FAQ (Updated 12/01/09)
Can I post question on this thread?
Only if you can't find the answer from below. And please let me know if it needs to be added to FAQ.

Since when did Amazon start doing trades?
The program began earlier this year and is handled by a third party merchant, NorAm International.

What kind of shipping does Amazon provide us?
Free UPS ground ---- USPS is no longer available

Do I have to provide my own box or envelope?
Yes.

Do all my games in the same trade-in submission have to be shipped in the same box?
Yes.

Can I send in sealed games?
Yes. They won't reject games that still have the original shrink wrap.

Can I add Delivery Confirmation and Insurance to my shipment?
For UPS Ground
It already provides you with tracking information.

I don't trust UPS ground. Can I pay for postage myself? What's the address?
Yes. You're more than welcome to do so. The address is:
NorAm International
22 Hampshire Dr
Hudson, NH 03051

When do I have to send my games once I have submitted my trade order?
You have 1 week to send your games.

Crap, I have one day to go before my shipment deadline, but the website states that my deadline has already passed. How do I print out a shipping label and packing slip?
Load up any existing order (if you don't have any, check your browser's history), and substitute the transaction ID for the trade-in order you need at the end of the URL.

How long does the whole trade-in process usually take?
From the time you send in your games, it may take up to 14 business days for the package to arrive. Most people usually receive their credit (Amazon GiftCard) in 3 to 5 business days, however.

When do I receive my coupon code for the current trade-in deal, if any?
The Terms of Service states 10 days after Amazon has accepted your games and added credit to your account, but it usually takes 2 to 3 days.

How long does the "processing" status usually take?
Usually with no delay, but the longest reported days so far is 4.

My games were received on Friday (based on Delivery Confirmation), will I have to wait until Monday to receive credit?
People have received credit on a Saturday.

Can I do two different trade-in submissions that add up to the requirements of the current trade-in deal, if any?
No. In order to qualify for any of the trade-in promos, they have to all be in one trade-in submission. You can't add another game later on to make the minimum. However, you can adjust the quantity of the submitted game to make the minimum.

I submitted my trade-in order online, how do I know if I qualified for the current trade-in deal, if any? Is there a confirmation page or e-mail?
No. They will automatically send you a coupon code once they have accepted your shipment of games and credited your account.

Is the trade-in deal coupon in addition to the credit I will receive for my games?
Yes.

Can I trade in DVDs to take advantage of the current trade-in deal?
You may trade in DVDs to add credit to your Amazon account, but they will not be added to the amount you need to qualify for the deal.

Can I take advantage of the current trade-in (if available) promo more than once?
These deals are “One per household” unless stated otherwise. However, you may use a different Amazon account. The credit for your games will be tied to the specific account used for the trade, but the coupon codes for the deals are not.
*However, some people has confirmed that they get multiple coupon by using 1 Amazon account after doing multiple submission.
NOTE: IF YOU SEND MORE THAN 1 SUBMISSION, THE MULTIPLE COUPONS MIGHT COME IN 1 EMAIL, THE CODE IS SEPERATING BY A COMMA.

If the coupon codes aren’t tied to my account, can I use more than one coupon on my next purchase?
No. Unless stated otherwise in the promo details, these coupons cannot be combined with other offers or promotions. IT DOES STACK WITH THE ECA DISCOUNT, HOWEVER.

I do not have the manual, cover art, or original case for a game I want to trade in. Will they accept it?
While the details specifically state that original packaging is necessary, people have reported in the past that their trades were accepted despite missing some of these. This is extremely YMMV, however since some were also rejected by missing manual or cover art. On the other hand, older gen games; such as SNES, N64, and GB cartridges, normally get accepted without the original box and manual, but still YMMV.
It's always better if you trade your non-complete game as an additional credit, not part of the minimum requirement to qualify for the promo.

My game is really beat up, what are the chances they’ll accept it?
This is YMMV. Some people have reported in the past that they sent in games in bad shape that were still accepted. Your best bet is still to trade in games in mint condition. Minor scratches are expected as these are used games.

My game is the Greatest Hits version, but the one pictured on the site isn’t. Can I still trade it in?
Unless the game in question has two separate versions that trade at different values, sending in a greatest hits version is okay.

I have a game from a limited edition bundle, will they accept it?
If the game’s cover art has a UPC barcode, they will most likely accept it. If your game's cover states "Not for Resale" and does not have a UPC barcode, the game will most likely get rejected. Some people have had their games accepted in the past, but this is YMMV.

The UPC barcode is not intact on my game's cover art, will that be accepted?
This is YMMV. Just try it, but make sure to have more than enough for the minimum requirement to qualify for the deal, if available.

So if they reject one of my games, am I disqualified from the current trade-in deal, if any?
Unfortunately yes. The best suggestion for trading in games is to trade in $10-$20 more than the minimum for the deal. By doing so, you will still qualify for the promo even if one or two games get rejected.

I sent in my games, all of which were in pristine condition with the original packaging, but they said that one game is damaged and is now being returned.
Always pack your games well. Put a lot of newspaper around your games in the box to secure them and to prevent any damages from haphazard box cutting. People in the past have requested their entire trade-in order if it’s obvious the damage wasn’t their fault, and Amazon ended up accepting the rejected game. This is YMMV as well.

Can I trade in multiple copies of the same game?
Yes. Once you click “Trade in” for a particular game, you may change the quantities.

How many multiple copies of the same game can I trade-in?
Maximum of 3 copies within 3 months period (This limit MAY also include prior "Cancelled Submissions - YMMV")

Will the Trade-in of the Day TIV stay for 24 hours?
It's been reported that there is a limit (maximum # of copies) that will get the promoted TIV so lock yours.

So if I find a good flip, I can just send 3 copies of that game and not worry about Amazon accusing me of stolen merchandise?
Technically yes, but do keep in mind that other CAGs might want to participate in the current deal, and trading in a large number of the same game will definitely lower the TIV of said game. Let’s be nice to other people.

Wow, these TIVs suck!
While that may be true, you will most likely save more money because of the trade-in deal coupon code.

What the fuck? The TIV of a game I just bought for this deal tanked! What do I do?
The TIVs on Amazon fluctuate depending on the number of trades that are submitted, and we really can’t do anything about it. The best course of action for trading in games is to lock in your trade if you already have the games or are absolutely sure that you can obtain them. You can always cancel the trade submission if you end up not finding the games.

LOCK = SUBMIT YOUR TRADE, Don't just put it in the cart.

So if I can edit a submitted trade, can I add other games that weren’t originally part of the submission?
No. Only quantities can be changed. Changing quantity to 0 means you're removing the game completely from the submission; which you can't add later.

If I change the quantity of a certain game I have already submitted for a trade, will I keep the same TIV?
No, It will change to current TIV for all games in that same submission.

Can I use the trade-in deal coupon on preorders?
Yes.

What happen to the Coupon code if I cancel the preorder?
The coupon code will stay with your account. It will be applied automatically at check-out as long as the coupon is not expired.

Trade-in coupon Usage:
1st Promo - $ 50 / $75 Coupon (Exp: 8/31) - Game Console Only
2nd Promo - 50 % Coupon (Exp: 8/31) - Game and Accessories
3rd Promo - $ 30 Coupon (Exp: 12/31) - Game Console, Game and Accessories
4th Promo - $ 30 Coupon (Exp: 12/31) - Game Console Only

Can I use the trade-in deal coupon when shopping from other merchants on Amazon?
No. ONLY ITEMS SOLD BY AMAZON.COM QUALIFY FOR PURCHASE WITH THE TRADE-IN COUPON. Even Amazon's other sites (Amazon.co.uk, Amazon.jp, etc.) do not participate in these trade-in deals.

Can I use my credit (not the trade-in deal coupon) on items that are not video game-related?

Yes. This is the other perk for trading in games at Amazon since you're not limited to just video games.

Can I use my credit on items sold by third-party merchants on Amazon?
According to the fine print of the Amazon gift card use, some merchants are excluded. Your best bet is to try it on the checkout page of your order.
I got my $22 in credit for them losing a game that was supposed to be returned to me. Saves me the hassle of getting a better copy and sending to them. The wait to get things resolved with Amazon is the worst part, but when they deliver, they come through.

I've had too many canceled orders (for my own preference) so I'm switching to a new account on Amazon with trade-ins. It'll give me a chance to get a few of the titles traded in that I had hit my max limit, and it'll cut the darn load time on my trade-in page. I had ordered so much stuff for flips that my Gold Box was full of games every day, but nothing I could make use of.

Now I did a lot of trading during the $30 promo but you must have way outdone me if you are having loading issues on your trade-in page!

A lot of values I locked in last week with the HWV games actually went UP this week - not by much, but a lot of stuff went up 50 cents to $1. That was nice as I was able to cancel and resubmit which not only got me a little more money but also more time since I wasn't ready to mail these all in by tomorrow anyway.

I can definitely confirm that when you cancel you get those "slots" back right away. I had 2 copies of one game in an order, cancelled it, resubmittied it, cancelled it again, and resubmitted a third time. So under the old method I would have been locked out of trading those two games. It's nice they at least fixed that problem. I mean, in general, 3 copies of one game is plenty and there's usually enough variety even with flips that you can find other stuff to trade instead. The HWV sale was great because there was a lot of stuff that most people didn't want from the sale (stuff that I was still finding on the last day when I had no qualms about buying all I wanted since the sale was ending) that still got $9 or $10 at Amazon.

Oh, I can also confirm that all values change when you update a quantity on one of them. I even had the ones that went up go up (so they don't just drop values when updating).

Miro - I don't think it was a "problem". UPS chose not to pick up any UPS Ground packages last Friday - they made it sort of a half-assed holiday (since they still delivered and picked up 2-day stuff). I dropped off a package on Friday that was also due to be posted by then. When I got my receipt from the UPS store it showed pickup would be on Monday even though I got it there early on Friday. But, man, you must live close to have had it delivered already. I hate UPS for this because it takes 8 business days for delivery from here - so I haven't even bothered to check the tracking yet. I was using the USPS option before because delivery would often happen 4-5 days after mailing as opposed to the guaranteed never to be faster than 8 days (from my location) UPS.
I got it back yesterday so i think about 3 days. First class mail.

It was.... cloudy with a chance of meatballs... i actually played and finished it....

the issue was that it was the special packaging with the $10 free movie snacks so different upc. They're so stupid though. They can't just look at the box? even Toysrustrade in will do that.
Same game they screwed me on

I used to sit on a lot of orders and then cancel them when the values went up. Or sometimes I would put through orders for games I expected to find and didn't. Since June 13th on that account I have had only 100 games traded in, but I have had a total of 357 games submitted. Obviously a lot of that was waste and that's why I just want to start with a fresh account.

$1591.50 for 100 games traded isn't bad though, I've never looked at my Amazon stats. I'm not sure if anyone caught it back in June, but I had 14 copies of Safecracker for the Wii they gave me $308 for. I made $155 off Saints Row 2, $148 off Street Fighter IV and $104 off Endless Ocean. Ahh, the good old days.
TRU is giving 17.50 for it.
GameCrazy was giving 20.83 for it a couple of weeks ago, not sure if it dropped.
I just had the exact same problem!

Last week I sent in Operation Flashpoint:Dragon Rising while it was still going for $32.
Yesterday I check my amazon trade in account and it states "Incorrect Item - returned." I beleive they are just backing out of the trade because the TIV is now down to $19.
I phoned amazon customer service and they said there is nothing they can do and that I will get my "incorrect item" back within 14 days. They did offer to note my account and if in fact I do get the correct item back I should contact them.
This happened to me last week with Ghostbusters 360 "incorrect item" and Resident Evil 5 PS3 "item not for resale". I sent Ghostbsters in for 21.XX. It was at 12.xx when it was returned. It was from Gamestop. I think its a way for them to get out of paying the high TIV when it drops. They seem to use this tactic selectively as a back door exit when the trade is not to their current advantage. They would've probably kept it if the TIV hadn't changed. Ironic that they won't accept games from the largest retail game seller. WTF. Now I really want to research flips and send them a bunch o over valued crap.

Yah it looks like they will not accept gamestop editions they also returned my batman AA gamestop edition.

Mine was also Ghostbusters, so I was happy to get the $22 credit today for the lack of return. Now you're my mentality, rape and pillage, rape and pillage!

LOL ... those F**KERS

Ah, the one I sent in last week just before the deadline was a Ghostbusters, but it wasn't the GS version so they better take it. I had it locked in at $21.25.

The first stage is accepting that they won't take it, you need to come to terms that they won't give you $21.25. The next stage is denial, either in your denying that they won't accept it, or them denying it :D The third stage is revenge, throw pennies at their car, call them and hang up, or trade them a bunch of crap that they will lose money on.

I did this preemptively a few months back ;).

Though, on the other hand, I did send them a few nice copies of Endless Ocean (for $26 TiV) and that has skyrocketed in value - you can get over $50 now on eBay for used copies. So if they still have any left from that summer deal they can make quite a bit off of them. Of course, one of the reasons it went down for a while was precisely because NorAm flooded eBay with cheaper copies. Maybe they've sold all theirs and now it has gone back up as a result.

As for them accepting trades, well, I've had decent enough luck with it so far, but then I haven't traded anything recently and they seem to have gotten stingy based on the posts I'm seeing here.

But, looking through my trade history, I've sent a total of 120 games in and only had one sent back ("Damaged - cracked" - it had the tiniest of tiny hairline cracks right at the center ring that I don't think it had when I sent it in). I probably sent in another 30 games on my wife's account and had one sent back because of a missing manual. Back in September I sent in a couple of Gamestop-version Batman AA and they accepted them no problem so I'm guessing this is as others have suggested - a way to back out if they don't like the deal. Or incompetance of some newer employees or something. I dunno...

I just realized that a lot of casual readers of this thread will think 150 games sent in to Amazon is a staggering amount. Keep in mind most were near even trades from Gamestop since I wanted to transfer as much GS credit as I could to Amazon (where it has been so much more useful). I had quite a bit of GS credit saved up from various trade-in deals over the years and wasn't using it all that often so this was perfect. Of course, I maximized that transfer by doing it at the same time as the various Amazon trade-in promos to make it even sweeter. So while I broke even on some trades (and made money on others) the key was getting the $30 game credit codes and other goodies. Thanks to all that Amazon credit + the short-lived ECA discount I have nearly everything I wanted that came out from Sept through the next 2 years preordered and paid for already at less than half the price (original price - ECA discount - $30 code in most cases). With the demise of ECA I'm damn glad that $30 promo was around to force me to preorder all this stuff in order to use them up!

For the most part, the games used were just random things that Amazon gave a lot for compared to what GS sold them for, in particular a bunch of otherwise crappy Wii games. Some of the big ones were Star Wars Lightsaber Duels, Indiana Jones and the Staff of Kings, and Jillian Michaels Fitness Ultimatum 2009 .

I don't even know what deal you are talking about but generally speaking they keep promo credit on your account and you can continue to use it over multiple transactions.

Was it provided as a gift card type credit, or a promo credit? Of course if it is gift card credit then it stays (like the trade-in credit which is just gift card credit, really).

But even those $30 game promo codes that they gave for trading $60 worth of stuff a few months ago you could split up and use on multiple orders. At first I didn't realize this and when I ordered something like a DS game that after ECA was less than $30, I would pad the order with some cheap crappy game because I thought I'd lose it. But then I realized any unused balance was kept on the account. I'm guessing this $100 credit you got works the same way.

The problem is there's no way to view it unless you make a second order and go to checkout. So once you do spend part of it you can verify that the rest is there by putting something in your cart that costs more than what you should have left and see if it discounts that upon checkout (you can then cancel/empty the cart before finalizing the order).

Amazon really needs a page on the account info to show all the current promo codes you have and when they expire. For example, I have my gift card credit (from trade-ins) which I can view the balance for (and it doesn't expire). But I also have some $5 video promo credit, some random mp3 promo credit, and $15.01 in Amazon PSN credit. But without me keeping track of this myself I have no way of knowing that any of it is there.

its the promotional code from when amazon had the buy a 360 arcade get 100$ promo code
Yeah, I remember hearing something about that. Sigh... too many deals to keep track of. I probably should have jumped on that, though, considering I do still have one Amazon trade-in promo code left to use: $30 off a system. I could have used it on that and gotten the $100 to boot. Problem is I already have a 360 of course - could have put another upstairs I suppose. Oh well... I'll have to keep an eye out for another sale before the end of the year (when that promo code expires).

Just wanted to report my own experience from today since others were having some issues yesterday and the day before. I traded in GTA episodes from liberty city. I've been trading towards an HDTV for about 4 months now. I keep upping the size of the TV though so I keep having to add to my trades. I mention that because I actually elected to 'eat' $8 in Gamestop credit by buying a new (not gamestop 'new', but sealed new) from gamestop for 39.99 and trading it in to Amazon for 31.75. I opened the shrink wrap, checked to make sure that the game and manual/map were in there and then stuck it in the envelope to amazon. The package was received 2 days ago. This morning they credited my account but were returning the GTA as a "damaged item". I called amazon and explained, they originally resisted but I pressured them further. Ultimately the guy told me that his annotation said that the cover art was damaged - I didn't have access to the specific information on my account. Obvioulsy NorAm cut it when opening the package or ripped it in some other way but tried to pawn it off on me. In the end, they agreed to credit my account with a promo credit, but the whole thing was extremely shady!

They just rejected 2 of my games for being cracked?!?! They were not cracked. I took photos of everything before I shipped them. What should I do? Will they return them to me because it sounds like they won't even thought their status says:

Status Returned Damaged-Cracked

because their Trade In Page says:

Trade-ins Not Accepted

If your submission is not accepted, your items may be returned to you at no cost to you and an Amazon.com Gift Card will not be issued. Items that are materially damaged or that do not match the items on the trade-in list are not eligible for return to you, and may be disposed of by the merchant and may not be returned to you. All other items not accepted by the merchant will be returned to you approximately 14 days after receipt. You will receive an email notification and this information will be updated in Your Trade-In-Account.

nah bro you can use it little by little dont have to use it in one lump sum-

i bought new ratchet and clank-n later on bought tekken 6 bundle-n still have like 10 bucks in credit left---

one thing though the code will give you problems if you use it on the lightning deals---as it did with me twice---ex bought ratchet and clank for $30 but they deducted the $60 of my credit---so i had to wirte to amazon and show them that i bough it during lighning deal at $30 not $60--n they refunded my $30 in credit---same thing with tekken--it was $60 but took all my $70 so again i had to write to them n get my $10 back.
I've only read a few of the later pages, but what's up with all these cracked games lol
Seems that more and more people are getting their trade-ins rejected because of NorAm messing up when they open the packages or when they take the game disc out of the case to check. They then try to blame the damage on the sender, and reject the trade-in outright.

I contacted Amazon. The email they sent me for the Trade Ins stated they would be returned and the status says returned. They better return it and credit me. How can I show Amazon the photos I took?

Amazon doesn't allow attachments in emails so I would just upload it to imageshack.us or something and send them the link.

NorAm is getting worse every day.

Shades of ECA, anyone?

Guys, I just wanted to mention something about my situation which is really interesting. As I said in my first post, the game I traded in was GTA Episodes from liberty city. On 12/1/09 when I sent the games in, the trade in value was 31.25. Today, when I received word that it was damaged, the trade in value is only 18.75. So this fits in with the other games that people were trading in where NorAm rejected games that had dropped in Trade In Value. What's worse is that they are not only rejecting the games as damaged (only because the TIV's dropped), but also may actually be trying to keep games without crediting them to our accounts. Obviously this is all speculation, but it does seem that the circumstances with the rejected games are suspiciously similar.

I also wanted to be fair and state that my first "damaged" GTA is being returned but I have a pending GTA that was also locked in at 31.75 that is still pending. It was delivered by UPS yesterday but nothing has been credited yet. If that gets rejected too, I'll have as much evidence as I'll need to form a solid opinion on this.
Seems that more and more people are getting their trade-ins rejected because of NorAm messing up when they open the packages or when they take the game disc out of the case to check. They then try to blame the damage on the sender, and reject the trade-in outright.
Either that, or these shady Nor-Am mother fuckers are intentionally cracking the cases of games they don't want, as an excuse to get out of taking them, perhaps?

Not sure who is paying for what in terms of the return shipping, whether it's Nor-Am or amazon, but considering the ridiculously low trade in values for high value games like Suikoden 2, Megaman X3 Persona 2 ($5!!!) etc. that I've seen on their pages, I would suspect they are trying to cherry pick high value, high markup and profit margin stuff, and send back (or dispose of) the rest.

Straight up...NORAM is SHADY! Everyone needs to let Amazon know what is going on with their business partner and what kind of business practices they employ.

OK looks like they returned my batman AA game. It was not accepted because it was wrong item(most likely because of the gamestop on it) but oddly the trade in value has stayed at $29.

Well my other trade-in just passed so it seems to be working for me. I've only flipped new games though, so I haven't had to deal with removing stickers from GS games.

Hmmm... I posted earlier but it disappeared...

I was editing a trade to remove a game and it turned out it went in my favor because most of the other games (I think 4 of the 6) actually went up in value from a few days ago. A few days ago I had resubmitted the trade because some of them had gone up from the week before when I initially submitted it. So now I have higher values and even more time to ship this set out.

I don't know why but a lot of games went up 50 cents to $1 last week and then again just recently. A few things have gone down, too, of course. I wonder if they are selling a lot of stock because of Christmas shopping and raising values as they run lower?

I don't know if it's just me, but I have not been able to get the Amazon tracker to work for the past two days and this makes for a very sad Miro.

Um, so when did this happen? But apparently Target has a trade-in program now. I've been comparing a few games and for the most part they seem to be a bit less than Amazon's values. But it could be worth checking out. It is through some outfit called "NextWorth" but you get to it right from the Target web page. I apologize if there's a thread for this already but I just stumbled upon this on the Target web page while looking for something else.

Yes good to know. Competition for used games should benefit us CAGs...another column in the speadsheet lol

Oddly, there are no new games accepted for that Target Trade In service.

ie, Dragon Age: Origins, Left 4 Dead 2, Modern Warfare 2, etc.

UPDATE: I had that situation the other day with the GTA Episodes from Liberty City. My faith has been somewhat restored in NorAm. My second package with GTA EfLC was credited this morning. I received the the full credit so I am a lot more confident in NorAm than I was at the end of last week.

Did it actually keep the new values? I've found that even though it displays the updated values when you edit it, when you submit it everything goes back to the values that you originally submitted at (be it higher or lower). If this has changed that'd be good news - there's been a couple situations that if I could've tricked it into adjusting to current values I would've gotten an extra $5-10.

I'm in charge of the tracker, and unfortunately I don't know what has happened. I'm investigating the problem right now and will post back as soon as I know something.

I don't check the tracker myself every day, so if you do encounter any issues in the future please don't hesitate to PM me.

What happened?

Right after others were posting that their trades (that had dropped in value since they were locked in) were being rejected for allegedly being damaged, I had the same thing happen with a different game - GTA Episodes from Liberty City. It went from 31.25 to 18 or so. I bought the game new and put it directly into the amazon pacakge after opening the shrink wrap and inspecting it. Amazon claimed that it was damaged. I contacted amazon who claimed they could do nothing until I got a little more argumentative with them. The rep then told me that his info said that the cover art was damaged/torn - absolutely not. Anyway, it took 20 minutes but they credited me. The interesting thing was that I had a second package that contained the same game so it was going to be very interesting to see if they tried to screw me on that one too. However, this morning I received confirmation that the full amount was credited.

Did you contact Amazon about it through email or phone? They told me to trade my falsely damaged games into them once I get them back... no credit no nothing in their email reply. I will be contacting them again. Also, I mailed 2 boxes to Amazon on the same day, they arrived to Noram on the same day same time. One of them was credited (the false damage one) but the other one is still not yet received. I have the shipping tracking numbers & proof of delivery. I also have photos for the falsely damaged items.

I'm turning in some games soon to Amazon, and some of the games have a few small scratches but otherwise play perfectly. Should I be concerned that they won't be accepted? Should I go to Gamecrazy and use some of my free buffs?

Well, all I know is that I submitted my first trade-in last week, which is yet to be received... but they better not try anything funny with me considering I sent my games in all individually wrapped in giant bubble-wrap.
