Welcome to the Official CAG Amazon.com Trade-In Thread

Hey trade-in pals! SENDING THINGS IN DISC / CARTRIDGE ONLY / GENERIC CASE NO MANUAL / ANYTHING BUT COMPLETE COULD RESULT IN REJECTION. THERE ARE NO EXCEPTIONS TO THIS. YOU MIGHT GET ACCEPTED, YOU MIGHT NOT. NO ONE KNOWS. THERE ARE NO HARD AND FAST RULES. IF IT IS ACCEPTED, IT WILL ALMOST CERTAINLY ONLY BE CONSIDERED "ACCEPTABLE." RISK YOUR TIME AND EFFORT AT YOUR PERIL!
I'm getting an acceptance rate of about one per day; it makes me think some supervisor is standing around with a glass of absinthe next to a couple of dumptruck loads of games...while the one responsible for the glitch is made to scan each item and recite its TIV with tears in their eyes.
THANKS TO DISILLUSION386 and GI60 FOR POSTING AND MAINTAINING THE PREVIOUS AMAZON TRADE-IN FAQ THREADS

This thread’s primary purpose is to discuss Amazon.com’s video game trade-in program. Conspiracy theories about NORAM smashing games before sending them back / stealing children / sneezing and touching public door handles / etc welcome, but try to avoid going nutso. GENERAL FAQ (Updated 06/07/2011)
Can I post a question on this thread?
  • Only if you can't find the answer from below. And please let me know if it needs to be added to FAQ.
Can I edit this FAQ? (updated 6/7/11)
  • You bet! Up top there is a section for notable TIVs - feel free to add anything in there (and if you can remember, clean up after yourself in a few days when the TIV has undoubtedly dropped). You can edit the FAQ too, please just make sure it's useful and well formatted! Thanks!
Since when did Amazon start doing trades?
  • The program began in 2009 and is handled by a third party merchant, NorAm International.
What kind of shipping does Amazon provide us?
  • Free UPS ground ---- USPS is no longer available for free. There is now also an option to provide your own shipping.
Do I have to provide my own box or envelope?
  • Yes.
Do all my games in the same trade-in submission have to be shipped in the same box? (updated 3/9/11)
  • Not necessarily - people have sent in multiple boxes for the same trade-in submission successfully. It's even possible to send half at one time and the other half at the end of the valid shipping period. However, it's probably best to always ship everything at once.
Can I put separate trades in to a single box? (updated 6/7/11)
  • Sure, and they'll likely be accepted just fine. However, it isn't recommended since you would only have proof that you sent one of the trades (whichever mailing label you used). So it can be pretty risky.
Can I send in sealed games?
  • Yes. They won't reject games that still have the original shrink wrap.
Can I add Delivery Confirmation and Insurance to my shipment?
  • UPS Ground already provides you with tracking information, and I imagine you could get some sort of insurance added at a UPS store or location if you were so inclined.
I don't trust UPS ground. Can I pay for postage myself? What's the address?
  • Yes. You're more than welcome to do so. The address is:
    NorAm International
    22 Hampshire Dr
    Hudson, NH 03051
(This is also an option when submitting your trades)
When do I have to send my games once I have submitted my trade order?
  • You have 1 week (7 days) to send your games. There have been reports of submitting trades up to 15 - 20 days late, but that is definitely ymmv. Send on time for the best chance at success!
Crap, I have one day to go before my shipment deadline, but the website states that my deadline has already passed. How do I print out a shipping label and packing slip?
  • Load up any existing order (if you don't have any, check your browser's history or just submit a new one to use the link), and substitute the transaction ID for the trade-in order you need at the end of the URL.
How long does the whole trade-in process usually take?
  • From the time you send in your games, it may take up to 14 business days for the package to arrive. Most people usually receive their credit (Amazon GiftCard) in 3 to 5 business days, however.
How long does the "processing" status usually take? (Updated 6/8/11)
  • Usually a day or with little delay at all, but the longest reported days so far is 4.
My games were received on Friday (based on Delivery Confirmation), will I have to wait until Monday to receive credit?
  • People have received credit on a Saturday.
I do not have the manual, cover art, or original case for a game I want to trade in. Will they accept it? (updated 6/9/11)
  • While the details specifically state that original packaging is necessary, people have reported in the past that their trades were accepted despite missing some of these. This is extremely YMMV, however since some were also rejected by missing manual or cover art. On the other hand, older gen games; such as SNES, N64, and GB cartridges, normally get accepted without the original box and manual, but still YMMV.

It should be noted that with the new condition requirements (see later in the FAQ), you may be able to send an item in missing some or all of the required items (manual / cover art / case) and still have it accepted in "Acceptable" condition.
I do not have the manual, accessories, original box, original included game, etc for a console or accessory I want to trade in. Will they accept it? (updated 3/9/11)
  • The current wisdom is "probably not" - it's pretty YMMV but NorAm seems stricter than they should be on this. Your chances seem to be better for them accepting a console or accessory without the box / manual / etc if it's older generation or rare. You're more than welcome to give it a shot though if you're feeling lucky - just pack it well and include as much as you can!
My game is really beat up, what are the chances they’ll accept it?
  • This is YMMV. Some people have reported in the past that they sent in games in bad shape that were still accepted. Your best bet is still to trade in games in mint condition. Minor scratches are expected as these are used games.
My game came with DLC codes and I used them. Will my game be accepted? (Updated 12/28/11)
  • It is expected that included DLC codes have already been redeemed, so you should be fine. It is a kindness however if you have no use for it to not redeem it and let the next lucky soul who buys it from awd or wherever have a crack at it. Up to you!
My cover art (PLATINUM HITS) differs from the pic on amazon, will my trade be accepted?
  • It all depends on the UPC so just turn your game around, type in the UPC into the amazon search box. If the game comes up, then it's accepted regardless of cover art. Click on that result to submit your trade.
I have a game from a limited edition bundle, will they accept it?
  • If the game’s cover art has a UPC barcode, they will most likely accept it. If your game's cover states "Not for Resale" and does not have a UPC barcode, the game will most likely get rejected. Some people have had their games accepted in the past, but this is very YMMV.
The UPC barcode is not intact on my game's cover art, will that be accepted? (updated 3/9/11)
  • This is YMMV, but probably not. The UPC is all powerful within the walls of NorAm.
I sent in my games, all of which were in pristine condition with the original packaging, but they said that one game is damaged and is now being returned.
  • Always pack your games well. Put a lot of newspaper around your games in the box to secure them and to prevent any damages from haphazard box cutting. People in the past have requested their entire trade-in order if it’s obvious the damage wasn’t their fault, and Amazon ended up accepting the rejected game. This is YMMV as well.
Can I trade in multiple copies of the same game?
  • Yes. Once you click “Trade in” for a particular game, you may change the quantities. Once you submit, you can no longer change quantities on that trade-in batch.
How many multiple copies of the same game can I trade-in (updated 1/11/11)?
  • Maximum of 2 copies within 3 a month period.
I locked in X copies of a game but I now only have Y available to send. Can I just send in Y without being penalized? (updated 3/9/11)
  • Yes, you can always just send in a portion of your trade-in order and they'll just credit you for whatever they receive. However, the quantities you submitted for will stay locked in that instance (I think) so if you, for example, submitted for 2 copies and only sent 1, you may not be able to trade any more copies of that game for 3 months (see previous question).
Will the Trade-in of the Day TIV stay for 24 hours?
  • It's been reported that there is a limit (maximum # of copies) that will get the promoted TIV so lock yours.
So if I find a good flip, I can just send 2 copies of that game and not worry about Amazon accusing me of stolen merchandise?
  • Technically yes, but do keep in mind that other CAGs might want to participate in the current deal, and trading in a large number of the same game will definitely lower the TIV of said game. Let’s be nice to other people. This is probably moot for most folks now with the per account / address trade-in limit.
Wow, these TIVs suck (updated 3/9/11)!
  • Really? Hrm. While that may be true, they're often better than other comparable places. Your options of what to do with your used games are greater now than they've ever been, so feel free to shop your trades around or just sell them off on glyde/gamestaq/ebay/whatever. Also, not a question.
What the fuck? The TIV of a game I just bought for this deal tanked! What do I do?
  • The TIVs on Amazon fluctuate depending on the number of trades that are submitted, and we really can’t do anything about it. The best course of action for trading in games is to lock in your trade if you already have the games or are absolutely sure that you can obtain them. You can always cancel the trade submission if you end up not finding the games.
LOCK = SUBMIT YOUR TRADE, Don't just put it in the cart.
Can I edit a submitted trade?
  • Nope - once upon a time you could modify trade in quantities of submitted trades, but that ability has been removed.
Can I use my credit on items that are not video game-related?
  • Yes. This is the other perk for trading in games at Amazon since you're not limited to just video games.
Can I use my credit on items sold by third-party merchants on Amazon?
  • According to the fine print of the Amazon gift card use, some merchants are excluded. Your best bet is to try it on the checkout page of your order.
Strategy guides? I can trade in game/strategy guides? Whaaaaa?
  • Go to the Textbook Buyback section (http://www.amazon.com/Textbooks-Trad...ode=2205237011). You can either search on the title of a strategy guide you have to see if they'll accept it, or search for guides. The two best search strings to start with are 'prima guides' and 'bradygames'. Might try 'doublejump' if you want to trade in some of those. (Thanks eugaet)
I locked in some hilariously overvalued trade for some weird rare game/accessory/etc that I can pick up for cheap cheap cheap. They didn't accept it. What should I do? (updated 3/9/11)
  • The truth is that NORAM can reject things for any reason they see fit. While some people have managed to get silly things like a $200 credit for some cheerleading game (or for a PS2 - just ask io!), it's sooooooo YMMV that often it's not worth the effort. EXPECT REJECTION ON THINGS THAT ARE CLEARLY MISVALUED. That said, as long as you're willing to risk it, go for it!
What's all this item condition nonsense? And how can I get screwed over by it? (updated 6/9/11)
  • We're still kinda sussing out the details surrounding the new item condition portion of Amazon Trade-Ins, but it looks like there's a couple things to consider:
    • Good Condition eligibility (games):
    • - The video game, original manufacturer packaging and all original elements are included, but shows wear from normal use
      - Game still plays perfectly
      - Disc may have light scratches and other elements may have minor damage
      - Item may have been personalized (marked or identified)

      [*]Acceptable eligibility (games):

      - Game still plays perfectly
      - Item may have been personalized (marked or identified)
      - Item may be missing or have irreparable damage to one or all of the following: case, manual, artwork, bundled accessories, UPC

[*]Note that a game will almost certainly not be accepted if it meets any of these conditions:

      - Game does not play perfectly
      - Disc is cracked
      - Marked Not for Resale (or is otherwise marked not for sale)
Consoles/accessories have some slightly different criteria, but the idea is the same.
Did it seriously just ask me if I wanted my game / other item returned if they refuse to give me credit for it? (updated 6/9/11)
  • Yes, that just happened.

Unless you're purposefully sending them things you deem to be trash, please remember to choose the option that has them return your item to you during the checkout phase.
Who is AFS? (updated 6/9/11)
  • Not sure yet, but that's the name on the trade-in shipping labels now instead of NORAM. May just be NORAM with a different name. This will be updated as we learn more.
Post away!

^^ I dunno. I sent in my Xbox 360 Elite when the TiV was $230 as "Like New" and they downgraded it to "Good" for $200. I was fine with that, but while I had used it for a year, it otherwise looked pretty new and I included a newer controller and had all the inserts, bags, etc... But others got theirs accepted at exactly the same time as "Like New" so I really have no idea what their criteria is - it may simply depend on who inspects your box.
Lol. Unless you really need the credit, you could lock in the TIV and then wait until the last possible day to send it in. That's what I usually do, just in case the TIV goes up in the meanwhile. Sitting on my copy of Rage right now til the end of the week...
Definitely do this. I ended up with a couple copies of Zelda Ocarina of Time 3DS because of Fred Meyer having a B1G1 sale on 3DS games plus some other coupons (total price on one copy was $13.50 and on the other was $16.50). I couldn't find much to pair them with so I was buying those to get the game I wanted (Star Fox) - and I just felt like I couldn't let that deal go without buying something ;). I wasn't sure what I was going to do with them but then I locked them in at Amazon at $24, and on the very last day they went and ran a trade-in deal of the day for $28. Unfortunately I had sent one already, but the other I was able to cancel and resubmit. So, yeah, it is always a good idea to wait the whole time. If it drops during that time, just send it whenever. But if it stays the same you can hold out for a boost. It happens more often than you'd think - I mean, who would have thought a not so new $40 game that was already trading at a relatively high $24 would go up to $28? (It is down to $20.25 now by the way).

I locked-in a TIV of $30.25 for Portal 2 (360) earlier this month (thanks to the CAGer who posted that) and sent in my pristine copy which I had bought from Amazon for 34.99 in May. Surprise, surprise, it was rejected for being damaged and when I received it in the mail the inner ring was cracked. I complained and got $30 in promotional Amazon credit. Would have preferred the Amazon Gift Card you get for an accepted trade so I could use the value on Warehouse deals, but I do have a still-working copy of Portal 2 and promotional credit, so I made out fine (Will a cracked inner ring damage a 360 drive in any way?). Amazon really needs to get on the case of whoever doesn't know how to remove games properly. I'm definitely not pushing my luck with Amazon again and sticking with Gamestop. I had a bad experience with Best Buy online trade-in recently and the brick and mortar BB's in my area only accept BB purchases with receipts for trade-in. I generally love Amazon's service, but I'm paranoid now. Maybe it was bad karma for getting five penny games during the deal/glitch of the century.

Hah - I didn't get in on that glitch and still had a game rejected a few weeks ago ;).

But, yeah, I think so far all the cracked games are 360/Wii. It doesn't seem like PS3 games crack like that even when removed improperly. It is some combination of the blu-ray plus the PS3 cases. A lof of those Wii/360 cases hold on to the games for dear life. I usually try to loosen them up (by removing the disc and pressing the center tab all around to soften it up) but that won't always help I guess.

It is still a small number of the overall trade-ins. I've had several accepted since my cracked one - though almost all of those were PS3 or 3DS games...
I had a bad experience with Best Buy online trade-in recently
What was your bad experience with Best Buy online? Also, I was at Gamestop earlier and someone was trading in Call of Duty: Black Ops (360) in one of those eco-friendly cases. The employee working there nearly ripped the disc in half when attempting to get it out of the case. She didn't press down and try to remove it, she just tried to straight up rip the disc from the case and it looked like she almost cracked it in half. I can imagine this being the reason why others are getting their games cracked. Oddly enough, I recently bought a game from Warehouse Deals and the center spindle of the disc had tiny cracks (though it still works perfectly.)
What was your bad experience with Best Buy online?
Two games of seven I sent in were "too damaged to refurbish" and weren't accepted. They were asking for 13.99 to ship these games back. I asked for a little more detail on the conditions because I didn't want to pay 13.99 for completely unplayable cracked games. They couldn't provide the information. They ended up adjusting the price to 5.99 which I paid. I didn't get anything in the mail for two weeks. I called them up and apparently they lost or disposed of the games. They decided to refund the shipping payment, give me the trade in values of the two games plus $17 extra (the TIV of one of the games). I guess I made out like a bandit and the CSRs I dealt with were quick and helpful, but I just don't trust the process. Again, I'm paranoid.

I got a copy of everybody dance form coke rewards.
The UPC has a slash threw it. The numbers are still readable.
What are the odds of them taking this?
Looks like YMMV but has anyone had success lately?

I had a couple of sealed items accepted without issue. 1 PS3 game and 1 Xbox 360 game.

Strangely, the only item that was returned to me was the SNES copy of Link to the Past due to "Missing the original packaging". You win some, you lose some.

Also, all three items were from separate trade transactions but sent in the same packaging. Overall a good deal!

Since you aren't paying for postage you should send them separately just in case something happens to them. The only way I could get amazon to reimburse me for a bunch of packages lost at UPS' Chelmsford location was to file claims with UPS. If you send 3 trades in 1 box, there's only a record of one trade.

Ahh, very good point. I hadn't thought of that. To be honest, I was lacking in Amazon boxes to send the items back in. Perhaps I'll stick to bubble mailers in the future when I'm low on supply. Thanks for the suggestion :applause:
Do they require the soundtrack cds or art books the game originally came in with?
for top trade in dollar, yes

Quick question, can't find it in the FAQs.

I have an open trade in I submitted to Amazon last week on the 18th, that says I have to ship it out by the 25th.

I know from past experiences that in a few hours my trade in process will be updated to 'shipping deadline passed'. Does this mean I can't send in my trade ins anymore or that today (the 25th, the 7th day) is the last day to do so?

just open a random new trade in, go to print it and at the end of the url change the TRN number to the expired one and itll let you print a past deadline manifest. As long as it gets there within 22 days of creating the trade-in you should be fine.

They revamped the trade in site, has a BIT more info, for example. instead of just pending, the games I sent it now say "verifying" while the 2 on my list that I did NOT ship say "pending verification" so that means that not only did my package arrive, they opened it and noted what was in it at least.

If it arrived at 2 AM monday morning, hopefully by tonight ill be credited right?

I submitted a trade in and shipped it out (has 2 days before it reaches NH). Then I noticed after that the value went up by $30 more (PS2 Toy Story bundle). I hit cancel on the TIV page. I already contacted Amazon. Has anyone experienced this and what happens next ?

Quick question. I decided to buy a replacement xbox 360 and it came with kinect which i'm trying to trade back to amazon to recoup the losses. However, the kinect that comes bundled is just with an output to the slim's usb/power.. I think I'm missing a power supply and a wireless adapter from the official bundle. Will amazon accept it? Recommendations on getting rid of this thing? (can't use ebay)

they will send it back to you in a week or 2...took me forever to get my stuff back and by then i bet the TIV will go back to normal

I contacted Amazon and they credited me the difference in TIV.

I sent in some games recently, and they've been pending verification for a couple of days, and now it's changed to verifying. Anyone know how long that process takes now?
once they received, I usually get credit within 3 days
It was getting slow a month or two ago; took like 5 days for some of mine in August. I like the updates they've made to the interface, but why does something I sent a month ago and got credit for still say "Verifying"?

I locked in a trade for a Fable Lost Chapters strategy guide yesterday. Can anyone give any info on how price stickers or sticker residue affects condition? The guide is definitely in good condition, but I don't know whether or not to try to remove the stickers/residue.

Well, you are trading it in as a used item, so I don't think a sticker is going to be an issue. But then with Amazon trade-in you never know. Just make sure if you try to remove them you aren't causing more damage (as I have sometimes done with stickered guides).

i traded in yakuza 4, arkham city ps3, and la noire ps3 for $37 each after powering through them.

that's why i don't know whether to buy skyrim or modern warfare 3 ps3 from kmart on release day as part of their $110 for $50 gift card deal. i'm already getting uncharted 3 and need a second game for the sole purpose of trading it in to amazon for a high tiv.

what will have a $35-ish amazon tiv: skyrim ps3 or modern warfare ps3?

mw3 will have a $40 TIV on day 1 and will probably hold steady at $35 for six months. Skyrim is hard to tell since, its been a long time since Oblivion came out and much before online trade ins were the norm.

Just saw today that the standard edition fightstick for SF IV is $50.25 in like new (which mine is). I am actually going to end up making like $10 since I paid $40 for mine. Getting rid of it cuz I have a TE stick anyways. :D

I would recommend selling it on amazon instead, I sold it for 90 and made a pretty penny.... also bought it for 40.00. If anything the price has risen since I sold it.

Battlefield 3 (360) is $40 trade-in currently, might be a good deal for anyone picking up a new shooter tomorrow.

Came here to post this too. For those who got the $20 Amazon credit, this is essentially like a free rental.

However, although I was disappointed in the game right off the bat, its been growing on me and now I'm not sure if I want to trade it in. :whistle2:k And especially with the Karkland pack coming out soon.

I locked in the price, however, and I'll see how MW3 fares in the reviews.

tried to trade in my old 20 GB 360 hard drive, but got rejected due to 'missing original packaging' even though Acceptable condition states that its fine to not have it...really? I guess it's off to gamestop.

Not sure if this belongs in the main Amazon trade-in thread (mods feel free to move) but this is a really good deal and I know a lot of folks are thinking of dumping the game when Modern Warfare 3 comes out.

Amazon is currently offering $40 for the Xbox 360 version (sorry PS3, $33.75 for you). I do not believe it matters if any codes are redeemed. Even better if you did not redeem the online pass and can sell it or trade it with another CAG. Most will probably end up making money if they got the game cheap or with a promo.

wow $40 for BF3 Xbox 360? I hope they don't say wrong item since my case is LE. Also this seems to be the highest base tiv for BF3. It's same at BB with +50% +10% on $25 base. Will check GS later this week to see what I can get.

it's like you said everything I was thinking. I also came to post the tiv.

Very good trade in price, especially if you combine it with another game that has a promo credit. Like getting $50 or $60 for it depending on the credit amount

im doin it. i was underwhelmed by this game, and was really looking forward to it. from what ive experienced SO far, maps are too big and i have to run 5 min. just to get into a battle. its fun, but i thought itd be more fun, will pick up later when an ultimate edition comes out THANKS OP!!!

Thanks OP! I'm doing it too. This game has been very disappointing. I might pick it up again once it's patched and the price start dropping.

Since I got it with Amazon's $20 credit offer, it's like I got a free rental for a few weeks.

Submitted the trade-in and will think about buying it tomorrow either at K-mart or TRU with the buy 2 and get $40 at TRU or get $50 at Kmart. If I don't like it, I won't lose much on it.

I don't really want to trade it in right now, but considering i finished the single player and probably wont be playing a ton of multiplayer after Skyrim comes out I might jump on this. Thanks for posting...
im doin it. i was underwhelmed by this game, and was really looking forward to it. from what ive experienced SO far, maps are too big and i have to run 5 min. just to get into a battle. its fun, but i thought itd be more fun, will pick up later when an ultimate edition comes out THANKS OP!!!
Can't u just spawn on teammates to prevent this? I was seriously considering buying this game but then i realized that we are talking about EA here. Add to this that the single player campaign got horrible reviews and it went from a buy to a wait.

I think thats a good trade in deal. Get it while you still can.

Sent in a bunch of games last week (15 games for $150+), and they are all being verified right now... except for one, which says "Pending Verification". I'm hoping they give me enough credit to order Modern Warfare 3 so I can get it on release...
