I don't have the time for that lol!

I placed a preorder anyway...
You're missing out on some great games if you skip them all and just read a wiki. MGS3 is arguably the greatest game in the entire series and I doubt MGSV can top it.

Games are fairly short too. About 10-15 hours each with just the story modes.

I think it all depends on the added-in eccentricities and if the bosses have good back stories. MGS3 had such a cast of interesting characters who had good if not crazy backstories and motivations. The Beaties/Beasts in 4 didn't have that. You could make the same argument about MGS2's bosses. Any Fatman lovers out there? Yeaaaahhhh.

But in 3, The Boss, Volgen, Adam, Eve and The End just hang in your mind. I think 5 has a chance to top 3 - I'm excited at the prospect, and if 5 is really his last, I'm sure Kojima is gonna turn it up to 11.

I hate when sellers says "NEW" but! with no artwork...and also I asked the MW seller guy, and has no DLC...so its not BRAND NEW, its opened so, in my book that's used
Yeah if you want to buy the Legacy Collection get it new. Used copies won't come with the download codes for MGS1 and the VR Missions.

did you pre order it? .... then I hate you!

Never played MGS but I plan on doing so this summer so I can if I end up loving it don't want to miss out

Otherwise oll just cancel it
You've got a loooooooot of catching up to do, then.

MGS -> MGS2 -> MGS3 -> MGS4 -> MGS: Peace Walker -> MGS V: Ground Zeroes -> MGS V: The Phantom Pain
I've only played the the first Metal Gear (the one with Michael Biehn on the cover). I don't think I got past the dogs. I do own all of them, but I'll just dive into MGSV: GZ and start there.

Now to play the Best Buy waiting game. I lucked out with Zelda Majora's Mask and Destiny there - let's see if it works for this too.

These CE's nowadays are ridiculous. It wasn't until the last year or so that they would sell out so fast. A few years ago they would usually be in stock for preorder until the game came out. Or at least up for a week or two.

Why start with the most recent release, though? It's the quickest to beat, sure, but it *does* have a "V" (5) in the title for a reason...

You're going to be super confused story wise if you jump right into GZ. The game's basically an epilogue to Peace Walker, taking place directly after the events of the game and involving the same cast of characters.

Honestly, I can't recommend playing the games in release order enough. All the games build on their predecessor's gameplay and the plot actually makes sense this way.

Play the PS ones, the NES Metal is weird and not worth it unless you want to see how Kojima somehow got less crazy over the years

I would recommend to play at least MGS 3, Peace Walker, and Ground Zeroes before playing MGS V. I want to say at least MGS too but those three games mentioned earlier should give you a good foundation to understand the story of MGS V since it's all about Big Boss.

Edit: I really do think you should play MGS too if you have the time to spare. There might be a couple of cool surprise in MGS V that you will only understand if 6ou played the first one too.

nice thing about the Halo MCC xbox one edition is that since the game will be a digital voucher, we should see tons of it for cheap on ebay/gamedeal/boxeddeal/etc.  I know a lot of us were a bit salty at the game not selling for $24 during xbone's last digital sale, but I'll be happy to pick it up for $16-20 when this console launches.

Without going into spoilers, he might want to play MGS4, too.

Yeah Peace Walker would be pretty confusing for someone who hasn't played 4. But at that point they might as well just play the entire series in release order.

I hate you all.  Around how many hours would the Legacy Collection take (without the NES games or VR)?  I'm around 20 hours into Sword Art Online and I'm thinking that might take me 80 so I'm not gonna want to play another 80 hour game.  Although, if I can breeze through them on easy...

Maybe 40-50 hours altogether, assuming you don't skip any cutscenes?

About 60. All the game are about 12 hours each if you're not doing the extras. Also, be sure to read the summaries of the MSX games in MGS1, they're pretty important to the plot.

That's actually not bad for 5 games. Hardest for me will be MGS because it is more difficult to play my PS3 than my vita. Also, holy shit this is 3 hours long.

Peace walker was very good. That was the sole reason why I bought a psp in the first place.

So the fact that amazon did not list the LE console has started dimming my hopes that one will be coming to the states now.

Y must u do dis to me, Kojima? Y?

That's nothing lol. The MGS4 movie on Youtube is 9 hours and the final cutscene in MGS4 is an hour long sequence.

Metal gear solid, mantis fight. nuff said...Though I wonder how that works on new consoles...

Do not click this if you haven't played metal gear solid
Does it check your trophies or does it still use save files?

For anyone new to MGS and jumping in on this (as I have seen quite a few mention here) then I say play MGS3, MGS peacewalker, then play MGS ground zeroes first.

This has MGS3 and peacewalker in it http://www.amazon.com/Metal-Gear-Solid-Collection-Playstation-3/dp/B0050SX97I/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1425917464&sr=8-2&keywords=metal+gear+collection

And ground zeroes http://www.amazon.com/Metal-Gear-Solid-Ground-PlayStation-Standard/dp/B00HD4R5YU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1425917533&sr=8-1&keywords=metal+gear+ground+zeroes

Those will get you all up to speed on whats going on in MGS5.

Unless of course you just want to get the legacy collection which has MGS3 and peacewalker, plus a ton of other stuff and means all you have to do is get is ground zeroes. But I still would just stick with 3, PW, and GZ for now and play the others in this collection later.

One of Kojima's faults is he makes his cutscenes very long. He has a huge thing about directing scenes like a movie. The story behind MGS is vast. It would probably take an hour to just read the entire series' plot synopsis on wiki.

The PS3 creates virtual PS1 memory cards, Mantis checks those for save files.

I would not recommend chronological order. The series was meant to be played in release order and all the games build on their predecessor's gameplay. All the games have self references to each other and most importantly, the plot would be fairly confusing for newcomers. For example, Peace Walker outright spoils one of MGS1's biggest twists in it's ending. And the true ending of Peace Walker would be very confusing for someone who hasn't played MGS4.

MGS1 -> MGS2 -> MGS3 -> MGS4 -> PW -> MGSV is the way to go.

Agreed, chronological order doesn't work for these games, maybe if you wanted to replay them.

Tbh a lot of stuff in Peace Walker really pissed me off and I hate how they ended the character arc of a certain major character, and the general story is outright moronic (even compared to the rest of the series). If you like the first Metal Gear Solid, then definitely play the rest. If you feel like it's not your thing, I think Ground Zeroes then The Phantom Pain shouldn't be super difficult to understand, but a lot of stuff won't matter to you if you're not familiar with them.

Phantom Pain CE for PS4 is available again but you have to click more buying options to purchase.
