Official MLB 08: The Show Thread - IGN: 8.7, GS: 8.5, 1up: B- - Out Now!

I was in the 2k8 league last yr too, the big issue was that too many people were in it. Its impossible to run a 20+ team league.
This is starting to get extremely frustrating. The game 75% of the time won't go past the "Press Start" screen and when it does, it will try to retrieve the contract but will lose the connection to "Sportsconnect" and will be frozen at that screen. I've tried restarting the game and the system well over a dozen times but it keeps giving me the same bullshit.

Of all the copies out there I had to get the defective one... ugh.
I'm having the same problem. I have yet to be able to get past the Press Start screen since I've gotten the game last night. I'm going to exchange mine tonight.

Is there any solution to this, something wrong in my settings? Or is it just a defective disk?

This only happened to me once and that was last night when the server was down. All I did was quit the game and started it up again from the dashboard and I was good to go.

So apparently the game has issues with certain routers, Belkin, which is what I have, being one of them. So if you're having problems getting past the initial start screen, try disabling your internet on the XMB and starting up and it should work. It really sucks though.

So that being said, unless they come up with a fix for this, doesn't look like I'll be able to join the league. :(

idk if this is off topic but anyone else strike outway too much? im having a hard time decideing if somethings a ball or not so i swing at every pitch, yeah i know i suck any tips?

Anyone know how to change the team your profile is tied to? And is there a purpose to the first-person at-bat view that I haven't come across yet?
idk if this is off topic but anyone else strike outway too much? im having a hard time decideing if somethings a ball or not so i swing at every pitch, yeah i know i suck any tips?
Yeah, it quickly reminded me why I stopped buying baseball games. My second game went a lot better though. Got some hits and took some pitches.
And is there a purpose to the first-person at-bat view that I haven't come across yet?
I'm guessing the first-person view is there so you can see how the defense is set up and know where to try to hit the ball.

I'm very back and forth on how good I am as well. I think I swing too much tho. And I think my imported dual shock is suffering from the mashing of X so hard. Why is it that I push these buttons so hard in baseball games? I don't think it's pressure sensitive or anything. Heh.
friskytanuki, can we either merge this into or create a new signup thread for league play? Id be willing to help with anything league related if you wanted... What is the estimated start date for this? Potentially spring breakish?

I was in the MLB 2k7 league on 360 last year but that was just a debacle and am hopnig this is a stronger lived league.
If you want to organize a thread for the league, feel free to do it. Otherwise, I'll do it in the morning when I get the chance. I'm hoping to get this started by maybe the middle-ish of next week or so.

For his problem, it was just that the devs took down the online to fix issues brought on by larger than expected online users. It tries to sign you into SportsConnect when you start up, so you have access to online features even when you're in single-player.

Sucks that you found out the issue and it wasn't that.
Anyone know how to change the team your profile is tied to?

Have you started a franchise or Road to the Show? I'm not sure why it's only in there, but just go to profile and you can change association in there.

Use the guess pitch feature and use it well.
Just guess fastball and location and you'll get a good amount of wood on the ball to strike out rarely. If the box glows red, you've got the right pitch, but not the location. If you see a section of the box glow red, you've got the location correct, but not the pitch. If you get them both, you'll have a great idea of where to go.

If it's not that, then just be patient and make good use of the check swing when you're not sure about a pitch.

add me to the list. My username is Pillsbury1018 would like to be brewers once the ball gets rollin... ready to play now, lol

was playing a game last night, then in the 8th inning the CPU put in a PH but there was no one at the plate and i couldnt pitch.

has this occured to anyone else?

also, anyone have any batting tips?
my hitting is shitty. like unclean port-o-john shitty.

This is the best next-gen sports title I have ever played. NHL 08 had some great mechanics and Tiger Woods has always held my attention, but the gameplay mechanics, options and game modes put this far and above anything I've played. And I'm not even a baseball fan.

The RttS mode is so freakin' addictive. I never thought playing the outfield could be so much fun. I played that mode for two hours straight last night. The only thing that cut it short was that the system restarted unceremoniously. Anyone have that occur before?

Thankfully, everything saved so I didn't lose any progress. My batting is getting better, too, but I have a tendency to either strike out at 3 straight pitches or have 10+pitch at bats.

I'd love to hear some hitting tips as well. I started running through the franchise and I won the opener 9-3 but then lost the next two games to the Rockies by huge deficits like 10-2 and stuff. It was horrible. I can't hit for crap.

But then last night against the Nationals I couldn't hit but I held the score at 0-0 all the way until the 7th. I guess the computer got tired of it because the other team hit one to the wall and they scored like 3 runs because I my outfielder wouldn't pick up the ball. He kept running through it. Suck. I ended up losing that one 7-2. All seven runs were scored on me in that inning. It kind of pissed me off and broke my concentration, I guess. It was all over after that!

And is anyone else noticing how intense this game is? I get so tense and tighten up so much while playing. It's crazy. Watching everything to intently. Now I know why I never last the entire season in franchise. Heh.

My biggest problem, I think, is with the timing. It seems I'm always to late or too early. You REALLY have to think about the pitches coming to you and how you approach swinging at them. If it's a fastball you need to swing a lot earlier. If it's a curve then of course you'll have to watch out and wait for the break. I often will just guess fastball and if it doesn't register when he pitches I know it's something else. Usually one of his other top pitches. I also pay close attention to which pitches have the most juice in their meter. If he's really filled up on the fastball he'll generally use it more, etc. Just some things I've learned via trial and error. Still I leave dudes stranded all the time. I'm not sure how to get better other then to practice. I outhit the last team I played by like 3 or 4 hits but I couldn't make things happen with men on bases.

Has this been hard to find for anyone else? I've been to 2 Wal-Mart's, Target, BB, CC, American (regional appliance/furniture/electronics stores), Gamestop, and Gamecrazy and they've all been sold out or copies only for pre-orders. You would think the last city you would short on copies would be St. Louis. Lots of copies of 2K8 (especially on 360) and The Show for PS2 available though.

My local independent store, which never gets games on release day, is supposed to get it in on either Friday or Monday, so I may not have it for awhile.

The Fairview Heights Bestbuy has it available for in-store pick up if you feel like driving there.

I have a question about RTTS... do you get to play Major League season games in between playing your character in the minors? thanks in advance...

A few asked about some hitting tips. I'm far from good at this game, especially at bat, but I'm currently hitting .400 in the AAs. It was a huge improvement from my sub .200 efforts in Spring Training. Yes, the competition level has some to do with it, but at least I'm hitting it into play.

Some of these have been stated already, but I'll just post here again:

1) Definitely use the Guess Pitch system for every pitch. I typically guess the pitcher's main pitch (X). If the box turns red before he winds up, then you know it's that pitch so you're a step ahead. This is probably the biggest tip as very few pitchers, especially in the minors have lots of good pitches. If you can pick a certain pitch out (or by deduction, guess it's not that pitch), then you have a better idea.

2) Second to just blindly guessing the (X) pitch, take a look at the pitcher's pitch effectiveness (bars under each pitch). That's another way of narrowing down which pitch he'll throw. The lower the bar, the less likely he'll throw it, or the less likely it'll be a strike.

3) If you guess a fastball, be ready to get on the Hit button (assuming it's in the strike zone). A good deal of my early strikeouts were due to late swings.

4) This is gonna take some time, but be patient. Take a pitch or two. A tough tip, since I find myself occasionally chasing a bad pitch.

5) Find a spot you're comfortable with. I usually cover the bottom left corner of my zone since I feel more comfortable sweeping my thumb up or to the right in case the pitch is high or to the right. (I hope that makes sense.)

OK my 9th attempt at getting the game was denied as my local independent store had it's copies backordered, and I started looking around and my 10th attempt at the Gamestop in the West County Mall was successful so I finally have the game! I'll be online with it this weekend.

No, you only play when your player's involved. So you won't play any ML games until you get called up.

Few questions:

Is the save feature in the middle of a game only available in certain modes? I played an exhibition with some AAA clubs. I saw the tip that showed a screen that said "SAVE and QUIT", but I didn't see it in the Pause Menu. I only saw "QUIT" and when I hit that, there was only the option to "RESTART" or "QUIT". Does it just automatically save then if I hit quit?

Are the face buttons pressure sensitive for throws and hits?

Playing RttS mode, is there a way to get a better view of the third base coach when I'm rounding second base? The view hasn't shifted back quickly enough for me to know whether to continue to third or hold up at second.

I've heard MLB08 The Show isn't a system seller, but the 40gb was soldout earlier on Amazon.
And I just picked up a 40gb for this game alone. I suppose the blu-ray ain't bad either, though. I guess we can all thank MLB2K8 for putting out a terrible game and helping ps3 sell atleast some consoles.

To answer your save question, it is only available in the season/franchise modes (not exhibition or quickplay).

Maybe the The Show 08 itself isn't a system seller, but I think The Show "series" is (as long as 2k sports holds the 3rd party license). I bought a ps3 last year for it, have enjoyed the last 2 titles, and am looking forward towards the next 10 (or however long the ps3's lifespan will be).

This game's making me consider picking up NBA 08, too. If the create-a-player mode in that is half as good as The Show, then I'm all set for my sports gaming needs for a long while.

Hmm.. with the possible online league, can we do a draft or something, or are we just gonna stick to the actual teams? BTW I'm on the west coast, so it's gonna be tough for me to get some games in.

Only for batting in terms of checking/swinging, though you're not likely to check with a power swing, so it probably only works with the contact swing. Do you mean pitching or throwing with the fielders?

I don't think so. You've just got to make a judgement call based on where you see the ball is hit.

There's no drafting, as you just play with the teams as is.

I'm actually surprised on how many people have said they're picking up a ps3 for MLB08 .. I was content with MLB07 on ps2 last year since it wasn't that "huge" of a difference (and I had no HDTV) but this year its almost a must for me .. sadly Amazon delayed the shipment since they're either low on stock, or out of stock still. Once the first league fills, would there be a second league at all?

PS: G4's review looks so out of place next to the other reviews for MLB08, and I can't believe Gamespot's 50 for MLB2K8 but if its anything like the PS2 version, I can understand it. I can't believe I got so impatient I rented MLB2K8 for ps2, I'm ready to return it already.

Well the PS3 is all set up & the game is in. Wowwwwwww! I'm not use to the "next-gen" graphics but the game looks amazing. Plays really smooth too, which is great.

Have you played the demo for NBA 08 and did you like it?

Small grip here concerning the RttS player progression: I hope next year has a more free-flowing model. It seems like you're only rewarded in certain situations that are pre-determined. Sometimes, I make plays on base that isn't required (steal 2nd or 3rd which leads to the go-ahead/tying run) and that should factor into my player's progression. They need to look into what happens from a player's actions two to three plays down the line since it can dictate how good or bad a decision is.

BTW, what's everyone's postions in RttS mode? I picked CF/SS and I mostly get stuck in the outfield. It's getting a bit dull especially since my arm strength isn't developed? Are most of you guys focusing on skills at the plate, out in the field, on the base paths, or trying to build them up evenly?
Have you played the demo for NBA 08 and did you like it?
I forgot they have demos on the PSN...downloading now. I'm sinking tons of time into MLB 08 though. Far more than I ever expected.

The outfield postitions are definitely the hardest postitions to suceed with in the RttS mode. You should get credit for all the extraneous stuff you do at the end of each game or do you mean stuff that affects momentum? If the latter, that would be more subjective, which would probably be a harder thing to reward.

I have a 1B and SP in the Indians and Angels organizations, respectively. My 1B does just fine on defense, so I focus on offense besides the attributes that I'm told to build up. I'll build up his speed once my offense is great so I can steal bases much more easily. My SP is doing well, so I'm just building up the required attributes and building up my other attributes evenly. They're both getting blue balls in AA with the management saying their good enough to move up to AAA, but that's as far as that discussion goes.

Have you guys seen the idle animations if you leave your pitcher to just stand there? There's some really good ones in there.

One has the batter playing air guitar as the catcher looks on and the other has the catcher and umpire showing hitting tips to the batter ending in the umpire finally taking a few swings himself. Outstanding details in this game.

Nice to hear about your RttS guys Frisky. I'm debating whether to start another one as an infielder. I like my guy though despite the slow progression. I'm a base stealing machine. Already have 25 stolen bases in my very short stint in AA and up to 21 in AAA through a month of play.

Yeah that is really cool when they do that. One time the umpire took the bat from the batter and was acting like he was fishing with it. Very cool stuff. I'm really surprised they are doing weekly updates for the roster. I guess I'm still used to EA's every once in a while roster updates.

richierich, this game is well worth $60!

man now that's support...well I just signed up for a gamefly trial. I know I won't have much time to play now due to my son just being born. This will help with my decision.

Anyone have lag issues online? I just played my first online game and it was horrible. The guy I played used Wakefield and with the lag I couldn't hit his knuckleball at all. Right now I'm using the PS3's wifi, would I get a better connection with an ethernet cable?

richierich, this first update that came out at the end of Feburary had 109 total changes to the roster.
i love the demo and the way you guys keep praising this game makes me want to get it...damn!
Great game way better than crappy MLB 2Kx that i've been stuck with on the 360 the last few years!

Oh and speachless regarding the AA/AAA rosters! I love this as my Reds have several prospects who SHOULD hit the bigs sometime this year. I already named a few of them but full rosters would be nice!

I played a few games last week with no lag but haven't tried any online since Smash Bros Brawl came out. :D

Will it be new rosters every Monday only during the regular season or is it supposed to be every Monday? There weren't new rosters on 3-10 ...
Will it be new rosters every Monday only during the regular season or is it supposed to be every Monday? There weren't new rosters on 3-10 ...
I doubt they will do another update anytime soon. The next update will probably be during the first or second week of the season.

The game is great, a real runner up since MVP.

That aside and other flaws, in beta testing how does a tester not realize that when its strike 3 the umpire should say "strike 3 your out." Instead he says "strike two." While this is not major at all it is just beyond me that one could not differentiate between a two and a three.
