Official MLB 08: The Show Thread - IGN: 8.7, GS: 8.5, 1up: B- - Out Now!

I've noticed the annoucers called the wrong inning on me....they said it was the 8th and it was the 7th. Oh well....not a big issue, those are ok. I read something about a fatigue glitch also...not sure what it is though.
I just got around to checking out what G4 said about the game and it had to be one of the lamest reviews I've ever seen.
Yeah, they basically put the game down for not being that different from last year's.. which is A) not true and B) Lame...

The game should be judged on the game, not how different it was from last years... how different is Madden now from 2005? They don't give that a 2/5.
Will it be new rosters every Monday only during the regular season or is it supposed to be every Monday? There weren't new rosters on 3-10 ...
Once the season starts, they start releasing roster updates every Monday. It will be interesting to see if they add full player stuff (like the announcers pronouncing names, having a real pic, etc) for the first update. I remember seeing that they had Fukudome in an IGN video.

I just had a really good online Cards/Cubs game. The score was 0-0 and I hit a solo home run with Soriano in the bottom of the 6th inning. Then the next inning, I had two outs and struck out Pujols. The ball went in the dirt and Pujols was able to get to first base. Then on my first pitch to Glaus, I went to throw a pitch out and I either screwed it up or you can guess pitch out cause Glaus hit a 2 run homer. Score was 2-1.

I was thinking the game was over after that, and in the bottom of the 8th I was able to get two guys on base when Lee came up. I ended up hitting the ball right down the left field line and the ball rolled to the corner of the field. Both guys on base scored, and I tried to stretch it to a triple but got thrown out. 4-2.

Then in the top of the 9th, I brought Wood in and was able to get the first out. The next batter bunted towards first base and was able to get on and eventually got to third base. I traded a force out for a run and the score was 4-3. Then Pujols was up to bat. I was able to strike him out after a 5 or 6 pitches.

Rich Hill got MVP of the game with 9k's. I reconfigured my router and allowed DMZ and I believe this may have fixed some of the lag issues I had online. I noticed a few hiccups here and there, but overall this last game I played was way better than the laggy Wakefield knuckleball fest.

I can't wait for the first roster updates. I really want Fukudome and maybe Brian Roberts ;)

I've been playing RTTS since I got the game. I'm a starting pitcher that's been promoted to AAA in the Cubs organization. One thing that drives me nuts is it seems like I get screwed by my defense on a lot of routine plays. They either take bad routes to grounders or they take WAY too long to throw to first which extends innings.
They still don't have Roberts yet? what is holding that debacle up?
The Orioles are a horrible team to trade with.

Hmmm, found another glitch in the game. Apparently it was not programmed with some of the basic rules of baseball. I finally got called up to the Cubs. In my second game the starting pitcher got injured with one out in the 2nd inning. The Cubs were leading the Reds 1-0 at the time. I came in, pitched slightly over 4 innings, and left with a 2-1 lead (gave up a run because once again the fielding animations were too slow for the computer to turn a double play on a routine ground ball:bomb:). The Cubs won by that score and somehow the win was credited to the starter who pitched 1.1 innings.

Umm hello, you have to pitch into the 5th as a starter to qualify for the win...

I should be getting this today via Gamefly - can't wait to play it. I haven't played a baseball game on the current generation of consoles yet because I didn't want to be disappointed. This game looks to do a lot of things right.

Hopefully it can fill the void left by MVP the past few years.
Man I am sick of all the cheap baserunners my opponents get because the frickin' outfielders misplay ground balls.
The opposing outfielders for me in RttS are fuckin' amazing. They get to every fucking ball you hit in the alley. I rarely get any extra bases with the way they play. This is at the AA and AAA levels.

I've noticed that too. I'm a pitcher so I don't get many chances to bat. When I do make good contact and hit sharp grounders I always get robbed by the opposing team making a spectacular dive then throw. I'm playing RTTS as a pitcher. Whenever I am on the mound I'll induce an easy double play ball. My infielders will either take forever to throw to second allowing the runner to reach first and kill the double play, misjudge the ball they could've easily gotten to allowing it to roll into the outfield, or the second baseman will take forever or throw a weak "lollypop" toss to first the runner to be safe and sometimes errors.

This is at the MAJOR LEAGUE LEVEL!

The inconsistency of the strike zone pisses me off as well. I know it's supposed to be that way just like in real life and it works both ways (sometimes you get called strikes that should've been balls and vise versa) but for me the ratio is way off. It's about a 6:1 ratio of "bad calls" to "gift calls"

I'm loving the game, but yes there are a few glitches. The "lollypop" soft toss happens too often. On double plays they will underhand a toss that should be thrown overhand. The collision detection is horrible also. I cannot break up double plays....I want to slide into someone. Also, tagging a runner is horrible. They use the "neighborhood" play. I had a ball thrown to the left of the base and I was clearly never tagged....OUT.

Well, I finally was promoted to AAA in RTTS....although, I'll admit I started simming some games and not playing them all. I did make the AA All-Star game though.

I will start my NORMAL franchise as soon as OS has their rosters complete

It took me quite awhile to get to AAA. I got promoted to the majors for a couple weeks when Daryl Ward went on the DL for the Cubs. I made a couple relief appearances, one start, then was sent back down to clear room for Ward's return.
I'm in my third year and I've been bouncing back and forth between the bigs and AAA.

They need to alter the runner animation set (truncate it) or the pitcher set (extend it) when you turn on quick play in RttS. As it is, it's near impossible to take an extra lead step on second regardless of how long the pitcher's wind up is. On first, you can't get out quite as far since the runner does the same length animation in quick play, but the pitcher's routine is cut short.

lol no wonder I've been getting thrown out so much
1up put up a review and gave it a B- with Garnett Lee mostly bitching about the game.

http://www.1up.com/do/reviewPage?cId=3167000&p=37
The game has flaws that's for sure but overall it's a great game. For him to bitch about the color of the dirt and the ivy at Wrigley Field is a bit over the top.

I can see where he's coming from about the pitching meters though. I've had a few games where I've cruised through 5 innings of no hit or one hit baseball. All of the sudden in the 6th I'll miss badly with the first pitch to the leadoff man and BAM my pitches drop 80%. After that I have no control and I ether get lucky and the batter pops the ball up or grounds out or I get completely fucked because I try to hit the outside corner and my pitch hangs over the middle of the plate so the batter drills it. If the batter hits it hard that compounds the problem and next thing I know I've given up 5 runs.

Even with the glitches I've found I would still give the game either an A- or a B+.
lol no wonder I've been getting thrown out so much
It's still possible to get a good steal rate from first assuming the pitcher has a long wind-up. What I meant by pitcher routine being cut short is that you no longer see the pitcher getting the ball back from the catcher and him looking at the sign with quick play. It cuts immediately to him setting up for the pitch and going into the wind-up. Unfortunately, your runner doesn't immediately take his normal lead on the bases.

With quick play on, it's pretty much pointless to try and steal third. You can't get a big enough lead. I can get it fairly consistently, but my guy has about 3/4 of his speed bar filled.

Also, I think the steal button is pressure sensitive. The guy's first steps to steal seem to be much more aggressive if you jam down on the R2 instead of just tapping it so that might help.

I always get a good lead in RTTS. I find it WAY too easy to steal a base in RTTS. I believe I have 35+ SB's through half the season (and my runner has a rating of D for Speed I think)
Does this game support on-line voicechat? That is somewhat of a deal breaker for me...
Yes. If you hit L3 with a mic on, that turns on open mike and L3 again turns it off. Not too many random people have mics though (of course an issue with all PS3 games online.)

why do so few people on PS3 have mics?... you can use a bluetooth for christ sakes.. who doesn't have those in 2008 with most states banning cell-phones while driving?

Well most gamers are younger I assume, which means no bluetooth headsets :D. It is a totally different experience though, comparing xbox live in-game voice chat with PSN's. Constant talking vs. Mostly silence. Pick your poison.

I didn't have a Bluetooth headset until I got the Warhawk bundle (which I no longer have the game but kept the headset) and I really don't like them. I find them very uncomfortable, clumsy, and complicated to use. I don't like earbuds (like the ones that come with all MP3 players now) either and always use regular headphones.

I won't put it on unless someone asks for it in the game, but since MLB 08 is the only game I play online on the PS3, I'm sure it won't happen that often.

It depends what bluetooth set you get... I have a Jabra and it's amazing, but I used my girlfriend's once and it was awful.

I'm getting a bit irritated with the way points are distributed/stats are increased in RttS. Those damn skill meters just seem to crawl along. And the 40 point minimum to upgrade a stat just doesn't feel proportional to the amount of work it takes to receive them.
That's crap!
After doing some research, I found out that he has to play 1 game, before they'll add him to the roster for some reason. So he'll be on the update so they say

That and there are so many things you have to spend the points on. Especially as a pitcher. Also if you don't spend points on a category for awhile it starts to drop.

I was wondering if there were any codes to get some extra pts to help build your player faster.

This is correct. He has to play at least 1 game in the majors to be considered an official member of the MLBPA. He'll be on the first roster update after the start of the season (April 7 or sometime thereafter.)

They update the game every week.

Fukudome will probably be there in all his asian glory Monday night after he plays the first game, I would assume they would wait till then.

I think RttS is totally busted for relievers--I wanted to play as a closer, but I've finally given up after having played 4 complete season, all of which I finished with good numbers (era around 2.50, 30 saves or so) but only managed to get enough points to bump my important stats up like 2 points and every year was offered a new contract as a AA closer. I assume this is just because they didn't calibrate the point values for relievers correctly, and that if I'd been a starting pitcher getting 5-7 innings every 4 days or a hitter playing every day I'd have enough points. But at least for relievers, this mode kind of stinks. Looked like fun, and I like a lot about it, but if I can't get my guy to the majors after 4 seasons of work, that's a problem. For now I'll just be playing my games in the CAG league and waiting for opening day rosters so I can start my Nationals franchise.

Maybe you can start out as a starter, then later on accumulate enough points to build your pitcher, then ask manager to convert to reliever?

Not sure, I never noticed an option to ask to go from reliever to starter, but I may have missed that. In any case, after playing through four whole seasons, I'm frustrated enough with RttS that I probably will not be playing it again any time soon...maybe in a few months I'll give it another go.
There should be an option when you talk to the manager to change positions.
There is an option I believe. It's under "Interactions". I haven't tried it as a pitcher though, as I've been playing as a 3rd baseman (so I can be a power hitter!).

This is my first time ever playing The Show (never played a PS2 version) and I've never been as addicted to a baseball game as I am this one. While there are definite flaws, they're not impeding on my enjoyment of the game at all.

There are a few things I'd like to see tweaked, but I havent even bothered with any mode but RTTS since I got it two weeks ago.

I'm a 3rd baseman in the Giants organization right now. Still at AA.
