submitted - I don't need that hassle.
People should just start sending everything to gazelle. This should force the noram guys to offer a promo once more. Us cags must amount to at least 40% of their trade ins.
I would do this except people have had their Gazelle packages mysteriously disappear between shipment arrival and acceptance & Amazon is better at dealing with issues that come up and their shipping, acceptance, and payment are much faster, and probably shipping back to you too. Although now reading the last two pages it seems like shit is going South at Amazon now. Ugh. Definitely inform Amazon about any issues.

I've done 30+ packages I'd estimate with Gazelle and never had a single problem. I haven't had issues with Amazon either, but I stopped using them in November because Gazelle was a much better option.

I'm supposed to send in a couple boxes of Amazon trade ins by today (May 2nd), but all the UPS stores are closed. Any advice? Should I just take them to the post office today and spend $16.XX on shipping? Should I wait until tomorrow and send them a day late?

I know people have said that they sent stuff late and had it accepted, but I'm not sure if I should risk it. Has anyone sent their stuff in a day late and had it rejected for that reason?

If it makes any difference, I'm sending in 6 Beatles Rockband games for the Wii.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Why are you paying for shipping at a UPS store? Slap the prepaid label on it and just send it today. No big deal. It will go out tomorrow with the rest of the packages they get on the weekend.

I said it costs $16.XX at the post office. All the UPS stores in my area are closed today.

Has anyone ever had an item returned before? During the Blockbuster sale I had wound up with a couple copies of the Tinkerbell DS game when I needed an extra $9.99 game. I picked them up knowing Amazon was giving $10 a piece for them. I swear I checked the UPC as I was trading them in but in my trade along with about $100 worth of other games, those were denied. As status it says "Returned - Incorrect Item". When I read the FAQs it says sending the wrong item they probably won't send them back however the status saying "Returned" makes me believe I will be getting them back. Just curious if anyone can give me any ideas on what to expect. If I don't get them back, it's only about $15 lost, not horrible considering the value I got on my other trades but it would be nice to get them back to invest elsewhere.

I sent in a :ds: Tinkerbell and the Lost Treasure game recently. NorAm returned it using first class USPS with a sticker "wrong UPC" slapped on the game. Since they sent it out really quick after they received the "incorrect item," I was able to trade it into GS and get even more trade credit:)
I said it costs $16.XX at the post office. All the UPS stores in my area are closed today.
I think you can probably get by bringing it in to UPS tomorrow. We've had plenty of people mail things the day after and had it go OK. Of course, you could be the first with a problem ;).

I'm having my first non-0 or 1 day acknowledgement from Amazon/NorAm. They got 2 of my packages on Friday and have not acknowledged receipt yet. That's the first time in along time it has taken more than 1 day max. I'm anxious about it because of the high number of rejections I've had recently. Also, I'm still waiting for 3 things to come back and it has been more than enough time for them to get back here via first-class mail.

Same thing happened to me with the exact same game, though others in this thread have reported successfully sending this game. So, it definitely seems like something is a little fishy with this one game in particular. It is a very quick turnaround though, so just bring it to GS when you get it back.

I've sent in and had 2 Tinkerbell Lost Treasure accepted. However, I had my third (and last) in one of those packages they received on Friday: thus why I am anxious for their acknowledgment! They don't seem to be in any hurry to send back my other games, though, so I'm not hopeful on being able to get it back in time for GS trade-in. If it does come back I'm letting Amazon know about it though. They already gave me the difference in original TiV and what it is now for Rock Band 2 (which dropped from my locked-in $19.75 to $6.50). I'll definitely be asking them for the difference on Tinkerbell if it gets rejected.

OK, to those doubting that manuals are required or think it isn't something they look for, check out the attached picture, which is of a game I just got back today.

See, like I said before, they have stickers printed up indicating "Missing Manual", so it is definitely something they look for. Send stuff without manuals to Gazelle. The thing is, on this one, I was nearly positive I did include a manual, since, well, I know they reject them without it. I would not have sent a game without a manual to Amazon. There's a slight chance I actually forgot it, but there's also the slight chance they just "misplaced" it during check-in.

I just had my latest trade-in accepted (Beatles and Metallica). This was my worst looking batch by far (many surface scratches) so I was a bit nervous, even though they were complete with case and manual. But in the end no problems and my account has been credited in full.

Dropped off a package and after I asked for a receipt they threw my package onto the scale. I was cringing inside. Granted they throw them later, but less throwing the better. Does anyone here use drop off boxes instead of the store? The only thing is you get no receipt. It would be a lot more convenient, but I guess I am in love with the receipt. Maybe I should just ship it my self using USPS and doing single packages, gas costs almost as much. I think somewhere on CAG I read of a way to ship through Paypal without an ebay transaction so you can get delivery confirmation for cheap. Or you could ship USPS thick envelope, if they let you ship games at thick envelope price, without DC for even cheaper. Like $2 flat.

Use this link for Paypal shipping: https://www.paypal.com/us/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_ship-now&info=

Got my 2 "damaged" games back. Other than putting the discs back in backwards (with one loose in the case) there doesn't appear to be anything wrong with them. They are not perfect discs and have some moderate light scratches, but that's nothing that caused rejection in the past. They did, however, both drop by value in half while they were on their way to NorAm. I have requested a credit from Amazon for the difference in the original and current values. We'll see how that goes...

I used drop boxes all the time. I just track them on the amazon website.

Can I send in two separate trade-in transactions in the same package, and just include the two packing slips in the package? Has anyone ever done this before?

Never tried it, but I wouldn't risk it - especially considering that they seem to be having a wicked case of rejectionitis right now.

I've been unloading a ton of DVD TV show boxsets and have had zero problems so far. I've been getting my credit in a weeks time. Usually less.

Did the TIV drop a lot between when you submitted it?

Because while these jackasses have ruined one of my games before, they usually wouldn't return a game because it costs them about $2 to send it back to you.

Of course it dropped. I actually got Amazon to credit me the difference too. But they have always sent games back. Are you saying they refused to return something? I also just got back the 2 they claim were "damaged". I see nothing wrong with them. I also got Amazon to credit me the difference on those. It was a $13 difference on the RB2 and $11 total on the other 2.
