Official Gears of War 2 Discussion Thread

It was a year old PC port that didn't change much. What did they expect? Also, there was no hype, and as well all know, no hype almost always equates to lower scores.
The article is missing 5 achievements which was released today at gearsofwar.com
Crossed Swords – Points 10
Win 10 chainsaw duels (any mode).

A Parting Gift – Points 20
Kill 10 enemies with a grenade while down but not out (any mode).

Pound of Flesh – Points 10
Use a meatshield to save your life 10 times (any mode).

Photojournalist – Points 10
Submit a spectator photo.

Kick 'Em When They're Down – Points 10
Perform all 11 unique executions on a downed enemy.

Hmmm I'm kind of disappointed with those achievements. I know the weapons achievements were kind of annoying in Gears, but I've been working on them lately and only need the Hammer of Dawn achievement now. Everything, except Seriously is doable in Gears 1, for me. Those Gears 2 achievements seem like they'll be easy to get, besides Seriously 2.0.

I'm not sure, but it is EPIC, and they are known to be one of the top dogs in terms of PC gaming, so they probably felt a bit insulted, when tehy really shouldn't have.

This doesn't even factor in their decision to use GFW Live and the shitty shitty coding.

1up said Gears 2 is definitely not coming to PC, meaning that I'll be picking up the 360 version... probably on release day (whenever that is.) Which is good, because I miss those matches we had like a year ago.

same here. I have to say I had the most bonding with CAGs during that time period even though 90% of them never took me seriously... which was entirely valid.

Awww... poor Rero :(

But this is good, because now we can have 10 people in a room. There were too many times with Gears 1 where we'd be full and somebody would be left out in the cold :cold:

yeah, at least now with support for parties we can stick together a bit better.

Lol, well that's coz nobody knew who you were back then. Like you'd be in the room, and everyone'd be like whodat? And then you'd get the boot. :whistle2:#:booty:

well, i never got the boot, just never got in. One time i did, due to linkpwns leaving (fuck how do i still remember that?). hope its different this time!;)

It helps that we know who you are now though (or at least, I do). Because before, you'd join and everyone'd be like "whodat" and I'd be like "I dunno fuck that piece of shit nerdsrope licking twatjew." So.... recognizing you is probably gonna help
So is it pretty much confirmed that there isn't 4 player coops?
Yes. It's 2 player co-op.
...it felt more fluid and you didn't get stuck to the walls as much.
So Cliffy & Co. wasn't joking about those 400 tweaks on the cover system. Did you feel that movement while you are hugged against a wall was more fluid? What do you have to say about the lancer? About the shotgun: if Gears 1 shotgun goes BOOM-1-2-BOOM, how does the shotgun rate of fire compare now? 3-count, 4-count?
Finally hit 1250/1250 on Gears today. Any more news on the linked achievements??
ive been stuck on 1050 for almost a year lol

Anyone know if those two video documentaries that hit the web the last few days are going to be the vids on the DVD on the collector's edition? If not, does anyone know exactly what will be on that extra DVD?
ive been stuck on 1050 for almost a year lol
If it hadn't been for the confirmed/rumored linked achievements I doubt I would have taken the time to get the annex achievements.

Rumors:

Gears 2 will ship with a redemption code that enables players to download five remade maps from the original Gears free of charge. The remade maps - Gridlock, Subway, Canals, Mansion, and Tyro Station - will be available to download off the XBLM day one of release, but ONLY to those who purchase a new copy of the game with the redemption code. We aren't exactly sure why Epic would do this other than to influence those who normally buy used to purchase a sealed copy.

Another GamePro magazine rumor is that all who attend Gears 2 midnight launch events will receive a redemption code to unlock an in-game gold plated Hammerburst. It and the Collector's Edition exclusive gold plated Lancer are also said to be unlockable in-game. Interesting, eh?

http://www.xbox360fanboy.com/2008/09/29/rumor-gears-2-map-dlc-packaged-with-game/

I highly doubt the first one...unless the maps will be made available to everyone else after for a price....the 2nd rumor seems more plausible, but sucks if the Gold Lancer does become available to everyone who didn't order a CE.

How disappointing. Both the Lancer and the Hammerburst are only gold plated. I am holding out for solid gold!

As for the map pack, I could see this being real. There is a lot of competition that week with Resistance 2 also being released. Some people cannot purchase both games and may consider buying one later (buy in the new year, ask for Christmas ... etc.). Epic knows that the best advertising for them is to be able to talk about how they out sold Resistance 2, were the biggest seller of the fall/year, corner stone of the new Xbox ... you get the idea. Go big or go home. Gears of War sold 5.25 million copies, over 900,000 the first week. Gears of War 2 is expected to do similar numbers. What is a free map pack in the scale of things. Tie that in with major television advertising starting next week, and good things will happen.

And don't forget it is just as important to MS that Gears of War 2 outsells Resistance 2. Epic eats the map pack, MS eats the bandwidth to distribute it day one - everybody wins.
Any spoilers in those achievements? I'm afraid to read them.
Doesn't look like it. they're all listed as "Story progression in Chapter X" and then multiplayer stuff.

I don't get the "bundled with game" idea. Why not put them on the disc or on the marketplace?

Just seems weird.

A kick in the nuts to pirates/used game buyers I suppose.
A kick in the nuts to pirates/used game buyers I suppose.
I can understand why they would do that to sway pirates, but used game buyers too? That doesn't sound like the smartest thing to do.

Unfortunately buying used games, to a company, is basically like pirating. Only Gamestop/FYE/Blockbuster really make out from it. Besides, the game will be 55.00 at those places. 5.00 gets you maps and the game sooner if you think of it like that.

Correct.

Developers really dislike the whole used game market. That's why there will be a major press to make most or all games direct download in the next generation.

In my eyes there's no contest between the two games due to Resistance being an FPS. The third-person cover shooter genre is more fresh and works much better on consoles. If you only own a PS3, Resistance 2 is obviously the way to go, but if you own both, Gears wins hands down.

Don't get me wrong, I am buying both, and will take all the goodies the competing platforms offer. These next two months have some great games.

Heads up if people haven't seen the thread in the deals forum, Amazon.com is offering a $10 gift card upon shipping if you preorder the game. They offer release date delivery, but it's a bit pricey ($6 or so).

I bit just because I had a $25 amazon GC so with that and the $10 gift card deal it wasn't too shabby for me.

That is not true. The ability to sell your game at any time supports the initial retail price. Gears can get away with it (because Gears is actually worth more than the average $60 title), but if other games do this I will be more likely to wait to buy used or rent because the secondary market will be cheaper.

There are 4 games I am buying (or have bought) new this fall (Lego Indiana Jones, Midnight Club, The Force Unleashed and Fable II) that I would not buy if I didn't have trade in credit to use and I didn't know for a fact that I could resell them at >50%+ of the purchase price. Unless all four people that I sell my used copies to would buy new (which is 100% guaranteed not to be the case), in the end the publishers in aggreate lose by eliminating the used market.

Trying to reduce used sales is going to result in more dollars going to AAA titles and less dollars going to other titles. Publishers will get the same number of overall dollars and consumers are going to end up with less (or lower quality) titles to choose from because the costs will be allocated to fewer units.

Digital distribution is the only win/win scenario, but that is impossible to achieve currently because storage capacity and transmission speeds are too low. Digital distribution is only win/win if the savings in retail distribution expenses are passed onto consumers. Publishers will only be able to do that when they can afford to stand up to threats of losing retail distribution. Games are at a disadvantage here versus other media because they are tied to consoles. Games won't move to DD until the generation of consoles after digital movie downloads get close to physical movie sales.

BTW this isn't even a kick to the nuts of pirates because they aren't playing online anyway. It is just to target the used market.

While that's true, they still don't get any money of a used sale.

They still get money from the store who bought the game and sold it to you on sale or after a price drop. They still got money from the rental company who bought the game to rent out etc.

The ability to resale (or Goozex) does get me to buy more games for a bit. But eventually it slows it down as now I have a decent amount of goozex points and just buy the few must haves like Gears. Anything else I just wait and get on Goozex a while after release.

So really, publishers get very little out of the used market, certainly not enough to offset the money they lose from people buying used rather than new.

So it looks like all the achievements are pretty easy to get outside of Seriously 2.0?
In the first GOW before the expansion/new maps came out I had no difficulties getting everything outside of Seriously?

Anyways looking forward more and more towards this game. Too bad I have to wait till XMas to grab one (This site put me way over my budget lol).

Also, this is off topic but The Club has No, Seriously
Kill 10,001 people in multiplayer Ranked Matches.

Sure It's been posted before but always gives me a good laugh.

Not directly related to the game, but I preordered a Gears of War 2 Limited Edition Zune today from Amazon. I need a new one anyways and this is the perfect time to do so, especially considering its 120GB and has the Gears logo etched onto the back.
