Official Final Fantasy III DS thread

Sweet, one other person has a friend code listed. Guess not too many Cags picked it up because of the MSRP of $39.99 and didn't find it cheaper like me ($27.00).

Not yet. Waiting on a price drop 'cos I have a TON of other stuff to play at the moment.

[quote name='XMastaCrackaX']I picked up this game just so i wouldnt be bored for thanksgiving *Note: i have never played a FF game before this* And I Have fallen in love with the game. this is only my second RPG *first was oblivion* but i gotta say this has to be a competitor if not victor for Handheld game of the year. At least from an Xbox fanboys perspective.[/QUOTE]

Welcome to the Dark Side. Hehe...

Got a couple questions I hope someone can answer since the manual was no help and there aren't many FAQs yet:

1. How does "Learn" work on magic? Do they eventually become permanent as you gain experience or does it basically function as "equip this spell"? I sense it's the latter but the word "Learn" is misleading.

2. Is there any crossing-over of job skills like in other FF job system games? Like, can I level up a thief and then create a mage with the Steal ability?

Thanks!

1. i played an import (dunno where it says "learn), but basically spells are equipped.

2. no crossing over of job skills. you have you job skills when you switch to a job and lose them when you switch off.

Alright, I'm off the Wii euphoria and back to playing the DS a bit - popped this game in last night and got my ass kicked a few times. The reviews were right ;).

Anyway, I haven't read anything but the last page here and it seems there is some WiFi capability. Don't know what it does, only that it seems to unlock stuff.

This game isn't acting like the others - there's nowhere to enter friends codes! (Hmmm, and, actually, I don't seem to be able to find mine either - just some generic Wifi ID code which was too long to be a friend's code). Or have I just not reached that point in the game yet?? I've only just collected all the characters and was trying to get in the cave to get the Mythril ring - got slaughtered in there by the first group of monsters, so I guess I need to level a bit.

Anyway, assuming I can figure it out I'll add any codes I can find here and post mine ;).

Eventually you will start seeing moogles in towns. Talk to them to get to the wifi mognet stuff. I'll post up my friend code later...

BTW thanks for the answers to my questions!

Yeah, I got to them last night. Here's my code:

3307-9748-8428

I stopped playing last night after getting thoroughly stomped by some dragon (he hits my 100 HP chars for 600-700 each and I can only do 1 damage on him). I tried a bunch of different things, no dice. I like this game ;).

Haha yeah, I tried that too. You didn't take the NPC's advice, did you? Lol! He tells you not to try to fight, just to run your ass off -- surprise, he's not kidding!!

Uh, I figured the NPC was FOS because I had no choice but to fight. Or do you mean I need to select the "flee" option during the fight?? It seemed when I tried that earlier in the game it just didn't work (and most of my chars don't have it as an option). In most games that is never the correct solution, so I guess I didn't even consider it (usually on boss fights it is disabled ). I figured there was just some wierd spell I was missing or something. I'll try it again tonight.

I guess I'm still not clear on the Mognet thing. I thought I'd be able to exchange all the letters I needed with my friend who has the game, but it doesn't seem to be working. The in game characters just aren't responding to my letters. Those jerks.

So anyway, my friend code is 0043 7932 0629. I'll add the people who posted theirs earlier. Let me know if you still need to be sent some mail to unlock stuff. Thanks.

Thanks for the offer. Mines 0129 6974 4699... sending you a "testing" mail to see if this works~

EDIT: do friends have to be online to send? if so that's kinda lame...

Also, can somebody explain their job strategies? I've been reading some guides here and there and it almost seems like they change jobs every scene. For me there's usually like a 5-10 battle adjustment phase, and apart from that my Knight and Black Mage are at pretty high levels and seem to be more effective than lvl 1 jobs. Switching back and forth takes at least 20-30 minutes... while the grind is nice it gets boring sometime.

For me, I usually have 2 melee, 2 casters. 1 knight, 1 black mage, 1 viking/dragoon, and 1 geomancer. I'm only at the 3rd crystal class. Are thieves/monks useful? I keep seeing them get mentioned as a good melee class but my Knight is doing almost twice as much damage (and has Blood Sword, so gets a lot of life back). Viking has incredible armor.

I've been having the need to have a White Mage in the classes, though, so I switched the Viking out to White Mage.

How often do you guys switch jobs?

No, the other person doesn't have to be online for you to send. It's pretty much like e-mail. But every time I try to enter the friend code you listed, it tells me there is an error with it. Are you sure that's it?

As far as job classes go, I just picked one job for each character and stuck with it. By the time I got to the end, my dragoon and my geomancer were both at job level 99 and doing all kinds of damage.

Please add me as well - I tried sending mail last night to the two people who were on this thread earlier and they were still grey on my list (it sucks you don't find this out until after you type up the message!). I'll add yours in now if it wasn't one of the ones I already did.

I was able to flee from the dragon - wow, I had no idea there were more options in the battle menu that you could scroll too!.

Heh. Go a bit north and then west from the Viking Cave's exit. You'll find a dungeon that enables you to avoid the Kraken fight. There's a small boss fight at the end, but nothing impossible.

You all misunderstood me. I've never seen any kraken - I was talking about the dragon that puts you in the nest. I didn't even realize there was a "Run Away" option until last night (it is off the bottom of the visible choices) so I spent a few fights trying to figure out a way to beat him before I came here.

I did see the Nepto dragon (is this the kraken you all talk about?). I got in the boat once for kicks - that bastard would hit my chars for like 9000 damage (vs 400 or so for the other dragon). Pretty funny. Then I walked up to the temple, did the eye thing, etc. I'm into the next area now (though not sure what to do...).

Aaah, yeah, I misunderstood too. And called the monster by the wrong name...

Those hidden menu items really screwed me up too. I can't tell you how many times I would push "up" thinking it would take me to "Item" but hit "Run Away" instead.

I got so used to pushing R+L from Final Fantasy VI to run away that it became habit for this game. Thank goodness it worked.

[quote name='banpeikun']which one is the enterprise again? if it's the one that can go underwater, then go underwater and look for caves :)[/QUOTE]

No, the Enterprise is the one you get from the Vikings after restoring the dragon's eye. I'm in the same, uh, boat so to speak. I went to the new town (where everyone is scared) and to the town of the ancients or whatever it is. Got some new gear and all, but nothing to advance the story. Then I walked all over the place and got sick of the random battles and stopped playing last night. There's some floating thing in the desert that I can't seem to do anything with - is that the next thing to deal with?

Hey guys, just picked up this game over the weekend and I'm wondering if anyone can add me to their friend list so I can unlock everything. My friend code is 3909-2718-6862. Let me know if you add me so I can add you too.

I just started the game yesterday and I did some major grinding in the beginning cave (I usually grind in the beginning of RPGs). I got Luneth to become a Freelancer job lvl 40 dual-wielder that does up to 8 hits per attack and beat down the turtle. 'Course I later got Arc and got beat up by the wights. Now I later did some more exploration in Kazus, found the airship, and got Refia and Ignus. I know I'm supposed to go to the northern cave, but I was wondering if anyone instead tried leveling up to the point where they could actually beat the wights without mythril stuff?

[quote name='coltcannon']I just got the enterprise and have no idea what to do. Help?[/QUOTE]

Did this last night - you have to sail more north. Find a castle, go from there. Don't waste time in the desert area.

I've gotten 2 Wifi messages so far. I need to look back at this thread and see where it is that I get other jobs (not the wifi one). I've been stuck with the same ones since the beginning - though maybe I'm just not far enough along.

After you get through the dwarf caves (after the tower) you get the 2ed set of jobs...
The dwarf cave is through the wirlpool

I am stuck fighting the dude in the lava dwarf cave. Its my 2nd time fighting him in the game, but my 5th to try and beat him. I hate the walk there, I use up all my resources getting there.

What is your party? I used B-Mage W-Mage R-Mage and the fighter class (its either knight or somthing eles...) and I had no problem, use high level blizard spells and it is easy...

Ah, OK, because someone said something about getting jobs when seeing a crystal - and I thought I already did one of them (wind?) and got no new jobs. I am at the dwarf cave right now - beat the Rogue guy in the Dwarf town and am about to enter the lava cave. Sounds like it is hard though - took me a few times to beat him in the town (before he stole the ice crystals). Is he much harder the second time (I assume you fight him again)? I only have one phoenix down left. It sucks when he mini's everyone in the party and then smashes them all .

And right now I have Warrior, Red Mage, White Mage, and Thief. The thief hits for way more damage than anyone else right now. I guess I'm missing out a bit not having a Black Mage and using those higher level spells. Maybe I should convert my warrior to a black mage - as a warrior he has the weakest attack of all but the white mage. I'm using the Viking axe with him as it is the strongest weapon I've found so far. The thief dual-wielding the spark daggers does some massive damage.

After the first crystal you did get some jobs (Mages, warrior...) and IMHO if you level up like any rpg'er should then you should have no problem, just remeber use blizard bassed magic...

Well, I try to level as little as possible as I hate random battling. We'll see how I do tonight I guess. If I get creamed the first time I'll do a bit of levelling.

As for the jobs, I thought I had those all from the beginning - or at least from the first time I tried to change jobs . But there was the initial crystal meeting where all the characters were "chosen". I think from there I got the other jobs. But then more recently didn't I do some wind crystal thing? I didn't get anything after that.

Update - gave it a shot, got creamed a few times. I don't have a Black Mage and my Red Mage can only cast Blizzara twice. I also have 4 Antarctic Winds. Each of those hits for 600-700 apiece. That still ain't enough to kill him. I can steal more Antarctic Winds from the big turtle things or level up a Black Mage... Hmmm...

Okay, I'm at the Temple of Time and I'm having a wonderful time with the game. I only leveled up a few levels at the beginning of the game for collateral; other than that I have not leveled up at all and it's been smooth sailing. I'm about level 28. The one piece of advice I will give is that as soon as you get access to a Geomancer, PUT ONE IN YOUR PARTY. You probably should replace the black mage you most certainly have in your party with it. I did not learn the wonders of geomancy until later on and I regret not using them earlier. Like how the Black Mage does nice damage with its -ara and -aga spells? Imagine doing that damage EVERY TURN at NO MP COST. That's how it works with the Geomancer. Oh baby they are awesome. I think their usefulness will wane when I get the last set of jobs, but they're unbeatable magic users for the middle part of the game. My current party is Knight, Geomancer, White Mage, and Monk, and I am having a relatively easy time.

I agree, the geomancer is awesome. And while the last set of jobs is cool, I kept my geomancer all the way to the end. Geomancers get ridiculously powerful as their job level goes up. I know the damage indicator only shows up to 9999, but I've taken out enemies with 12000 HP with a single Geomancer spell. They're that good.

WAR/MNK/BLM/RDM, I have Bliz lvl 3, and some handy Arctic Winds but he cuts me down before I can really get going. Again its the long treck there that take away most of my built up supplies.

yeah geomancer is pretty sick. i remember in the magma cave i did the dark attack for the first time and got 9999 damage as a level whatever-you-are-at-that-point.

Holy fucking Jesus. I was planning on changing my party to Knight/Summoner/Devout/Ninja or Black Belt after I get the last set of classes, but perhaps I need to rethink this.

[quote name='io']I get an error with your code - sure you got all the digits right?[/QUOTE]

Yeah I tried sending one to like 5-6 people who listed their codes, but they were all grayed. Has anybody gotten a successful FF3 mail out?? It seems batty because you don't connect to DS WiFi unless you're talking to a moogle...

As for jobs... I haven't played much lately but I just met up with Doga and let him go... I actually forgot what they told me to go to (something about Underwater) so I'm probably gonna look on GameFAQs for reference (again... sigh i hate using it).

Do you guys usually have 2 fighters or 3 fighters? Do you always have a healing class? (seeing as how it's kinda useless right now... also it cuts your firepower down to 3/4 what it could be). How often do you switch classes? The guide I was reading always mentioned Thief and Monk and I never really cared much about them... it takes so long to switch classes =(

I've gotten 2 now, and, as far as I know, sent 2 out as well. A 3rd one is pending (RexSteelFist).

I'm pretty much exactly where you are, though a tad further. I recommend a white mage to be in your party; they actually do decent damage if you have them use the mid-level staves as items in battle. I currently have Knight/Geomancer/White Mage/Monk and it works out great. I highly recommend getting at least a Geomancer and a White Mage. For the fighter classes, pick what you like and what has a decent job level. I only change classes if it's practically recommended in the game, such as changing to mages for Mini dungeons or using all Dragoons for that one boss or using a Scholar for that one boss.

[quote name='banpeikun']the problem with geomancer is that it stunts the development of your other classes[/quote]
Really? How so? I noticed that my geomancer was the first to hit job level 99, but that doesn't mean it was at the expense of the other characters jobs, does it?

Edit: Oh wait, I think I might see what you're saying. If the geomancer goes first and kills everything, the the others don't get a chance to ask and improve their job skills. Is that what you mean?

[quote name='banpeikun']the problem with geomancer is that it stunts the development of your other classes[/QUOTE]

Nah, the enemies have enough HP at my point that unless he does a successful one-hit-kill spell that everyone gets a turn or two.

I turned my black mage (Ingus) into a Geomancer not long ago. He is getting much better now and I think I'm going to stick with it. Surprisingly (at least to me), my thief (arc) is my most powerful person. He has had a very high job level and can inflict MASSIVE Damage;) . I look at guides telling me how to take down monsters in the dungeons, but my thief annihilates the monsters with one normal attack. I just gave Arc two powerful daggers and kept his job most of the game. Now he is a beast and usually does 4500-8000ish damage per hit. I just got to level 40.
