Official NHL Not 15 (14) Discussion/CAG Team Thread - Headsets On Pants Off! New Team!

LMAO...well, even I'm have trouble faulting EA for that. That's just one of those weird timing things where the game freaks out like "I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO!!!!" haha. Hilarious video though.

So I picked up NHL 11 today at gamestop and holy shit is that a good game. It's too bad that the servers are shut down. I think it's just the faster gameplay that made it so much better. After going from that to NHL 14 I felt like my players were skating thru mud. Also, I enjoyed the nostalgia of the old rosters. Brought back some good memories.

I think I'm starting to like this TWF build I've been using. Putting the skates back down to 11" helped a lot, and I even backed off speed/acceleration from the 90 max to 88 each, which gave me enough points to bump balance up from 65 to 76 and raised my overall to a 79. Now, I just have to decide if the extra balance means I get knocked down less, causing less injuries, or if I should just put those points into durability. It's ridiculous that you can get hit in the first 3 seconds of the game and lose 2 points off your overall because some douche wanted to take a run at you off the faceoff.

I played some drop ins earlier, and my team dominated every time. I don't think I've lost a game where I've been able to play center. In the last game, I won 30 out of 33 faceoffs, lol. Needless to say, the opposing center quit, haha. Hoping I'll be able to play a few more late tonight if anyone is on. I'm down to something like 37 games and 25 wins for Legend 1 now. Getting there.

Yeah, that build from that site you posted felt like it really helped. I was definitely faster and I felt like my shots and passes were a lot sharper. Granted it was just two games worth of playing but still.

Yeesh...Brandon and I took some beatings last night. Douche team after douche team. If they weren't cherry picking and stick tapping all game, they were destroying us all over the ice and injuring us with no calls. I definitely think the honeymoon period of the AI playing decent is over. It was same old, same old, out there. AI letting people behind them, backing off when they hold the puck out to the side, just free uncontested shots every time down the ice. Playing 2's is just as brutal as always.

I told Brandon about my idea to "revolutionize" EASHL/OTP...if EA would just take out calling for the puck. Sure, the AI is retarded, but if teams had to learn to play WITH them, and couldn't just heave rocket passes down the boards, it would change the game so much. I posted about it on the EA forums, and surprisingly, the response has been overwhelmingly positive. If only EA actually listened to their community as they say they do...

Just finished season mode today and I have to say I was surprised when I couldn't continue into another season.  The games seemed lopsided at times also.  I was playing on rookie and some games I would be down by 3 going into the third only to end up down by 4 halfway into the third,  Then after that last goal against I end up coming back and winning in the last 10 minutes.  Every shot makes it in the net when before I couldn't make it in net to save my life.  Also it was more of a pain to play against the teams in the first 3 rounds of the playoffs than it was to play New Jersey to win the cup.  The teams also seemed inconsistent.  In some games I was wondering if I would even win and in others I thought I was going to have a shutout.  The games that I thought I would have a shutout was ended up not being a shutout as the other team some how scored.  Even checked into the boards and poke checking didn't stop the player from scoring.  All the player I was controlling would do is bounce off or if the hit did work I went across the ice and the puck carrier bounced right back up and went to the net.

The bad thing is I would still play season mode if I could continue to another season.  I should have known something when I didn't see anything about scouting.  I guess I will be playing more of Live the Life as HUT feels like the skating is to sluggish.  Like someone else said it feels like skating through mud.

I just saw this on Facebook and threw up in my mouth a little bit.

Red Bull and Dion Phaneuf take a look at just how real NHL 14 actually is.

Absolutely. I should be on in about 1.5 - 2 hours.

And like we were talking about the other night, the more people we have, the better. I would honestly love it if we could somehow have 6 people on Friday nights. Between Alan and Brandon playing goalie, I think having 6 would be a legitimate option for the first time. Anything we can do to eliminate the AI element would make a huge difference. It's crazy how enjoyable some of the drop-in games have been with 6's when you have a team that plays right.

Anybody not currently on the CAG team want to join us tonight? Our standards are pretty low at this point. You just have to be better than the AI, lol. :)

Is this thread continuing the off topic discussions of PC related things that was going on in the NHL 12 thread? I have some questions for you guys on the CAG team.

Cool, thanks. My 9-10 year old PC finally bit the dust after all this time. I bought a new one yesterday. Nothing fancy since I am on a budget, but this is what I am working with now:

http://m.bestbuy.com/m/e/product/detail.jsp;jsessionid=723F5DCC34127DFDEAAAB5A6E46EF516.bbmdotp-app32-115?skuId=8982144&pid=1218960126937&pcatId=abcat0501000

I'm already well aware of the games available for Windows 8 since I have a Windows phone. But I'm looking to download some cheap or free unique games. I'd prefer it if the games were on Steam, but it's not necessary. Of course, multiplayer games I could play with you guys would be nice as well.

I made a list a while back for unique games on the other thread, I'll look it up when I'm not on my phone. I can hook you up with some steam and origin codes too.

Here you go, Matt. This is the bulk of what we talked about in the old thread. And this what got the ball rolling, haha. Two freebies.

Cry of Fear - http://store.steampowered.com/app/223710/?snr=1_7_7_151_150_1

If you want to play, Alan and I still have a very nice apartment building we've been wanting to show. Gary and Brandon were always too afraid though, haha ;)

The Stanley Parable - http://www.moddb.com/mods/the-stanley-parable/

You shouldn't know anything about this game. The less you know, the more enjoyable it is.

Those two are mods of pretty old games (Half Life 1 and Half Life 2, respectively), so hopefully they'll run ok on your new PC. Now, here's the more expansive list of everything else we talked about (ranging from flash games to full installations...some free, some not).

I guess while this thread has turned into the PC discussion thread, heres a few personal recommendations for unique games not found on consoles, leading with free games:

-Frog Fractions (free) http://twinbeard.com/frog-fractions

This is actually a browser game, so all of you can run it. Yes, even you Matt. Not going to give much context, just going to say to at least play it until you can move the frog, then thats where something magical might happen). If still stuck:
Go underwater

-Gravity Bone (Free) and most games by this dev (other's arent free, but definitely look up let's play vids of Thirty Flights of Loving, good storytelling) http://blendogames.com/

-I'mscared (free) http://gamejolt.com/games/other/imscared-a-pixelated-nightmare/10058/

Again, not going to give much context with this one, does something interesting with how it interacts with you.

-Cart Life (free) http://www.richardhofmeier.com/cartlife/

-Papers, Please (free) http://www.dukope.com/#ppl

-Antichamber http://store.steampowered.com/app/219890/?snr=1_7_15__13

(watch the solution to the puzzle, rest of the game is a mind- fuck like this)
http://youtu.be/fXty2JYIjPo?t=1m46s[

-Defcon http://store.steampowered.com/app/1520/
Skip anywhere into the first quarter of the video

-Frozen Synapse http://store.steampowered.com/app/98200/
Buying this game is kinda weird as you get two copies, I dont think you can buy one. I think Brandon has my other copy lol

This game is actually getting ported over to PS3 and Vita, but started on PC

Went through Megazell's free game list last night and found a few more interesting experiences. I mostly stuck to the 3D adventure games, since a lot of that seemed to give a more unique perspective. But some of these were pretty decent.

Forget Me Not Annie

Forget Me Not Annie is a first person horror puzzle game. Developed in the unreal engine. Take on the role of Annie as she traverses her mind solving puzzles with here friend and ally, Howard the Bear. Use telekinesis and the ability to swap locations with Howard to solve the portal style puzzles.

Judith

Judith is a game you play the game from the first person perspective and it's about control.

Megazell's Comment - While trying to summarize this game to a friend I found this review that took the words right out my mind - "Judith is an interactive story in which you literally cannot help but press on even as you unravel the suspenseful plot bit by bit. I found the experience to be surprisingly deep and haunting. The plot ultimately hints at a back story that you are left to interpret for yourself. I was amazed. I want more games like this."

A Mother's Inferno

It is called ‘A Mother’s Inferno’. Presumably a reference to Dante’s Inferno, it is a first-person perspective passage through a personal hell by a mother who has lost her boy. It is visually and audibly painful, highly shocking and disturbing and packed with symbology it doesn’t waste time explaining. At all of 15 minutes long, it is terror and loss condensed. - Polygon.com

Process

Process - is a game project in the adventure genre; its story takes place in several subway train cars. In 20 minutes a disaster will happen - the train will jump the tracks at full speed. The gameplay takes exactly the time designated before the crash. During this period in grim dimly lit interiors, combining cyberpunk and industrial aesthetics, the player is to figure out the situation, try all possible means of rescue and in the end take a brand new look at the portrayed events. It's a game about predetermination of events and the subjectiveness of perception of the surrounding world.

Truth is, it's hard to position the project as a full-fledged game. "Process" is more of an interactive installation or a small graphic novel. But technologically it's a classic first person adventure, panoramic locations with the capability of free 360 view and discreet movement between the panoramas through a point-and-click interface.

The "Process" project is developed by TrainYard - a small team of independent game developers. Development is done remotely, in free time from main work.

SCP-087 aka The Stairwell

Excuse me while I go jump out of my skin. Like Haversine's SCP-087, EZeddy's experimental horror game is based on that well-loved piece of creepy pasta. Unlike the former, The Stairwell is a little more fleshed out. It features an actual prologue, some additional content and the ability to jump, crouch and flip switches. Much like before, I'm not really willing to spoil this for folks so if you're feeling particularly brave today, why not download the game and give it a shot? Just remember the keep the lights on. - Indiegames.com

A short game where you look for a way to open the door out of the small house.

Please be aware that the game contains violence, blood, and slight gore.

Some other games to check out that I've since added to my Steam library:

Q.U.B.E. (kinda like Antichamber, but very odd and trippy in its own way)

Amnesia: The Dark Descent (Really freaking scary)

Anna: The Extended Edition (Another first person adventure/puzzle/horror game. Pretty creepy)

Dear Esther (Not really a game..more like an interactive story. Some people will say "just watch a video of it on Youtube and it's the same thing." But I really enjoyed it)

Euro Truck Simulator 2 (Single player only...unless they ever finish the MP mod. But most of us have had good times with this one...and I'm pretty sure it has a demo so you can see if you can run it).

Farming Simulator 2013 (Alan, Brandon, and I bought this during the summer sale, played it one time for like 4-5 hours and haven't gone back, lol. It's a fun game though. Not sure what happened on the farm that night)

Home (Alan recommended this one. It's very weird, but is definitely a unique experience)

Infestation: Survivor Stories (Yeah...we've all had some moments with this one, lol. Not a good game, per se...but can be fun...sometimes)

McPixel (Gary loves this one, but it annoys the shit out of me, lol)

Slender (First game is free...and it's scary as shit http://www.parsecproductions.net/slender/)

Surgeon Simulator 2013 (This game is just nuts...and keeps getting nuttier. You can now do surgery on aliens)

Thomas Was Alone (So simple, and so good. I really enjoyed this one)

One last thing I'll say, check out the OP of the Steam thread in the deals forum. Not only does Steam do sales itself, but there are links in the thread to the many different bundle websites that will sell you like 6-7 games for $1. That's how I built my library up ridiculously fast.

Another great resource to use is www.isthereanydeal.com. You can import your Steam wishlist, and have it send you an email when a game is bundled and/or reaches a price you're willing to pay. It's pretty awesome.

Hope that helps. Glad you have a real computer again. There are definitely some things mobile devices just can't do.

Thanks, guys. I remember reading about those games in the old thread. But right now, like Alan, I'm unable to do a proper search since I'm on my phone. The last thing I remember reading in the old thread was Nate getting a shipping notification for the Oculus Rift.

Woohoo! My delivery estimate has now moved up to tomorrow for my Rift! Can't believe in less than 24 hours I'll finally get to experience it for myself.

Wow...this is surprising, but after trading barbs with one of the guys on that last douche team we played last night (the one that had like 4 goals on 7 shots because they kept drag wristing the short side) I almost had a reasonable conversation. Right away, he thought I was going to blame the goalie, and started telling me that the goalies react so quickly to almost everything else, they "have to do something to score". I'm like "Yeah...I agree. The goalies were never the problem."

Then, we pretty much simultaneously send messages about the AI d-men not contesting shots. I tell him that it's stupid when he comes in on a 1 on 2 "scoring chance" and neither defenseman challenges the shot...and unless he knows of a setting that will make them play right, it just feels like an exploit. And this is what he said:

Set Ur def to puck side att 122 red aggr off wen playin with comp def they will attack high in slot sometime miss hits but that's where u come in with good back check
So, yeah...not saying we'll get results. But it's always good to know what the dbag teams are using. I feel like we've tried every setting possible. But it's worth a shot.

Damn, this thing is crazy. I think I was exposed to it more than anyone could be, watching countless Youtube videos and whatnot. So, for a majority of the current demos/games, I knew exactly what was coming. And while it's different when you're experiencing it firsthand, I still knew exactly where everything was supposed to be. This almost made me not quite as wowed as I felt I should have been...and I didn't really have that sense of being immersed because I was still aware "I'm sitting in a chair, I can hear my wife playing with my daughter, etc." (though I was using shitty headphones. I just ordered a pair of Turtle Beach X42's last night...to hopefully solve both my Xbox and PC headset troubles)

But then I started playing the helicopter demo, and spent like 10-15 minutes screwing around...and holy crap, it just clicked. I think the longer you're in it, the more you adjust and your brain just forgets that real life exists. Your brain starts thinking it's actually looking at the sky, actually looking at an ocean, etc. So, then I tried the Cobra rollercoaster...which is one of the suspended hanging coasters, and in the demo, your character has his arms extended out to the sides. It was kind of weird at first, but once I put my arms out into the same position, my mind started going crazy.

When you can feel the weight of your arm extended, and you see an arm, your brain is like "yup...that's my arm." But then you move your fingers...and the fingers you're looking at don't move, and your brain is like "Ahhhh....WHAT IN THE fuck?!?!" lol. I just started staring at my left arm tripping myself out. I'd just sit perfectly still and everything would feel normal. Then, I'd move my right hand across to hit my left bicep, and nothing happened and my mind was blown, haha. It's such a weird feeling.

There's one demo where you can look in a mirror and actually see "yourself" moving your head up/down and side to side. And there's no lag, so it actually does feel like it's you. If they can ever do something with full body tracking (ie. a legitimate use for something like Kinect), and your limb movements follow too, I have no doubts it could easily trick your brain into thinking that it's really you. Then, of course, once full 1080p gets thrown into this, it's going to be ridiculous. I just can't even imagine how Sony/Microsoft could possibly compete with the ability to be IN the game. It changes everything.

EDIT:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qktvBFPz7oY

I think I need to change my pants
Haha, glad my used car salesman skills are still up to snuff. Unless you become obsessed with the Rift (as I quickly did...ask my wife, lol), you might want to hold off until they release the consumer version. This was basically a prototype for developers and enthusiasts who just had to try it out. As such, they used a cheaper LED panel, which has a resolution of 1280 x 800...which is then split across 2 lenses (like you're looking through binoculars), so you get 640 x 800 per eye. The consumer version will be full 1080p (they've already been showing off that version at various gaming events).

Not to mention, they want to include some form of positional tracking in the consumer model, so it can detect your body leaning up/down, left/right, etc. Right now, it just detects head turning/tilting (though the modding community has been able to add motion tracking many different ways...from Razer Hydra controllers, to PS Eye, to Kinect, and more).

Having said all this to downplay how "poor" the developer version actually is, it's still incredibly more badass than anything else that is out there right now, haha. But in a year (consumer version is rumored for end of 2014), that won't be the case. If you can't wait a year (or you want to try it out for a few months and then sell it on eBay for more than you paid...last we saw, they were still going for close to $500), you can head on over to oculusvr.com and "get in line" as I put it.

Surprisingly, they're actually almost caught up with orders. There were some people who ordered on like 9/24 who had theirs shipped in the same batch as mine (I ordered 8/16). I read a comment of "Yeah, I ordered on 9/24 and got my 'shipping soon' email on 9/26". And I was all like "Motherf...." lol. There's was also news about them almost being out of product and having to have more made, so it's still a roll of the dice when ordering. Once you start seeking out the different Youtube videos, there's no turning back though, haha.

Haha, great to hear you like it. Cant wait for the "consumer" version
Indeed. In all likelihood. I'll keep my ear as close to the ground as I can, and when I get wind that the consumer version is coming down the pipe relatively soon, I'll probably unload this on eBay. It's definitely great at what it does, but when you use it, you can definitely see those areas where it can improve.

On a funny note, I've been working my way up to trying some of the scary games (Dreadhalls, Ocean Rift, etc.) and I started a few of them...and felt the building sensation of "this is getting too real". I even got to where I could see the gargoyle statue in Dreadhalls and said "Nope. I think I'm good." and exited out, lol. Maybe tomorrow.

Also, I just wanted to add, as some of us were talking about this past week, we could probably stand to regain our focus a bit as a team. Yes, there are numerous things about this game that suck and are stupid. But we're still capable of winning. And the key to winning will always begin and end with solid defensive play from every person on the ice.

We've gotta watch ourselves with puck chasing. Wingers dropping down too low and leaving the point wide open. If both d are back, and I'm there for support, trust that we've got it. We've had some moments where teams get it back to the point, and it's an uncontested shot for a goal.

The same is true for d-men breaking out early. If the opposing team is applying pressure, the puck carrier shouldn't be the last person in the zone. I'm guilty of this sometimes, even at center, as depending on how aggressive our opponent's forecheck is, I need to stay back as a close passing option too. It's easy to forget. But it's something we should be able to recognize and adjust.

I think we also have to throw out some of our old expectations from NHL 12 and earlier. The timing on passing is different, the skating is different, the hitting is different, the shooting is different (though, thankfully not as bad as last year). Obviously, there's an adjustment period for these things, but several of us are approaching our legend cards, so while some of the issues were player based, some of them are mental too.

The biggest thing we can change here is just seeing what's in front of us. There are times when we hold the puck too long, and wind up turning it over (either by getting hit, or passing it after the window has closed). We've gotta be quick with our decisions and take what's there. If a guy is open, get the puck to him. If nobody is open, it might be a good idea to just take a shot. There's a difference between shooting the puck the second you cross the blue line and looking for that 4th or 5th pass in the offensive zone. Sometimes, it seems like we're just trying to do too much with it and force things that aren't there.

And related to that, if we give up a goal in the 1st (or even 2nd) period, we can't start talking like the sky is falling. I know several of us have had games where we trailed 2-0 heading into the 3rd period and we've come back, forced overtime, and then won the game. Honestly, I think that's one of our biggest deficiencies right now. We get down, start playing overly aggressive (see also: foolish), and make a bad situation worse.

Penalties are penalties...and yeah, some are unavoidable. But we shouldn't really be playing any more aggressive than we were before (if anything, we should probably be playing smarter). Even if teams start screwing with us, if we act dumb and make mistakes, we're just giving them exactly what they want. But if we keep our focus, and keep coming at them with solid pressure, there's a good chance they'll crack. We've seen it many times.

Anyway, that's my little "pep talk". We've kind of had an up and down run with this game so far. I think we had a stretch where we were like 11-1...but then this past weekend, yeah, it got pretty ugly with a 1-9 stretch. Obviously we're going to lose games and have some bad luck here and there. But when we start seeing scores of 5-1, 7-2, etc. you have to look at what we're doing wrong.

Sometimes Alan or my self will jump into a play and nobody really falls back. As I Always tell my wingers, point point point. Don't get sucked down low. Also, a fight will sometimes energize the team. I'm to blame for tightening a lot, but I hate cheap shots and injuries to my team mates. It's hard to really pick a good time to fight so it is what it is with fighting .

I agree. I think that's just where awareness comes in. It's not just a "the center should always cover" thing. I know we've had several plays where the puck bounces around the corner, and I'm coming at it from up top and Gary will pinch in the bottom. Whoever the backside forward is needs to drop back. We just have to be more realistic about pucks that we can actually get to. If you're not one of the closest two people to the puck, back off.

But I also think a distinction should be made between trying to hold the puck in the zone, or move into the offensive flow, as opposed to leading the charge. Sometimes having a d-man carry the puck into the zone puts the forwards in a tough spot because we're kind of straddling the line from a standstill. So, if there's a sudden turnover, we have no chance to get back on the play. If none of us are open, that's one thing. But if it's just a "for the hell of it" thing, it kinda just throws us off.

It's little stuff. We all know how to play this game...and that's why we're able to have the success we've had. But in terms of staying consistent and beating those tough teams, I think these are things we just always have to stay sharp on.

I'll also say, games where I'm getting dominated in the faceoff circle (for whatever reason), I hate. I try to do everything I can to dictate the pace of the game, and when we're winning faceoffs, it feels a lot easier. I essentially single-handedly controlled a drop-in game I just played. We went down 2-0 in the 1st because nobody played as a team and our goalie had no help. The goalie quit after the first period. I won 19 of the next 22 faceoffs and we outshot them 18-4 the rest of the game. Annnd I scored a hat trick and we won 6-3, lol. To be fair, their goalie stayed the entire time...but we scored more goals than they had shots in the 2nd and 3rd period (they had 5 shots in the 1st...we had 0 shots). 5 more wins for Legend 1 :)

Something that I would want to iterate on is skating the puck back at us on D when we already have the zone. If the lane is open enough where you can skate at us, just pass the puck instead, as it will give us 4 players to pass the puck to. If you skate it at us, you're taking us out of the play completely for those few seconds.

A similar situation is when the puck carrier gains the zone with a teammate right behind. El as the puck carrier, don't put on the brakes in the high slot. Passes it back to the trailing forward and drive the next. The guy who is covering you will likely follow you and leave the guy you passed it to open.

Yeah, I definitely think that's an instance where drop passes can be useful (especially if it's the 3 forwards coming down the ice...doing a drop pass to a d-man would be a bit more risky). But that's something we need to be thinking about as the trailing guy. If nobody is skating directly behind the puck carrier, a drop pass isn't really going to be valid. These are definitely areas where we can improve and expand our game. But we have to recognize those opportunities and adjust our play accordingly.
