Official Final Fantasy III DS thread

I managed to get Onion Knight sooner than I expected... I was able to get it before the elder at Ur sent me the message saying the kids fell in.

Level 14 or so.. from what I read, the job EXP per action goes from 20 to 8 at that point.. looks like It'll be a long time leveling up.

Man, talk about luck... (Hein related)
Today I fought him. At the start of the battle, I was lucky enough to strike him with a Blizzara after his barrier changed his weakness to ice (which he did on the first turn, before my Scholar could Study him). Then it was my Geomancer's turn, and I had him do a Terrain attack. In a rare stroke of luck, the Terrain attack he used was Shadow Flare, which hit Hein for 4050 damage, effectively killing him in one round :). When I thought about it, I found it pretty ironic. Before the battle, Hein bragged that he wielded the power of darkness. His end was brought about bt a random spell that clearly has roots in darkness.

Poor wittle skull-face...

So I changed all my characters to Black Belts hoping to maximize their hp, and 99 job levels later they're SUPER powerful. I'm talking kill a red dragon in 1 round and only 3 characters attacked (2 had crits though). However, I wouldn't suggest using all Black Belts against a boss, since they take a lot of damage. But man those two crits must have been for like 30,000 - 40,000 hp since the dragon has 99,999 hp.

I clearly have too much time on my hands.

Edit: finally reached lvl 99 with everyone, changed to Onion Knight with full Onion equipment and wow. I destroyed that secret boss, I think it's time to take this cartridge out.
I am at the point where you first sail with the enterprise. I encountered a random battle while sailing and my game froze. Has anyone else had similar game freezing problems?
happened to me on metroid prime when my DS card came out. I didn't unclick it but when i turned off the DS and turned it back on it didn't show the game cartridge to be in the slot.

I'm having a bit of a problem with this game. I'm at the Crystal Tower, end of the game, and those two gates, one that goes further into the crystal tower, and one that goes into Eureka, won't open.

I've beaten both of the bosses you need for each gate, supposedly. If those are the Titan at the entrance to the Crystal Tower, and the two at Doga's Shrine or whatever. I did get the cutscene where they put the key together.. I don't know what's going on.

I'm doing what Aberforth was doing, leveling as black belts..

I'm fighting in Bahamut's cave, the exp is good there, the enemies only attack once, and even with two unarmed characters, i can wipe out a party of 3 monsthers for over 5k exp in one round without taking any damage..

It's teh winz.

I'm also stuck at the blacksmith thing, Cid won't send me any more messages. I have been able to get the mastery weapons from the blacksmith, with just the pendant part done, and none of my characters are using swords, so I don't really care much about getting the next step.

Did you already Visit Takka? (the Blacksmith on the floating island) I think that was what my problem was, I visited him then a cutscene popped, then I visited the Legendary blacksmith and a cutscene popped up..then I got the last reply from Cid that there was a monster in his basement.
This might be a dumb question, but did you press A at the gate?
Yeah. Figured out the problem, long story but basically I had beaten one of the required bosses before, but died, and forgot about it, so I went back and did that, then everything worked.

I spent like 2 hours in that last dungeon, got to the final boss, and she slayed my entire party without remorse.

I may never pick the game up again.. We'll see.

You didn't happen to just restart or turn the game off right after getting beaten by the final boss did you?

Final Fantasy III stock question...

I been search every store that sell games. Where is FFIII? Everywhere is sold out and also online store is out of stock. What funny is, some online store doesnt show the game is exist... Isn't it already been release for 2 months already. Shouldnt there be some left over?? I wanna play it so badly because I just brought a DS. Help me out here! Thanks!

well I shut it off. Going through that dungeon again after leveling to be powerful enough to beat the last boss makes me bored just thinking about it. They should have been a little more conscoius of the handheld design and added at least one save point in the last dungeon.

I was just wondering the same thing. Tried to find it today, it's OOS everywhere! this is the first time I haven't been able to find an FF game.

OMG TEH RARE

isn't the last boss suppose to wipe out your party the first time you fight it? i think it's a part of the story

I waited after getting smacked down by the boss the first time I went through the place (as anything that can effectively kill your party in one round made me suspicious), and I could've sworn that the boss still did 9999 damage to my party the second time I confronted it. So after restarting I explored around the last area and found and beat the four optional dark crystal bosses. The last boss somehow turned into a pushover that I easily pwned using dragoons jumping with dual-wielded blood lances.

hey im bout 15+ hrs and im bout to beat it but i want an onion knight so im going to find a moggle so i need 10 ppl in a little

Well, unless you plan to level him for a LONG time, I would recommend not getting the Onion Knight. He has been a huge drag on my party. I finally picked up the game again after taking about 3 weeks off after being killed by the final boss. I got the master weapons for the Devout and Onion Knight (thanks Aberforth!) and then charged through to the end in about 2 hours (from outside the Crystal tower all the way to the final boss). Once again I had no problems whatsoever with any of the fights up till the end. This time I managed to last about 10 turns and hit for between 90,000 and 100,000 damage but her combined Lightning/Particle beam attack and hand smacks did me in on that last turn.

Basically, even though they claim they modified it so you can use any party you want (instead of requiring Ninjas/Sages) I still think you need to be careful. This time I put the Ninja in the back and used Shurikens. And I had a Devout for healing. She is also nearly immune to the Lightning spell and was often the last one standing (twice she hung on when all the others died and was able to bring them back).

The problem is my Black Belt and Onion Knight. The OK is a good healer and that's all I am using him for - put him in the back, did healing like the Devout. The problem is that he gets hammered by every kind of attack and dies very easily. The Black Belt is the same way. He hits for about 5000 damage but I basically had to give up on him and just try to keep the Ninja alive.

I must have been very close with the nearly 100,000 damage I dealt out (I just kept track in my head - it was fairly easy since the Ninja hit for 9,999 every time and the Black Belt for about 5000 the few turns he was alive).

Look at it this way: my chars all have about 3000 HP (some more, the OK a little less). The final boss will hit you with Lightning which takes away 1500 or so. Then the particle beam will take away nearly another 1500. That either wipes out one or two right there, or leaves them with a few hundred HP. Then she'll smack a few more times and knock out one or two more. Then the next round I'm trying to use "Arise" with the Devout and maybe one more attack with the Ninja. The Ninja, of course, gets killed by the next particle beam attack. The Devout might get the arise in before getting hit or killed, but then whoever she resurrects just gets smacked back down pretty quickly.

Invariably, my dual-healing would have the worst of luck. Either one would go first before the party took any damage (and thus the healing was wasted) or they would go at the end when one or two were dead (and the healing was wasted on them, anyway). A few times I was able to get the party back to full health at the end of a round - but it doesn't last long.

What I need to do is switch either the Black Belt or Onion Knight to something else. Probably if I just switch the Black Belt to a Ninja I'll have no prroblem. The Black Belt is highly useless though ;). Just a heads up on that, after having spent so many hours leveling the bastard! I might even want to switch the Onion Knight to a Devout - she was much more durable than all the others (mostly due to near immunity to the one lightning attack). With 2 of them you could keep the others going pretty easily, I think.

I swear Dragoons with dual blood lances does wonders. I had three dragoons and a sage, and the sage was in the back row just to draw away from the boss' attacks if the dragoons landed early and also to wipe out the magic-using tentacle. Each time I used jump, the lances practically healed the character completely. The only other weapon with life-stealing is the blood sword, but it's really weak compared to the blood lance.

Well, yes, the Dragoons would be another option. I was really trying to get it done with the characters what brought me there ;). But I guess I'll have to switch them to other things and the Dragoons are one example. Maybe I'll make the Black Belt a Dragoon. Can the Dragoos jump from the back row or do they need to be front?

This was my last Boss battle

2 Ninjas in the back throwing Shurikens, 1 Knight with Excalibur and Ragnarok and 1 Devout.. Basically the 2 ninjas and the Knight did 9999+ each per attack so that was about 30,000+ per round. My Devout only healed on the 2nd round..I was gonna heal at the 4th round but the big bad meanie went down after my 2 Ninjas turn..Use ribbon with all your characters and the last battle is as easy as cheese, as it negates the tentacles--because all they do is cause negative status to your characters.

Dragoons can jump from the back row, but they do less damage there (who knows why). Leaving the dragoons in the front row shouldn't be much of an issue since they're going to pretty much just keep jumping the entire battle and avoiding most of the attacks. I think blood lances can be found in the ancient ruins (the place where there used to be adamantite boulders blocking the way).

Well, I was using the ribbons. But damn, I must have been close if you did her in in 3 2/3 rounds - that's no more than 110,000 damage (not counting whatever it was your Devout did when not healing) and I was close to 100,000. I could *probably* run through with the same party and with a little luck beat her this time. But it takes too damn long to get there so I'll want to up the odds a bit. I think either the 2 Ninja thing or a Dragoon/Ninja combo should do it. 2 Ninjas is kind of boring, so maybe I'll try the Dragoon - haven't used them much at all. I also already have a few Blood Lances - didn't think they were much use ;). Problem is, doesn't it take 2 turns for a jump? Then they can only do 9,999 max - no better than my Black Belt at 5000 per turn except that a Dragoon will probably last longer.

Aberforth - you have the Dragoon card? If so, could you send that? ;). It will be particularly important as he'll be super low-level when I get there.

In any case, though the WiFi is nice for trading the master weapon abilities, I blame it for screwing me up with respect to the Knight/Onion Knight. If I had kept him as a regular Knight he'd be as powerful as FlipSide's Knight. I have those weapons equipped on my Onion Knight and he does squat with them. I was thinking they were useless, but really it is just the OK.

Actually one of my Ninjas was my Summoner most of the time, he was only job level 10 when I started the boss fight.

The final boss only has 120,000 HPs, so I suggest having at least 8 shurikens, 2 for each round..if done right you shouldn't go past 4 rounds... since I was doing 9,999 damage, specially when my knight crits, I could be doing more than 30,000 per round..my devout casted protect on my Ninjas when she was not healing. They were all L57 btw..

It's a little depressing to hear that people are being forced into a specific class to beat the final boss...

I have a translated english ROM of the game, and was basically stuck with two ninjas and two sages at the end of the game, which really took out a lot of the fun.

If ninjas could still use all swords, I'd still probobly be using them. As it stands, My currenty party of choice is black belt, ninja, sage, and geomancer (which i still haven't hit job level 99 with...)

I'm Slowly leveling my characters up as black belts for the HP in Bahamut's lair -- I'm in the low 40s (I think) and most of my guys have over 3000 hp now. I'm using buildup twice for each character, then attacking, which gives me a job level every 3-4 battles. I aught to be able to use whoever I want to beat the final boss if all of my guys have 6000 hp when I'm done leveling.

I thought the max damage you could do was higher than 9999, it's just that it only displays 9999 as the max.

For leveling up, I just stayed near the top of Eureka as it has healing & reviving springs there as well as the higher end spells/summons up for sale.

If any of you have played FFI for NES, i have no doubt that it was almost the best FF game ever made next to FFVII...As far as FFIII goes, i tend to favor two dragoons, a white mage and a black mage for as far as i got. (looking for the fourth crystal i think...) and what's the deal with the onion knight? do i have to contact remote people through wifi to get one? is it worth it? Is it a weapon or job for the characters? thanks guys...
and what's the deal with the onion knight? do i have to contact remote people through wifi to get one? is it worth it? Is it a weapon or job for the characters? thanks guys...
Read my posts above - NO (unless you take a ton of extra time to level them up to job level 99 that is - BTW, it is a new job class).

Battlechicken - My chars are level 59 or so and 3 of them are just above 3000 HP and 1 is below (my Onion Knight). I have no idea how you got so many HP in the low 40's. If you have 6000 at the end you will have no problems with the final boss.

Squee - I think my fight the other day proved that 9,999 is 9,999 and no more. I hit at least 8 times with my Ninja (9,999 each time) and another 4-5 with my Black Belt (at about 5000 each) and did not kill the final boss.

I'm going to make a run at it right now with my Black Belt changed to a Dragoon I think. I ought to be pretty good at getting through the Crystal Tower now - let's see if I can wrap this up in 1 1/2 hours ;).

OK, finally beat this damn game.

I changed my Black Belt to a Dragoon and in the course of going through the Crystal Tower, etc, he went from job level 2 to 12 or so. However, he turned out to be less useful in the final fight than I thought. It was mostly just luck (different circumstances) that allowed me to win this time, and I could have easily done it with the Black Belt. The Dragoon only hit for 6000 every other turn while the Black belt hit for 5000 every turn. I just got luckier with my healing spells. On a couple of rounds the Devout went first, healing up all the damage from the last round. Then the boss would hit, nearly wiping out one or two (esp. if the partical beam was used), then my Onion Knight would mop up that damage with his Curaja spell. This happened 2 or 3 times so I was fully healed at the end of those rounds. I only had one char die, and that was on the very last round. Last time I was spending all my time resurrecting people and not doing basic healing.

Squee - you may, in fact, be right about the 9,999+ damage, although it makes little sense when you look at my two final fights. Like I said, the Dragoon was always less than 9,999. The Ninja used Shurikens and hit for 9,999 each time. But I only tallied 85,000 damage if those were really just 9,999 each. What doesn't make sense is that I got in more hits (tallying 100,000 to 110,000) last time I tried it and I didn't make it till the end. I thought I still had 1/3 of the battle (expecting 120,000 for the boss) left when all of a sudden it ended. Very wierd...

I did make it all the way through in about 1 1/2 hours. HOWEVER, this was after wasting 1/2 hour or so with a very strange problem. I fired up my DS Lite - the same one I played the whole game on (and several other DS games too). About 4 battles into the Crystal Tower it froze up on me at the start of a battle (the white screen that comes up before the fight). OK, so I had to turn it off. THIS THEN HAPPENED TWO MORE TIMES at various points within the Crystal Tower. VERY ANNOYING. The last time I couldn't even get the game to come back on - the DS said there was no card in the slot!

So I switched it out and used my kids old phat DS, and proceeded to finish the game, no problem. I never had one single freeze on the DS Lite before tonight. I'm going to have to try some other games in there and see if it is flaking out on me, or if it was just some wierd combination of card and DS and the time of day .

It consistently froze at the same place though - only on the white screen at the start of battles. It made me nervous the further and further I got towards the end - I dreaded every random encounter! On the final boss, the screen stayed white for longer than normal and I nearly freaked. But it came up as normal.... Whew...

man this is one hard game. I must be doing somethign wrong cause i keep getting killed one hour into the game. i even printed walkthough out and im going to the right cave

You got to find that ring to lift the curse. you get the airship and cross the lake to get to the cave. As soon as i walk into that cave the monsters hit me for 34 to 40 hp of damage each killing my people in 2 hits

My people only have like 67 hp

Slidecage, just go level up out in the field for a bit - shouldn't take long.

I played Yoshi's Island DS for 3-4 hours on my DS Lite last night and had no problems. Just a wierd fluke with the freeze-ups on FF III I guess.

By the way, I've been playing both of these games concurrently and finished both within a few days of each other. Man, those are two HARD games compared to most DS fare. YI, in particular, is ultra-tough - now I have the first set of secret levels unlocked and I can't get through any of them.

The reason I said that you could do over 9999 damage was because I've had a single character do a critical showing 9999 damage and yet was able to kill monsters that had much more life. Also, there's a guy in one of the towns that shows the max damage you've done in one hit; mine was around 77,000 (probably on a goblin).

Yes its true, its the only explanation that I could bring the final boss down in less than 4 rounds (3 and 2/3 rounds to be exact). If the max damage is really 9,999 then my knight have had to attack in that 4th round.

Hmmm... Well, then I was *really* unlucky the time before last because I hit for 8-9 times with my Ninja at 9,999 and multiple hits from the Black Belt (at less than 9999) and still didn't win. Apparently those 9,999+ hits were for, like, 10,001 or something. Yet I go right back there and all of a sudden my Ninja is doing double damage? Wierd... Oh well, whatever, I'm done ;).

Didn't know about any guy in a town that tells you your max hits... Which town?

Hey if any of you guys are still playing regularly, lets exchange some friend codes so we can be Ownage Knights ;) Granted I'm alittle late into the game, but after trading Mario 64 DS to a co-worker for this, I'm pretty happy with the exchange so far and I'm at Titan atm but leveling up to 43 before I try him again.
