[SIZE=+1]Three important notes[/SIZE] (please read these before posting questions):

[SIZE=+1]1)[/SIZE] Most of the prices listed below will not be shown on the games at any given Kmart. Chances are if you can find them they will ring up at one of the clearance prices listed. The best way to check it is to bring a UPC sheet with you and use the floor scanners to verify the pricing before you ask the Kmart associate to open the case.

[SIZE=+1]2)[/SIZE] Kmart price drops are generally national in scope. However, each store must process the price drops individually. While the price drops originate from corporate, different stores have wildly different ways of dealing with them. Some will implement them immediately, some weeks later, and some, it seems, never. Also, there are occasional glitches in the pricing where a game that is otherwise on clearance will ring up at full price at certain stores.

OK, on to the prices...

The wonderful thing about Kmart is that they combine dirt-cheap clearance pricing with a general lack of organization. Thus CAGs in the know, hopefully using info from this thread, can find some amazing deals.

First off, here's the UPC database list as created by Slash and updated by MightySlacker: chttp://kmart.slashbunny.com/. Use this to verify pricing in your local Kmart.

The prices are organized alphabetically and by system (thanks again to ShiningSlade for starting it off this way).

Since the exact pricing is so YMMV, and many games ring up at 2 or 3 different clearance prices I will list all of these separated by slashes, with the cheapest first. For example: Psychonauts $3/$14/$24. I am also adding a bit to the color coding - see below:

But just to be clear, I was talking about a return with a valid receipt and within the 90 day timeframe. They still tried their damndest to deny that. To be fair, though, I've done other returns since then at other Kmarts and had no problems. The bad experience only happened once but it was so outrageous that it sticks with me to this day.

Make it free, No magazine. I got an Edge card for 10% off used games and 10% bonus on trade ins and it cost $15! The only reason I got it was because this $15 easily paid for itself with trade ins. Anyway I got a magazine with that and haven't read one yet.

If anyone can find a Star Ocean:360: please PM me as I've gone to 4 different Kmarts and struck out. I can PP or try to pick up one of the other $5 games for a trade

I worked at K-Mart for two summers (actually, I think I'm still on the payroll--listed as being away for college), located in the Indianapolis area. Understand that my K-Mart store was supposedly (according to the managers) the best in our district, one of the cleanest, and the first in the nation to undergo testing for an entirely new store layout.

As far as communication within the store, one thing to realize is that communication between employees is difficult and sometimes impossible. I definitely know and appreciate the complaints of employees passing off responsibility to someone else. Unfortunately, the store-wide intercom is highly ineffective. The speaker in the receiving area can only be heard from certain areas, and not at all if the baler is running. Often times, an employee will page someone but only say who they need once and then hang up, so one isn't sure if he/she was actually paged or not--and there's no way of knowing who just paged. So when a customer wants a game out of the case, the only person with the key (who might be helping someone in furniture, auto, or the housewares, as I was often asked to do) might not hear if he/she is paged. It's a problem that could seemingly (yet probably expensively) be solved with a walkie-talkie system, which would allow direct contact without the need of customers hearing sometimes comically awful mumbling over the intercom.

Employees within K-Mart receive virtually no education to work in electronics. Upon being hired, I was required to watch dozens of DVDs and VHS tapes in a small room by myself. I honestly don't remember if any of them concerned electronics, but I don't believe they did. The only practical training I had was learning how to open the game cases and how to unlock peg locks. Any knowledge I had of electronics and games was due to my own experience. The person who was "in charge" of electronics was a very nice senior woman who couldn't tell the difference between God of War and Pokemon. So when an employee seems ignorant, well they might be, but it's also because they've been asked to work in a department in which they have no formal training to work in.

As for the complaints of employees huddling around and doing nothing well, yes, that's a huge problem. But the problem seems to lie within the hiring process of the company. The turnover rate at my K-Mart is huge; there are new teenagers every week. It seems like they will hire anyone, and it's mostly high school kids. I'm a senior at Indiana University, so working there as a summer job, I was in the minority. The young kids would openly text message friends, yell across aisles, and sometimes even steal things (security at the store is an entirely different topic, and one which I would not dare detail here unless SHC-Gamer wanted to hear it in a PM or something, although it has since improved). At the other end of the spectrum is the "lifers". These are typically elderly women who struggle on the cash register, but cannot work in any other area. It seems there is a startling lack of young and middle-aged men working in the store (we had one, part-time), because I had to do any physical work that was required (including, for several weeks in my first summer, painting the majority of the interior of the store. Not what I expected when I was hired as a part-time worker).

Basically, what I'm trying to get across in this incredibly long rant that hardly anyone will read, is that there are core problems within the store that affect every department, including electronics and gaming. Yes, the game cases are a nightmare for customers and employees alike. Yes, there are a lot of games that never get marked down or scan differently than they are labeled. In my store there were literally marked-down games that were shoved so full on the shelf that they overflowed onto the floor in a corner which could not be seen by customers, and was only noticed by me because I was going through every game looking for deals. Problems such as these can only be fixed if the store as a whole goes through some massive changes. Management is optimistic, and things have changed for the better already, if only minutely; I could tell that even in my short tenure. But it's going to take time, just like SHC-Gamer has said. It is truly admirable that this guy is getting on these boards and trying to fix things one problem at a time. I know some of you wish the thread would just stay on track with deals, but in a company whose right hand seems to be working independently from the left on most days, it's good to know that there are people like SHC that are willing to at least attempt to make things better. I can't tell you how much I appreciate your comments here. If there is one thing in particular I am taking away from this is that we need some type of flexible format to give employees the training for entertainment content. I may know the difference between this version of that or some upcoming release, but the average person/associatewould have no idea. I approached our operations team immediately after reading this and we are looking for a way to make a "Gaming Weekly" for our stores that the employees could reference for news, updates and information on what are the most important things going on for a given week.

I think given the choice of a) actually having someone working there all the time and b) a newsletter informing the store that Mass Effect doesn't come out for PS3, most of us would choose A. (Again, this is assuming CAGs want to improve Kmart at the the expense of the great clearance due to ineptitude.)

As for the membership, Amazon (via the ECA before the fiasco) that you can charge for it as long as you give a 10% discount on all games and accessories.

I think the vast majority of us would join an Amazon Video Game club for $20 a year.
 
He's saying he is going to make a little informative newsletter about the new media releases.

It's not like it would be hard for him to do, any male between 20-40 could that visits this site could probably write one in his sleep. It would be nice for employees to have, especially since most of the people I see working at the gaming areas around where I live are 40 year old ladies.

My local Walmart did away with the locking "glass window" cases entirely, and switched to individual locking plastic cases for each game. Not sure if Kmart could do that, but it's one possibility to consider.

We would definitely need the staffing to pull it off. I am using the keepers for product under $30 starting in late April. If it goes well I would love to expand the price point.

That's great! Although I have limited experience working at K-Mart, it's frustrating to walk into the Wal-Mart across the street and see how organized everything is, knowing that it could be that way in K-Mart as well. Right now, K-Mart seems to be the place where older people gravitate towards because well, it's slower moving in the store. Between the Wal-Mart and a Gamestop that was recently built in my town, K-Mart is the last option for gamers--and even then, some are willing to drive to Best Buy in the next town over. Educating the workers and getting the games out in the open would be a HUGE opportunity to get things going in the right direction.

I agree with this. However, the problem isn't entirely the fault of the employees. In my store (can't speak for every K-Mart), the person covering electronics is also asked to cover automotive, housewares, appliances--essentially one-sixth of the store. It isn't always like this, but during the evening shifts and sometimes on weekdays it is. The problem is that the employee working in electronics is told not to leave electronics, but that's impossible to do when they have to help someone in one of those other sections, or even when they have to stock shelves in them (which happens often). The floor team is just stretched too thin sometimes which, in addition to the game cases, amounts to (understandable) frustration on the part of the consumer. Of course, the ideal situation would be to have both "A" and "B" come to fruition, with an abundance of great clearance deals because the store lets you know about them, not because of ineptitude.

Oh i don't necessarily blame the employees. You have good and bad ones. Unfortunately the bad ones seems to outnumber good about 10 to 1 in my kmart experience. I blame hiring practices and management.

Like I said, I feel like kmart is in a terrible spiral and unless someone throws a bunch of cash and new management at it, it'll go the way of Woolworths.
 
One of the issues I have with the Kmart I went to is that they moved the locking glass cases BEHIND the counter. The cases used to be out in the open. It makes it extremely hard to search without a worker (if one ever shows up in that department) wondering why you're behind the counter or telling you that you can't be there. And, with the organization of games inside the case a mess, it makes it all but impossible to look for anything.
 
I think we've heard enought about:

1) Lack of knowledgeable employees in the gaming section
2) Old ladies (or none at all) manning the electronics department
3) The atrocious glass case

I'm sure SHC-Gamer is tired of hearing it. Let's focus on other suggestions as well that he can add to his list. The rewards program is a great example.

Until I can go into a Kmart and pick up (for example) Infinite Space, Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey, and Sakura Wars (which were my three most recent "new release" purchases from Amazon), they simply don't have the kind of stock that would make me willing to even consider paying for a membership, no matter how good the discount on the stock that they do have.

To be fair, I wouldn't pay for a membership at Target or Wal-Mart either, so its not like I'm singling out Kmart in this.

I loved that Dual Shock 3 sale, however, supply was very short. I drove to a few K-Marts only to be told that there were no more. Had to go to Best Buy to price match for a controller. I hope this is not the case with the sale you mentioned about Resonance of Fate. Great sale, but the sale is moot if you can't meet the demands of the sale. If that happens, you'll just lose out to another competitor who can match the price/deal. I'll try again for the RoF sale, but I am not holding my breath. I give K-Mart props for trying though.

No, I don't think you are pressing the console issue to much.

I'd say you should bring in more PC games, but I doubt many people would buy them at Kmart.

The current offering of WoW+Exp Packs and STO probably isn't selling that well anyways, so I wouldn't reccomend bringing in more PC games.

The buy 2 get 1s would be great for me also, but I was only interested in MW2 out of the 4 listed.(I never played ME1, and won't pick up ACII til it hits the ~$10 point)
 
SHC, I think you answered your own question. You pointed out that sales are up tremendously. You're doing something right. Most of those offers are excellent. For example with Just Cause 2, I'd rather have $15 off than a $15 gift card because the savings are instant. I also think that as time passes, if you consistently have great promotions like the ones you listed, you'll consistently get more attention.

God damn, I just got back from a super k-mart in Englewood, CO and that place is just a dump. The game section looked like somebody pulled a bulldozer in and pushed all the games into the isle and on top of that, I don't think anyone was even working in that half of the entire store. I couldn't find any games in the so called clearance, it was just a bunch of greatest hits $19.99. Was a very disappointing visit.

Ditto. I'd much rather have a instant savings than get a gift card.

I'd rather pay less now than spend MSRP now and get $15 of free stuff later.

True that, I just want to make sure I am hitting the right chords with you all and build on whatever momentum we might be having to start the year.

I've gotten 4 major projects from this forum:

1) Improve instore experience through better organization and accessibility
2) Improve associate recognition and training through consistent communication
3) Improve pricing methods in store and offer generation
4) Improve promotional inventory forecasting

That should keep me busy, for say.....well, I don't want to think about it for the moment.

Here's the tricky part with that, a little insider knowledge. Have you guys ever hear of MAP. It's called Minimum Advertised Price. Publishers have it on almost all new releases (mostly for the first 30 days). If you break the this price, you lose funding and even jeopardize allocations. That's why most people go the gift card route.

I wasn't about to spend the next 2 hours or so trying to peak my way through the 100's and 100's of games stacked side by side in no meaningful order. Maybe they do have some deals deep in that trap of a game case, but I'll have to pass.

I have one Kmart close to my house that is pretty up to date on clearances(only problem is I can never get a release date game). It's nice because its so convenient, but like i said they never have the new games week of release.

Personally, I like sales where it's buy 2 get 1, buy 3 get $60 gift card, or even buy 3 get 1 when games are priced well.

Removing the "limited titles" restriction on the buy x get 1 free offers would be nice -- most of the time it seems like the titles I'm more interested in are never the ones that get promoted.

As a comparison, around here, Meijer runs buy 1 get 1 50% off and occasionally 50% off $19.99 and under and you can usually tell the week after, since their shelves are notably cleared out (so it definitely seems to work for them).

Still waiting for my Heavy Rain to go on sale.

But as a Kmart employee in electronics, this year has been much better in terms of sales, just a shame not a lot of people bought stuff.

And another thing, don't put PS3s in the ad when you can't supply the stores with them, we literally got one PS3 in the last time it was featured and I had plenty of pissed off people that Sunday when I had to tell them all we had was one.
 
shc. i have three questions
1. how many kmarts are there
2. why is mlb 2k9 for 360 and ps3 still 29.99 at 4 different stores i went too
3. are clearence games controlled by corperate or stores by themselfs
 
I didn't know about the MAP issue, so thanks for that little tidbit.

Straight money off new releases is awesome, but gift cards work too, as long as there are good sales to come back and use them on. That's one reason why Amazon does so well (in my opinion) is that they get shoppers to continually make purchases due to consistently having great offers.

I'm not trying to say that you have to always have a big sale or insane deal to get people in the door (you'd lose money over time going that route), but have just enough incentive out there to get customers to start thinking "hey, it's a good thing every time I walk through those doors" instead of "why would I waste gas and time doing that?"

Fake edit: But if you still want to have insane deals every week (like the dualshock 3 one), you won't get any complaints here :D (minus inventory issues)
 
This off-topic stuff is probably good, but not for this forum. It's actually getting somewhat annoying. I wish a mod would step in and move some of this discussion elsewhere. I come here to see what is on clearance at Kmart, not for all this other ancillary stuff.

If I can pitch in, the add-on deals are decent, but added focus on more timely price point moves for games as the SKU ages is necessary. One consistent thing I'm hearing (and experiencing) is that a huge amount of games clutter the glass cases. This is likely due to price points that are consistently higher than competitor prices as the games age.

From what I've seen, virtually no one is picking up games aged past 6 months because they sit at a $59.99 price point until they see deep discounts. When they do drop, it's like a rock; reducing your ROI to a pittance. There's simply no gain to be had from a practice of discounting one game to $10 and then waiting for another to sell at $60 versus moving both games at $35 earlier. But that's what appears to be happening. Now, it's only a marginal loss if BOTH the $60 and $10 games sell. But if the $60 game sits there, it's likely going to age to the lower price point eventually as demand drops. That represents a huge hit. It sounds like you've seen solid gains at the higher price points, but I think you maybe losing some money in the middle because there really isn't one.

My suggestion is that quicker response to market price points as said market adjusts downward for aging games will do nothing but add on marginal revenue due to the influx of capital earlier rather than later and it'll likely generate revenue that's currently projected, but not actualized. That practice is also likely to produce the add-on benefit of greater accessibility and organization by default as aging games no longer clutter the inventory.

Three birds, one stone.
